WELCOME TO INSTALLMENT #2 OF OUR NEWLY REVIVED FEATURE “You’ll Never Believe” and today’s feature is by one of my favorite paranormal romance authors, Larissa Ione, in celebration of her re-releases – with brand new covers – that just went live again today! She, and Blue Box Press are today’s newsletter sponsors.
And this fun story truly warmed my heart!!
She says:
“You’ll never believe…”
So, this is a fun prompt. I have a million stories that start that way (and they’re not even fiction!) But which one to pick? The NASA offer? The Anderson Cooper incident? The F-16 dogfight adventure?
Hmm.
Well, lately I’ve been on a “gut feeling” kick, as if the universe is trying to tell me something. Namely, that I need to listen to my gut. Or, at least, listen to the voices in my head…which includes my characters! For some reason, they tell me they want to do something, and my carefully laid out plot disagrees, so I don’t listen, and ultimately, I have heavy rewrites.
Whenever I think of my clearest “gut feeling,” which is also a “You’ll never believe” story, I go back about twenty years, when I was driving home from work. I’d just taken an exit off the highway onto two lanes. I was in the left, and you’ll never believe it, but a little voice told me, very clearly and very urgently, to get into the right lane.
I didn’t think about it. I just did it, even though I needed to be in the left lane for my upcoming turn.
Just as I swerved into the right lane, a vehicle whipped around the corner into the left lane, coming the WRONG WAY and speeding. Behind them was a pursuing police car. Had I not gotten into the right lane, the guy would have hit me in a head-on collision. My gut feeling saved me from serious injury…maybe even death.
So I know the importance of listening to your gut, and yet, when it comes to my writing, I tend to forget. Thank you, Maryse, for reminding me to listen, whether in my personal life or in my writing life. My characters and readers will thank you, as well!
Now, back to those stubborn characters who want to do stuff that isn’t in my outline. This time, I’ll let them!
OH I LOVE THIS!!! Warms my heart and sometimes, the Universe leads you in the right direction no matter hard you think you should go in a different one. 🙂
Perfection!!
