My name is Sunita Yousuf, and I’m the founder of The Wannabe Cook, a Columbus, Ohio–based brand built around mindful cooking, whole spices, and storytelling. I’m originally from Bangladesh and moved to the U.S. for college, which was the first time I was really on my own with food. At first, that freedom felt exciting—I was finally able to eat all the fast food and processed food I wanted after growing up in a home where my parents strongly believed in home-cooked meals. But after the novelty wore off, I started missing the warmth, comfort, and feeling of food made at home.
That’s when cooking slowly became something much bigger for me. What started in my dorm kitchen turned into a ritual: an evening way to slow down, step away from screens, and reconnect with natural ingredients, familiar aromas, and the nostalgia of the meals I grew up with. Over time, cooking became more than just making dinner—it became a way to create comfort, share stories, and bring people together. I fell in love with the sensory side of it too: touching whole spices, smelling food as it cooks, hearing things sauté in the pan. There’s something grounding and joyful about the entire process.

Alongside building The Wannabe Cook, I also work as a Senior Product Manager at Retail Industry, where I focus on turning supply chain data into insights and scalable solutions. In both parts of my life, I love taking complex ideas and turning them into experiences that feel meaningful, approachable, and connecting—whether that’s through shared meals, spice challenges, or smarter analytics.
Over the past two years, I’ve walked nearly 3,000 miles—roughly the length of the Sahara Desert. That’s a lot of steps, and if only there were a magic carpet to keep up! I intentionally disconnect everyday and try to watch the sunset as a nice segway from the serious part of the day. I say, ‘If mornings rush you, let sunsets stop you’.
I collect old-school and traditional recipes—handed down, farm-style, or just remembered by people—bringing a slice of nostalgia to my home, far from the internet.
About the Book:
Sunita & Grandma
This book features recipes from the 60s and 70s, when my grandmother taught home economics—cooking, crafting, and more. She had a recipe book with 80–85 handwritten recipes, and I took the time to recreate all of them. Ten of these recipes are included in this book. Recreating them allowed me to reconnect with my roots, relive the comforting smells of home, and find a sense of grounding. It reminded me how meaningful it can be to spend time on things that truly matter. I drew inspiration from ideas like the Blue Zones — regions where people live longer because of mindful habits, community living, and home-cooked meals.
Journaling prompts guide you to connect food with emotions, helping you see how cooking can be both therapy and a way to honor the past.
I believe anything we can try doing for two weeks in a row has a higher chance of becoming a natural habit and slowly starts to feel less like work, and comes more naturally – Turns out, home economics wasn’t just about cooking—it was training for life. 🥕 Chopping vegetables, stirring pots, and experimenting recipes teaches patience, focus, and even mindfulness. Spending 15 days trying small, simple habits in the kitchen, and suddenly life skills you forgot you had start coming back—like a gentle reboot for daily life.
