- WITHER (THE WITHERED SERIES Book 1) by Amy Miles <— ZOMBIE/POST APOCALYPTIC PSYCH THRILLER ALERT!!! Kiki and I have been excited about the “psych-thrillers” and scary books and she has been anxious to finally get to this one on her TBR list “I bought this one a few weeks ago, Wither by Amy Miles. It released last October but looks really good!… I am itching to read this one. I loved Red Hill!“, and OMG I want it!! IT IS MINE!! One-click!! So an epidemic takes over… and a vaccine ends up turning many that are “left” into sort of… zombies. And… “Growing up on the streets taught Avery how to care for herself, but no amount of self defense classes at the Y could have prepared her for the outbreak of deadly gangs, a corrupt government bent on using her blood for experiments and the depths to which desperate people would go to survive. She soon discovered that it was not the Withered Ones that she needed to fear, but those still human.“
- Bird Box: A NovelBird Box: A Novel by Josh Malerman <— HORROR ALERT!!! and while I was looking at that one, look what else I found. OMGOODNESS!!!! Tons of reviews, so many 5 stars it’s crazy, and that blurb? *gasp* Not on sale, but I don’t even think I care!!! I need this jolt!!! I love the title of one review “What a nasty little treat this was”. YES!!! “Something terrifying that must not be seen. One glimpse and a person is driven to deadly violence. No one knows what it is or where it came from. Five years after it began, a handful of scattered survivors remain, including Malorie and her two young children. Living in an abandoned house near the river, she has dreamed of fleeing to a place where they might be safe. Now, that the boy and girl are four, it is time to go. But the journey ahead will be terrifying: twenty miles downriver in a rowboat—blindfolded—with nothing to rely on but her wits and the children’s trained ears. One wrong choice and they will die. And something is following them. But is it man, animal, or monster?” <— HOLY MOLY!!! Terror with your eyes closed? YES PLEASE!! Can you tell I’m excited for Halloween? LOL!!
- This Is Not a Test by Courtney Summers <— END OF THE WORLD/ZOMBIES ALERT! <— Okay not on sale either but sounds right up my dark alley!!! It’s the end of the world and zombies have taken over, and 6 students are hiding in their high school (one of them doesn’t want to live anymore… due to something that happened weeks earlier): “As Sloane eagerly waits for the barricades to fall, she’s forced to witness the apocalypse through the eyes of five people who actually want to live. But as the days crawl by, the motivations for survival change in startling ways and soon the group’s fate is determined less and less by what’s happening outside and more and more by the unpredictable and violent bids for life–and death–inside.“
- Please Remain Calm by Courtney Summers <— And here is the sequel!! Eeeeep!
- The Martian: A Novel by Andy Weir <— And Fabi reminds us of this one!! “A reminder that The Martian movie comes out next month. This is one book to movie that I HAVE to see. If you haven’t read the book yet, you’re missing out. I know its classified as sci-fi. And it is sci-fi. But its so much more too. It’s a best seller and with good reason.”

Get Maryse’s Book Blog updates delivered by email (you’ll get one daily email that will have each post from that day consolidated on it).
It’s Friday and I’m all wound up! *skips around and tosses confetti* Anyways…I am totally in the mood for some zombie/apocalypse books now. I clicked Wither and This Is Not a Test…how FUN!!! As long as they don’t gut punch me like the second UTEOTW book did (but I still loved it). Also picked up The Air He Breathes, The Rub Down and More Than Lies.
I LOVE October with all of the Halloween stuff that is around all month long. And spooky books! Who else is going to read The House when it comes out next month? Yep, next month for me is allllllll about ghost, zombie and horror stories. 😀
Okay, bought More Than Lies. That blurb got me big time. 😀
Maybe I’ll finally read UTEOW 2 next month. That one just scares me emotionally. You all were gutted with it.
Tessa, UTEOTW is so worth it. Yes it hurts some, but i flew through that series, one book after the other. Funny Amy because I got Wither and This is a Not a Test too…..thinking I need a change from all the angsty romance!
I did preorder The Play and was happy I did…. $1.00 of all preorders is being donated to animal charities. And its Karina so….
And all this talk about The Diary of Bink Cummings has me intrigued.
And oh Bird Box! Okay Maryse, you need to read that one for me first before I spend that much money. Can you do it quick and review before Halloween? Lol!
ME AMY!!!!
While I will still indulge in my romance in October, I’m kicking it up with psych-thrillers and post-apocalyptic craziness!!!! 😀
And many some of those awesome mini-horror-movies floating around the internet right now that make me jump out of my skin in just 3 minutes! LOL!
Ghost love stories!!!!
Jean… I CAN!!!! 😀 YAY ME!!!! I’m way too excited for my thrills!
Amy, The House? Author? Did I miss something?
It’s coming out end of October Jean… I think it’s a love ghost story by Christina Lauren!!!
Okay I added “The House” to the pre-orders on this page. You can’t miss it! 😀
Feverborn was pushed back to January!
Thanks Maryse! We should all buddy read that one to celebrate Halloween!
Oh okay let me edit that, Laura, thank you!
Yes we should Jean!!!
Ok, UTEOTW is what again?? My old brain is dragging today!
I started the Air He Breathes, even though I’m really more in the mood for something lighthearted and funny after the last 2 cry-fest books. Thought the newest Melanie Harlow book would be, since she is the author of the Frenched series, but this one is angsty too. Thank God for alcohol!! It’s 5’oclock somewhere, right?!!
Cheryl, Until the End of the World.
Thanks Jean! 😉
Cheryl, one of those honeymoon books would work. 😀
Finished Sweet Gum Tree. Loved it! *sighs* Some heart hurt, some happy, love the epilogue. *grins* Pure great.
Ha-ha Tessa. I wondered are they continuations of stories from the Neighbor from Hell Series or standalone novellas?
I don’t know! I will say this, though. Neighbor from Hell series was so funny, it’s gotta be good. I got number one to start for when I need funny. Right now, PNR. SGT made it so I can’t read anything contemporary unless it’s a guaranteed 5 star. 😀
I have had Bird Box since last Halloween when it went on sale. I usually do not read horror but it kept getting mentioned on Book Riot. So impulse buy. Have been too afraid to read it.
Mini-horror-movies…what, Maryse?????? Okay, share the links missy…
Jean, you’re reading The House with us. ‘Cause we said. M’kay? M’kay. 😉
Yay Tessa!!! *happy SGT dance* Now you just have to read the second UTEOTW book…
Speaking of UTEOTW…Cheryl, you need to read that series too!! And it’s always 5 o’clock around here. 😛
Come on, Bev…read it. Reeeeeaaaaad it!!! We’ll build you a blankie cave to hide in if you get too scared. 😉
Lol. Right now think The Air He Breaths. But if you and Maryse want to read it I’ll jump in…..and then expect you to stay up commenting thru the night if I’m too scared to sleep. ‘Kay?
The blurb for The House….I’ll read it with you Amy & Maryse!!
How many books in the UTEOTW series and is it complete?
Yay Cheryl for The House!!! Especially since JEan is ignoring me and thinks she doesn’t have to read it. And UTEWOt is complete. Yep it is. And its good. and will kick you in the gut. But its good. So read it!!!
DEAL BEV!! But first guess what…hey Bev, guess what…
Guess what Bev…
I’m reading that Place and home book!!!!
MAybe tomorrow…
Amy, you were wound up for Friday! Yay!! Fingers crossed you like it.
Fabi, I just saw an A- review from a reviewer I like to read. Medusa is the heroine. And really good price so one click for me.
https://www.amazon.com/Sasha-Summers/e/B007W1HRX8
Maryse – when looking for my next book, I always stop by to visit and see what you have been reading. Thanks for all the wonderful recommends! Just wanted to throw out there that I found – The Air He Breathes – prior to your recommend. AND I was blown away! It hit all the marks…I laughed, I cried, I pulled for Tristan, I could not put it down!!! (I stayed up to 3 in the morning to finish it). A definite to add to your TBR list.
YAY!!! Thank you Donya!! 😀
Thanks Bev!
Yep Bev, I was “wound up” last night…caramel apple martinis will do that to ya. *snicker* And my head hates me for it this morning but they were SO good.
I’m only about 8% in but so far it definitely has that SGT feel and is just what I was looking for! 😀
I’m starting The Air He Breathes right now. Finished Wild Reckless and really liked it!
Amy, I’m definitely in for the buddy read of The House….October 6 right?
Hi maryse! I follow your blog for several months … I make so many compliments! … it is one of the best if not the best ever! Emoticon smile I saw that in your book list exists the category “He does not want her …” Unrequited Love “Book Recommendations” …. since my favorite category of books is the one where the heroine does not want to the hero, I wanted to ask if it was possible to create a list for this kind … a list that is the heroine who escapes and is emotionally elusive … as in Dublin Street by Samantha Young! I hope you answer me, kisses Emoticon smile
p.s. sorry for my english
Hi Carlotta!!
What a GREAT idea! I’ll get started. 😀
Amy, what are you reading?
I just finished The Air He Breathes. It was well-written and touching and heartbreaking and angsty, but not overly so, which was good because I’ve cried enough with the previous 2 books I read. Now out for a run while I think about what to read next. 🙂
Jean & Cheryl Air he Breathes is going to be my weekend read. 🙂
I’m very curious Amy. I’ve wanted to do a re read for years. Don’t hold back. Lol. Or bite your lip like Maryse. 😉 😛
I bite my lip? Nuh uh!!! 😛 LOL!!!!!!
Just downloaded a book for free and looked interesting….thought I would share. The House on Persimmon Road. Reviews look good.
Fabi, after I posted that I was all, “Wait it is Fabi that likes the myths, right? Or maybe that’s Tessa”, lol.
Wow, just the prologue of TAHB was heartbreaking……
I think it’s a both thing. *grins* I grabbed it when I read it. Also just grabbed The House on Persimmon Road too.
Lol. I’m glad Tessa. The review made it sound really good.
October 22 next Robert Galbraith comes out.
Yay Jean!!! Yep, it releases on Oct 6. 😀 I’m actually making a new collection on my Kindle app right now with zombie and ghost books for next month…gotta love Maryse’s lists ’cause they are making that job SO much easier!
Cheryl, I’m reading A Place To Call Home on Bev’s rec. I was so jealous that Tessa was reading Sweet Gum Tree for the first time, and Bev said APTCH has a similar feel…and it does!
Carlotta, that is a great idea. I like those types of books too. 🙂
Your English is great. Don’t worry, if there is ever anything we don’t understand, we will ask. 🙂
I heard yesterday that JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT is releasing a comoanion to her Lux series. It’s called Oblivion and will be Daemon’s POV with some new scenes. I love that series. Can’t wait for more D.
I saw that yesterday too fabi and already preordered it on Amazon (even though I still need to catch up on the series). Comes out December 1st
Jean, what do you think of the air he breathes, so far? I’m only 21% in and have to put it down soon for errands. I’m liking it and will probably finish today. But……well but. Can’t quite put my finger on it, there is something not lining up for me.
Hi all… just settling in to finish my Hate to Love You book, then will pick something new.
I’m feeling dark… and go *giggle*
Bev I’m only at 14% (had to get some errands done too) and just now getting back to it. Too soon for me to say, but you know i love the broken ones and just want to save them! I loved Emma immediately and the tick comment! Lol!
Grey, how about Owned by M. Never. It was pretty interesting.
Bev, I enjoyed The Air He Breathes, but I get what you’re saying. While it was well-written and sad and what happened to them heartbreaking, I think “intensity” was missing. Felt a little detached.
Amy, the blurb for APTCH sounds just like SGT.
I’m still reading The Air He Breathes too and I’m enjoying it a lot but yes it’s missing something (won’t be a 5*)…still really good! Also reading End of Days finally and that’s really disappointing for me…actually mad about how just blah this last book is 🙁 Tessa, you read that series right? Am I being overly critical here?
Glad to know Im not alone. But not even half way so we will see. I really feel like the mother/daughter relationship isn’t flushed out enough, too.
Cheryl, I read APTCH in the 90s. Then when I read SGT a couple years ago I kept thinking, “have I read this?” Lol. But enjoyed both greatly.
Michelle, nope. It lacked the insane intensity that was in the first two books. Also, the end almost seemed… okay. Does that make sense? I was expecting spectacular, and got okay. That makes it harder after spectacular. Also, thank you for the warning on Demonglass. Knowing it’d lack comparatively, I enjoyed it. You were right that it didn’t live up to the first book, but I still liked it since I knew it wouldn’t.
Tessa, thanks for the Rec, I may go with Owned… or Sweet Gum Tree, I am succumbing to peer pressure haha!
Oh, I thought saw a blurb somewhere that Never Never Part 3 by Tarryn Fisher and Colleen Hoover was coming out in January, anyone else hear anything?
Ok I feel better like Bev that I’m not alone with how I’m feeling about about a book. With End of Days, seriously I’m mad that it just lacks soooo much! Ugh I have high hopes yes but this is not even meeting the quarter mark. Same with Demonglass and the last book which I can’t even remember the name. At least I felt in that series, they had a slow decline and were enjoyable despite not living up to the first book. With End of Days, it’s like a different author is writing it – it will be a 2* for me…*cringe* but yeah…
Um, Maryse doesn’t bite her lip, she bites…
…peanuts. Yeah, y’all thought I was gonna go there, didn’t ya? 😛
Fabi, I saw that! But that cover…not feelin’ the love for that one. 😕 That guy looks too old and scruffy to be Daemon.
Yep Cheryl, SGT and APTCH have very similar premises which (for once) is *exactly* what I want right now. Although my heart is hurting more for Roan than it did for Nick…and my heart hurt a BUNCH for Nick. 🙁
Speaking of SGT…Grey, it may not be the dark read you are craving but my (biased) vote is for Sweet Gum Tree!!!
Aw Carlotta… *hug* Your English is just fine. 😀
Thanks Amy, I’ll look at APTCH. I am having trouble finding what I want to read next…nothing grabbing me. 😉 *off to mix something yummy to drink, can’t hurt with deciding what to read*
You’re welcome Grey. Both were good, though SGT isn’t dark, just good.
I decided to read More Than Lies next. Something about that blurb just gets to me.
Ok. Chapter 12. Anyone else find that slightly odd?
Amy, Maryse is a lady who bites her lip instead of telling us how she really felt about The Princess Bride, Lmao.
*skips after Cheryl* Oooooh!! What are we drinking tonight???
Bev…true, but did you see what happened with Fisher’s Light? I was crying over it and loving it and recommended it to Maryse, but when she read it she was more like “meh”…and I ended up drinking a crow cocktail. 😉
Amy, this? Have you actually tried one?
https://www.salon.com/2010/10/30/12_second_cocktails_the_crow_cocktail/
I hate to say it but Im getting to the point where I just want to skim ahead.
Yep Bev, that’s pretty much it except the recipe I used called for scotch, not rye whisky.
Personally, I preferred it when I substituted cake vodka for the whisky. 😉
Finished.
*bites lip*
😉
Now what to read tomorrow?
Amy, one too many of these….Stella Artois Cidre.
Read a couple on my tbr list, Boy Toy Chronicles- quick, fun read, nothing of substance, and finished Interlude (Rockstar #4).
The Allure of Dean Harper releases tomorrow, so at least I know what I’m reading tomorrow. Maybe it will release early!! *fingers crossed*
ooow *_* thank u girls! you have advice for me? right now I’m looking for a new book…but nothing of dark! The last book I read was the Cityscape Trilogy of Jessica Hawkins….awesome *_* ( andand I found this thanks to the blog and your advice )
What is everyone reading?
Not sure what to choose. It is one of those days they all look good. Its going to be a read/house work type of day. 🙂
Your list are the best! Thank you.
Happy Sunday everyone! What are you guys up to?
I haven’t read anything for the past week and a half. I’ve been getting into coloring for adults and having so much fun! But now I want to read something fun, lighthearted. Any recs?
Oh and can’t wait for The Allure of Dean Harper tomorrow *happy dance*
Finished More than Lies. Good, but not great. It could have been a swoon worthy book but for two things. I never really got to know some of the secondaries, especially Matt. More though, she softened real heart ache or angsty things. I should have been screaming and have tears, but instead, meh. The author just needs to learn to get us to connect, because besides that, I really liked it.
Anne, what is colouring for adults?
Fun? Lighthearted? Consequence of Loving Colton by Rachel Van Dyken. Had e in giggles and it was super sweet.
Fabi & Anne this is funny as I just read this post this morning. Lazy Sunday with coffee catching up on blogs.
https://bookriot.com/2015/09/25/learned-love-grown-coloring-books/
They also have this.
https://bookriot.com/2015/07/12/buy-borrow-bypass-coloring-books-adults/
Never tried this but bet its a great stress buster. Also, have seen people use them to keep hands busy while listening at trainings.
Carlotta, have you read Cocky Bastard or any of the Christina Lauren books? They’re pretty lighthearted and funny. Also Game On series by Kristen Callihan and Off-Campus series by Elle Kennedy. And btw, Carlotta your english is just fine. 😉
I just started reading Shifting Dreams by Elizabeth Hunter. My new thing is to read one book and listen to another on the way to work. Having trouble finding good books with narration on kindle unlimited though. I’ve bought a few but I won’t buy an audiobook unless I’ve read it so kindle unlimited is nice to try them out.
Michelle, I recommend listening to That Boy. Hearing it makes it so much more funny!! Kindle version is free and whispersync is $1.99. 🙂
Thanks Cheryl! I haven’t read that series and always like to get recs for audiobooks since some are not very good narration and do not match the quality of the books.
Wicked as They Come by Delilah S. Dawson is on sale today for $1.99. 😀
Those are great links Bev. Thanks. I’m intrigued.
Great links Bev! I love Johanna Basford books. They are very intricate but so beautiful! Fabi you should check them out 🙂
Thanks for the rec Tessa!
Okay so I know some think The Air He Breathes wasn’t five star but I have to say…I thought it was soo 5 star!! Anything that makes me catch my breath in the middle of the night and makes my husband wake, must be good. But I also know everyone is different. But I was coming off Empahatic and Every Wrong Reason and Hollywood Dirt. Which I thought all were good, but this, this woke my hubby. Ha! Anyway totally reco The Air He breathes.
Kristina, that’s one of the many great things about this place…we don’t always have to agree on the awesomeness of a book and can be honest either way, even if it’s not the majority opinion. 😉
Kristina, I really did love The Air He Breathes! It took a while for me to feel connected, but when I finally did, there were plenty of tears, especially for Tristan while reliving his nightmare.
