Darkness at Dawn
Welcome back everyone. Please clean your feet off. I had to break into Maryse’s last night. It rained, like flooded and I was about to lose my books. I will replace the window, don’t worry. There was some scary crap out there last night and the book I was reading? Not helping. AT ALL!
I read Darkness at Dawn by Devin Harnois, and man it was a really short read, but it was GOOD. Everson is a solider, a modern warrior. Fighting a variety of “nasties” every night is the only thing that keeps him going. He has lost more than one partner to them and he is determined to kill all he can find. Imagine his surprise when he stumbles on a naked girl in an alley, far away from the safe city
It was a girl. A naked girl huddled aganist the wall. The sight was so unexpected it his circuits for a moment.
“The f***?” he said. She looked up at him and her eyes went wide. “What the hell are you doing way out -” Things clicked and he gripped his gun tighter. “You’re one of them.”
Striking a truce with him, they are both off duty – it’s day time – she slips off. Thoughts of her begin to consume his mind, and he wishes he could dream of her. Anything had to be better than the nightmares. Then he starts to run into her everyday, right after dawn and he is very very drawn to her. He is talking with the enemy. Hanging out with it. Thinking about more being more friendly. Breaking rules. Risking his life. But, what if she is too?
“What would happen if you didn’t come back?”
He stiffened and turned to look at her. She met his gaze for a second, then turned away. “If you wanted to stay out here, if you didn’t come back for hours, what would happen?”
She was making an offer then, not a threat. He eased. “They’d worry. I’d get in trouble, risk being suspended.”
“I suppose you shouldn’t stay out then.”
And then the tension gets cranked up. What is she at night? Can he trust her? Should he trust her? All this and more torment him as he visits her at dawn everyday…then comes an awesome moment, when I think my heart clutched over him…just a little.
“I didn’t think you’d make it this far,” she said. “I thought you’d run away.”
He leaned over her and bent his head to her shoulder. “I don’t run away,” he whispered aganist her ear.
*SIGH* Only 40 pages (I KNOW RIGHT?!) and at the end I was begging for more.
No, I emailed her asking if there is going to be more. I need more. This was a great world built and should NOT go to waste. Like I wasted a whole can of gas trying to light my fire to make s’mores with last night. That’s why there is a big burn patch in the yard. I am kinda glad it rained, even if it did almost ruin my books! Now I am all cozy in the guest room. I am sort of worried about the noises out there still. I was going to go all Blair Witch Project on you guys, and make this a vlog but I discovered my cell phone can be used to blind people. The little camera light on that thing is dangerous. Maryse should be back soon, so tomorrow I will be packing my bags and going home. I have to call a locksmith too. Unless I plan to use a hammer on my car window too……..
