Happy Friday everyone!! I’m finishing up a book today (super-romance and absolutely made for us!!) and will be reviewing shortly, and then I think… maybe time to choose an adrenaline-pumper. I want a fun/scaryish reading weekend. Something dark. Or that has a mind-blowing, super-clever twist that I didn’t see coming. I have a few on my list, but if you have a recommendation for me, I’m all ears!
I’m also thinking something poignant and emotional and life-changing (always unputtdownable and unforgettable), but… *sigh* my wonderful mommy has left me this morning, and headed back to Canada. I think I’m already feeling too melancholy for that. It’s bittersweet, you know? Best time ever, but saying goodbye is the worst. Knowing it’s coming, each day, one day closer and reminding myself… don’t think about it. Just live in the moment. Enjoy each and every moment.
And I did. I had the best couple of weeks with her, celebrating her birthday, Canadian Thanksgiving, experiencing a hurricane with her (although we were safe on the west coast), going on a cooking spree (I cook now, too!! And she’s proud)… and talking books (in fact, I just inherited a paperback copy of Mr. Mercedes by Stephen King all used and read and recommended to me!!! I’m excited!).
But even though I already miss her, and was not ready for the visit to end, I’m so happy to be back to my books. Because no matter if I feel melancholy at times, I’m never lonely when I’m reading a good book. Have you noticed that? She and her friend and I were discussing that very fact… the character’s, the “worlds”, and the stories make us feel always, as if we’re part of an adventure (fantasy, or realistic, romance, or a sweet YA). Part of a group. Part of a family. Yep! They keep us company! 😀
LOOK WHAT WE FOUND!! (NOTE: bargain priced when I added them, but prices can change on Amazon, so make sure to check before you finalize your order. Sales listed are for Amazon U.S., however some of the Amazon UK links also reflect the sale!):

- Southern Pleasure by Kaylee Ryan <— LIVE!!! HE’S TRYING TO KEEP HIS DAUGHTER… “My ex signed over her rights and her family vowed that my daughter didn’t exist. Now that she’s gone, they want my little girl. They’re trying to say I can’t give her what she needs…“
- Torrid Affair by Callie Anderson <— RECOMMENDATION FOR “WHAT TO READ AFTER ARSEN” and Nay recommends it! (P.S. Welcome Nay!!!! I’m so glad you’re here with us). 😀 Nay: “Ooooh Torrid Affair! I read that last month and really enjoyed it. It should be on the ‘What to read after Arsen’ list! It wasn’t at all what I expected and I think that ended up being a very good thing. Enjoy, Ela!“
- Bittersweet (True North Book 1) by Sarina Bowen <— SARINA BOWEN ALERT!! This one is super-bargain priced today ’cause book #3 is coming out soon!!
Teri: I just finished Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen. I love her and this one did not disappoint. I actually think it’s the best I’ve read by her. The writing was great, the story fun, steamy and kept my attention throughout. The secondary characters are interesting and I can’t wait to read book 2. Read it in one sitting.
- The Tutor by K.D. Grace <— HE’S A RECLUSE AND HE HIRES HER ALERT! This is a recent release and Lisa is enjoying it!!!
Lisa: Did anyone else one click, The Tutor? I did, and I’m in the middle of reading it…and phew, I had to stop reading and take a breather, cuz man is it erotic, and I love that broken man!!!! Of course, I can’t read it at work during my down time, cuz well, that’s just not the way I want to be at work, LOL. Just want to know if anyone else is reading along and thinks it’s as amazing as I do!!!
- Ruin & Rule (Pure Corruption Book 1) by Pepper Winters <— PEPPER WINTERS BULLY BOOK ALERT! Tessa is our resident book-bully addict, and she just warned Amy and I away from this one (’cause as much as we like bully books, sometimes they infuriate us too much and we rant. LOL!! It seems this may be one like that). But if YOU love a good, hardcore bully book, Tessa is enjoying it!
Tessa: I’m insane over jerk Hs who are just mean, bullies, a$$holes… Speaking of jerks, Amy and Maryse, don’t read Ruin and Rule. I love it but you two would have issues like you did with Fear Me. I’m loving it.
Grey: Slides Ruin and Rule up the list…
- Rainfall by Melissa Delport <— ONE OF MY FAVORITE, MOST UNFORGETTABLE BOOKS EVER! Cristina just discovered one of our absolute favorites, so OF COURSE I’m posting this one on here, to insist you all read it!!!! It’s got a clever twist that had my heart in a lurch!!! (my 4.5 star review)
Cristina: “Rainfall”… just WOOOOOWWWW! I went into this completely blind! I made a promise to myself, not to read any reviews, and I’m SO happy that I didn’t! It’s been a long time since a book has made me weep like a baby, and this one had me SOBBING by the end! I must confess that I have a love/hate relationship with this book. I LOVE the story, but HATE the way it made me feel after reading it. Don’t get me wrong, this is one of the best stories I’ve read in a very long time! It left me with not just a lot of different emotions, but a lot of DEEP feeling emotions. I truly felt this story, all the way to my bones!
I will STILL be thinking about this story for quite some time to come! The relationship develops rather quickly in the beginning, but this story isn’t about the falling in love, it’s about the fight to hold onto it. One of the reasons this story is so unique for me is because I usually don’t connect with a H/h if the connection or relationship is too quick. I always go for the slow burn, so I wasn’t quite sure in the beginning, BUT then there’s the twist and THAT”S what got me, hook, line, and sinker! I’ve come across a lot of books over the past few years that I have liked and even loved, I very rarely come across one that truly guts me. Those are the books that I feel for days or weeks, and even after the feeling has faded, it always arises again at the mention of it’s name. I would love to say more about this book, but it could take away from the next reader’s experience. All I can say, is that this is definitely a 5 star read for me! Thank you Ms. Delport for ruffling my feathers and giving me those feels all over again!!! Phew! It’s time for a drink!
Cristina: Ladies, I’m still grieving over Rainfall! It’s one book I would LOVE to see on the big screen. It would literally having me SOBBING in the theatres, Notebook style. Grey you SOOOO have to read this one! Don’t forget the wine and tissues!
Jean: Christina, we all feel you with Rainfall…..hang in there.
Maryse: Cristina!!!! Rainfall was one of my most favorite books. EVERY DETAIL I remember… that twist, and that ending *oooooooooomph*!!!! LOVED IT!
- The Soul Summoner by Elicia Hyder <— LOVE TRIANGLE ALERT and Gloria recommends it! “Hi! I just read the Soul Summoner series by Elicia Hyder. It was fantastic. It is a paranormal romance with a love triangle that you’re not sure how it’s going to go for a few books. Do you know of other series with a similar story? TIA!”
- The Ground Rules (Book 1) (The Rule Breakers Series) by Roya Carmen <— TWO MARRIED COUPLES and this one MADE CRISTINA CRAZY! Yep… many of us reacted like this, so you know I had to post it! Cristina: “…Ground Rules was another book/series that invoked some very STRONG feelings in me. That series was a freaking emotional yo-yo for me! It’s one of those situations that you’re saying to yourself, “NO WAY would I EVER do something that crazy!” BUT then you’re so darn curious that you can’t help but want to know what happens!! I just knew it was going to be a train wreck and I willingly and eagerly hopped on for the ride! I literally was yelling at my Kindle, several times over…”
- Patchwhore by Kim Jones <— BIKER BOOK & SHE’S GETTING REVENGE ON HER CHEATING EX BY SLEEPING WITH HIS MC BROTHERS and DG recommends THIS recent release!
DG: So…Patchwhore…is just HILIARIOUS. I love a good “revenge” book. Especially when the ex gets all JERKY…throw in some bikers…some hot and some not…yeah, fun read!
Jan: Huh. Patchwhore. I hate the title and wasn’t going to look at it, but DG now I have to add it to my TBR. *huffs out a pretend annoyed sigh, then winks*
DG: LOVED Patchwhore…will definitely be checking other books by this author…nothing better than a woman scorned seeking “revenge” on her ex…add in a TOTAL biker hottie with a little bit of mystery around him…just DELISH!
Northernstar: I am half way through Patchwhore (I also hate the title) but I am pleasantly surprise at how funny it is. I was thinking that it would be a dark read, but so far it’s quite adorable!
Cait: i just finished patchwhore and I bloody loved it! Cook is such an alpha! It was so Witty at times I just had to laugh out loud!!
- A Court of Mist and Fury (A Court of Thorns and Roses Book 2) by Sarah J. Maas <— ANOTHER HUGE RECOMMENDATION FOR THIS ONE! Jessica LOVES it!
A Court of Mist and Fury from A Court of Thorns and Roses series is a MASTERPIECE!! I am jealous of those who haven’t read this series yet because I would love to go back to the beginning and discover the world Sarah J Maas has created. All the characters are worthy of their own books… but the Hero in book 2… there are no words that could come close to describing what I feel for this captivating, multilayered, hauntingly beautiful soul… he is perfection… like top of the list worthy perfection!!! Maryse and fellow book lovers I beg you to shuffle your TBR lists around and put this series close to the top.. like real close *nudge, nudge* It is a series that is too good to sit on a shelf waiting. Yes book 3 is still to come but the anticipation is worth it. …And Feyre the protagonist is a complete badass… she is exactly the type of female character I admire… smart, resourceful, fierce but also loving, kind and gentle. I will stop now ;-D
- Throne of Glass (Throne of Glass series Book 1) by Sarah J. Maas <— SAME AUTHOR AND THIS SERIES IS MUCH LOVED TOO! Theresa is right there with Jessica in regards to this author’s awesomeness!!
Theresa: Hey Maryse…just wanted to throw out there an AMAZING reader recommendation…The Throne of Glass series by Sarah J Maas! I just binged read the entire series to date and I could not get enough! Sarah Maas is now one of my favorite authors…she creates a beautiful world of magic and mystery that is entwined with complex characters and a stunning plot that will leave you breathless. A 5 star read for sure…I can not wait for the final book to be released!!!!! Thanks to Sarah Maas for this amazing adventure!Ps- Also read her Court of Thorns and Roses and it was equally as beautiful…looking forward to indulging in the second read…Court of Mist and Fury! I can’t get enough!

Wow what a list!i just finished patchwhore and I bloody loved it! Cook is such an alpha! It was so Whitty at times I just had to laugh out loud!!
Ground rules oh gosh still think of that book and the ending I’m still divided on!!!
I am half way through Patchwhore (I also hate the title) but I am pleasantly surprise at how funny it is. I was thinking that it would be a dark read, but so far it’s quite adorable!
Northern star and Cait, I LOVE funny and adorable. SOLD!!!!!
Mist and Fury… yeah, no words. Book one was good, but the second. It just twisted everything you thought from book one.
… I’m scared of Rainfall.
RAINFALL TESSA!
There’s a bully in it. 🙂 THAT, I can promise you.
Maryse…..Let me guess, WE all start to love the bully and he dies?
I just snagged Kele Moons book 1 of her Battered Hearts series Defying the Odds for free and book 2 in the series is .99! If you like MMA books kele is a great author.
Also Madaline Sheehan has her first book in The Holy Trinity series free. It’s called The Soulmate. I loooove this series and have been waiting for the last book to come out forever. It’s supposed to be out soon!
I made my own blankie fort!!
Ela… my lips are sealed. But… I wouldn’t go into it, thinking that… or whatever. 😐 Er.
*sigh*
Ela!? Okay? I wanna tell you but I can’t ’cause it’s SO GOOD, and you have NO idea!
LOL!!!!! 😛
R is that from the Exorcist? Super creepy.
No I have her on a ladder. Long story why, but I’ll post her later LOL. This is some random feature creature! We’re hauling Jason to Camp Crystal Lake right now!
Huh. Apparently I even went so far as to pay for Rainfall. I thought I got that one free. *moves the book to a different collection*
The bully… dies?
Here is the album. The sun is being difficult! https://s350.photobucket.com/user/robinhillwrites/library/Misc/Halloween
Robyn! I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THAT DAMN BOOK FOREEEEEEEEEEVVVVVVVVVVVVVEEEEEEEEEERRRRRRRRR! I WANT MY DRAGON BACK DAMMIT.
Maryse? MARYSE? MAAAAAAARYYYYYYYYSEEEEE?????????? WTH? You totally did not just confuse the heck out of me nor did you endear me more to this WONDERFUL book????
Tessa….I DON’T KNOW IF THE BULLY DIES BUT PEOPLE ARE TALKING TISSUES AND THE BOOK THAT SHALL NOT BE NAMED I HATED SO I ASSUME SOMEONE DIES…..now Maryse got me all confused!
Yeah, NO R….that is super creepy…I’ll just stop by the fairy princess house or even visit the big bad wolf…
OMG R!!!!!
That blankie fort is the WORST. I AM NEVER GOING IN THERE!!!
BUT!
I wanna read whatever THAT story is… YIKES!!!! 😛
Maryse! I just emailed you!!!
And…what… a bully book, where???
Ugh. Super creepy, R. Now I’m scared to go in ANY blanky fort. What might be waiting inside? heh heh heh (That was supposed to be a wicked cackle……)
Here in Australia we call them ‘cubbies’. My kids used to make them on rainy days with blankys and dining room chairs, but I never found a desiccated corpse in any of them. (So far………)
Grey! Rainfall is supposed to be one. I am still petrified of it. So it is in my, I need a good cry section.
Now I’m just going to restart the modem. This is ridiculous. The internet has been misbehaving all day.
Santino Hassell who is my top favorite author right now has another Five Boroughs installment coming out. I think on Oct. 24. I know some of us love this series. It’s a continuation of Raymond and David’s story from Sunset Park! Woohoo!
I want Black Swan Affair. I dropped my book money on Crosstalk… Maryse… I’m waving my finger at you!!! Are we reading this or what?!? I’m gonna have to read one of the ones I already have or wait for another ARC to grace my space LOL!
Grey… we should. 🙂
But… the start was so… okay “start” it and tell me what you think of that “mode”
R. Maryse posted all of are favorites of 2015. Individual post each Saturday, they were really fun to read. If you go up to her menu they are under her list tab. Like Fabi’ favorite fifteen and such.
I started Maryse, quite an info drop in the first chap and all the names and spellings make me twitch a little…but I’m intrigued enough to go further, I’m on Chapter 4…
Ohh!!! Okay this is promising then, Grey. I will continue too.
Thanks for the reminder, bev. I just had a quick scroll through those fav lists. So many goodies! More to add to my pile. Mwooo-hah-hah. *rubs hands together in gleeful anticipation*
I’ve been on the fence about some of Connie Willis’s previous books I’ve read. I’m intrigued to see what you all think of Crosstalk.
I went back and read my TBR list, and I still have some on my TBR still from that list. 0.0
Tessa, it’s crazy how long some of these books can sit in the tbr pile. At the time I just had to read it.
Remember. Russia. Sunday.
Good evening!
So I went through and marked Rainfall, Full Tilt (and All In) and Patchwhore for my reintroduction to GR! Oh, and Four Letter Word, which I’m really liking because of the super sexy, KA-ish never-starts-a-sentence-with-a-pronoun hero!
For Patchwhore, do you need to read Clubwhore first? I know it says Patchwhore is a standalone, but it’s still part of a series and I’m a bit anal about reading all the books of a series in order if I’m going to miss out on something.
I love stories about single dads and Southern Pleasure was definitely worth the read. You will fall in love with the Dad!
Awwwww Maryse, I’m sorry you’re missing your mommy. 🙁 But I think it’s so sweet how much you love her!!
Okay, A Love Letter to Whiskey is MINE. Something about that one has me itching to read it…maybe I can squeeze it in before Sunday?
Tessa!! Read Rainfall!!! It really is unique because of where it goes with the story. It totally blindsided me, and I LOVED that!!
Robyn…I have been impatiently waiting for the last book in that series as well!! Last year (on my birthday, in fact!) there was author news that it would be coming out soon. That was over a year ago. Dangit.
And Ela…you have to go into Rainfall not knowing anything. HAVE to. If you have any inkling what is going to happen then it will ruin the story. No spoilers for you!!!
Im reading The Hating Game from a little while ago and its bloody hilarious. Fantastic writing, sharp and witty.
Loved Beard Science. Its like visiting the set of Northern Exposure, there are all these quirky eccentric characters. Love Penny Reid’s writing.
Ela, Ela,Ela, you just have to read rainfall. It’s the best book. So twisty. Loved it. So clever and it’s absolutely intriguing. From the first chapter until the last. Definitely 5 stars. Millions of different emotions. You will really miss out if you don’t read it. One of my top reads this year.
Yay, Lisa. Isn’t it fun?
Only 13% into Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil, yet exactly what I want for this weekend. Love when that happens.
Maryse!!! You must absolutely stop what you are reading (or as soon as you are done reading your current book) and start a Love Letter to Whiskey. I have been in the biggest book slump, and this book has totally brought me out of it in the best way. It stole my whole life away, I literally ignored my child and boyfriend
Maryse!!! You must absolutely stop what you are reading (or as soon as you are done reading your current book) and start a Love Letter to Whiskey. I have been in the biggest book slump, and this book has totally brought me out of it in the best way. It stole my whole life away, I literally ignored my child and boyfriend
Hey there, just an FYI… Beard Science by Penny Reid is already out!
@ Danielle – I love books that make me ignore my family! Ha ha ha
It’s funny because when I read Consequences series I not only ignored my family, but I couldn’t sleep or eat or bathe. 😉
Hey Nay
The style and tone of Clubwhore is a heavier, darker read. I did read it first and the crossover is minimal.
You definitely can read Patchwhore as a standalone. I finished PW last night – good read.
BTW, Just started “It Ends With Us” by Colleen Hoover. I have been saving this one for a rainy weekend, and the weather on the West Coast is very wet. Perfect.
Ok, back to the Thoughtless discussion from last thread….
R, Silly girl…I know you were joking about not liking Thoughtless cause I loved it…but you should know that although I am petrified of death and depressing books, I have read a lot of angst/tear jerkers/heavy/dark reads. The more I read, the less I am able to tolerate though. I am completly wacky where the sadness from the books will seep into my real life and literally depress me. I obviously need therapy as fictional characters impact my life so much. Ugh! The Thoughtless series is full of angst and tears so you will def love it!!
Tessa, it took me a year to get up guts to read Thoughtful. It was beautiful….but a tough read as I love Kellan as much as I love Edward. Get Manny, chocolate, blankie fort, and drinks ready…i cried like a baby.
I’m telling you guys!! A few fluffy pillow and a wet bar and that fort will rock! (Just don’t look up!)
I’m excited Leslie! As soon as I finish Hausfrau, I’m on it! I just wish I had more time to read this weekend!
*squinty eyes*
R. I have to do it. I need to press the button. I know what you will say, but I neeeed to.
Wait? What button?? I’m still a little asleep…
oh…THAT button!
bev, I downloaded a sample. That’s the biggest commitment I can make at this juncture 😀
I’m curious about the button. Anyone want to clarify?
Yes, thank you, lol. Honestly, I actually get really nervous about others reading my recs. I don’t want someone to spend the money or time on a book that is a no go for them. So a sample is great.
Though i have read books that i love but the beginning was slow or rocky for me and books I loved the beginning of and then it fizzles.
Hold on Fabi…..
She rec’d Dumplin to me.
Have to one-click A Love Letter To Whiskey and I can’t wait for Black Swan Affair- that blurb got me!!
Ela, what Amy said. Read Rainfall, but go in blind.
R. those pics are CREEPY!!
Believe me, I understand. Taylor Jenkins Reid is who I probably recommend the most and she’s pricey!! And people either love her writing style or hate it. Also the Gabriel’s Inferno series. I LOVE, but his writing style is the same thing, love or hate and he’s $$$ too. I recommended It Ends With Us to a friend the other day and she was not happy with it and it was expensive too!
Whispers, “I haven’t read Rainfall either…” *hides*
I’ll post the finished pics when we get the lighting done. It’s so much creepier in the dark. In the pic with the coffin and headstones, we have a bridge over lava. It’s so cool!
I’m still lost. I have no idea what a button has to do with Dumplin
She pressed the recommend button on GR. Knowing I don’t usually read the types of books she recommends.
R, when you read Rainfall I’ll read The Man I Love. It’s the only way it will not linger in my tbr. Accountability. 🙂
Oh yeah, she just rec’d it to me too. I can’t say its my type of book either.
Hmmm. I pushed the button for you too, Fabi. Just for demonstration purposes of course.
LOL!!! Thanks Bev.
Done Fabi!! It’s the Melissa Delport one, right? Just put it on my Kindle. When would you like to start???? YESSS!!! Fabi’s going fishing!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Oh…ummm…no hurry, no hurry at all. *wipes sweat off brow* Weren’t you going to read Thoughtless first?
Wait. Wait. Wait.
Fabi, rec ‘ d a book to R. A book she hates. And R rec ‘ d a book to Fabi. A book she loves.
Now does R think this is a Fabi book? Or Fabi think this is a R book?
Ouch. My brain hurts. I think Fabi has a love/hate relationship with Rainfall! But either way, I think I’m getting the better deal!!
Yes, technically I’m supposed to read Thoughtless first. Technically. 😉
Bev, the story…
Before I knew R very well, she jumped on one of my favs, Surviving Raine, which, of course, she hated because turns out we have directly opposite tastes in books. (Which is really weird because the one she’s writing is directly in my wheelhouse – but I digress.)
I want to read one of her favs just for solidarity and to get a good look at writing she admires. So, after spending like, a week, humming and hawing over how awful her favs are going to hurt, I finally picked The Man I Loved and put it on my tbr.
Now, considering what my tbr looks like, it would be easy to lose it in the haystack. So, in the hopes that she’ll now like a book I read (because I hated it), I’m going to schedule my read at the same time as hers so I force myself to keep a hold of that straw before it gets buried.
Makes sense? No? Oh well, it makes perfect sense to my convoluted mind. LOL
Actually it does. If she hated the book you loved (loved it too) she might love a book you hate.
R. Besides your top 4 what books have you loved/like. I was trying to think back but I think since you’ve been on here most of the books I remember you reading/liking have been from those 4.
Isn’t it funny how sometimes we all LOVE the same books and then can have such vastly different opinions on others?!?
Rainfall – I had this one cause of Maryse rec then started reading reviews/spoilers and promptly deleted from my library. NO THANKS to that sad one.
Surviving Raine – LOVED this one. Great jerky hero and love whole shipwrecked theme. However, this was one that should have ended with one book. I didn’t like direction sequel was going (read spoilers) and skipped it.
Gabriels Inferno – Biggest snoozefest on planet. Everyone but me liked this. PLEH!
Seems like everyone ’round here goes crazy for the various MC themed books…I cannot stomach these (and as hot as Charlie Hunnam is I couldn’t do SOA) . I also cannot do Kristen Ashley *puts on suit of armor for peanut backlash for this one*
It ends with us – Another one I just couldn’t do. I was all geared up for this then started seeing reactions, read spoilers and NOPE!! But I loved Slammed, Maybe Someday and Confess.
Enough rambling for now…getting ready to “go” to Russia (via Bronze Horseman)
I love a lot of KA. Some of her newer books……not as much. I can still remember basically reading At Peace, first one for me, under the covers late into the night.
Gabriel ‘ s Inferno just has never interested me at all. I may have read some excerpts and just no.
It Ends With Us is a maybe for me. Not sure. I’ve read some of the very few negative reviews and I think I might have a few of the same reactions. She is a very hit and miss writer for me. Like you with KA I never really got the adulation.
Rainfall I one clicked when everyone started raving about it here. Yes, I sometimes like the angst and feels. Then saw Fabi ‘ s reaction and promptly read the end of the book. Interesting twist, but I promptly said no. If I’d read spoiler free not sure how I would of felt about it.
Loved surviving Raine. The sequel was ok, not as good but didn’t take away from the first.
bev, Gabriel’s Inferno is in my top ten, but I honestly can’t tell you why. There was just something about it that gave me ALL the feels. But like Leslie said, she hated it. It’s really either/or. It Ends With Us is also in there, and I’m NOT a CoHo fan. I just loved the reaction that book pulled from me. The emotion of her characters lacks depth to me and did in that book as well. I also hated the ending, but because my reaction to it was so strong, it became a top 10 fave instantly. The Nightingale is the last non fab four in there. It’s number three on my list! I also loved A Little Too Far, Wild Abandon, and Captive in the Dark — all 5 stars for me.
Alright, I’m curious. What books did everyone love and you didn’t?
Collide
Avoiding Commitment
Consequence
Undeniable
Ugly Love
Forever My Girl
Taking Chances
His End Game
Axel
Oh, and Leslie, I love that you sometimes read spoilers too.
LESLIE!!!
“Seems like everyone ’round here goes crazy for the various MC themed books…I cannot stomach these (and as hot as Charlie Hunnam is I couldn’t do SOA) . I also cannot do Kristen Ashley *puts on suit of armor for peanut backlash for this one*
It ends with us – Another one I just couldn’t do. I was all geared up for this then started seeing reactions, read spoilers and NOPE!! But I loved Slammed, Maybe Someday and Confess.”
You are my honest to goodness CR book twin!!!
ummm, except for the spoiler thing. I won’t even read a book I’ve seen a spoiler for. I won’t even read the ending of a book I’m dnf’ing.
bev,
“Alright, I’m curious. What books did everyone love and you didn’t?”
No way in he!! I’m admitting to that. LOL I like my eyeballs exactly where they are.
Let’s just leave it at Rainfall. That one destroyed me so bad that I couldn’t hold back my comments if my life depended on it.
Oh, and Bev, I think I’ve only read one of the ones you didn’t like.
I’m usually not a big fan of CoHo as I mentioned. I’m with Leslie. KA does not interest me at all. But I think it’s Surviving Raine that I differ from everyone else on.
Oooh!! I know! I know! Push and Pull. HATED them! Also The Opportunist and 18. I didn’t hate those, just wasn’t a fan. Same with Surviving Raine. I didn’t hate it, the H just bugged me and I wanted him to get eaten by a shark.
That’s because you haven’t read most of them. hahahaha
I’m not sure sure I’ve read a single one of yours. Maybe Captive in the Dark. But I have to go see if it’s just in my tbr or if I actually read it.
That’s why I’m so intrigued to read one of yours. It’s totally outside my comfort zone. And I like stretching my horizons.
BTW…Surviving Raine didn’t work for Amy either. She doesn’t like the male POV books. Or, most of them anyways.
I think you and Amy have the most similar taste in CR. I have similar taste as Amy in YA.
Hey! Two we’ve read in common. Push and Pull.
Oh, you have me curious now, Fabi.
*rubs forehead and sighs*
Y’all are so damn chatty this morning. I need a few minutes to catch up and then I’ll throw in my two cents.
Because I know you guys will be waiting with bated breath for it. *snort*
*starts to turn purple waiting for Amy*
Hey Fabi! We both agreed on Archer’s Voice!
Thinking about it, while I’d LOVE for you to read TMIL, I seem to remember you having a specific trope you aren’t a fan of and it’s in this. But I don’t want to say the trope because it’s a spoiler. Is there a specific trope you try to avoid? Maybe I’m wrong.
R there aren’t any specific tropes I avoid. For me, it’s a combination of plot, characters and writing. That’s the way it should be right? Judge every book on its own merit?
Fabi, you don’t read the end even if a dnf? Is it cause you might go back?
I don’t know why bev. I guess if I’m disinterested enough to dnf I can’t be bothered to go see the end.
Good point.
I have to say, I really didn’t like Gabriel’s Inferno. I honestly didn’t like the h. She was too judgemental. R, I don’t know how it ends, but Fabi needs HEA. That’s a for sure. No death books for her.
I’m currently reading Rock Hard by Nalini Singh, and yeah, I’m waiting for the other shoe to drop. It’s all so happy now that you know, when it does, EEEP! Also, side random note: I noticed that Nalini Singh has had a few bad fathers. Like, a LOT. Interesting, no?
I can’t tell you why Tessa. I even made fun of the writing when I started it, but then all of a sudden I started LOVING it. Even though the H was an alphahole! It’s the one book series that will forever boggle my mind. And now I love his writing! I read the novella intro to his second series and hated it because it was seriously lacking in the romance department but loved the first full length book, but the second fell flat. Too much vampire politics maybe lol.
Gabriel’s Inferno?
Yes sorry, Gabriel’s Inferno.
Oh crap…BREATHE Fabi!!
I got distracted when I noticed some dirt on a baseboard in my kitchen, and I ended up going on a cleaning spree…
*Amy gets back just in time for Fabi’s funeral*
Wow. Lots of chat while Ive been snoring.
I cant really play Bevs game because I will read almost anything…but I need a kick start with Amys/Rs gut wrenchers and Maryse scary psych thrillers. I REEALLY have to be in the mood (the ‘mood’ being brave…..very rare occurrence).
I can list a few books Ive disliked that everyone else seems to love:
Sustained
It Ends With Us
Carnage
I didnt love Surviving Raine but I finished
Unfortunately I tend to have trouble going back to an author if I’ve not liked a book (gosh that sounds unforgiving) but I think its a lack of trust thing.
But mostly I’ll read and find positives in anything….except editing fluffs and poor writing.
Did not enjoy Surviving Raine Or Gabriel’s Inferno either.
Or Push and I dnf Pull.
There were vampires? Why don’t I remember that?
Lisa! Do not mention the C book around here. Just… don’t. Some go nutty when you do.
Tessa, his second series, The Florentine Series. The H makes a super minor appearance in the last of the Gabriel’s Inferno series
I… I… Goodreads so no spoilers!
Depends. Of the books I listed only 2 have I read another by the author. I’ve read new to me authors that I’ve been “meh” about the book but would read them again. Then of course authors that are hit or miss and authors I love but occasional books I don’t.
I know, Im weird Bev. The books that have really irked me are usually because I feel like the author let me down by writing an indefensibly vile character. Hence the trust issue around reading them again.
Im handing over my poor, feebly beating little heart to an author….I get kind of miffed if they shove it in a mincer.
And I just cannot forgive them writing abusive, f@#&wit male characters and packaging them up in a ‘romance’, bow and all, expecting me to ‘fall in love’. Not happening. Ever.
Ermmmm. *Quietly steps off of soapbox and slinks away*.
Okay, here goes…
Obviously I loved Rainfall and It Ends With Us and The Opportunist because of the emotional suckerpunches they pulled. And Badger (why do I keep thinking of that one lately…like every day!!).
Most on here know this about me, but male POVs rarely work for me (like Fabi said) so I didn’t love Surviving Raine and The Man I Love. Once in a while it does work, like with The Promise of Stardust. Oh, and certain YA books, like I Know It’s Over and Thirteen Reasons Why. For whatever reason, when it’s heavy on the love/romance and working towards an HEA, I don’t feel a whole lot from the male POV. I need a female voice as well in the story.
Fabi…now that all my older reads from my Nook are on GR, make sure you check out all the YA and YA PNR on there. I think a good chunk of them are lendable! 😀
Gabriel’s Inferno…I bought it when it was on sale in the hopes that I’ll someday be in the mood for it, even if it IS male POV. Hope springs eternal and all that wishful sh!t.
I’m with Fabi 100% on not bothering to read the end of a DNF. If I don’t like it enough to finish it, I don’t really care what the ending would have been.
Oh no, Lisa said the “C” word. Everyone find a safe spot and brace themselves…
*hides a lot of her books from Lisa*
*hugs Lisa* Don’t read any book I mark as dark.
*kicks Lisa’s soapbox over to the next person*
Oh wait, I need it back for a minute…
Speaking of DNF books, A Love Letter to Whiskey is joining that pile. *sigh* I tried.
*kicks away soapbox*
*hides heart-mincing books with Tessa’s books*
Shhhh…what Lisa doesn’t know won’t hurt her. 😛
*hugs Lisa*
Yeh I’ve got a few I didn’t like that lots of others seemed to like. I couldn’t get into/dnf’ed
Surviving Raine
Gabriel’s Inferno
Sustained
Player and Pixie
The Golden Dynasty
The Man I Love
I really WANTED to like them…… 🙁
I do like some MC books, but not all. I flove Lauren Gilley (except Loverboy which I still haven’t finished – hard work!). Also Motorcycle Man and some of Jo Wylde. But many MCs are just too much, too confronting for me. (or, dare I say it, poorly written?)
I’m a KA fan, but admit some of her books are overly long and tend to drag. But when she’s on her game, can’t beat ’em.
Tessa I really liked Nalini Singh’s first book in that rock series – Rock Addiction. I got hooked with Molly and Fox and loved their story. But sadly, I haven’t enjoyed any of the others in the series as much. I keep readin em but keep feeling let down. None as good as the first one IMO.
Whoops. *Whipspers* Sorry for mentioning the C book.
lol Last time it was mentioned, Ela went off on us. It was awesome. Quite a few of us agree with you about it, I hated the characters, pure hate. And that ending, ugh. Let’s see if we can provoke Ela…
Carnage
Carnage
Carnage
*snickers and run off*
I;m loving Rock Addiction. It’s so sweet, but the angst is coming, right? I can kind of see it.
Pure hate? Whoah. That’s a big call. I haven’t tried the *c* book yet. You’re not convincing me 🙂
Tessa so glad you like Rock Addiction. Yeah, there’s a bit of angst, but not on the scale of (I imagine) books like the c book.
*holds fingers in a cross symbol towards C book*
Did you see Maryse ‘ s new list?
lol
Singh ‘ s books do not really go into high angst that I can think of?
Yeah bev some of them do a bit. Maybe that’s why I didn’t enjoy some of the others in the rock series. Stalkers and stuff. Not usually my thang. It’s OK if the characters are dealing OK with it, but when a character is being overwhelmed by shite circumstances, I can get too drawn in and involved. and then my enjoyment factor in the book starts to disappear.
Amy Gabriel’s Inferno is in third person and the story is told b a narrator, so you may know things the characters don’t.
I’m not a big fan of male POV either, but Fish…yeah ok there! Maybe because it was third person??
Dang Tessa has balls. The C book…HATED!
We’re currently running lights for the haunted trail, so maybe I’ll have some cooler pics soon!
I couldn’t finish Idol (Kristen Callihan) or The Ground Rules either. I so wanted to like them…… what’s wrong with meeeeeeee???????
Absolutely nothing is wrong with you Jan.
Thats the wonderful thing about our group, we all have such different book tastes, even within the same genres.
There are so many books I never would have even attempted with out the recs from these ladies…Written in Red from Bev…Badger from Amy..I could go on and on.
Plus theres no judgy attitudes about our personal tastes… like Tessa’s ‘intense dislike’ for a book we wont mention. Its all ok. We all get it.
Finished Crosstalk. It was different. I need to think about it. The premise and all was fantastic, but… I don’t know. There was no smut. Very little in the romance department to be honest, I mean… You can tell the characters are developing feelings for each other. But there was a major info dump in the first chapter, and it dragged a bit. Yet there was some kind of Inception esque -ish going on. Yeah, I’m a bit torn…
*hugs Lisa again*
Thanks.
BTW, what’s Badger (from Amy?) I think I missed that one.
Oh yeh Grey. The Connie Willises I’ve read aren’t about romance or smut.
Badger is a book I’d usually shove in my Pandora’s Box file and never read. But I put my heart on the line and while it did get slammed with a meat tenderizer this was one of my best books of last year…Floved the ink off that one!!
By McKenna? Hmmm. I wouldn’t read it based on the blurb, but as you say, the recs from this site do turn up hidden gems. I’ll put it in my maybe, when I’m in the mood pile.
I haven’t read a book like this in a while and am so enjoying it. Am I going to finish before our trip tomorrow?
Finished. Yeah, liked that one.
Hmmm, I liked, not loved A Love Letter to Whiskey. It did start off slow when they were in high school together. Did pick up after that and so did the angst level. Maybe 3 stars.
I was going to add that one Cheryl but 3 stars for you and DNF for Amy, I think I’ll skip it.
Ok, here’s my “everyone loved but me” list. (Fabi, let’s see if we are still CR twins)
Hated:
Fallen Crest
Did not like:
Unteachable
Arsen
Fallen too Far
Hollywood Dirt
Paper Princess
Sweet Gum Tree
Jezebel
Kulti
Only ok and was expecting them to be awesome:
Sempre
Hopeless
Edge of Never
Flat out Love
The Edge of Never. Totally agree with you there. Others I expected to be awesome and weren’t for me: Swear on This Life (the most disappointment I’ve ever felt book-wise!), A Thousand Boy Kisses, The Paper Swan, and Kaleidoscope Hearts.
Whoa, Leslie brought the big gones. Lol.
The ones I’ve read on you list I’ve liked some a whole lot.
Sleepy. Stayed up past two reading Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil.
My reading today will be more off and on. And looking at this book I realize I’m never going to catch up to my GR challenge.
I have the pb version of The Bronze Horseman. I’m on page 17. It is 893 pages.
I’m leaving on a jet plane……
Lol Leslie. I’ve only read 3 out of your whole list.
I loved Fallen Crest. That’s where Amy and me line up our tastes. In the YA genre.
Kulti is an all time favorite of mine, it has so much I enjoy reading. I’m a huge soccer fan so that read was a given. I enjoy age gap stories. And I adore sneaky, silly heroines. Yup, Kulti hit many of my buttons.
Hopeless had a great twist. I enjoyed it but had some sad undertones.
I haven’t read any of the others. But I’m still calling you my CR book twin because no one is ever going to agree 100% on every single book they read.
That was supposed to be “snarky” heroines above.
Autocorrect strikes again.
I have decided that Lisa and I are book evil twins. We are complete opposites for the most part. Lol That’s actually kind of awesome. Of the ones I’ve read on that list, only Edge of Never was unloved. And I didn’t get far because I had just finished a travel adventure, and didn’t want to read another. I Love FCH, obviously. Loved Fallen Too Far, Kulti, Sempre Paper Princess, and Hopeless. I really liked Hollywood Dirt and Sweet Gum Tree. So, yep. I just got a whole bunch that went up on the TBR.
Fabi and I are very similar. Jean, Tessa and I are triplets haha.
What’s great about Maryse’s community here is that all of our tastes intersect at one point or another. We can find books in common with every single one of us.
Oh! Finished Rock Addiction. You were all correct. Nothing majorly angry happened but I still loved it. So sweet. Nalini Singh’s paranormal books are angsty though.
But I want a twin, Fabi.
:-/
I’m beginning to think I’m closest to Maryse and Amy but they like the death books. Who else on here likes to get their heart ripped out but then neatly put back together?
Pick one. There’s plenty to choose from. 🙂
Me, me, me!!
Hmmm Grey *taps chin whilst pondering* You have potential. The infrastructure is there, but a few key components are missing…
I suppose I should mention from your book list, not you personally 😀
Wait Grey, I thought Mud Vein didn’t have an HEA??
Oh, oops… I stopped at who likes death books where your heart gets ripped out… Hahah! Love ya R!
Speaking of getting your heart ripped out, does anyone else watch football?
Wow! Can’t believe my life got so terribly busy as soon as I started joining in on the fun here! I had to read 100 posts to get caught up!
Thanks for the info on Patchwhore. I think I’ll skip Clubwhore and give it a try. The book I just read, Four Letter Word (which I really enjoyed–super sexy with a decent amount of angst), is a perfect example of a book that’s in a series of ‘standalones’, however, I would have hated to miss the awesome set-up and banter between the H and h of the next book, Hit the Spot (which is also being advertised as a standalone) if I hadn’t read Four Letter Word first, because they interacted a lot in it. Does that make sense? lol
Since I haven’t read a lot the last year, the only book I can think of that I didn’t love that most others did is Axel.
And from back when I was reading mostly PNR and UF, two extremely popular series that I really tried to get into but was just too bored:
Kate Daniels
Psy-Changelings
Actually, I’ve had a difficult time getting into most anything that Nalini Singh or the Ilona Andrews team have written. I guess their styles are just not my *thing*, and I know I’m waaaay in the minority.
Oh, and I love books that rip out my heart! (think that sounds kind of bad for me to say that! lol)
Nay, some days the chatter on here are fast. Sometimes with conversation on more than one post.
Other days *crickets*
I’m telling you I think Michelle was my closest book twin.
I think Michelle is everyone’s book twin. Her reading is more varied than even mine is.
Dang! No kidding, Fabi! She’s a match for me too!
I know that Maryse used to read a lot of PNR and UF, because that’s one of the reason’s I started following her website, but I don’t see those series discussed much here. Does anyone around here still read them? I ask because in the past couple of days I noticed 2 series that were pretty much ‘ended’ that have a new book releasing and I didn’t know if y’all posted stuff like that???
R most of the books like you’re describing that I’ve read and loved are MM. There are a several that shredded me before healing me.
Yes, I watch football, but I’m a Cowboys fan (of course) unless it comes to Eli Manning, then I’m all “Eli, Eli, …”
R, the Michelle we’re talking about doesn’t have a GR account. You’re thinking of MichelleS. Sometimes we lovingly call them the Michelles
Stephan is already parked in front of the living room TV for that game. I’m outside watching the Browns. So painful. But I have my laptop and a Corona so it’s not all bad!
Oh that’s right! I think she was before me.
R, you and are watching the same game! And my hubby is there. However, since I live just outside of Nashville, my team is the Titans (now that’s painful! lol)
HAHAHA Nay! That’s awesome! I asked my husband yesterday, “how are the Titan’s doing?” He’s like, “does it matter?” Touche.
We SUCK! Every. Single. Year!
S is already waiting for the game? It doesn’t start until almost 3:30pm. :-0
Nay, I have tender feeling for the Titans (formerly the Oilers).
You can take comfort in the fact you will never be worse than the Browns.
He’s freaking out over this one Fabi. All day yesterday. That’s all I heard.
Don’t know about that! We haven’t had a good season since Eddie George played when my son was a toddler–and he’s almost 20 now!
Fabi, I think that’s it. Very varied plus being a fast reader.
R. She has been in occasionally. She is a vet and last time think MichelleS was asking her for her advice on her new puppy.
Nay, lots of uf & pnr fans on here. Just don’t mention the book that shall not be named.
There’s another book that shan’t be named? The only one I know of is the “c” book and it’s contemporary romance.
Oooh, Nashville. One of those places I’d love to visit.
Reminds me, R. Who did your husband see at the festival?
Yes, the ‘c’ book? R. educated me about that after she saw my review and how much I loved it on GR! I will never utter the word! lol
As far as the new books go, I should have checked Maryse’s list first because one of them is already there–it’s a new book in the Hollows series by Kim Harrison, and it’s a prequel to the series.
The other is a UF series that wasn’t quite as popular, but I really enjoyed it–The Scarlett Bernard series my Melissa F. Olson. The new book is Midnight Curse, and it’s listed as a new series, but it looks to me like a continuation of the S. Bernard series (I think M. Olsen likes to write trilogies, so this is the beginning of a new one).
Mmmhmmm.
KMM book. I can’t tell you cause I’m not saying the title. Pfft.
I forgot to add that both of those books are on preorder for a 2/7/17 release.
Oh! I went to Nashville for the first time a couple of years ago and I loved loved loved it! AZ and NV are my favs but TN comes in a close 3rd. Funny that FL is my most visited.
Oh no! KMM? What are the title initial(s)?
ACL? Major Lazer was his favorite, but he also caught Willie Nelson, Radiohead, and I don’t know who else. The lineup wasn’t nearly as attractive (to me) as it usually is.
Tessa I think read and loved the Hallow series. I’ve had a couple them, pb from when first released, and haven’t read them yet. Seriously, how many years now. We’ll first one but I’d need to do a re read.
Willie forever.
Fabi, have you ever had a Maryse spotting?
I listened to all the Hollows books on audiobook and loved them. That’s something else I’ve been meaning to ask–does anyone here do audiobooks? I’m looking for books where the male does ALL the male parts and the female all the female parts, like the KMM series I’m afraid to mention now!
LOL Bev, no I haven’t.
I listen to audio books Nay. But you just have to look at the narrators of each one to see if there’s a team narration.
KMM is Karen Marie Moning?
For me I loved the series up to and including Iced. But then all after have been seriously a disappointment.
Fabi, next time you need binoculars and a lure of something shiny and a martini.
Fabi–yeah, I’ve looked at literally hundreds of them and find many where the male does one chapter and the female does the next, but they still do the opposite gender’s voices within their own chapters. There are a select few where the male does all male and female all female, and they’re so hard to find, I didn’t know if anyone here had listened to any like that.
Oh, and yes, KMM is K. Marie Moning, and I’ve loved all the books in that series, but I really, really love Barrons and the story behind him and his crew.
I’ve never listened to an audio book. I think if I did it would have to be male POV and the voice would need to be smoking hot. Suanne just posted that the Fish Tales is getting audio and that could potentially be the single greatest thing that’s ever happened to me.
R. *raises hand* me, me, me!! I don’t mind heart ripped out as long as you give me the HEA!
Cannot find a book that captures my attention. Guess I can go do something productive- like yard work or a run. 😉
I know what you mean Nay. I run across them every now and then but they are few and far between. It has to be a “production”.
R. I prefer male narrators. I like listening to the lower register of the voice. Some of the women narrators have really high pitched tones. But, it’s hard to find good male narrators in the romance genre.
Nay, I’ve loved every KMM book I’ve read. No exceptions.
*raises hand* Huge PNR reader here. I adore the Kate Daniel’s series. OMG one of my faves! Psychic Changeling is okay, but the Guild Hunter series by Nalini Singh makes me swoon. Elena and Raphael… *sigh* Nov 1 is the next Archangel book! *squee*
KMM Burned. Burned. Burned. *grins impishly* Everyone knows I’m the odd one who has loved Burned and Feverborn. I’m okay with that.
I did see the new Hollows. I’ll probably still get it even though the series ended perfectly to me. I started reading those when they first came out. I’ve e only read one Scarlett Bernard book so far. I need to finish the series. *looks at her TBR. sees all the uncompleted PNR series. Sighs* I’ll get to it. Really!
Fabi… Feverborn?
Oh and football. Nope. I love playing sports, but not watching them. I despise watching sports unless it’s ice skating, diving, gymnastics, or skiing.
Cheryl! And you’ve read all my faves! Aside from Maryse, you might be the only one!
I only like football and only the Browns. And the Longhorns, but now that most of the games air on the Longhorn Network (which I can’t get) I can’t even watch my local team!
Oh and how is this for perfect book time. It’s pouring outside and the power is out in the area. Yeah rain!
Yes Tessa, all of them. You’re not the only one. 🙂
Fabi and Tessa–I’ve loved all the Fever books too–no exceptions here either. I’ve especially loved the last 3, but I’ve seen why many haven’t like one or all of them and I get it. It’s just my kind of writing–I love most anything fae with romance.
Tessa, I just went and looked at my review of Feverborn. Yes, it was my least favorite of the series.
“It’s tough when expectations for an author are so high. It is my least favorite of the series, but I wonder if I wouldn’t have rated it higher if I hadn’t been expecting another knock my socks off grand adventure from KMM.”
But if I compare it with other PNR books, it still stands high and proud. It’s only when compared to other KMM works that I was a little disappointed. Also, the change in narrator was a decided influence on my enjoyment of the story.
Fabi–I also struggled with the change in narration, and I’m sure I’ll struggle with the next one, but I thought he did a great job. He had some huge shoes to fill!
Ooh. That’s right. She had to have a new narrator. Makes me glad I don’t listen. (for once. Usually I’m jealous you all can. Lol)
So 3 people who liked Burned and Feverborn. Yeah!
Yeah, she had to change that narrator.
I know there are probably a ton of these, but can anyone recommend a really good, angsty new-ish (maybe published in the last 6 months) cont. romance, NA or erotic romance love triangle book?
I find that I’m inundated with book ideas right now of all genres, but I’d really like to read a love triangle book and I don’t think any of the ones I’ve been trying to decide among have that.
One True Loves Nay!!!
R–Oooh, I have that! I bought a bunch of books when I was in the hospital in April and after I first got out and I have only started one of them but just wasn’t in the mood for it. I had forgotten about OTL! Thx!
I’ll take more suggestions as well if anyone has them. I’ll have a lot of time on my hands sitting at the doctor’s office tomorrow between my 6 appointments/procedures.
It’s one of my all time favorites. It gave me one of the worst book hangovers I’ve ever had 😀
Ok, starting it now!
Yay! Sending wine and chocolate and this: https://www.amazon.com/Kleenex-Facial-03076-Convenience-Tissues/dp/B00SGQCCDI/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1476648159&sr=8-1&keywords=bulk+kleenex
Oh no! I guess that should tell me something! bwahaha
Nah! Don’t be scared!
I stopped with Shadowfever after I saw the reactions to subsequent books, I LOVED the Fever series up to that point. Honestly? I am happy to leave it with how things ended in SF, just like I’m happy to leave things how they ended in The Ground Rules.
I love and value all the feedback you lovely ladies share here. 😀
You know sometimes my book disappointment is more about my mood when reading it, rather than actual book. I do much better when I know what to expect. (Which is why I read spoilers sometimes) When I read Jezebel I wasn’t expecting “you know what” and THAT is just not my type of story. Plus I do get bored easy, so slow burn books like Kulti are tough for me to get through. I also have hard time with “twisty” books….I often feel twist is silly or predictable.
Are any of you guys “mood” readers??
Amy, are you only reading first book in Ground Rules series???
Watch…I’ll read all 3 and probably end up loving them since everyone else was disappointed. Hee hee
Leslie, I loved The Ground Rules, number 1 and 2… Did NOT like 3 however.
Nay, have you read Playing with Monsters? That was a 5 star erotic Pnr for me in July, Tessa and I both loved it.
Whoah. You guys have been chatty while I’ve been asleep 🙂 Yeah Leslie, I’m a bit of a mood reader too. I’ve been impatient with some books and dnf then a few months later gone back to see what all the fuss was about and sometimes liked them the second time around. I’ve occasionally gone back and changed a star rating or review on that basis too.
Amy…same. I actually read Iced too…which I didn’t care for as much as the Fever series… So I haven’t read the followups yet.
I do that too Jean. If a book stays on my mind, even if I initially had major issues with it, I tend to change the rating too. It usually only goes up though.
Jan, funny as I have done a reread and ended up loving the book. That happened to me with Beautiful Disaster. I didn’t really like it the first time. I wasn’t expecting characters to be so immature…but then I read it again and of course loved it.
Yeah, IKWYM Leslie.
I have to defend Kulti – one of my current fav books. Slow burn, yeah, but I just floved the characters. When they finally get their hea it’s all the sweeter for the long buildup. I really liked Hollywood Dirt too. Am intrigued it’s going to be a movie. So much will depend on the casting 😉
I agree on KMM – loved the first few, but the series seriously went off (in a bad way) and I’ve totally lost interest. Same with psy-changeling. Floved some of the earlier books (Kiss of Snow! Yay!) but am totally sick of it now. The last few have been boring.
Or what about when you read a book and think you love it but then begin to wonder? I lent my copy of The Time Traveler’s Wife to a friend and when we met up to discuss it I’d somehow blocked out all the questionable plot choices. MAJOR plot points, I couldn’t even remember! Things I would not have liked! But I remember the book as 5 plus stars!!
I do that with re-reads. I think they are awesome then go back and realize stuff doesnt make sense or took a weird turn.
Yeah. It’s disappointing when a book you sloved seems flat the next time around.
Eeek. Sorry, floved, not sloved. (What’s sloved?)
LMAO!! I JUST figured out floved! I’m all sloved??? What the heck is that!??
Leslie…I probably won’t read books 2 and 3 of TGR (even though I clicked book 2 a while ago when it was on sale).
My thing is…I already didn’t care for Gabe in book 1, but not knowing the specifics of what went on between him and Bridget helped me deal a little better (only slightly though) with my issues of the H sleeping with someone else. Yes, I knew what I was getting into, but still. Anyways, I’m worried that I’ll learn things in book 2 about those two which will make me HATE him, and I would just rather leave well enough alone. Besides, I wasn’t too thrilled with Weston and the way he handled things by the end of TGR.
I’m definitely guilty of upping my rating later on when all I can remember is the good and not what irritated me about a book enough to give it a lower rating in the first place.
Maybe that’s a good thing though when a book does that to me?
I loved The Time Travelers Wife.
Kulti too. But I really enjoy a slow slow burn.
Ok I’m only on page 50, but buddies better be reading.
There are few in my hate file because I’ll usually dnf if it’s not working for me for whatever reason. So, I end up with very few I’ve read all the way through and can honestly say I hated. The Time Travelers Wife is one of them. :+|
I don’t think I’ve ever gone back and re-rated a book. I rate them immediately as I finish reading so whatever I’m feeling at that moment is what I rate it.
I loved it, but I think the parts that didn’t carry to the move were for a reason and those are the parts I conveniently forgot! I did see the movie first, so I wonder if that has something to do with it. Eric Bana is just yum!!
Fabi that clever little face emoticon you did up there is super cute!
*movie
Bev, I’ve been busy with hubs & son (stupid family expects to eat when I’d rather be reading!!) but will be reading tonight!!
Which reminds me…my son gave me the funniest thing last mothers day. It’s a magnet with pic of woman in kitchen and says “Didn’t I just cook for these a$$holes yesterday”?? Ha ha ha
Thanks Jan. It’s supposed to be a scrunchy nose. lol I just made it up.
Wow! Had to charge my Kindle so I decided to continue my GR catch-up (I’ve got about 2 years worth of books to mark/review AND something happened to my account about 3 years ago and it marked about 2,000 of the books that I had marked “want to read” as ‘read’, so I’ve got all these books sitting there with ‘read’ on them, many of them that I have no intention of EVER reading. And their batch editing function isn’t very speedy, so I’m having to delete/change a few at a time and it’s taking for-e-ver!)
Grey! OMG Playing with Monsters is Amelia Hutchins? I had no idea she had a new series, and I FLOVE the Fae Chronicles! Getting it!! Thanks!!!
Nay, it’s a spinoff from Fae Chronicles, but OMG the insanity. It was so beyond good.
Oh man! I haven’t finishing Seducing Destiny yet (I think I’m at about 65%)! I got sick(er) during the time that I was reading it and that’s about the time my reading hiatus started. Do I need to finish SD first? (I’m a stickler for reading things in order if necessary). I want to finish SD, but Playing with Monsters just sounds so good that I want to start it NOW!
Bev…I’m starting TBH tonight, I just have to finish the one I got sucked into by accident. I only meant to find something to pass the time yesterday but I’m hooked now. It’s a student-teacher read but with a twist because she is 16 and taking college classes (he is her teacher) but lets him believe she is 18 or 19, and it’s been pretty ominous so far. I feel kinda sick for him right now. 😕
Fae Chronicles…that was with Ryder, right? *swooooooon*
Although her calling him a “f**king fairy!” was pretty dang hilarious. 😉
Yup, Amy. That’s it!
What is it, Amy??
I don’t know if the character was introduced in that one or not, but probably safer to read SD before PwM.
Crap! Guess I’ll be buzzing through it tonight. I REALLY want to start PwM! lol
I only read the first three KMM books. Couldn’t get interested in others.
When and if I rate a book, I do not go back and change it.
Nay…it’s The Truth About You and Me by Amanda Grace.
It’s written as a letter of sorts from her to him after the fact, hence the ominous feels. We know he’s in trouble (not a spoiler, we find out right away) but I don’t know the extent of the repercussions yet or if there will be an epilogue with an HEA or what.
I’m thinking the 4th one, Dreamfever, was my fave. If it’s the one I’m thinking of, it’s definitely the hottest!
So, I talked with Maryse and she told me to post my entire review here… So without further adieu, My Goodreads review of Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas, which drops on October 21st (this upcoming Friday!
This book took my feels for the Fall Away series, Corrupt and Misconduct threw them in the Kitchen-Aid and turned that sucker on. You’re going to read a million reviews of what this story is about, plus I’m not a spoiler queen, so I’m not going to waste your time recapping the story for you. Read the book! I’m just going to tell you that Penelope Douglas doesn’t pull any punches.
She writes an eighteen year old female MC, Ryen, that you don’t necessarily like at times…although you will feel her turmoil and inner conflict. And the eighteen year old male MC, Misha, that’s a jerk, bully, mc-assface… but hot AF! (Aren’t they always?) Add some secrets and lies of omission… and some bald-faced lies too, and bada bing, you’ve got Punk 57!
What some of these reviews may not tell you, is how pertinent this story is to today’s youth…and how I almost wish it didn’t have sex in it…
Wait! Before you start throwing tomatoes (or other not-so-soft items) at me! (I know, I can’t believe I typed it either…) Let me explain, I have a 14 year old daughter, who is a cheerleader and God, I hope she isn’t a b!tch like Ryen is at times. But I almost wish, I could hand her this book and tell her – Read this and “hang on, you’ll find your tribe.”
The social and emotional ramifications of being a young person in today’s society are so overwhelming. The pressures, teenagers face – I, for one, would not want to do it all over it again, especially in today’s technologically advanced culture. The bullying, cell phones, Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, WhatsApp, Quotev, all of the various Messengering options… it’s unreal what some kids have access to. And most parents, like those in this story, have NO idea what their kids are *really*up to.
Yet, I don’t want to delete the smut… because it is Pen Douglas smut, and that sh#t is legendary. If not, it should be. She’s just got a way… and the characters in her book, they certainly had *their* way too. Humina, humina! This book is not safe to read at work, btw…. Um. Yeah. LOL!
I *felt* this book. It hurt in places. I had to get a cold glass of water in other sections. In yet different parts, I read with my eyes kind of squinted a little, because I knew the inevitable crash was coming… “Close your eyes, there’s nothing to see out here.” Gah! That made me tear up!
I love that she includes a playlist right off the bat, so I can upload that sucker onto Spotify and completely submerge myself into the Punk 57 experience while I am reading. I also appreciate the fact that I was lucky enough to receive an advanced copy of this e-book in exchange for an honest review, so thank you for that and again, for the Playlist too.
If you’ve never read one of her books before this is a great one to start on. It is a standalone, although it does briefly mention a couple of the characters from Corrupt. I give this book, 4.5 spray-painted-on-the-wall stars!
Popping in real fast just to say, have you guys seen?????! The Big Little Lies trailer is out! I’ve been dying to see this and have been wondering when the release was! I’m not sure I love the trailer, BUT I’m still gonna watch the show cuz that book was one of my all time faves! Plus I love the actors! 😉
Oh Grey that sounds so good!!
Um, forgot this https://www.ew.com/article/2016/10/16/big-little-lies-trailer 😛
*tries desperately to squash envy*
Tuesday. I will have it on Tuesday. Great review Grey and Corrupt people in it? You now need a clean version for your daughter. 😀
Loved your review, Grey. Not sure whether I want to go there, though. I like to *like* my h and H. I’ll download a sample on my kindle and make up my mind after that.
Jean, I think I figured out why GR is auto-updating your books. When you finish reading them, it you star or review and submit to Amazon it now automatically also goes to GR.
I HATE this new feature.
Nay! Buy Playing with Monsters. It’s on sale right now.
Got it! Thanks!
Grey- what a great review! I *usually* don’t like to read books where MC’s are in high school-but I’ll definitely take a look at Punk 57. 🙂
I’m still thinking about the characters in Tell the Truth Shame the Devil.
I have nor read alot of Horseman. Won’t be able to get back to it until this evening.
Tasha…I loved Big Little Lies, but I’m with you about the trailer. It just doesn’t look promising. *sigh* I just don’t know if the quirky, darkly humorous vibe of the book (which is what I loved about it) will be translated well into the show.
Add to that my dislike of Nicole Kidman and Reese Witherspoon… 😕
GASP…how did I pass over A Love Letter To Whiskey? Mine Mine Mine Mine Mine!!! Okay, I own it now…phew!! I’m already angst-ridden and have only read the blurb.
Nay, I was reading back through this thread – if you can handle really erotic MMMF triangles (actually, I think that’s a quadrangle), there is a 3 book series I recently read – Curing Doctor Vincent, Surviving Doctor Vincent and Loving Doctor Vincent by Renea Mason. He (the doctor) is unable to have sex with a woman for a particular reason (which you later learn), but he finds the girl and wants her. He enlists the help of his two super duper sexy hot-damn alpha best friends to help him “love” her. You kind of have to have an open mind about polyamorous relationships…but it’s hot hot hot!!! I floved it, and it opened up a whole new genre to me!!!
Missed you guys all weekend! There are just too many comments for me to catch up!
Yes Fabi, I hate that feature too! It’s making me crazy!
Great review Grey! I definitely want to read that one even though I don’t always go for the high school age.
So, here’s the big question……is everyone buddy reading Bronze Horseman? I got a little sidetracked by Pull Me Close which I just finished and loved! So, am I starting TBH or something off my TBR list of 1200? (bev is going to kill me)
Thoughtless just arrived at my door! I’m so excited!! It’s so big too! As in long. As in thick. Get your heads out of the gutter!
*tackle-hugs Jean*
I’m starting Black Swan Affair because it is just too tempting, so maybe TBH after that.
“It’s so big too! As in long. As in thick.” <—– That's our Kellan!!
Get my head out of the gutter…hehe, you're funny. *snort*
Lol Amy! Yep, Black Swan Affair is calling my name! And after I saw your comment about the Whiskey book, I refrained from 1-clicking it!
R, I AM SO JEALOUS YOU GET TO READ THOUGHTLESS FOR THE FIRST TIME! THAT BOOK GAVE ME SERIOUS STOMACH ISSUES (AND I LOVED IT)! Haven’t found a book that comes close to it yet!
I know!! I can’t believe I waited so long! I’m planning on following it with Rainfall too!
Ahhhh Rainfall…..that is a classic around here! I hope you love both books?
Hey, did anyone ever read the short novella to Rainfall? I haven’t and was just curious……
Reading Thoughtless and Rainfall for the first time.
*sigh*
I need some kind of green martini to match my mood. 😛
I’m dying to read and I have nine pin bowling tonight!! I think I’ll be drinking my weight in diet coke so I can stay up super late and finish Hausfrau.
R. After Thoughtless you read the rest of the series,. Then Rainfall.
So, my new Kindle is broken. Thankfully, it’s not even 3 months old so it’s still under warranty. Also, thankfully, I still have my tablet, and the Kindle will be replaced in a week.
Amy, Black Swan Affair is calling my name too!!
To read Thoughtless (and yes you need to read the entire series R.) for the first time! *sigh*
Are all the books in the Thoughtless series as good as the first? I’ll be reading them until Christmas! And $$$$ dang! I swear when I bought it the other day the Kindle version was almost as much as the paperback. Of course now it’s 1.99! But the rest are high and if I’m going to get one in PB, I may as well get them all. I’ll probably have to squeeze in Rainfall though! Maybe I should do that one first…
I’m starting Black Swan Affair tonight (sorry bev, I jumped off the bandwagon again)!
R…I enjoyed the last two books in the Thoughtless series, but book 1 was my absolute favorite. The other two have nothing on the first angst-wise, at least for me. Don’t get me wrong, there is plenty of tummy twisting in books 2 and 3 (and they are great and definitely worth reading!) but book 1 is in a class all its own as far as the mess it made out of me. 😉
*whisper yells* Yay Jean!!!
*peeks around for bev*
I loved two and three. Though not as a angsty, still angst and worry. Three omg, it went insane. Remember?
Do 2 and 3 have the same MCs or do they follow new couples? And what’s up with the 2 standalones?
Same couple all the way through the first three. Four is Thoughtless from Kellan’s pov. 5 is another character’s story.
The first three are all Kellan and Kiera R. Then Thoughtful is Kellans POV of the same story. Then the last one us about his bandmate Griffin.
I read these not knowing much about tgem or how gut twisty they were and survived. There is certainly plenty of tension! The h isnt my favorite character ever but Kellan. OMG.
I’m hearing all kinds of Kellan awesomeness!!
