Rebecca needs our book help. Ooooh the part about the step-children!!! They cause her drama, I’ve no doubt!!!
She asks:
Hi Maryse,
I came across your webpage in my search for “how to find books I can’t remember the name of” and thought I’d give this a try. I’ve tried reddit and librarything but so far no response.
I’m looking for a historical novel I read maybe 15-20 years ago (but it could have been written even earlier than then, just giving you a time frame so you know it’s not a recent novel) about a younger woman who marries a wealthy older man.
I can’t remember if he was a Lord but he was definitely wealthy and lived in a big mansion.
It was a very successful marriage despite the age difference. When they were married, he already had children from a previous marriage and I think his selfish/spoiled children play a part in some of the plot as they got older.
The novel is quite long but I can’t remember any of the main plot other than at the end of the novel,

when they’re both much older,Β the hero is dying of old age and she stays by his side, refusing to be relieved by any of the servants or children, because she can’t bear to be parted from him.
It wasn’t a light happy-happy Harlequin historical. I remember it feeling slightly darker, almost gothic romance, like one of Daphne du Maurier’s novels – but not, because I looked those up.
Can you help me?? I know I’m not giving you much to go on…
Rebecca
