This is – hands down – one of my absolute favorite series EVER!! Addictive from the start, and I’m still obsessing over the “Brothers”.
In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race.
Nancy: I love this series so much! I’m actually re-reading the series… I have so many favorite Brothers, Rhage, Z, Vishous, John, Qhuinn! I love them all, but these guys are my fave.

"...Racked by a restlessness in her body that wasn’t there before, Beth Randall is helpless against the dangerously sexy man who comes to her at night with shadows in his eyes. His tales of the Brotherhood and blood frighten her. Yet his touch ignites a dawning new hunger—one that threatens to consume them both..."

Maryse's Book Review of “Dark Lover”
A warrior with inner demons falls for a woman who could save his soul in this seductive novel from the #1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
"...Mary Luce has unwittingly found herself in the vampire world, and under Rhage’s protection. With her own life-threatening curse to bear, she’s not looking for love. ...when Rhage’s intense sexual attraction turns into emotional bonding, he knows he must have her for his mate..."
MichelleS: ...Rhage’s story – Lover Eternal – the most swoony PNR ever! God, I love that big jerk...
Noelle: My favorite book is Lover Eternal. I LOVED Rhage! I remember in one scene, his dragon comes out and the heroine isn’t afraid at all and goes to him. The other were afraid that he would hurt her but he didn’t. I think he curls up to her and basically acts smitten. It was so sweet.
Maryse's Book Review – “Lover Eternal”
MY FAVORITE OF THE ENTIRE SERIES (even though I loved them all!!) THIS IS MY HERO!!! ---> Maryse's Book Review of “Lover Awakened”
"...the most fearsome member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood discovers just how tempting the night can be…"
Julia: I would recommend “Lover Awakened” by J.R. Ward. I’ve reread it many, many times. You don’t even have to like vampire books to appreciate this story. LOVE IT!!!!
Lola: Nothing like some good ol’ ass kicking, leather-clad, vampires! Hands down favorite has to be Lover Awakened!
#1 New York Times bestselling author J. R. Ward’s “instantly addictive”* novels of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continue as an ally of the Brotherhood must face his own dark desires....
Hannah: I actually have two favorite brothers. First is Z, because it’s impossible not to love him! Second is Butch, because it was awesome to see how he adjusts to life with the Brothers and becomes a part of the family!
Scamp: Butch has that sarcastic sense of humor that I love.
Maryse's Book Review of “Lover Revealed”
"...As a member of the Black Dagger Brotherhood, he has no interest in love or emotion, only the battle with the Lessening Society. But when a mortal injury puts him in the care of a human surgeon, Dr. Jane Whitcomb compels him to reveal his inner pain..."
MaryLynn: JR Ward’s Lover Unbound – V is the epitomy of the tortured hero !!!
Lisa: ...my forever fav will always, always be Vishous.
Maryse's Book Review – “Lover Unbound”
"...As his first mate, the Chosen Cormia wants to win not only his body but his heart for herself- she sees the emotionally scarred male behind all his noble responsibility..."<--- except he's in love with his twin's wife!! Eeeeeep!
Hikmah: ohhh gosh!! phury is my fav 😘
Jean: ...I also loved Lover Enshrined with Phury which surprised me!
Maryse's Book Review of “Lover Enshrined”
NOTE: While this story takes place in BDB's town of Caldwell, this book (and characters) are not officially considered a part of the Black Dagger Brotherhood - and the vampire characteristics and rules are slightly different in this one. I've included it here anyway since I have found some evidence of a potential future connection. P.S. Check out my "connection" research here: Where does “The Story of Son” fit into The Black Dagger Brotherhood series?
This is a book no Black Dagger Brotherhood fan should miss—an insider’s guide that will seduce readers as powerfully as the sexy band of Brothers and the world they live in. And also included is an original short story about stars Zsadist and Bella!
Heidi: I was not a book reader until two of my good friends recommended this series. WOW, is all I can say! I am officially a book reader, as I have read this series twice so far…I’m a bit obsessed. I wish the message boards would start again. I really enjoyed reading some of the brothers board posts from the Insiders Guide.
AFTER THE BIRTH OF HIS CHILD...
"...He has been waking up in cold sweats due to nightmares from his past, hasn't made love to his wife, and won't hold his baby girl, for fear that he might hurt her. While Nalla's presence had consisted of only joy and excitement in first couple months of her life, now it seems to be driving the couple apart. Bella is afraid that she and Nalla just may need to leave her hellren..."
Lesley: Z is up there are one of my all time fav book boyfriends, I love his tortured soul to bits and I’m happy to admit his little bonus story Father Mine made me cry like a baby. I love the BDB series but Z will always be my favourite 🙂
Vishara: I love love love Zsadist!! He is my number one out of all the brothers. Z’s and Bella’s story is my most absolute favorite in the BDB series!! “Father Mine” was the best novella I had ever read!! I can’t get enough of Z!!
"Rehvenge is used to living in the shadows and keeping his distance from the Brotherhood. As a symphath, his identity is a deadly secret—the revelation of which will result in his banishment. But as Rehvenge is pulled into plots both within and outside of the Brotherhood, he turns to the only source of light in his darkening world. Ehlena is a vampire untouched by the corruption that has its hold on him..."
JenM: I just finished Lover Avenged and totally fell in love with Rev. Plus Wrath and Beth were so much in that book that it was a total bonus.
Fabi: I’ve been rereading (actually listening to) the entire BDB. Lover Avenged is next for me too. I love the complex characters JR Ward created. The strange world and unique dialogue are such a trip.
Jackie: Just finished. Probably my abssolute favourite.
Maryse's 5 STAR Book Review of Lover Avenged
"...John Matthew has come a long way since he was found living among humans, his vampire nature unknown to himself and to those around him. After he was taken in by the Brotherhood, no one could guess what his true history was—or his true identity..."
Jennifer: I found Lover Mine at a used bookstore and am almost done with it. I know it’s not the first book in the series but I really wanted to start reading the book. Great story and make believe world.
Tori: Lover Mine is one of my favorites of the series!
Trish: What a ride this book took us on and it was fantastic!!!!! how is all ties in, in the end was pure writing perfection…ahhhhh I can’t wait to read it again! Great review!!!
Maryse's Book Review of Lover Mine
"Payne, twin sister of Vishous, is cut from the same dark, seductive cloth as her brother. Imprisoned for eons by their mother, the Scribe Virgin, she finally frees herself-only to face a devastating injury. Manuel Manello, M.D., is drafted by the Brotherhood to save her as only he can-but when the human surgeon and the vampire warrior meet, their two worlds collide..."
Kathryn: I devoured the book cover to cover this past weekend.
Sara: I loved this book. Great review. Agree with a lot of it. Loved Butch in this one.
Maryse's Book Review – Lover Unleashed
...Seeing his beloved in dreams—trapped in a cold, isolated netherworld—Tohr turns to the angel Lassiter to save his former mate. The only way to rescue her is for Tohr to love another...
Louise: It was by luck that I stumbled upon Maryse’s blog, and thank the scribe virgin that I did. I have burnt through the pages of the whole series and WOW!!!!! Laughed cried and totally enjoyed. Lover Reborn amazing even to the end had me almost wetting my pants...
Maryse's Book Review of Lover Reborn
"...Blay, after years of unrequited love, has moved on from his feelings for Qhuinn. And it’s about time: it seems Qhuinn has found his perfect match in a Chosen female, and they are going to have a young. It’s hard for Blay to see the new couple together, but building your life around a pipe dream is just a heartbreak waiting to happen. And Qhuinn needs to come to terms with some dark things before he can move forward…"
Jasmine: My most favorite book ever (for now) is LOVER AT LAST. I read your blog every day! Thank you for of your reviews!
Cheryl: Just finished reading Lover at Last…loved it! So glad Qhuinn & Blay got their own story…at last, I waited forever for that one, and I love the fact that there are new characters introduced, it makes me look forward to the next one in the series. Can’t wait!!!
Black Dagger Brotherhood continues as a royal bloodline is compromised by a grave threat to the throne...
Kathy: Just finished the King, and definitely one of the best in the series in my opinion. I reread Dark Lover before starting the King, though, and I was glad I did. Brought back the meeting and start of the relationship of Wrath and Beth.
Sharon: I just finished The King and I am just overwhelmed. This one made me cry, but for good reasons. This series and this author never disappoints me. Ever. I will start a reread soon . . . Now than I know the ending, I can take my time and catch all of those thing I missed. Problem is, no book can hold my attention now.
Jackie: ...read all night…all day…2 hours of sleep before work..went to work half dead ( i will take the pain!!) came home and finished the book 5 minutes ago…and OMG….wooo, what a ride! The ending was perfect, it just clicked.
Two brothers bound by more than blood fight to change a brutal destiny in this novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
Laura: I am an actual blubbering mess after finishing the shadows snot and everything
bev: Just read a spoilers thread on The Shadows…..and whoa! 😳
MichelleS: I am reading The Shadows and already enjoying it way more than The King, for all the BDB fans out there. And I am so giddy to be in that world with Rhage and V and Tohr and the gang. Even if it’s just small parts here and there, it makes me happy.
MichelleS: I just read a scene where Rhage was so dang alpha hot, made the $12 price tag worth it for me just to get a taste of Rhage. ...this is classic BDB. YAY!
Krystal: I finished the The Shadows last night and the hangover is serious. I can’t even think what to read next!
SPINOFF OF BLACK DAGGER BROTHERHOOD BUT CAN BE READ AS #13.5
The legacy of the Black Dagger Brotherhood continues in this gripping spin-off series from #1 New York Timesbestselling author J.R. Ward.
Theresa: Just finished Blood Kiss. Good spin off. Same world, some with the brothers but a slower, more romance, less intense read. Not the tragic sad ugly cry stories of the brothers. So I recommend you give it a try.
MichelleS: Yup. I went there. Couldn’t help it. V, Butch, Rhage, Wrath, Z… Come on… You know you want to. ...for BDB fans, it’s a must read!
Fabi: I’m about 2/3 of the way and it’s pure BDB bliss for me.
Theresa: I thought Blood Kiss was really good. More a romance, with secondary story of one of the brothers. Very littke focus on the lessors. Less complicated then the Shadows.
Ela: I’m reading Blood Kiss and loving it! I must agree it doesn’t feel like a spin off at all. The King was a revisit of Wraith and soon we’re getting Rhage’s second book. Both characters already had their stories so this one doesn’t seem that much more different.
Fan favorite couple Rhage and Mary return in this gripping novel in the #1 New York Times bestselling Black Dagger Brotherhood series.
Sharon: Finished The Beast yesterday and it did not disappoint in the least. So many twists and turns and OMG moments. Each side story held my attention too.

Nay: OMG! I didn’t even realize until just now that The Savior was Murhder’s book!
MichelleS: The Savior gave me some good background on characters that explains a lot.
SHE'S ON A MISSION!

Thank you so much for recommending the BDB series aside from Lora Leigh’s Breed series this is my favorite vamp series!!!
It tops my favorites list! LOVE these guys. When I read each new installment, I strangely feel like I’m home… hehe
You have fantastic taste in books!!! I’m reading the Midnight Breed series and the Dark Hunter series as well as BDB. I’m interested in the Fever series since you’ve talked so highly about it. Keep the recommendations coming and I’ll keep my iPad stocked full of book downloads. Thanks again!
All three of those will keep you highly entertained! Promise!
If you love all those series, you should also look into the demonica series 👌🏼
I have just devoured the BDB page by page and each and everyone one of them were delicious I can`t have a favourite I love them all,2 days until Lover Unleashed, oh yes!! Your blog is amazing, I am thinking about reading The Midnight Breed books next though it kind of feels like I would be cheating on the BDB !!Thanks
Hey
1. I have to agree with your comment Maryse, that you feel at home whenever you read a book from this series. I just finished Lover Unleashed and felt like I’d come home!
2. If Quinn and Blay do not end up together I am going to be seriously pee’d off! But I guess we’ll just have to wait for that 🙁
3. When is the next book coming? I miss it already = sad times!
Hi Laycie…I get the impression that Qhuinn and Blay will be official soon enough (she mentionned in a past chat that they would have a happily ever after), and will be getting a novella… YAY!
I’m so happy that I found your website! I had no idea how many different authors and series there were or where to even begin. I have finished BDB series and fallen angels series, as well as lords of the underworld series..I try to make the books “last” but I can’t seem to help myself from finishing them in a very short time. I wait so long for a book release and then it’s over so quickly 🙁 lol. My absolute favorite book was zhadist’s book! So while I wait for ward or showalter’s next release, any recommendations?
Hi Eileen! Well, since you really loved BDB, I remember getting a bit of “that feeling” when reading Lara Adrian’s “Midnight Breed” series. Have you read it yet? It’s similar in style with the warriors in a compound type place, resistant to love, and proctecting the Elite vampires and humans etc…
I am so totally loving this series. I cannot get enough. I do not know if I have a fave brother or not. I seriously love them all! I do love Z and John, and Rehv too. hehe
Hmm I just saw a mention about the Fever series. My stepmom just told me about that one. I’ll have to look n see what you have to say before I give it a try. I’m going to start the Dark Hunter series tonight.
Angie. The Fever series is one of my favorite of them all (and the Dark-Hunters, too). My mom is just getting into the last “Fever” book, and she is addicted. Won;y even start the latest J.R. Ward BDB, until she has that one finished. That’s how good it is.
I just finished the first book. HOOKED. Bliss is starting a new. Author with a big ‘ol series! Gotta go buy another book!
I absolutely love the BDB series. I could not put the books down. I’m so excited for the next book.
i love the BDB series, i can’t wait for Blay and Qhuinn story, and also Layla
Me too!! I think they will be getting their own novella…
After being a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter for so long, I had to admit that I’m hook with the “brotherhood”, it’s like they were the hunters first cousins…luv it!
Love your site! Ive read a few series from your list, such as the hunger games, fever series (loved) and fifty shades of grey and fifty shades darker (really, really loved) and now on the bdb series. I can’t put these books down to save my life ! I’m now on book 5, and I must say I’m in love with V. Loved him from the beggining! I’m sure after I’m done with this series ill find something else from your list…any recommendations?
I think your site is quite neat. The recommendations are great. always love to hear about a good series and that others like it before i start reading. gives me incentive. Has anyone read the Night huntress series. Totally head over heals over Bones! Short novels but very good. Love the BDB, favorite brother is Rhvenge and Zadist. Dying for Quin and Blay to be official. I think Manny is EXTREMLY hot and I cant wait for his completion. (trying not to give away stuff) love sookie stackhouse although the last book kinda left me a little unhappy. (just being honest, i expected sorta more ;P) i just purchased my nook color february of this year and the only books i have are vampire affiliated one way or another. currently in school so it makes it hard to read my required reading to obtain my associates degree when all i can think of is, ‘what is that vampire gonna do now!?!” i am sure I am not the only one that suffers this way, just maybe more intense then some may admit. LOL anyhow. glad i found your site. sorry for the short novel.
LOL Angie!!! Loved the comment, and yes. I suffer from that very same affliction. My favorite Brothers would be Z, V, and *sigh* I suppose I’ll say Phury even though his book was disappointing. Oh Rehv was amazing. My mom’s favorite though, so I bowed out of claiming him. Also LOVED Wrath’s book. SO I’d almost say he’s a favorite. V and Wrath are both #2 for me. Nobody beats Z though.
I know what you mean, i have a place in my heart for Z and yeah phury’s book kinda pissed me off. Still love him. I started reading the love at stake series you recommend on your page. I love it so far. I had to laugh cuz i noticed that of course we are all human, funny how some authors think men with hairy chest are sexy and others dont . These are things that stand out to me. LOLOLOL insane in the membrane syndrome. LOLOL anyhow i am currently on book three and I am so hooked that I have to leave my NOOK at home because I dont trust myself to not read it while i am at work. I need help. do you know any good vampire theapist? LOLOL
LOL!! Vampire therapist… wait. Can he be a vampire, too? Tee hee! *blush*

im in love with blackdagger brotherhood!!!! i finished all the books so i was wondering if yours have and good books i can start reading??????
I just started reading this series before Christmas and I am in love. Already on Book #3 and I can’t put it down. I am a lover of Vampire books starting off with Twilight then the True Blood Sookie Stackhouse Series. Thanks for the reviews! Love your web site!
Anika
Oh Anika, your gonna love them all. Hurry cuz a new book will be out soon.
Thanks Angie! I saw that was coming out soon! I know I will be done with the other books by then because its just too good to put down!
speaking for myself personally but i know many here feel the same, we need help. none of us can put the books down, we are under covers with flash lights, staying up until 2 hours before having to get up to go to work, ignoring husbands, leaving homework for later, laundry pileing up to read one more chapter. just one more chapter. As myself, i am in a lot of trouble. LOLOLOL in a good way of course. LOLOL
LOL! I know how you feel. That sounds about right 😉
O my goodness! That is so me! I just finished 4 chapters while sneaking at work because I just had to know what was coming next. I can’t remember what I was doing before I discovered reading, but I am loving every minute!
I have finish all the black dagger brotherhood boOks and I’m dying without it I’m sO excited to read the latest one that coming out in march does anyone have any goOd suggestions for boOks I can read till J.R ward comes with new books? Hs anyone read fallen angels by J.R ward?
Hi Bianca!
Have you read the True Blood Books? Those are really good!
OMG!!!!! I read these books back in 2010 and have been waiting to read #9 and on are they as good as the rest
I did a search for a reading order for another series and you were the top link! Thank goodness you were because I found the Black Dagger Brotherhood here and picked up the first book based on your review. I am HOOKED! Loving this series! I know where to look for my next series when I catch up with this author.
Thanks Again
Leah
BDB is my absolute favorite series, true?! I started reading them again!
nikaila. I feel you. LOL! Best series!
I am almost done with Lover Unleashed! What am I going to do until March 27? That’s when book 10 comes out…..crying! Help!!! #BDB
Not too much longer of a wait 😉 I’ve been waiting a year!!
And…how do you change the face on here from the little cartoon to a picture of myself? I have tried and I can’t figure it out. I am a little slow, I know! LOL!
Anika. I think it’s done here: https://en.gravatar.com/ (you set up an account, upload your picture) and it’ll show up on all of the websites that use it, when you comment.
Garsh! I forgot I am the last to read these books! Thanks for the gravatar info!!!
Yayyy! It worked! Now I have a picture. That’s me and my Sister! I am on the left. Okay, back to reading. I have been reading so slow trying to make it last as long as possible. I suppose I could just start reading them all over again. **Sigh**
okay i am just wondering where the story of son fits into the BDB series.. i was thinkinb maybe it has something to do with Mhurder.. maybe it doesnt fit in at all i dont know but i just wanted to know what everyone else thinks
Hi Brandy! I’ve looked it up and it appears that “The Story of Son” isn’t really considered a part of her BDB series. But I’ve been reading that it’s an amazing story, so I’m going to see if I can get it and I’ll be able to give a better answer on that. 🙂
I have read t and it is such a sweet story and it does stand on its own…. it doesnt talk about the brothers but maybe it is just wishfull thinking.. haha but I dont know many people who have read it.. so I dont have people to talk about it with hahaha.. cant wait to hear your take on it!!! once you have the time to get around to it.. 🙂
I love you site….anytime i need help finding books and what series they belong to and the order I come straight here cuz I to have an osession with things that go bump in the night…thank you!
HOLY COW I just stumbled on your blog after googling “JR Ward reading order” and saw the news that Blay/Quinn is going to be the next book, and full length. You made my day/month/year! I am so, so excited for this. Thank you for updating your post!!!
Hi, I just wanted to say thank you so much for being good at keeping up with your site. I read.. all the time, it’s my life line as a mother of four.. You also seem to read ALOT, and I can not tell you how great it is to have your site to check before starting a new series, for the correct reading order, comments and so on, because I know that based on your comments, I can trust that you understand what makes a book a “Great Read” or.. just worth it.. Nowhere else can I go to find reviews, order lists’, and so on in reliable detail.. Please keep up the good work, and Thank You So Much!!! 🙂
I just have one question…. did anyone else yell out loud at some of the BDB i just now started reading them and am on Lover Awakened….. I love these books and glad that i still have more to read… but sometimes these books take alot out of me emotionally.. maybe i get to into the book. lol. i could actually feel the heart break in some of the scenes…. but i do love these books wish i had heard of them sooner….
Maryse keep up the good work i love your blog. Thank you for all the great suggestions….
Glad to help Candace!! The BDB books sure addicted me. I read every one that was out in a row without any other books in between. Z is my fav!!
Hi! Thanks for all the
Wow…just finished Dark Lover in three days
Couldn’t put it down! About too start the second
book….hmmm think I’ve fallen in love with Wrath!!
If he haven’t read this series I highly recommend it!!
Oh wow love them to death! on book 7 I am finishing them way to quickly 🙁
I had just finished reading 50, which I loved, I was at a 50 Shades of Gray passion party, and sad that I had finished all three books in record time! lol Thank goodness there was this lady there who told me about the BDB series because I love all four books so far. It’s weird, but I feel like they are a part of me or like I know them or something. That’s how much I’m into this series!!!! Love love love, glad to see/read that it’s not just me! 🙂 I’ve also been reading them in a row without any other books in between. I just dont want to read anything else!!! lol
Oh I totally get it. I have become one with the BDB. LOVE them!
I’m SUPER intimidated to start this series because there are so many books!
Heather,
Don’t be intimidated at all. Once you start reading this series, you r going to fall in love with all the men in these books. You will be upset that you didn’t read them sooner. They r very fast reads b/c they r so good and juicy. Lol. Start them and enjoy!
Oh really? haha. I have the first two on my bookshelf…maybe i will!
Yes it seems like a lot but once you get started you will get hooked and before you know it you will be don’t and wishing the next one was out already! They are my FAVORITE vamp series.
I agree Brandy. I read the Dark Hunter series and even though they were good books they were no where near as hot as the Brothers. I can’t wait for Lover At Last.
Why is the Lover Reborn book so much more expensive then the other 9? 🙂 I have read them all. I loved the last one, Lover Unleashed
The only reason I can think of is because it is still new I know in 6 months usually the paperback will come out.
Heather,
Do not be intimidated by the amount of books in the BDB series. Trust me that you will be thankful that there are so many books because you just want to keep reading one after the other. Like Tracy said they are very quick, but very good reads. You will be back here commenting on how much you love the series and wondering why you were ever intimidated! 🙂
Claudia
You are absolutely right!!! They are so good I’ve considered reading them again
Tracy,
Well I’m only on the 5th book so far, but I’m sure I’ll feel the same way since I already love them so much!!
Goodness.. i think you guys may be right. I am almost finished with the first one!
Heather,
Wow. I knew you would love it! Happy reading
Heather
I’m so glad you gave yourself the chance!! Enjoy & trust me you will… 🙂
It’s so funny, because first I remember thinking “Pffft, Please! Nothing can top the Immortals After Dark series.” But after reading these, I dunno…it just all felt more..personal and close knit. I feel much more invested in these characters. I don’t want to skip around series to series, but as soon as I read the newest BDB, I may have to follow your advice and go to the Breed and Dark Hunter series.
Can someone please tell me, in Enshrined – it starts of speaking of “the Wizard” – I am lost – who is the Wizard?
man it has been so long it feels like since i have read that one and to be honest it wasnt my favorite one… I just pushed myself through it to just finish it. I cant remember completely but I think it is just the voice in his head. that is telling him what to do or something when he feels confused .. I think..
and if i remember correctly he smokes so he wont hear it. the more he smokes the less he hears it..
thank you – I “sorta” thought that was it, but wasn’t sure if I had missed something
Love this series! I’m totally hooked!!! My favorite brother is V but I am reading Tohr’s book now and it is my favorite – not finished yet but can’t put it down!!!
Brandy:
I LOVE your lil side saying and it’s very true, u are never alone w/a good book!!! 🙂
Maryse, I agree with your mom- Rehvenge’s book was my favorite of the whole series. I love him! There was something about him that touched me and he sacrificed so much to keep his sympath side hidden to protect the people he loved. He’s just awesome.
Terri… I adore him too. One of my favorite brothers (I think my #2 or #3)… 😉 *heart*
So we have to wait until March for Lover at Last 🙁 How long do we have to wait until the next book in the series????? I need more!
So, loving these books, after reading Sookie, Magverse and all of Game of Thrones…was sad, and needed a new series, your rec’s are right on target with what I adore reading! Right now “Z” is my favorite, but apparently this is because I haven’t gotten to Rhev’s yet, Lol. Oh, and what did Charlaine Harris say…Something about a book being the cheapest vacation ever? I agree!
I love love these books so totally hooked on the brotherhood I love V his my favorite gosh I can read them over and over again
Hey Maryse! I just started this series the other day and I’m in love….the reading order you provide is it up to date (being that I’m a million years behind…lol)? And do you suggest reading the Insider’s Guide as well?
Finally started this series 3 days ago…and just finished book #4…and probably wont rest until i am done with them all…no rest this weekend! Z is by far my favorite…
Thank you for the list in order. I was on her Website and the books listed there were confusing and I though I had missed something. For example when you click on “Lover Awakened” is takes about Thohrment, not Z. On a Different note, I am reading Lover Reborn and really looking forward to Lover at Last!!!!
I started reading this series full steam ahead, but unfortunately life, who knew, gets in my reading way!! lol I’m reading Lover Unleashed right now. At first I thought I didn’t like Payne, but now I’m just rooting for her and Manny. Can’t wait to see how they end up together because they just have to be together!!! I am loving this book at the moment, but I think that my fav has been Rhevenge’s story. He was just so touching and so much happened in that book!!!
I just started the series and just finished book 5, V’s book…so far he is my fav vamp!!!! Then Z, then Rhage…hehehe I am so in love with this series.
I love this series too! I am just reading them all again for the 2nd time. I was tied with Z and Rehv being my favorites until I read Father Mine the novella in the Insider’s Guide. Father Mine just made Z my favorite brother!
I loved these books so much that I went and bought them in 1st edition hardback. I don’t know which one is my favorite between Z and V. You know they have twitter accounts and you can “talk” to them.
Just read Dark Lover and can’t wait to get my hands on the rest!
I too have fallen under the BDB spell! I first read the series a few months ago, having been told by my friend that I “HAD” to read it and I’m glad I did!! Re-read it about a month ago, it’s that good haha! Can’t wait for Lover at last to come out in March. While I wait I’ve just started the Fallen Angels series, but I feel like I’m cheating on the brotherhood haha. My fave brothers are John and V. I loved Z’s book but I got a huge soft spot for John. And I just love V’s one liners! Also the way she describes Rhage kinda makes me melt a little!!
I randomly borrowed the first book from my library. It’s been on wish list. The ebook was available so I borrowed that. I think they sent me the notice on Friday and I was glued to the book! OMG!!! I was going to hit up my library for the rest but I don’t feel like wait. Think I’m going to get them for my Nook and then look into getting the hardcovers! Obsessed after reading only one book! Sheesh 😀
I just happened on to your website and boy do I ever agree with your comentary on the books you have read. What I am shocked about and want to share with you is another favorite author of mine, Alam Katsu, the Taker Trilogy, great reads. I guess this trilogy would best fit in your paranormal catagory. I highly recommend her books. Check them out, you won’t be sorry!
Z is my favorite Brother! He’s hot, dangerous, and his quick one-liners just bowl me over….Next would be V. I just love him. However, after reading Lover Unleashed, I am waiting on the reaveal that Manny is in fact a half-breed. I have just started Lover Reborn today and hope that my question will be answered. One of the best series I have ever read.
I really love all the BDB every time I think I have a favourite brother , I reread a book and change my mind lol
If you can’t tell already I’m slightly obsessed with this series 🙂
Just finished reading Lover at Last…loved it! So glad Qhuinn & Blay got their own story…at last, I waited forever for that one, and I love the fact that there are new characters introduced, it makes me look forward to the next one in the series. Can’t wait!!!
LOVE ♥♥ me some V, true. Ahhh, waiting to read Quinn’s book!! Thanks soooo much for the monage video!
I’m totally obsessed with all things vampire! I love that you share your readings here for us. Kresley cole has a Scottish lycae in one of her books that I loved! My aunt turned me on to the bdb and I was hooked from book one! I’m so in love…I also really like gena showalter although sometimes I don’t find enough action in her writings. My favorite was always sherrilyn Kenyon and I have a collection of almost all of her books! The dark hunters are oober sexy too 🙂
The Black Dagger brotherhood is so good! I really enjoyed it! I could not stop reading!!! This should be a movie of a tv series!! I hope there will be more black dagger brotherhood come soon
Hey i am almost done reading The Black Dagger Brotherhood books. What is a great read after all that greatness?? Hope you can help 🙂
Demonica series Larissa Ione Must read in order
Club Destiny Series by Nichole Edwards Read in order (HOTT)
Midnight Breed Series Lara Adrian
Dragon Fire Series Deborah Cooke
Fever Series Karen Moning (my favorite after the BDB)
Oh and PS: The next book is going to be called “The King” She announced it at Lover at Last book signing. It comes out in 2014.
Have finally drowned myself in this world and now I’m at the end, am in mourning… Sigh. Need to find my new fix. Where to though from here? Just don’t want to let them go yet. Trawling Mayse’s reviews for ideas… 😉
Marsye,
Thank you so much for recommending BDB series! I read about Zsadist’s book on your “These books made me forget to eat” list and i immediately started on the first book of the series. I literally am DEVOURING THEM! Just started Zsadist’s book 🙂 You’re the best!
Stephanie! You are SOOOOO lucky!!!!! To read these for the first time again… *sigh* Just wait until you get to V’s book.
Maryse-ah so excited!!!! I try to read them slow but that is literally impossible! i’m worried i will finish them too quickly!
I have read the entire BDB series twice now and have to say (I read about 3 books per week) that there is no other series that can compete (although Midnight Breed and Fallen Angels are a close second).
I love your website Maryse…it’s my go-to site for book recommendations, please don’t ever stop blogging! 🙂
Thanks Cheryl for mentioning Midnight Breed & Fallen Angels series. I’m having an inredibly difficult time leaving my BDB world. I’m reading them over because I just can’t seem to leave this world. Everytime I finish one I get a terrible ‘hangover’ and sometimes have to just put them down & breath a little (lol). I can hardly believe that a series of books can make one so emotional! I’ll have to give the MB & FA series a try – take on a new adventure… :-)))
Hi Teri I fully understand. ..I absolutely love BDB series but really think you will enjoy Midnight Breed and the Fallen Angels series…they’re so good! Happy reading 🙂
I have terrible book depression – just finished reading the series straight through! My favorite brothers are V and Quinn – so much depth! I have these images in my mind of the compound, the warmth of the characters, etc. It’s a great series.
Andrea – I understand completely, as soon as I’ve finished a BDB book, I miss them already. So looking forward to the next one coming out in April! 🙂
I don’t seem to be able to put the BDB books down every time a new one is due to be released, I read them all again beforehand I love all of brothers but Z is my favouite by far just keep on writing books for the brotherhood please.
Yes Sadie, I get you. I love them all but Z, Rhev and Qhuinn are my absolute favourites..couldn’t decide between them so all three get top billing 🙂
Well I officially finished the series. What an incredible journey! I’ll admit, there were some books I absolutely loved and some I wasn’t too crazy about. Ultimately though, bravo to J.R. Ward for creating such a vast and unique world filled with characters I just loved to love. I especially could not get over Lover At Last. Quinn and Blay’s story absolutely stole my heart and brought me to tears more than once. No idea what to do with myself now that the series is over!! Any suggestions? 🙂
I had just finished the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon but what got me into JR Ward was that she was in a book of short stories with SK and her story’ Son of Man ‘ was simple and lovely.(I read it over 6 times!)
I have finished reading the first 4 books and my favourite so far is Zsadist. Such a troubled individual. I also loved the story between Mary and Rhage. My only gripe is the urban slang I have to go to my ipad to find out what they mean! LMFAO!
I’m dying to read The King but I’m wondering if I need to read Lover at Last first before I dive in. I know Wards books are sort of a continuation on the back stories and I wonder if I will miss something important to the story. Thoughts?
I’m not a reader of M/M romance because for some reason when I read I tend picture myself in it but when I read about m/m blurbs I tend to picture by brother and his partner…HA! LOL! For F/F I tend to picture my co-worker. It’s like catching your parents doing it. I know I’m weird. LOL!
I absolutely love this series! My mother got me into it. Rhage is my absolute favorite. I want a book for iAm to come out so bad!
B
I think you should read Lover at Last, because you will miss out quite a lot with new character developments and what not…plus Qhuinn and Blay’s story is so beautiful 🙂
…and Shelby
Iam and Trez’s story is next! 🙂
I have about 100 pages left on the King and I’m bumming because I don’t know when the next book is coming out! I’m addicted to this series. Do you know how long I’ll have to wait for a new book? What else do you recommend to me for reading that are similar to these stories?
Have you heard of Christine Feehan? Her books are similar to JR Ward. Sexy vampires , strong women, enemies to fight………
she should honestly consider a series, I bet it will be way better that vampire diaries and twilight. am so addicted to this series.
Another series you might like is Tina Folsom – Scanguard Series. It fall in line with the BDB but it’s a little shorter. I love this series as well. I read them in between BDB and it really ties me over til the next one. But my next problem is am dying till the next Scanguard. Happy Reading Everyone!!
Late to the party but I’m here . I could a series of books I can fall in love with. What I can not understand why has this not made it to the silver screen or at least mini series on HBO. I’d be pinned to the screen every night it was or at best first in line opening night at the movie. If she needs JD Ward needs casting suggestions I have a few . BTW had JD Ward ever done any book signings or interviews ?
BDB are by far my favorite series. After King I was ready to read the next one, but of course it’s not out yet. They are an addiction. When the next one comes out I will read them all again. Definitely a fun bunch.
Will there be another book in the BDB series??
So you have to read the books exactly in the order you have posted up?
Yes kim there is another coming out in April 3015, “The Shadows”
Sorry that was a typo. I meant April 2015*
I really hope we here more of the King and his family. ? Looking forward to the shadows. After reading the King I can see a few avenues that are left open – hope you write about them.
I really want to know something about Rhage and Mary. I really want them to have a baby and can’t wait for a new book..
Thank you for all the wonderful comments about the series, I love them so much. I love that you all share other titles and authors. I wasn’t sure what books that I could read and now I have a few more authors to find. I have read the serious by PC Cast and her daughter called House of Night, but I do want more books more like BDBH. HON is good for fun reading not as intense more for a younger crowd but nice to just relax too.
wow I’ve had this series in my read pile for years, I can’t believe i’ve waited so long to read them. I’ve read all 12 book( to date ) in 4 weeks now I’m addicteed and eagerly awaiting the next installment.
I highly recommend them and have bought the 3 for my best friend
Love this series
Holy Man! I need to read the rest of these books! I have read Dark Lover and now need to read the rest. I am in serious need of my BDB Fix. My husband won’t see me for a few days he put all the available books onto my kindle.
I love the Dark Hunter Series and also the Belador Series.
Thank you for creating suck a great world! BDB is my escape from reality. I don’t know what I would do with out it! Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with the world! You Rock!!!
When will we see a book about MHURDER???
Blood kiss us out, just bouhgt it. Live this series
We loved this series of the Black Brotherhood
Are the stories after Lover Enshrined, short stories?
Farher Mine is a short story, what about all the others which follow?
Lover Mine
lover Unleased
Lover Unleashed
Lover Reborn
Lover at Last
The King
The Shadows
Blood Kiss released Dec 2015
The Beast is scheduled for release April 2016
i loved these stories and have turned on other readers. Its been about 9 year’s so since I read all six, so I am giing to read them again then go from there to the newer ones. Appreciated your readers sharing other book series to also read . Keep writing, was wondering where your idea came from for the series?
The last 7 books you mentioned are all full length stories…and we’re a fantastic read! 🙂
Which book actually had the birth of Wrath’s son? I remember her finding out she was pregnant but not the pregnancy or birth. Did I skip one?
It’s in The King. You probably don’t remember because it all felt a bit rushed. The birth was just kind of an add on. And not much detail on the actual birth
I love these books! I can not express how much I enjoy reading this series! Thank you J.R. Ward!!
I am reading the black dagger brotherhood series. I also see that J R ward has other series that kind of go along with the brotherhood. In what order would you read all the books from all the series that she has. I feel like I am missing so things that I should know. Hope my question makes sense.
Hi Tracie!!!
This list has them all, exactly in the order they should be read (and have been released). I hope that helps!
The best books I’ve read in a very long time. My friend told me about the Black Dagger Brotherhood books by J.R.Ward and said ” Just read the first one and you’ll be hooked!” And I did. And I can’t stop reading them. Fantastic Books!
Can I just say, you have listed Blood Kiss before The Beast, and yet, in The Beast the Brownswick School massacre hasn’t happened yet? While in Blood Kiss it is the first thing they mention, and it happens half way through Beast….. I suspect these two need swapping in your reading order? Please and thank you very much.
Hi Samantha!
Thank you so much for letting me know, however these are listed by publication date and Blood Kiss was released to be read in 2015, and The Beast was released to be read in 2016.
I hope this helps!
Just returned to the series after many years break. Should the reader finish the BDB and then move to legacy? Or should Legacy be incorporated into the sequence? ALSO, there seems to be some “disagreement” on exactly where the legacy books fall in the order. Can you give me a clue why some lists say “Blood Kiss” is before “The Beast” and some say it is after? Thank for the advice
Hi Lee!
They are listed in order of publication date (as in… when they were first made available to the public, to be read).
Blood Kiss was released in 2015, and The Beast was released in 2016.
Therefore it would seem that the author/publisher intended them to be read in that order considering Blood Kiss was released before The Beast.
I hope that helps!
I wish this could become a series to watch! I have been a fan since book one. I fear that I am reading them too fast….literally tapping my foot waiting for the next one.
I was not a book reader until two of my good friends recommended this series. WOW, is all I can say! I am officially a book reader, as I have read this series twice so far…I’m a bit obsessed. I wish the message boards would start again. I really enjoyed reading some of the brothers board posts from the Insiders Guide. Looking forward to the new ones coming out in August and November:))
They now put out a monthly newsletter. I know it’s not the same as the boards, but it’s better than nothing. You can sign up on JR Ward’s website.
Is book 19 a typo, or there is book 18 missing on this list? And thank you so much for this list 😀
can you please do all your novella into audiobooks please
My sons name is rhage
My son’s name is Rhage
Very cool!!! I love that spelling too. How old is he?
What is book number 18?
Hi Tabetha!
The Sinner is #18 (coming out next March 2020)
The next one coming out in just a couple of months – November – is “Winter Finds You” (for some reason, Amazon has it listed as #19 even though it comes out before “The Sinner” —> which they have listed as #18).
I have a feeling they’ll be re-numbering them properly soon, as these are the next two upcoming releases.
When did Butch become able to demagnetized ??
Question, does the novel Prisoner of Night come under a different title?Chapters does not have it on their computer thankyou
First I want to say thank you for the list! May I suggest a slight change of order if I may? I have just read The Beast and as yet the training programme isn’t open, and in Blood Kiss Paradise gets in the programme.
Thank you
I loved lover unleashed. But cant seem to find them in stores ..i found this 1 at a goodwill store in palestine Texas..
Where does the novella story of son fit i to the list??
Officially, it’s not a part of the series, however since it DOES take place in BDB’s town of Caldwell and I’ve uncovered some interesting tidbits about how it could *possibly* relate to BDB, I included it under book #6 (by its publication date).
I did a ton of research and here’s what I found out:
https://www.maryse.net/reader-questions/reader-question-where-does-the-story-of-son-fit-into-the-black-dagger-brotherhood-series.html
I also added it to the above reading order guide in the correct order. 🙂 It may not have started out “connected” but it sure seems to be shaping up that way.
For those asking about where “The Story of Son” fits into the Black Dagger Brotherhood series, I did a ton of research and here’s what I found out:

I just finished The Sinner. When should I start the other series by J. R. Ward? Do they intertwine with the BDB series?
The BDB series, as it looks above, is all you need.
Other J.R. Ward series don’t intertwine… other that one cameo in a book from a completely different series, where we saw Phury walking down the street. 😉
Not enough to consider them connected. Though also a great series on its own.
Very addictive reading this series of the black dagger brotherhood.gripping ! Read the first 14 books and just ordered 7 more. Very hard to stop reading this series. Great author J. R. Ward. Best vampire series I’ve ever read. Should make movies from this series.
Excellent read
I’ve read ALL of the BDB books. Just finished The Jackal and I can’t wait for the next book! I’m constantly revisiting your page to see if more books are added to this collection.
YAY!!! Thank you so much for letting me know, Monique!!! Your comment just made my day!!
I just discovered J R Ward books. I love The Black Dagger Brotherhood books. They are AAWESOME and I can’t seem to put them down.
Can u plz update this list? So far this is the most complete in order list I’ve found, and I’m catching up fast to the end of your list. I’ve really appreciated your attention to detail in putting this in a suggested reading order. It has helped me better understand all the series. Thnx again!!!
Hi Dana!!
Done. All updated with 2 new books on preorder. 🙂
Thank you so much for your sweet comments. It makes my day when I know my reading order lists are helping.
*safe hug*
Love the help with the lists…ever think of doing pdf’s for download? That would be even bigger 🙂
Also any clue on where to find Lee Child’s Jack Reacher Series…in order of not chronological for books…but chronologically for Reacher? Meaning it would start with the ones military and roughly follow Reacher’s age.
Great site.
Great idea, Tanya… I shall look into it. 🙂
Here’s my “Reacher” list, but I bet it’s chronological.

I haven’t read these yet, but one of my BFFs was obsessed so I built this list because of her. I’ll look into a different reading order version.
Have you read her Fallen Angels series?
I read the first 2 books. REALLY good (a bit gory in a certain scene) darker feel to them.
Have you?
Does the fallen angel series fit in with the BDB books or is it a separate series?
Hi Julie!
It’s a separate series (as far as I’ve read into them) with occasional EXTREMELY light cameos (like one where they are walking on a sidewalk and some dude with long multicolored hair walks by them – Phury 😉 )
That’s about it from the ones I have read (and cameo-remember)
You need to add in the Fallen Angel series in your timeline.
Hi Tanya!
I haven’t really noticed a storyline/character crossover or BDB characters having any real role in this series. Are they truly merging together?
Davina makes her appearance in The Sinner
Tanya is right. Phury pops up in the Angel series. And as of Lover Arisen, Devina comes back (with her heels, collections and thoughts on her therapist 😆) and she mentions the angels and her one true love.
Thank you for the list! Her website is not up to date!
Missing ‘The Viper’ releasing in September from the Prison Camp series. Plus the Audio only ‘Darius’. Apparently a written version will come later on
I love these books
where does the book “Darius” fit in with reading the BDB series
These books are very amazing I love them
So because of your blog and great reviews, I’ve bought the first 4 books and read the first one. Was great!!!
Oh they just keep getting better and feel like family. You are so lucky that you can binge them for the first time and experience that feeling of “home” that they become. And of course, one HUGE crush after the next. Can’t wait to hear which one ends up being your book boyfriend. 😉
