HAPPY HALLOWEEN WEEK!! It’s time for our Monday early birds list (only 14 on this one but I’ll add more if we find ’em) and that one to the left is already in the top 50 of all of Amazon!!!
Three things:
1.) I’m absolutely hooked on Selena Gomez’s new song (Lose You to Love Me). The lyrics. That beautiful video. Tears… and ALL the feels. ALL of them. “I needed to lose you, to find me.” Whoa.
2.) Stupid insomnia!! I’ve been up since 4am and even though I was tired and soooooo cozy, I just couldn’t fall back asleep. *sigh* I haven’t had that issue in awhile.
3.) I met the most awesome German Shepherd this weekend. He’s only a little over a year old and 95lbs!! He’s HUGE!! But so sweet and playful like a puppy. He tried snuggling in my lap but we both realized he was not lap dog. *snort* 😉
4.) Oooops!! 4 things. 😉 I just found out the biggest Instant Pot is an Amazon deal of the day today, and what a deal it is!! I love mine and use it every single weekend when I prep my food for the week. One of my favorite things to make in it is Fasolakia (greek green beans that I then load up with Feta cheese) and they come out perfect and in no time at all. Yep. My absolute favorite tool in my kitchen, along with my crock pot. But the Instant Pot actually serves as a crockpot too!!! 😀

Guys I don´t know if it´s just me but I haven´t read any really good romantic book in a long time. The last good book that I read was The hating game and Colleen Hoover and Tarryn Fisher new books but that´s it. Any recommendations what was good?
Dena, have you read Ghosted by J.M. Darhower? That gave me Colleen Hoover-ish feels and is one of my all time faves.
No I haven´t. Thanks! I am gonna check that out
Dena… people keep going crazy for “Perfect Strangers” that was released a couple of weeks ago. I think that one’s next for me. Supposedly it’s a total jaw-dropper at some point but exhilarating?
😀 !!!
Thanks! I was just reading the reviews and it really looks great 🙂
Yes, Ghosted for sure! And how about Until It Fades by K.A. Tucker? I also recently read Say You Still Love Me by her, and it was REALLY good as well.
I 100% agree with Ghosted. Perfect Strangers is awesome, but if you’re looking for an old school romance, that isn’t it. It’s a romance, but not in the traditional sense.
But Maryse, yes, that needs to be next for you!
*claps and claps*
YAY!!! I love when I have my next book lined up. 😀
If you haven’t read it yet, try Brittainy C Cherry. Christina Lauren also has a book very similar to The Hating Game, its called Dating you Hating you. Also from Christina Lauren: Twice in a blue moon, The Unhoneymooners, My favorite half-night stand, Roomie and Josh and Hazels guide to not dating.
Emily Foster: How not to let go and how not to fall.
Helen Hoang: The Kiss Quotient and The Bride Test.
Huntley Fitzpatrick: The boy most likely to and My life next door.
Jennifer Peel: The Sidelines Wife and The Secretive Wife.
Kathrine Center: Things you save in a fire, How not to walk away and Happiness for beginners.
Katu Upperman: Kissing Max Holden and The impossibility of us.
Mariana Zapata: From Lukov with Love and Kulti
Sally Thorne (who also wrote The Hating Game): 99 percent mine
Samantha Young: Fight or Flight and On Dublin Street
Sarina Bowen: The Accidentals and The Year we fell down
Tracey Garvis- Graves: The girl he used to know and on the island
Katia Milla: The sea of tranquility
Krista & Becca Ritchie: Amour Amour
Hope you like at least one of those books. I have few more favorites if you want.
Ooooh this is an excellent list, Harper!!!! Thank you so much!! 😀
Good morning!
Three things:
1 – I love days when I already know what I am cooking for dinner. Meal planning stresses me out!! Tonight is sweet Italian turkey sausage with orzo, sun dried tomatoes and spinach.
2 – Halloween is making me a little sad since my son too old to trick or treat and we don’t get any kids on our street anymore.
3 – I am excited to decorate for Christmas. I decided to change things up this year and am going with gnome theme. I’ve bought a ton of them and can’t wait to put them on my mantel and bay window.
It’s still so hot out that I haven’t been in enough “fall spirit” to take out all my fun Halloween stuff and decorate. That makes me sad because I LOVE doing that. Maybe I’ll buck up and do it tonight anyway.
Gnomes are my favorite!!! I have 1 in my garden currently with my pumpkins. It looks like he’s the protector of the patch. Lol! And I have a painted wood 1 to put up for Xmas w/ a painted wood tree as well. But, I also want to get a “lazy gnome” this year. I’ve never been into Elf on the Shelf and he speaks to my soul.
Your supper sounds amazing!!
I have some garden gnomes (I love those too) but these ones are the stuffed ones. Its awesome because there will be no drama storing them or worrying about them breaking like my previous fragile Christmas decorations.
Send me a pic, Leslie of your decor and I’ll post it in one of our posts. 🙂
The fabric ones are what the lazy gnome is. I actually almost picked a couple Halloween stuffed ones up this year, but got a stuffed bat cat instead. Good idea, not having to worry about anything getting broken!
Little dude is getting older, but I’m lucky that he still loves trick or treating (CANDY!). It’s his favorite holiday. That said, we only get neighbor kids here. *shrugs* This year, his cousin will be coming here to trick or treat with him, as well as her step-sister. 🙂 Plus whoever else my niece brings from her husband’s side. lol Last year we had two kids from his side join us. It was a LOT of fun. 😀
All this talk of gnomes is making me think of Slammed. Didn’t she hate them in that book? I’m so glad I never got the updated cover for that one on my Nook…the simple cover of a curtain and a stool is so nostalgic. *sigh*
Yes!!! Didn’t Will put a ton of them in her yard and she got mad? Hee hee
I hate when authors get new covers. It totally confuses me and it’s even worse when you liked original one.
Yeah, I have mixed feelings about changing book covers. Once in a while the change is really good, but more often than not I just want the old cover back. It’s why I don’t have automatic updates turned on for my Kindle books. One that comes to mind is Forever, Interrupted. The original cover (actually, the second cover) is an unmade bed and was just so fitting and poignant, but the new one is a bicycle…with flowers. Huh?
For me, having the original Slammed cover is like having the first edition of a book. 😉
The cover that kills me most (having been changed) is Undecided by Juliana Keyes. One of my absolute FAVORITE books and that original cover was EVERYTHING and now the new one is more or less… generic.
*sigh*
Heres my review with the original cover and where I show the new one, too: https://www.maryse.net/books/book-review-undecided-by-julianna-keyes.html
It was my favorite too. So much meaning and it was just so… quiet of a space. I loved that cover.
1. The stores have brainwashed me into thinking it’s Xmas. I’ve actually mostly forgotten about Halloween for a week or more now. I’m planning out my Xmas shopping as we speak.
2. All my kids did trick or treating yesterday was whine they were hot and tired and wanted to go home. They were bored after 10 min. and I was grumbling and yelling go get me candy at every light I saw. It was exhausting. Definitely not like it was when I was a kid.
3. Still reading the new Darynda Jones and loving it. Haven’t gotten a lot of time in a couple days, but I’ll push through!
Oh yeah that’s the one Ela told us about? YES!! I have that too.
How come trick or treat was yesterday for you guys?
Yep, that’s the 1. It’s different bc it’s got both the Mom and daughter as main characters, I’m liking it, but maybe bc it’s an arc, they aren’t clearly defined and it can cause me to double take.
We had that cookout yesterday and it was in the town over, we decided to do it then bc they’re calling for rain and possible snow Thursday (which is when ours is scheduled) and I’m not trekking it if it does then. Better not to chance it was my thinking.
Oh! And, I should’ve done a #4. I did my 1st Escape Room this weekend! I dk that I really, fully knew what to expect. I assumed it would kind of be like a live clue game, almost. Or where u were in a room and had to figure a way out. But, they gave this whole speal about how we were paranormal investigators who were highly successful with a YouTube channel (Experiment in Terror feels, anyone?) and there was to be a huge event thrown in this room which is haunted. They give the back story of what it was used for and who owned it and yada yada. And we had to figure out who the ghost was and how to set them free. I tell you, I’m happy we went with a group bc I was utterly clueless on what to do. It was so much fun, but I’m glad I picked some smarty pants’ to take along. The whole setup was brilliant, we’d have never made it out though. Lol.
Escape rooms scare me!!! Or at least the versions I’ve always imagined. I know it’s “safe” but having to find my way out just freaks me out. And yes, I am NO maze fan. Yikes!!!
Whitney G. Just released a new one and was fab!
Which one Sugg? I think I might have posted on Friday’s list? Let me know and I’ll check. 🙂
Holy moly, those green beans sound amazing! I’m going to make them this week, and I’m going to try throwing some chicken in with them and then top it all with some kalamata olives and feta…8:30 in the morning and I’m already drooling for dinner!
Three things:
1. I’m considering trying keto (mostly for the increased focus and overall health benefits) but it seems so overwhelming with what I should and shouldn’t eat. I need some encouragement here! (No more candy and popcorn at the movies? 😩)
2. Time to start looking for my dress for this year’s ball! 😀
3. I saw a house this weekend where they made their entire front yard look like a spooky graveyard! All they need now is to run a couple of fog machines Halloween night and it will be perfect!
Amy, I think you recommended this book to me, but I can’t remember the name. https://www.maryse.net/reader-questions/reader-question-the-book-with-the-cantankerous-old-man-that-sells-his-ranch-to-a-widow-with-children-just-to-spite-his-neighbor.html
I looked at that one, Tessa, and it doesn’t sound familiar to me. *scratches head* Maybe someone else recommended it? Or maybe if we find out the title I can look it up in my books…
With keto… gah. The lack of certain fruits makes me avoid it. I can see not having bread, but an occasional fruit is just needed. My sister-in-law got me more into her version, where it’s less, not totally out. Again, fruit. Not a lot, just like one every other day or daily. It helps that I like things like lettuce wraps. It does not help that I hate zucchini and yellow squatch. lol No zoodles for me. I tried it not knowing it was zucchini and I KNEW it was zucchini as soon as I took a bite. YUCK
Tessa I do berries (and I agree… for me, cutting fruit was the hardest). 🙂 I do have a few grapes sometimes. There are some fruits you can do, but just in moderation and small amounts at a time because of the sugar content.
No zucchini or squash for you? Well, I guess it’s like bell peppers for me…I want to like them SO badly (the colors and crunch are so appealing!) but I can’t stand the taste. And I really do WANT to like them. It sucks.
Amy Keto is pretty easy but restrictive. Basically, you dump bread, pasta, potatoes and sweets. ALL sweets. *sigh* I know…
But they’ve made some AMAZING jams, and syrups and chocolate sweetened with Erythritol and Stevia (does not affect your blood sugar at all) and I LOVE THEM!!! I can’t even tell the difference for the most part. Not enough for me to feel like I’m missing out anymore HAPPINESS!!
Actually if you want to get strict Keto, you dump a few more things, but those up there are the mains…
I guess that’s what is overwhelming me (even though it’s pretty simple so it shouldn’t) is figuring out and remembering what sort of sweeteners are and are not allowed. Same with flours…aren’t certain ones like almond flour allowed?
I need to find a website or app or something that I can just quickly reference when I need to…
Yes almond flour is my preferred and Coconut too (but I like that one less)… unless it’s used in desert.
For me, besides the fact that my gallbladder would probably explode from the fat, is the new research on how lack of whole grains may shorten lifespans. Plus, I love rice.
Rice is another issue for me because I LOVE it too. I still have “sneak days” where I’ll eat it as part of the sushi. It’s a small quantity so I’m still within the low carb range even when i do eat it.
But yeah, I DO miss my grains. I love quinoa, I love legumes like chick peas, I love rice and especially wild rice. And it’s not “Keto” so…
To be honest, I’m more “low carb” now after a year of strict Keto. I’m still “Keto” for the most part, but I allow myself carbs here and there (super-small quantities if they’re a bad carb – like a few french fries or a bite or two of pasta) SO RARE though.
Show us the dress when you find it?? Lucky you!! I love balls!!!
“I love balls!!!”
BAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!!
*tries to regain composure*
But yes, I will definitely share a pic when I find it! 😀
*cackles*
I die.
OMG. OH. EM. GEEEEE!!!
I didn’t even clue in… not one bit. BUT OMG LOL!!!!!!!!
We’re back, Amy!!!!!
*high fives Maryse* YEAH we are! 😉
I did the same thing!
1. I’ve been beta reading Emma Scott’s Someday, Someday and if you like MM or you’re curious to try MM, you’ll love it. It’s the swooniest book I’ve read in ages. Leslie, prepare thyself. I’ve only read about 50% but I think it might be my new fave.
2. I’m also reading Parallel and Amy’s right. It’s amazing! I’m supposed to be writing right now but I can’t put it down!
3. Thursday’s our 18th wedding anniversary and the hubs is taking me haunted house hopping, as couples do! 😂
GASP!! Now I’m wondering if I should jump into the Parallel Duet instead? You guys are killing me!!!
*bounces*
I would do PS first only because the longer you wait the more chance there is of someone spoiling it for you. They’re both fast reads though!
YES Maryse! Parallel is most definitely a YOU book!!! I can’t wait for you to start it!
R’s advice is good…but I’m selfish and want you to join us in falling for this book. 😛
Happy Anniversary R! What a unique way to celebrate, sounds fun!!
Also, I want to read Parallel now and I don’t even know what it’s about.
Yes, Tasha, you really do want to read it!
I feel like this is me when I’m trying to get people to read a book I love:
LOLLLLLL!!!!!!!
Omg same! And, I’m ashamed to admit that when someone doesn’t read a book that is my favorite, hit me in all the feels, is ahmazing, I feel like,
But then I reel myself in bc I’m an adult and I have empathy and stuff so
Noted: I dk how to share the gifs. Lol
You did great! You told a whole story conveying your feelings and I’m giggling now!! 😛
Awww. I had the perfect gif response and it actually worked, cuz I dk how to copy them, and then it posted and the internet ate it. Anyway, it went something like this: (use your imagination) Omg same!! And when someone doesn’t like a book that is my favorite, gave me all the feels, was absolutely ahmazing, I feel like (gif) *takes of sunglasses* What is your malfunction??
And then bc I’m an adult and have empathy and stuff, I try to reel myself in (gif) *ponders* Is different okay?
(gif) *Crazy guy in Batman* We’re all friends here! 🤪
(Gif) *super convincingly* I’m okay. 🤗
Oh yeah Haunted Houses I DO LOVE!! As long as I’m not trapped. 😉 SO FUN!!!
1. The state is on fire again. *sighs* None near me, but the smoke has been here. Also, the winds keep changing. But, I’m happy to not be part of the fire areas. *prays for those poor people*
2. So my trip made me grab my Figment dragon from the first time I went. He’s cute, with a knight outfit, with a pen as his lance. Dude saw it and was all, is that for me? Can I have him? *eyes narrow* Love dude but the answer was NO. lol But he can hug it now and then. I’d rather buy through the Disney shop a new one for him, but he’s already uninterested.
3. I need a new music genre. Nothing is catching me right now. The other day, I turned it to a crooners and swingers station in the hope to find something to catch me. Nope. I went to pop/ hits. Full-on nope. Country… again the same. Any recs as far as a singer/band or even song to listen to? Nothing is catching. I like full, dramatic emotions. Happy, sad, angry, romantic, it doesn’t matter. Just the ability to really convey emotion.
Lana Del Rey.
She’s full on emotions, and has a definite sound to her that is all her own. But careful not to listen to too many in a row. She’s captivating and so are her videos but I find myself getting VERY dark and deep when I get too much of her.
A real mood changer and not always for the best. 😉 LOL!!
I do like her, though you are right. Her songs get you down if you listen to it too much. I’ll look into adding her to my playlist. 🙂
I should point out I do NOT like Billie Eilish. Not because of her “extreme” but because I honestly can’t hear her. My hearing impairment is in the higher register. With her music, the bass is too loud vs her voice where she’s either synthetic or whispering. So no deep bass. No whispering/ quiet, soft voice. I can’t hear that stuff… literally. lol
I think my favorite song of LDR is West Coast. I could listen to it over and over.
Tessa, have you heard of Michael Kiwanuka? LOVE his voice and especially this song:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=AZzA2Ne0HSo
What I like to do on Pandora is pick a singer or band I like and then the word radio after. Like Michael Kiwanuka radio or Metric radio or The Killers radio, and it will play the singer’s or band’s songs along with other singers/bands which are similar.
Okay, you want to feel some emotion? Watch this one:
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=goWa6EzkCh4
I’ve always loved the song, but the video makes me tear up every time.
I’ve heard that and like it. It doesn’t make me cry though. (Books broke my angst and sadness box) I always feel melancholy when I hear it, but no tears. Still, it affects. 🙂
The video is stupid. Gonna say it. I get she commits suicide, but who does it that way? SHE CAN FLOAT! That could’ve been more tragic.
“The video is stupid.” <——— LOL!
I guess if the water is deep enough and someone swims down far enough, they won’t make it back to the surface by the time they need air and will drown. What gets me is how she is crying and sobbing. If someone is sobbing like that, I’m gonna be tearing up right along with them.
But she can float! Like… float! After a certain point, you just don’t go down, your body’s natural buoyancy makes you stay and once you stop trying, float!
But, I can see how her sobbing would make you sob. (Would be sobbing too walking through a forest barefoot cause thorns and sticks).
My biggest issue is, when I say I’m eclectic, I mean VERY eclectic. So for a year and a half, it’s been alternative. Now, it is sounding the same. But, if I pick say, The Killers Radio, I get the stuff I’m bored with. Not the Killers, because them I love through all genre feels, but just the genre in general. I know. I’m weird. lol
The worst time it happened was in the early 90s. I have a confession. I DON’T LIKE NIRVANA. *ducks all peanuts* I liked songs that came out there, but there were so many whisper singers, Nirvana is literally incomprehensible to me (as in I can’t hear the consonants to know what the word is), and rap was in a screwy place, so I discovered 60s bands, went through a Carpenters phase, went through a 70 rock stage, country stage, and eventually musicals and classical stage. So see, when I say eclectic, I mean it. 😀
This song is such a love song to the comfort of music . I love the twist in the video. Turn on the captions.
https://youtu.be/Ibb5RhoKfzE
This is a new song to me. Recently a very young kpop idol committed suicide. She was very popular until she wasnt and seemed to become everyone’s punching bag. This is a song that her friend IU wrote inspired by Sulli. These lines:
There was a time she used to laugh
(As deep blue as a blue day)
Boys obviously but also girls
Even the things that aren’t human
Everybody fell for her, fell in love with her
Her laugh was that beautiful
So beautiful and now so painful. It makes me think of all the things that make someone unique and special.
https://youtu.be/fLfmJeetwl8
This because I love his voice. It is unusual and I love the way he sings in such an easy manner. It doesnt seem like he could hit some of the notes he does but it is all so easy. This is also a real place that idols would take their dates and a couple got caught there after this song, lol.
https://youtu.be/-EfjXQgE1e8
Oh, I remember seeing that on the news, bev. So tragic. People are so brave behind their screens and will say the cruelest things, not caring how it affects their targets. It’s horrible.
It is so sad, she was so young. A good reminder to treat people with care. I dont understand the vitriol people have against others and their actions when it harms no one.
Ok, well I tried something different yesterday and asked Alexa to play something upbeat. I have unlimited music so I was curious to see what she came up with. It was something Mexican, with a little English and I actually liked it. I was surprised though. I thought it’d be some big dance number, lol. Try asking Alexa to play something with feeling. Or word it however differently to see what might strike your fancy.
I don’t have Alexa. Watching the news… Nope to Alexa. I don’t need someone listening to me to “improve their speech recognition”. But I’ll try Pandora. Right now I’ve been using IHeart because I like their radio station variety.
I have a spanish song for you Tasha.
https://youtu.be/8Bi6ctgoe7w
Spanish! Gah, I knew that sounded weird when I was writing it. Lol
I like it! At first I was thinking you were teasing me, haha.
I’m not the best with song names, but I frequently listen to the station? Mellow folk on Alexa. It hits all my feels. I just say, Alexa- play quiet music and she says mellow folk is a station I might like- every time. I suppose by now I could just say to play mellow folk, but it’s become routine for the babies to sleep.
Mellow stuff is my background noise when doing something I can’t deviate my attention from. It is soothing to work through. 😀 Also, it doesn’t have that random song that jars you from thinking.
You know what book Lose You to Love Me immediately made me think of? I had the new song release on countdown, btw, I’m obsessed too. But, Bad Romance. That book still resonates with me so much. I want another that makes me feel too!
Oh, I remember Bad Romance. So. Many. FEELS.
Yes, I’m constantly going back trying to find something in the “people also liked” category, but it’s nothing. I need something. Maybe Parallel will be it! Let us know.
I still haven’t read that…
WHAT IS MY MALFUNCTION??
LOL!! 😉 See what I did there, Tasha?
Wait no… I HAVE READ it! And I loved it too. I was thinking “Bad Romeo” (I haven’t read that one).
*giggles* Maryse loves balls!!!
On that note…I am excited for Someday, Someday! 😜
Ooh ooh OOOOH!!! I think I know what’s going on, and if I’m right then the angst is a-comin’!! And probably some serious heartache…
*dives back into Parallel*
I read straight through and finished it! Now I’m trying to restrain myself from starting book 2 so my buddy reader can catch up!
I’m so jealous. But I will do Perfect Strangers so I don’t see a spoiler…
I have to get ready for work but I just want to keep reading! I’m at a pretty intense point right now…dangit! Why do I like making money so much?! Hmph…
LOL!!!! I’m right there with you my friend!!
