Alyson Noël’s Latest Release – Radiance

Here’s a new YA paranormal novel that has just been released, from the author of the extremely popular Immortals series:

Alyson expands her ‘Immortals’ story by giving Ever’s little sister, Riley, her own brand-new series. The first book in the series is ‘Radiance‘.

More about ‘Radiance’:

Riley has crossed the bridge into the afterlife—a place called Here, where time is always Now. She has picked up life where she left off when she was alive, living with her parents and dog in a nice house in a nice neighborhood. When she’s summoned before The Council, she learns that the afterlife isn’t just an eternity of leisure. She’s been assigned a job, Soul Catcher, and a teacher, Bodhi, a possibly cute, seemingly nerdy boy who’s definitely hiding something. They return to earth together for Riley’s first assignment, a Radiant Boy who’s been haunting a castle in England for centuries. Many Soul Catchers have tried to get him to cross the bridge and failed. But all of that was before he met Riley . . .

Movie Review – Let the Right One In – A Film by Tomas Alfredson

Let The Right One In
It’s a creepy and dark vampire movie, and yet, I wouldn’t call it horror. I read about this movie a year ago, and was intrigued, and finally had the opportunity to watch it last Saturday (I was still in mourning over finishing Mencheres’s book, so I wasn’t ready to officially “move on” yet). It is based on a Swedish novel by author John Ajvide Lindqvist, (here’s the english version of the book: Let the Right One In: A Novel). It was also a Swedish film (but subtitled, and I’m a foreign flick fan – so it was all good). The “foreign” aspect of it actually lends to the movie’s surreal, eerie feel.

It’s about an angelic faced twelve year old boy (Oskar), who lives with his single (and obviously harried) mom in a tiny apartment. He is poor, unpopular and severely bullied at school. One evening, he meets a young girl his age (Eli), ”mangy” in appearance, living with what seems to be her single father. Each night, they hang out together in the yard behind their apartment complex, cautiously talking, until they develop a natural rapport.

Her “father” leaves during the evenings with a suspicious looking kit. He finds unsuspecting male teenagers, puts them out with chloroform, hangs them upside down and then slits their throat to gather their blood. You quickly realize the blood is for her, and that she is a vampire. You also suspect that he is not her father, but the relationship between the two is unclear (and least it was for me). Probably watching it again would clear up my questions, but I’m not ready to go there again ;)

After his latest bungled attempts at blood collection, she is forced to feed directly from humans, and is obliged to kill them (if she does not, they risk “turning”). In his last attempt, he is caught by the police, but to keep from being recognized, he disfigures himself by dousing his face with acid, and then later, in the hospital, sacrifices himself to Eli, before he plummets to his death (what a morbid scene that was – whoa!)

Now Eli lives alone as Oskar’s neighbor, and he begins to suspect Eli is something other than normal. With her strange body odor, inability to eat the candy he offers (he spies her retching behind a building), and her reaction to his spilled blood when he tried to blood bond them as best friends, he confronts her. The movie features some of the usual vampire myths (burning in the sun, sleeping during the day and extraordinary physical abilities), but one of the most striking scenes was when she demonstrates exactly why she must be “invited” to enter.

The scenes that proceed are just as harrowing. From her androgynous ambiguity, to an accidental turning of a victim, to Oskar’s continued bullying, events unfold that change both of their lives forever. An American version entitled “Let Me In” is expected to be released October 1, 2010.

Dark and eerie, but most certainly interesting and captivating, I would recommend it, if you were in the mood for something somber that affects you deeper than the usual horror flick fear tactics. But it’s weird – you’ve been warned.

I’ve gotten my mom, mother-in-law, sister-in-law, and husband addicted!

And Alcide…OMG!!! I wish I had envisioned him (the actor) when I read the series…it *may* have skewed my affection for Eric somewhat…

Oh relax! It’s forever Eric for me :) LOL!

Update: Oooooh Eric! Did you see that?!

Meet My Blog-Sitter!

Well guys…I’m off again on yet another trip, but this time, I made sure to get a blog babysitter! Believe me, she will keep you entertained and laughing, and she is preparing some book reviews as we speak! And best of all, she loves vampires (and fae, and weres, and greek gods and – well – you get the picture ;) ) A girl after my own heart!

So here she is, my greatest blog bud, the Lily of Darkness herself (make sure to check out her equally *pink* blog at “Liliums Realm 2“) – see we even share the same favorite color!

Hi ya’ll! Maryse is out of town, she had to go to the Area 25 Sheriff meeting, so she left me in charge of the house. She is my maker, you see. She commanded me to keep this place clean and not have anyone over while she was gone. Well, you guys aren’t anyone, you’re friends! So come on in and have a nice warm bottle of TruBlood. We got got some O positive, it is “positively” my favorite! OK, I know that was cheesy, but I’m new to this whole undead vamp thing and I am not so cool and laid back yet.

I plan on taking over the blog for a few days, I am going to be talking about books behind my makers back, and even maybe hinting at some naughty stuff in them. You have to forgive my prudish maker, she is from the 1600’s after all. She kind of flipped out when she saw my ankles and elbows the first time in public.

“Act like a Lady!” she told me.

I was like “Yeah, yeah Ma, I know, I know. I’m 8 months old – I’ll dress how I want.” Like any smart child I didn’t say this stuff out loud, but you know, I’m hardcore like that. Unless she sees me, then you know nothing of this. NOTHING I TELL YOU. NOTHING. She did command me to watch my mouth and since we all know how once the maker commands you must obey I will be on my best behavior.

See you guys later, please remember to put the empty bottles in the recycle bin on your way out, we recycle in this house.

Today’s Twit-Bits – 03-23-10

I just received some new books in the mail, including Tsunami Blue by Gayle Ann Williams. Yay me!  This one sounds good and I can’t wait to start it. The heroine is able to predict tsunamis (and in this book, the U.S. has been ravaged by them). Bad-guy pirates want her for her powers, and, from what I gather, the hero of the book shows up naked! Could it get any better?

But before I get started on them, I have a couple of reviews to finish (for the latest two books I’ve read: Ecstasy Unveiled by Larissa Ione & Dead Sexy by Amanda Ashley).

In the meantime, I can still entertain you (and me) while I’m at my day job, with the latest author tweets…

  • Yasmine Galenorn twit pic’d the cover for her upcoming “Night Myst (Indigo Court, Book 1)” (her new series!), and has been tweeting snippets of her upcoming book “Night Myst” (see now don’t you wish you followed her on Twitter? You could read them all) ;) She’s also hosting a contest for a “Trillian Mug”. See her blog to enter.
  • Sherrilyn Kenyon announced that the next “League” book will be out July 10, 2010 and is about Adron. She also Twit pic’d the giveaways for the next fan club mailing.
  • Ilona Andrews blogged about her ARC giveaway of her upcoming novel Magic Bleeds (Kate Daniels, Book 4) - release date May 25th 2010
  • Jaci Burton has just finished writing her latest book “The Perfect Play” (or is it The Perfect Game?) today. Read a blurb here.
  • Laurell K Hamilton is on her way to a Paris book fair “Salon du Livre” (and appears to be not too fond of the plane ride required to get there)
  • Ann Aguirre wrote 3k words today on her latest book.
  • Richelle Mead just signed 150 copies of Succubus Shadows (Georgina Kincaid, Book 5)…think she can sign my e-book? No? Darn…stupid (yet awesome) e-books!! *pout*
  • From what I gather, Ann Aguirre and Carrie Lofty will be writing a book together? She tweets: “For those waiting to hear when our apocalyptic pnr will be out, stay tuned.”
  • Ellen Schreiber tweets a link to the Supernatural Summer Tour 2010 featuring some of our favorite authors who will be making appearances and signing books in six cities.

More to follow as I find more cool tweets…
