- Give Me Love by Kate McCarthy <— Jeannie LOVED it!!!
“I just finished Give Me Love by Kate McCarthy and LOVED it! It’s definitely for fans of Kristen Ashley and the first in a series. It’s funny and angsty – a rock band with Evie as the lead singer meets the brother of her best friend/manager and has an instant connection. He’s in security and, of course, very hot. She takes one look at him and runs far and spends all her time trying to avoid him. It was a lot of fun and I couldn’t put it down. Right now, it’s also free on Amazon!”
- Imitation series by Heather Hildenbrand <— My sister went crazy for this one! “Aaaaarrrgghhh… I have TONS of things to do, some important even… but I cannot stop reading that last book of The Imitation Series by Heather Hildenbrand. Book two was read in two days ONLY because I had rendez vous I had to attend to. Definitively a great series for me.” and then… “Finished the entire series last night ! What a GREAT one !”
- Not The One (Lost in London Book 1) by Amy Daws <— HER BEST FRIEND DIED… and she has someone that helps but… “We’re absolute poison for each other. We’re a stifling, suffocating, sickness of darkness. But I feel safe…because I’ve made an art of pushing people away. Now he’s pushing back…” And it’s super-bargain priced today!! P.S. Book #2 was just released! That One Moment (Lost in London Book 2)
- Wrong by Jana Aston <— This is #1 (but #2 – Right – was just recently released) and BOTH are much-loved in our crew!
DG: Jana Aston is batting a 2-0 in my book! A hot alpha *sighs deeply*, a goofy h, a little love, a little drama, a little stubbornness and a whole lot of lovin. A great and easy feel good read!
Lisa: DG I’m with you. I loved Right….and Wrong. Great unputdownable perfect fluff for me.
- The Bad Ones by Stylo Fantome <— SUPER-DARK AND BLOWING MINDS ALERT! So it’s back on the list. 😉
Jean: I’m still reading Bad Ones. It seriously is like a train wreck that you can’t look away from and I need to get to the end for that shell shocker!
Ela: The Bad Ones *full body shiver*….eeeep I still can’t get some of those images out of my mind!!!!!
DG: I was in book shock over the Bad Ones… Tessa and Ela – glad it wasn’t just me. Not sure what category to list it in….
Cristina: I finished the Bad Ones Last night. I can see this categorized as a psych/horror book. Definitely dark… like abyss dark. If you want to know what happens when two sociopaths find one another, this is your story.
- My Commander (Bewitched and Bewildered Book 1) by Alanea Alder <— This one’s making Michelle LAUGH HARD!! And by what she just told us, I’m already giggling!!! 😛
Michelle: Omigod I’m laughing so hard that I’m crying! Laura recommended My Commander by Alanea Alder and it’s freakin hilarious! I wish it had audio so I could listen on my drive. On the tampon scene…five paranormal alpha males trying to figure out what a period is and what tampons to get *giggling*
- The Passage: A Novel (Book One of The Passage Trilogy) by Justin Cronin <— A VAMPY VERSION OF THE WALKING DEAD ALERT!! Lisa & Jan130 LOVE it!
Lisa: The Passage is the most amazing book. It will be made into a movie (Im pretty sure I read that movie rights had been purchased). Fabi you must read it….you wont forget it. Its like the vampy version of The Walking Dead. Huge and awesome!! … The Passage might fall into a horror category in some respects (as Jan130 mentioned its not Stephen King style horror at all) but I would describe as an apocalyptic world building epic. The vampires are NOT Twilight or BDB hotties but a new species of predator. But it has elements we love….like an awesome kicking asses and taking no prisoners heroine in Alicia. And characters so well developed you’ll miss them. Its a tale of survival. I loved it.Jan130: BTW if you haven’t read The Passage, it’s fabulous. A bit sci-fi, a bit vampirey, a bit dystopia end-of-the-world Stephen King’s The Stand style. Fantastic book. …Yeh, The Passage is epic. It’s a huge read, so be warned!. Starts off pretty conventional sci-fi thriller but you’ve gotta stick with it. It just takes off and carries you along with it. Loved this book. *Something is coming* (said in a whisper….. Oh yeh!

It’s an Amazon feature, that scans your Kindle books and will list all of the ones you have that are also available as an audiobook at a discounted price (not normal audiobook prices). This way, you can switch back and forth, seamlessly between your ebooks and your audiobooks. VERY COOL! (This is the “Whispersync” thingie).

I remember Ash! That one is proof of too many books. I really liked it, and thought it was so different. Thanks for the reminder! Now gonna look up the second book.
YAY!!! Glad I could help. That one got my attention too. What a blurb!
Oooh the second, anarchy, is up for pre-order. Mine!
I got the book originally due to who the author is. I love the Supernatural Prison series and was intrigued by another story from her.
I CANNOT wait for Bounty. I have been going through some serious KA withdrawals. I’ve been rereading all of her books to get my fix. Just finished my third read of Motorcycle Man.
Yep, my head is still spinning from The Bad Ones! I went back to my Sinners…..Wicked Beat, Eric’s story….what a sweetheart!
Maryse, did you finish Cocky Bastard? Can’t wait to read your review!
I’m continuing on my dark theme kick…although after The Bad Ones I was sure I’d be crying and reading cartoons but nope…Just finished This is War, Baby and sequel This is Love, Baby and NOW onto the Black Lotus series be EK Blair…
Stephanie, those are some of my favorites to reread too.
I think I’m gonna try The Bad Ones….I mean, Stylo Fantome created Jameson Kane (sigh), so I’m pretty sure anything she writes will be incredible. Ahhhhh, Jameson Kane…..
I loved The Kane series too Lauren and yes Jameson, sigh…. But be warned, The Bad Ones is NOTHING like the Kane series!
Yikes! I just went back to the blurb & read the bottom, “this book contains graphic sex, extremely brutal violence, foul language, and people repeatedly and knowingly breaking the law”. Now I’m scared. Jean, give me some more info….is it a captor/captive type book or a wealthy deviant like guy (like Jameson Kane)? Is it even a romance? They don’t give a lot of information.
It’s more like a Bonnie and Clyde type book. These two are bad and a lot psychotic! Lol! They thrive on violence! Someone here said, if you want to see what happens when two psychotic people get together, this book is for you! Even as crazy as it was, I liked it and it won’t be forgotten anytime soon because it’s such a unique story.
LISTEN TO JEAN! AND IF YOU WANT NIGHTMARES AND LOVE DEATH THEN ENJOY!
It’s really more of a Natural Born Killers type book.
Virgin Romance Novelist was so good. I’m trying to read one I was anticipating, Honour bound, but my mind just wants more Rosie. I’m thinking I might by the randy romance novelist. lol
Yes Tessa, Natural Born Killers. I couldn’t think of it!
Good to hear that about VRN!
I read The Passage just a few weeks ago. It was a good book, but a strange one. I have to say that it is unlike any dystopian book that I have read before. Just think military experiments gone wrong…. very wrong.
Such a slow reading week. Finally finished Once Upon a Rose. Which I really liked. Great meet cute that I re-read a few times.
Not sure what I’m reading next. Maybe Cocky Bastard, or one of 40 others on my short list.
Been one of those days. Not horrible just……one of those. So thinking I want some take out, some chocolate, and a good book. Or show. Hmm.
Maryse, what is on your tbr?
YA has been catching my attention lately. Just hitting that spot you know? Saw this list, have read 14 of them. A few of them pretty recently.
https://bookriot.com/2016/04/11/95411/
Huh. I’ve only read six and want to read two. Though it was enough to request Shatter Me from the library. I keep meaning to read that. That and Clockwork Angels. I don’t know why I keep putting that one off.
I’m reading Thin Love by Eden Butler which is currently 99 cents bargain. I’m halfway through and I’m hooked. The angst and build up is driving me nuts.
Tessa, I tried Shatter Me but did not get that far into it. If you read it and like it I might give it another go.
Yeah, there are some on there I want to read or new to me I want to look up.
bev I have no clue what’s up for my weekend… I think I need to go psych-thriller or even horror of some sort. I need something totally different.
Well, Bad Ones was a psych-horror… :-P. Honestly i just don’t like psych horror so my opinion on it shouldn’t really apply.
Sooooooo many great books, but seriously can not wait until Dirty, by Kylie Scott 🙂
I’ve seen buzz for The Widow. I have in my tbr The Walls Around Us & Tiny Pretty Thing, that maybe fit in ? But YA and not sure.
Well, I finally finished reading/editing the first draft of Katie Delahanty’s book, and I am sooo ready to read for me. Now what to read…
YEEEEEEEES First and First this monday! I just love his writing so much.
Oh Molly, you just can’t imagine how anxiously I’ve been waiting for Santino Hassell to release that one. I thought I was being my usual (relatively) patient self – until I started seeing the ARC reviews. Then, I freaked.
We could have at least gotten a Friday release. A Monday release sucks because it means that either Tuesday or Wednesday I’ll have to go to work sleepless.
Maybe I should just read Santino. I like him. And I haven’t even read him yet, but I follow him on Twitter and Facebook and I just really like him.
Cheryl, I feel your pain. That’s why I ratcheted back on my beta reads this year. Last year I barely managed to read 150 books while the year before I’d read 250. Some of that was work related, but I think a lot of it was beta reading. In your case, with an alpha read, that’s even more time consuming.
I’m limiting myself to no more than 6 beta reads this year. While I’m happy, even thrilled, to read ARCs, betas have to take a back seat to my favorite hobby of reading for pleasure.
My friends… I’m still taste-testing books. I tried two last night… *sigh*
I agreed to beta read 19 pages for someone a while back. 19 pages and it took me 8 hours.
I decided to pick up My Commander after reading that the 5 hot alpha males buying tampons scene was hilarious. I better get to this scene quick. I am losing interest. Everything is just to easy & neat, you know? That insta-love in 2 seconds flat. I’m at 31%. Started looking up homemade dog food recipes on Pinterest. That’s a bad sign. Need something to keep my attention!!
lol MichelleS, maybe you can just skip to that scene.
Right R? It is so time consuming. I love helping out but I don’t want all my free time tied up. I won’t read partials because of my issue with cliffhangers so it’s usually a 2 week+ commitment for each beta. Considering I average 4 escape books a week, that’s a lot of down time I’m investing. I still want to help. I just needed to add a little balance instead of taking it on like another job.
How is the new puppy MichelleS?
I won’t agree to it unless the writer has a detailed rated list on GR and preferably a writing sample on Amazon. Then I’ll only commit to 1 chapter. Even with all that, I still end up with stuff I can barely get through. 95% of the problems I see can be avoided if the writer would just READ what they have before they decide to get a beta. It’s a pet peeve LOL.
And don’t get me started on writers who go on GR forums to complain about disappearing betas. They disappear for a reason. If I have wine, I have to hide my mouse to keep from going online and giving them the what for! 🙂
What do you do as a beta? Is it just for grammar? Or can you tell them not to use the word smirk so often? And to show not tell?
It depends on the writer what they want, but I do all of the above. I will usually turn down a project if they don’t want me to comment on spelling/grammar because they’re the ones who usually have the most mistakes and I don’t want my name attached to it! Some just want you to read it like you’re reading an ARC and give your opinion – kind of like a pre-review.
LOL R. You’re scary. hahaha
I have to admit that out of the dozen plus I read last year there were a few (3 maybe?) that were awesome. I remember on one of them writing the author to ask if the book was really a beta. On another, I just kept gushing so I don’t know how helpful I really was. lol But, yeah, the majority of them felt like alpha reads – a lot of work still needed.
I’ve read about 15 so far. Never Stop Falling was hands down my favorite and I loved it so much I started staking the author lol. Just kidding, she’s cool. I’m reading Yes, Mr. Van Der Wells right now, another one I did and it’s a bit naughty lol, but hilarious. Then there are 2 that are not out yet. One is a YA fantasy, and the other is Erotic Romance by that guy I mentioned the other day. The other 11? Not easy.
Fabi, I know! maybe i am “sick” on monday. Haha
All of the above Bev. Although some are not looking for copyediting at that point and just want feedback on plot flow, transitions, timelines, character development, things like that.
I’m OCD about grammar, so it’s hard for me not to flag incorrect use of words or typos or missing words…but if they specifically ask me not to then of course I don’t. I love the ones that have a specific set of questions they want answered. For example:
1. Did the heroine’s fears feel authentic and did overcoming them build into the strength needed for … whatever the plot is.
2. Does the transition between the view of the past and the present make sense? Does it flow?
3. Please flag any passive voice sentences.
Etc.
A very few authors know exactly what they need from beta readers. It generally makes beta reading easier. Most of them just say here’s my book what do you think. Yes, in a run on sentence just like that one. 😉 Many of them only submit a chapter or two at a time. But I don’t read those. I only beta complete books. I think it makes what I receive a little more ‘complete’ or ‘revised’ maybe.
OMG those questions LOL!! That’s for your editor…
If your looking for a psych-thriller than you should give Black Widow by Lauren Runow a try. It is romantic Suspense, Erotica, Murder Mystery, Broken Souls, and best of all only 99 cents right now.
Waahhh Molly. I can’t take any time off next week and I doubt I’ll have any reading time at the office either. 🙁
Come back and comment as you’re reading it ok? It’ll be like a buddy read with you. 🙂
R. I would hazard to say some of these writers (indie authors) don’t have editors yet.
If your looking for a psych-thriller than you should give Black Widow by Lauren Runow a try. It is so much more then that though, and best of all only 99 cents right now.
If they’re going to self pub, it’s their job to get one. I’m making my family eat ramen so I can get one. OK, not really. But we are skipping summer vacay and I cut my weekly wine selection by half! (God, that almost makes it not worth it)…
haaaaa you crack me up
Bev – my puppy is so cute I could just eat him up! Finished his first manners class, and on to second. He prances around like a show dog. Havanese really have the best little walk ever. He’s in my lap right now. Velcro dog! he’s a stinker, too, but this is the best little dog breed ever! (I may be a little dog obsessed right now).
I think I am going to get back to my TBR. Maybe read the tampon scene and then dive into something else. I wish I could just read The Last Hour of Gann for the first time all over again.
My friend just read the Nightingale and wants me to read it too. Maybe go in that direction? UGH. Have no clue right now. I guess I will check out Pinterest!
Fabi and R it was time consuming. The author did have some specific questions throughout the read, but otherwise I could comment and edit away. The most frustrating part was the Mori app I used to do this. It could have been my older ipad, but overall it lagged when making edits, no easy way to scroll back or forward and sometimes would jump you to a previous page or quit unexpectedly when you tried to add a comment. Ugh, horrible.
Think I’m going with Right by Jana Aston. Need something lighthearted and funny.
Yay Fabi! Haha I am going to embarrrass myself fangirling all over the comments
MichelleS – Nightingale. OMG. Projectile snot ugly cry. Take my advice and don’t read it in public… Might be my favorite book of all time. Oddly, it was one of the first recommendations I got from this site and I just assumed it was a romance LOL. I kept thinking…this isn’t very romantic!! When I finally figured it out, WOW.
Cheryl – I haven’t tried it on my phone. I sit at my laptop with Word Track Changes open. That’s what takes so long! I can’t even do it from bed or a bubble bath!
Aww MichelleS sorry it’s not working for ya 🙁 I thought Meryn was so endearing and funny. It’s definitely a fluffy read but I’m reading book 2 already so that must have been what I needed! Also Havanese are wonderful little dogs, which I even enjoy, despite being more of a big dog person.
His “first manners class” that’s so sweet.
MichelleS, I have to channel Bev here … Hominids! If you can fall in love with a lizard man, you can will fall in love with a Neanderthal. I promise.
Molly! *grabs Molly’s hands and jumps up and down twirling in a circle* Did you hear he might be at RT next year?! If he confirms it, I’m GOING!!! Just to fangirl and stare at him unceasingly. (ok, so he won’t go if he reads that – but I promise to be discreet-ish)
Whaaaaaat!!!??? Thats AMAZING! Now i want to go too (and stare haha) I have been a fan since the beginning – like 2007 something!
Oh, well, I’m a newbie compared to that. I’d never read an mm book in 2007. I can’t believe how shy he is. (or seems to be) His talent is undisputable.
I agree! He writes the freakin best character delvelopment in his stories. He has a writing gift.
Unseen Messages by Pepper Winters is now free on Kindle Unlimited! Yeah. My next read!!
Reading The Virgin Romance Novelist right now and it’s hilarious! These messes she gets herself in are ridiculously funny, had my hand over my mouth last night trying really hard not to wake anyone. Lol. I read Give Me Love by Kate McCarthy also a long time ago but I absolutely loved it. It’s one that stayed with me and I can still remember everything that happened. Rock star romance except she’s the star. Great relationships with all the side characters too and loved the hero and heroine. I remember watching it for a while after hoping there were more books to follow with other characters.
Well if we are channeling bev…..Maryse, you know what might psych you out?
Tee hee!! Er… ummm… Sherlock? 😛
Finished Dannika Dark’s newest yesterday: One Second. It’s the 7th (and final) book in her Seven series (wolf shifters) and I loved it. Very dramatic and exciting, plus there was a big focus on Austin and Lexie’s relationship. (Austin is YUM). I smiled and cried. Maybe the best book out of this series. Not recommended as a standalone, read though – the other books really should be read first. At the end, Ms Dark hints she will do more writing set in this world. Looking’ forward to it, Ms Dark!
Now … tomorrow there’s Dirty, then Tuesday it’s Bounty. Oh, what a week! 🙂 BTW, in Australia we’re on the other side of the international dateline so it’s already Sunday 17th here. Hee hee.
Jan, I’m still listening to Seven Years, the first one in that series. I’m loving it. Nicole Poole is a fantastic narrator.
Michelle S you have me intrigued now about The Last Hour of Gann. Never heard of it before. I see one reviewer likened it to Ursula LeGuin, one of my favourite authors. I’m going to try it. Ah, I love this list ……
Have you read Grass by Sheri S. Tepper? Awesome, intriguing, mysterious, well-written, moving sci-fi. I don’t love all of Ms Tepper’s books. Some a bit too proselytising. But this outstanding book is surely her best. A classic. You might like it. Just saying’……
Fabi, it’s well worth sticking with the seven series. It’s a bit uneven – some books better than others. But overall really good. You get to know all of the characters and their interesting quirks. I forgot to say, can be very funny, too. I had some lol moments in One Second.
Yes, I’m already intrigued by all the brothers. And since its a complete series, there’s more chance I’ll finish it.
It’s a unique spin on the shifter trope.
Amelia Hutchins posted this in her timeline. The thing that gets me is, I’ve read more of the YA ones than the adult ones! https://totallybookedblog.com/paranormal-romance-recommendations/
Fabi, you have a list up.
What’s everyone reading…..or watching?
Read some of those or at least the authors. Remember hunting my library for all the pnr & if at one point. Discovering Kenyon, Hamilton, Feehan, etc all at the same time. And now I do not read any of them. I still have not read the last Sookie book. I guessed it end the way I heard but for some of the characters just not great endings. So, not sure if I’ll ever read it but used to love the series.
MichelleS your puppy sounds so cute and a manners class?! LOL!!
I don’t know what it is, but everytime I sit down to watch Outlander, my dog starts whining. How can she not like Jamie. *goes in daughters room next week*
Tasha, I have Give Me Love on my tbr. Aren’t there more books in that series now with different characters? Moving it up on my tbr list.
R.Renee, I could only use my phone or ipad with the Mori app I had to use. Hated it.
That sounds awful Cheryl. Like R, I use Word on my laptop with track changes and the comments window open.
Go read Santino NOW Maryse! haha ;P His Five Boroughs Series is one of the BEST series i’ve read in a long time. Since ICoS and Captive Prince actually… I went kinda crazy fangirl over the two first books in the series.
(And if you haven´t read his and Ais’s free ICoS series, jump on that ASAP!)
Fabi and Cheryl, if I get a good “clean” book where I don’t have to comment every sentence, I’d read the Word doc anywhere and make notes in notepad to add to Track Changes later, but when does that happen? Most of the beta books I do are so chalk full of issues I feel like I’m doing a line edit! And I realized that’s not what a beta is supposed to do, but personally, I’d want to know, so I let them know.
Fabi and R., luckily I didn’t have to make changes/comment every sentence; but it was the app that made it awful and since it was the first time I have done this, I was so frustrated and swearing at the ipad and phone. Will not do a alpha/beta if it requires that app again. Just made it so much more time consuming and so not user friendly.
Definitely Cheryl. Ask for a Word doc. Sheesh
Cheryl, I investigated since I read that book way back in 2013 and there are 2 other books with the other characters. I briefly skimmed to avoid spoilers but I think I’m most looking forward to book 3, I really wanted to know more about Casey after Give Me Love. Now I’m excited! These may just be next on my tbr since I have a couple loans coming my way soon.
Fabi and Cheryl (or anyone into beta’ing) the male writer I mentioned with the hot *scenes* is looking for another beta if either of you are interested I can send you his blurb.
I’m reading Knights of Black Swan #9 – Demons, Werewolves, and Vampires, oh my! I love this series. Oh, and if you read this series, you’ll know I should have said “vampire” because the plural of vampire is vampire in this series. LOL.
I wold recommend Gann to any fan of long, sci-fi/dyrstopian/erotica fans. I dot’ even know ho to properly categorize it. I just loved it. One of the best male leads, hands down. Hope you enjoy it Jan130. IT’S A LONG BOOK.
R. me me me I want to beta his work. Sounds like fun!
