Reader Question – The book where he dies when they are children, she grows up and finds out he’s alive…

Raman needs our book help and I *think* we now have the answer. This one sounds AWESOME, so I had to dedicate a post to it, but might be quite spoilery so read (below) with caution…

She asks:

“I read this book recently, and for the life of me can’t remember the title or the author. Hopefully you can help!

Okay so this book is about a girl and a boy who grew up together, he’s sick with cancer. There’s this scene on a school bus where other kids are making fun of him, and she tries to defend him – only to be chastised by him. He dies, and she grows up. Later she finds out he’s alive.

He didn’t die, but his body was “donated” for testing, and he’s turned into some sort of super killer. And I believe she goes to work for the lab that he was “genetically modified” in. He escapes the lab he was tested on in, and lives off the grid. I think maybe the main heroine’s name is Maggie – but I could be way off the mark.

Any ideas?
