It’s reading weekend time, and I have a new review coming up (“Author Anonymous” which will be going live on Amazon in just a few of days!). I’m currently reading the urban fantasy novel, “Semi-Charmed” by Isabel Jordan. The first two books in the Harper Hall Investigations series are currently free on Amazon. I’m halfway through the first book and am really enjoying it. I appreciate that the heroine is snarky but doesn’t make ludicrous decisions that endanger her life every chapter (ie. she isn’t too stupid to live). The story also features a dark, tortured mysterious hero.
Here’s a bundle of 10 urban fantasy books for free. 🙂

Thank you Fabi!
Thanks Fabi and Sandra for the “deals” info.
I’ve been taking advantage of the KU free trial. Reading The Hollywood Heartbreak series. It’s good and since it’s free, I’m ok with a good, not great read!
One-clicked The Debt….couldn’t last two weeks without breaking my ‘no new book purchases’ promise. *sigh*
The Secret Wife Looks intriguing. I like the cover, too. Is it romance or chick lit, does anyone know?
Happy Friday ladies!!! Or what’s left of it at least…
One more week and I. AM. DONE. *skips around trying not to spill mojito martini*
As for reading, I’m still wrapped up in the Dark Elements series and LOVING it! 😀 Typical Jennifer Armentrout and perfect for me right now…I can’t afford time-wise to get *too* wrapped up in a book and then end up an emotional wreck. Normally I love that but not with finals next week. 😉
So, what have I missed the last couple of days? I’ll end up catching up on posts but y’all crack me up sometimes with how you sum things up. 😛
Escaping the Edge and The Secret Wife (*fist bumps Jan*) are definite clicks.
Ooh! And The Couple Next Door!
*happy Friday dance*
I so want to try and stick to tbrs, but two books that are coming out that I know will derail that plan.
The first is A Torch Against the Night by Sabaa Tahir on August 30.
The second is Labrynth Lost in September. I hope it lives up to the hype and cool cover.
Amy?? That’s not your usual avatar. …..right?
You turned into a purple grape.
*spits out martini and sputters*
A purple grape?!? What the heck! I still see my little mischievous red avatar with bat wings who is sticking out her tongue…
A Torch Against the Night!!!! Woo-hooooooo!!!
I sure wish the third Holy Trinity book was coming out as well… 😕
To me you have blue wings on dark purplish body, two little legs,3 little squiggly antenna, and eyes looking in different directions.
MichelleS, changed into a brown monster with bunny ears.
I think Lisa’s might be different, but not sure.
Got to read a little this week. Caught up with the sixth book My Commander by Alanea Alder. Meryn needs to be in every book – god I love that character! Starting read Wolfsong today and whoever found this one *BIG APPLAUD!*
And now I think Tessa looks different too. This is freaking me out.
What’s funny is Michelle’s avatar looks like that squiggly grape!
Tessa yours is blue with green arms, two horns and bright red lips. Has it always looked that way?
I am NOT a squiggly grape! Whoa Bev whatcha drinking tonight and can I have some!??
Amy is s grape & I’m a brown bunny monster. What. The. Heck?
Busy busy busy. Still reading Unveiled. Will finish this book this weekend if it kills me (it might, getting out of town visitors).
Michelle – WOLFSONG!! Yay. Loved that book. 5 stars!
Bev – you’re still the crazy green Viking monster. Yours didn’t change. Fabi’s looks a little wonky too, no?
Yours is purple but not squiggly. Green hair, one eye, and open mouth with teeth. Is that what you see?
Seriously I’m in trouble with Wolfsong because I can’t stop reading and I have to work tomorrow morning bright and early! I just teared up at the simple “you help me too” part…gah the writing is soo good for a random UF. Did you find this book MichelleS and how?
Bev nooooo haha just…no
Well…I might see that in the mirror tomorrow morning if I sit up half the night reading…
Fabi, looks the same I think. What’s weird is yours and Amy are different in old posts too.
??? The avatars look just the same as always to me, Bev. Sumthin spooky going on with you…….. :0
Im having avatar swap issues too now…..and Ive stopped getting up dates on posts in my email stream even when I click subscribe. Theres a gremlin here somewhere!!!
MichelleS, sees them too.
To the emails on occasion mine has done that too and then they will all pop up in my email.
I see dead avatars……….
Just been reading some book reviews in one our Australian newspapers. A couple of the books that had good reviews – some of you might be interested.
The Call by Peadar O’Guilin. New YA coming out next week. Sounds a bit like Hunger Games crossed with Irish mythology and faery. (I know, right?) The reviewer loved it.
Tell The Truth, Shame The Devil by Melina Marchetta. Coming out in a couple of days. I think it may have been mentioned here before. First adult novel by the author of Bev’s beloved Jellicoe Road. Crime fiction/ family saga. Sounds pretty good.
BTW, if you like YA, you might enjoy Marchetta’s other books Looking For Alibrandi, and Saving Francesca. Both powerful, emotional, well-written and uplifting YAs (those books are quite a few years old though, and I think one of them, Alibrandi? has a suicide).
Happy , HAPPY Saturday everyone!!! Man do I LOVE Saturdays! I feel Fall is around the corner (despite the 98 degree weather)….so it’s like that Christmas Eve feeling…..football games, awesome cup of coffee, warm blankets, bonfires, hayrides, festivals, great new releases to snuggle under a throw blanket to get lost in! Yeah, all the wonderful things….sighs.
Soooo…just want to say…if you haven’t read Anti-Stepbrother….what are you waiting for??? I really, REALLY floved it! It reminded me of The Deal…not the storyline but the writing and flow. Ladies, with a Anti- Stepbrother…who needs a Stepbrother anyway?!?! Something about those brooding, quiet bad boys who are not always what they initially seem that I really LOVE!
Oh, and Midnight Soul by KA was nothing to sneeze at either…really, really enjoyed it…but I am a KA fan so….
Michelle I am so glad you are reading Wolfsong. Everyone I know who has read it has loved it. It went straight into my favorites. I wish I could wave my magic wand and convince everyone to read it. I don’t push books often. But Wolfsong simply must be read.
Now that I think about it, my book slump started right after Wolfsong. :-/
Amy, I have a makeup question. What product do you use for your eyebrows? (Maryse, I’m not asking you too because I remember you saying you don’t do anything with yours 😉 ) I’ve been using either Anastasia powder duo or pencil in blonde which doesn’t seem to do anything. Granted I don’t have great eyebrows. Is there a tutorial you would recommend also?
LOL Cheryl… I’m so scared of my own eyebrows. *snort* 😛
Just started A Promise of Fire and so far so good.
Oh, and there is some mythology mixed in which is fun. Cerebus just made a cameo, lol. The H wants the h for her abilities and tells her she is coming with him. Her reply is, “Not even if Zeus showed up as a swan and tried to peck me in your direction. I wouldn’t go with you even if my other option was Hades dragging me to the Underworld for an eternal three some with Persephone. “
I don’t see the bunny but sI see the grape. Weird. I will get around to Promise of Fire. You gotta tell us how it is. It does look good, so I put it on my wishlist.
STILL reading A Court of Mist and Fury. It’s really good, but I’ve been falling asleep too easily this week. I’m at the end and GAH! Seriously good. I loved how dark it started out. It fit without being cliche. Yet now, Well, I knew it wasn’t going to end with this book, so a bit of heart pain. Soooooo good.
Ok, this is totally random. But I just discovered Maine Coon cats, if I ever decide to have a cat again, this is what I want.
Or one of you cat lovers on here should get one, I’ll live vicariously.
I LOVE THOSE bev!! HUMOUNGOUS CATS!!!!!
Tessa, it’s fun so far. I’m trying to think how to describe it. Definitely fantasy romance. Though seems to be a dangerous world on the lighter side. It’s not fantasy with a capital F, if that makes sense.
I do have to say there has been a couple of times the word choices have seemed off for the world but that might just be me.
In a very slight way the current set up is reminiscent of Garwood. In that the heroine has a hard back story and is now surrounded by this group of warriors who just want to adopt her into the fold, lol.
Maine Coon are adorable, but I wouldn’t want to subject it to this heat here. This has been a mild summer, but normally it gets in the 100s most days. That much fur would make an unhappy kitty.
All my cats have been basically mutts either from the pound, abandoned, or through an animal shelter. They have no type.
DG…you are crazy perky today and I’m oddly jealous of it. LOL!!
And Bev…um, I’m with Jan. I think sumthin’ spooky is happening on your end. 😕 Did you see her comment about Melina Marchetta’s grown-up book? Yay us!
Tessa, how…HOW am I supposed to choose between Roth and Zayne? I don’t think I’ve ever had this issue in a love triangle! I always wanted Aiden for Alex and Daemon for Katy (though I still liked Seth and even Blake…to an extent), but this time around I don’t have a team. Roth is just all kinds of awesome but Zayne has always been there. DANGIT! The end result is going to be bittersweet, isn’t it?
YEsssss! Worse, the author didn’t know, so made the rest of us vote. I couldn’t because I didn’t know either!
OMG Maryse…I’ve heard of being scared of your own shadow but being scared of your own brows?? LOL!!!!
Cheryl…I use Anastasia’s Dipbrow Pomade and LOVE it. I use the Makeup Forever eyebrow brush (#274, I think) because the bristles are harder and stiffer (*hee hee* just the way we like it) and that works best for me when applying the Dipbrow. I also use the Anastasia Brow Wiz pencil, which has a *very* fine tip, to further define them depending on how much eye makeup I have on. Both the Dipbrow and the pencil are staples for me, and I never go without either one. Hope that all helps! 😀
Seriously, Tessa? She had the readers vote??? That’s just cruel. I couldn’t do it either!! I don’t want either one of those guys to get hurt, but I don’t want an ending like in that one series (you know the one I’m talking about where she ended up getting all three guys but it would be at different points in time, like after one died and sh!t…I’m still p!ssed that I invested time in that series only to have it end that way :|). I *know* there can be only one guy in the end but my heart is going to HURT for the one who has to walk away.
THIS SUCKS!!!!!
MichelleS sees it too. You are a squiggly grape.
Apparently they are considered dog like and very cuddly and friendly. And love water and playing in it.
Jean or Fabi don’t you ladies want a cat. A coon cat?
Michelle, have you met one?
Amy, did you see that Maryse reviewed an Amy book?
*GASP!!*
No! I didn’t see that! Wait…is it that Author Anonymous book?
*runs to check out review*
Haha Maryse. I’m kinda scared/intimidated by mine too. They’re not great and whenever I fill them in it seems like woah that’s eyebrows.
Amy I’ll have to try the pomade. The powder I have seems to end up flaky looking. Going to Sephora today so I’ll look at them and then I’m going to look at the MAC eyebrows in lingering. Watched a YouTube and like how it went on. Thanks!
Most of my brows have fallen out (health issues) so they only go about halfway across and are very narrow, but between the Dipbrow and the pencil I am able to make them look fuller and more complete. Sure you can tell they are filled in, but I actually get complimented quite a bit on them.
And hey, if those products don’t work out for you then you can always return them. I love that about Sephora. 😉
Amy…what can I say…it’s a feeling in the air! A rush of fun things to come! Here I will share…*passes Amy the Mason jar*. Small sips.
My eyebrows are blonde currently. :/ They are there, but you can’t see them. It’s the same with my eyelashes. Blonde! *sighs*
Amy, yeah, the answer wasn’t both of them. I’ll tell you my feelings about it after you’re done but it hurts either way.
Can I say just because I saw it and I’ve seen it in books so many times. NO ONE FROM CALIFORNIA SAYS SOCAL, NORCAL, OR CALI.
That is all.
Hahaha…….so The Horde wouldn’t ever call their California chapter Socal then??
Aussies have never ever thrown a shrimp (we call them prawns for starters) on a bbq…..ever. and some of us hate vegemite!
Of course not Lisa.
Because you throw it on the barbie.
A Place to Call Home by Deborah Smith is 1.99.
Really liked this one.
@ Bev – I had a maine coon cat. She was beautiful. All fluffy, with beautiful markings & big huge double paws.
I had to Google them but wow. What fantastic cats!! They’re gigantic.
Leslie, did it like water?
Lisa. Nope. Especially because S. CA is easier to write. Only car companies say Socal or NorCal.
No shrimp on the Barbie? All my delusions ruined. *grins*
LOL Lisa. So true. I have bbq’d the odd prawn in my time. We do love our bbq’in here in Australia. But a shrimp on the barbie? Nevah. I do have Vegemite on my toast for breakfast, though 😉
Thanks for the California clarification, Tessa. I read an amazon review a while ago where someone (maybe it was you! LOL) made a similar comment, but I just thought they were being grumpy, cos I’ve seen the Cali, Socal etc variants quite a few times in various books, and so assumed they must be in common parlance. Interesting that it’s not so. Why do authors do that???? Lack of research, maybe?
Just feel like sharing. My hair had been looking very limp and flat for awhile, especially after some highlights. Usually I stay away from protein as if your hair doesn’t need it it can really dry it out.
But lazy Saturday and thought why not? I has come across a diy treatment of half a sachet of the clear gelatin in enough water to soak hair. So I washed, gelatin rinse, let it sit a few min, rinsed. Then conditioned and styled as usual. Whoa. Definitely gave it some bounce almost too much, lol.
bev… now I have to try it!!! Clear gelatin, huh? I do LOVE DIY home masks and such… curious about adding something to my hair. FUN!!
@ Bev – Nope, my cat did not like water!! She wasn’t dog-like either. She was a typical snobby cat with superior attitude. Like she knew how pretty she was. Hee hee. She was friendly & cuddly but no more than my tabby cat was. I like your gelatin tip. Might give it a try.
Btw…it makes me CRAZY when authors don’t get the proper regional lingo!
So, A Promise of Fire is fun and all but Cat, the heroine, is almost too special. I know that is a fantasy trope, but it is getting a bit eye rolling, lol. I think it’d go down better if we started before she was so special and saw it all develope. Now Cat is a well developed character but the hero isn’t and it is taking away from my enjoyment of any potential relationship.
This could just be me though as most are loving this book.
I actually have a person I met on GR to help me with Miami lingo for my book, but I havent been able to reach her lately, so if any one is super familiar with Miami, let me know!! 🙂
Tessa!! TESSA!!!!
I’m dying here! Like, cringing and hiding under the pillow and saying no, no, NOOOOOOO!!
“He” just got her out of the cab outside the “club” and I don’t want to continue ’cause I don’t want to know what’s going to happen ’cause it’s not going to be good and someone is going to have a heartache and so will I and gahhhhhhhh!!!!
*pulls blanket over head and whimpers*
I know! It’s insanely angsty, huh? *hands you Manny* There you go. You’ll need it.
Speaking of angst… A Court of Mist and Fury. GAH. It took me over an hour to read the last few pages. I’d read a page, do solitaire, stand, whatever I had to to avoid all the ACK that was happening. This was soooo much better than the first book. The emotion, the depth, the action, the intrigue, it all was there. My hands are still literally trembling with how it ended. That feeling in your muscles that the angst was so high that it starts tensing your muscles. Then, it ended and and and… Things just flipped in ways you never saw reading the first one, yet the clues were there. Sooooooo sooooo sooooo good.
Amy, I tried the Dipbrow and pencil last night at Sephora. I *think* part of the problem with the Anastasia powder and pencil I had tried was the color. I have blonde which really didn’t show up too much and last night tried soft brown, which showed up more. The Dipbrow definitely wasn’t flaky like my powder. Thanks for the rec!! 🙂
You and Tessa have me curious about the Dark Elements series.
Finally going to start Sawbones. I hope it’s good.
Ok, just a couple chapters in but so far just want to sit and read it but can’t. I hope it holds up.
We just jump right into the story. The heroine is a doctor and when the book starts she is meeting with one of those grave robbers that used to give bodies to surgeons to practice on.
On her way home her childhood friend finds her to tell her the police are looking for her to question her about a murder. Basically she has to run. This all happens in the first chapter, so just set up.
It’s just her first person pov, so far. I read in a review that she would classify it as historical fiction with romantic elements not HR. So we will see.
Anyway. …..knock on wood. Can’t wait to get back to it.
GAH!!! TESSA!!!!!
*grabs Manny and squeezes the ever-lovin’ life out of him*
Jager shots! NOW!! Please????
I hope everyone is enjoying a beautiful Sunday afternoon either soaking up the sunshine or immersing in a great book. -or both-
Cheryl, glad it worked for you! I use the light brown as well and love it. I’ll have to send you a pic (on GR, maybe?) with one brow done and the other not so you can see how it works for me.
And YES! You should give the Dark Elements series a shot. Did you read her Covenant or Lux series? Because this one is right up there with those two, and I LOVE getting lost in the worlds she creates. It takes me back to my early PNR-obssessed days that I miss so much at times. Right now I am a mess over all that just happened…needless to say, I’m in my kind of heaven!!! 😀
You too, Fabi!
*squeezes Fabi*
I’ll take a jager please 🙂
Fabi, I just got back from Erica’s. I crashed her this weekend and met her girls. Needless to say, I haven’t read a single sentence!
Random, but does anyone have bitmoji? I’m obsessed. You can make little emojis of yourself! I can’t stop. I’m making one for my husband now!
Fabi, Wolfsong I’m almost finished with but the feels, just THE FEELS! Gah sooooo good, I will never forget this one! NEED more from this author asap. It has that WiR thing where I feel like I’m in the story 😀
Bev, Maine Coons are cool cats. The ones I’ve seen think they are small dogs. My fav breed is forever Russian Blues though. I just adopted a tuxedo cat (not a breed but that’s their coat pattern) named Stewart.
I already have two cats. Snowy white ones. Cat breed. lol If I lived alone I would most certainly adopt any and all cats. I’d be the poster cat lady. But my favorite is the Siamese. Especially it’s long haired cousin, the Himalayan or the look alike Birman.
Michelle, TJ Klune is actually quite a prolific author. I’d say his most popular book is Bear, Otter and the Kid. I haven’t read that many of them, but I’m not the only one saying Wolfsong is his best so far. He has a lot of dedicated fans.
*hands Amy two jagers* You’ll need it.
What ARE you reading Amy?
Lisa…the Dark Elements series by Jennifer Armentrout. Love, love, LOVE her PNR series. 😀
Yes, just half the packet to warm water. It is easy to have too much protien, and usually I focus on moisture. But thought I’d give it a try.
