This book (which will become a trilogy) has been recommended vehemently by quite a few readers. I must say… I am convinced. I will read this. ASAP! Like… this week! Also I just found out, that after only one book, it will possibly be made into a movie! “Warner Brothers optioned A DISCOVERY OF WITCHES and its sequels in July”
As per Rebecca:
“For those of you who haven’t read A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness, Go and buy it now!!! Such a fantastic book. The first in the All Souls series and the next one due to be released in summer ’12. Its kind of a grown up Twilight, but better! And I never thought I would hear myself say that about any book!! Move over Edward Cullen, Matthew Clairmont is THE vampire :)”
As per Danette:
“Deborah Harkness – A Discovery of Witches. She is a new author, this is her first book so have to wait for the others (which we all hate)… but its a great read!!”
and Brandy told me:
“My newest love is A Discovery of Witches by Deborah Harkness. Wow! I would describe as supernatural meets Outlander.”
About book #1:
A richly inventive novel about a centuries-old vampire, a spellbound witch, and the mysterious manuscript that draws them together.
Deep in the stacks of Oxford’s Bodleian Library, young scholar Diana Bishop unwittingly calls up a bewitched alchemical manuscript in the course of her research. Descended from an old and distinguished line of witches, Diana wants nothing to do with sorcery; so after a furtive glance and a few notes, she banishes the book to the stacks. But her discovery sets a fantastical underworld stirring, and a horde of daemons, witches, and vampires soon descends upon the library. Diana has stumbled upon a coveted treasure lost for centuries-and she is the only creature who can break its spell.

- The Book of Life: A Novel (All Souls Trilogy) <— expected release July 15th 2014
Ohhh I want to read it but I’d hate to love it and not be able to gobble up the next one ASAP!
I was thinking the same thing! I hope #1 doesn’t end on a cliffhanger cause I’m thinking of reading it this weekend…
Just finished it. Didn’t know it would be continued until I had about 100 pages left and realized there was no way the story could be wrapped up. Definitely ends on a “cliffhanger” but I probably won’t be picking up the next book.
I just finished A Discovery of Witches for the second time. The first few Chapters were tough to get through, but after those, I can not put it down. Soooo looking forward to Book 2.
Definitely interested in where book #2 is going…
Just finished Discovery of Witches! Loved it! If it was available I would drive to the nearest store and buy the second one. And from a marketing stand point why wouldn’t they release it now? Before people get busy and move onto other things and forget about it? People are drooling for it NOW! I love the book but this isn’t Harry Potter, Lord of the Rings or Twilight cult material. Just my opinion but they are going to lose their audience just when they had them captivated.
Jessica… I agree, it’s so hard to wait on the next book in a series. Sometimes I even find myself re-reading the last couple when the new one is about to be released, so I can remember what happened while I read it.
Maryse…That’s exactly what I was thinking. I usually pass on books I really like but this one I will have to hang on to so I can read it again to know what’s going in the second one. 🙂
I just finished Discovery of Witches and loved it – I think it will appeal to to readers who like history mixed with their fantasy – being a bit older (I am) gives the reader a different perspective and adds to the appeal of this book and the others to come. I am really looking forward to the next in the series but waiting will be hard.
I loved this book and am getting quite excited now as the release date of the follow up is drawing near, HAPPY DAYS!!! I loved Matthew but hey what is there not to like about the strong powerful dominance of a vampire. Totally able to picture the whole events unfold due to the descritive nature of the author. FAB!!!!!!!
Love both books! Hopefully wont have to wait to long for the third book.
The books are awesome ….the comment above about it being a supernatural outlander is perfect ….I am always looking for new authors and ms. Harness has been added to my list ….read them both and now cannot wait for 3
As a male reader I was skeptical when I picked this book up at the urging of a friend. I found immediately that this was not what I expected at all and I could not put it down. It is a damn shame that this magnificent work will be forever be compared to the comparatively talentless authors of our children’s favorite series.
I’m reading ‘Shadow of Night’, now. I love it! I’m trying not to read it too fast though, as who knows when the next one will be released! I keep getting this delicious feeling of foreboding which of course makes me want to read on!
I read your first book almost a year ago. THERE IS NO OTHER WAY TO SAY IT. I LOVED IT. I THINK YOUR BOOKS ARE AMAZING THE TELLING OF THE STORIES. YOU TELL THEM IN A WAY WHERE LOVE IS THE TAIL ,NOT SELLING A STORY WITH SEX WITH THE MAIN TELLING OF THE STORY. BUT LEAVES you to your own thoughts. YOUR SECOND BOOK WAS EVEN BETTER. I CANT WAIT FOR THE 3RD BOOK.
AND IM AWAITING ON PINS AND NEEDLES FOR THE MOVIE I hope i did hear that right.
CONGRATULATIONS ON YOUR WIT AND YOUR AMAZING WAY TO TELL THE STORIES.
THANK YOU
I loved both of these books… Discovery of witches n shadow of night, but i am praying there will b a book #3, because i was very dissapointed when it ended!!!! SOON, i hope!!!!!
Read both books from the all souls trilogy. Loved them both. Thought they were very well written for her first novels. Could’nt get through them fast enough. I also agree much better than the twilight series. Would just like to add. I heard book 3 is done but is still untitled. Would be great if they could finally release it. Is there any hint of a release date?
Impaitiantly yours mary
Ps. Hope to see more novels by deborah harkness
