Rachel Caine – Morganville Vampires Series Reading Order:

by Maryse on July 8, 2009 · 51 comments

in Reading Order Guide:

Susan sent me this enthusiastic recommendation:

“One of my first votes for Vampire series (particularly for young adults, but great for all ages) are the Morganville Vampires by Rachel Caine!  I can’t get enough of them.  It’s hard to put them down, and I have to have the next one right at hand or I suffer withdrawals – ha ha.”

And Monica agrees:

“I LOVED the Morganville Vampire series. That is actually one of my favorites.”

As per the author’s website:

When 16-year-old Claire Danvers arrives in the sleepy Texas town of Morganville for a parentally-enforced year at Texas Prairie University before heading off to MIT, her life takes a turn for the scary. First, the mean girls come after her, but a quick life-saving move to off-campus housing fixes that problem, and introduces her to three new friends: teen rocker Michael Glass, Goth Eve Rosser, and hottie/slacker Shane Collins.

But Morganville’s got more secrets to reveal, starting with one very big one:

It’s run by vampires.

I’ve just bought your first three books today and already I’m loving it, but boy Monica is sure a bitch. Can’t believe there’s ten books!! How do you write that much about one story!? It’s incredible, truly talented. I’m up to chapter six now and really love it, gonna have to save up for the next seven! :)

I just started the series; On chapter one . . . Came here to see what Maryse thought of this series, but it does not look as if she has read them. Good reads does not have a high ranking on the series, but I will form my own opinion. I always give a series two or three books before I vote it off. I am undecided at the moment. We shall see! Maryse, I will let you know what I think if you are interested. Me and you have very similar tastes in books.
Thank You for your website and recommendations!

Awesome Donna! I love that you’re doing this. Too cool! I haven’t read it yet, but I hear good things…

Donna November 28, 2011 at 10:35 PM

I am just finishing book 6 and I really like the series. Here is the basic story line. The main characters are Claire, Eva, Mike, and Shane; they are all room mates after like chapter three in the first book. Claire moves in with the other three after trouble with some of the girls at her dorm. She is an advanced placement 16 year old in college; really smart! She is completely unaware as well as most of the citizens about the real deal concerning Morganville; that vampires run the city. She gets a crash course in learning the in’s and out’s of Morganville and it is really fun to watch. The vampires are not all nice and take humans as theirs and the vampire becomes the humans patrons/protector; but that comes with a price to the humans and their families. Very Fun book. I am really enjoying the series. I would not call it a big romance novel even though there is romance in it. It is more like realistic romance like you would find in the Rachel Morgan ‘The Hollows” series at a more PG 13 rating. The story is told from Claire’s point of view as she is very young in mind, so I think as the series moves on the book will get more involved. The series is currently up to book 11. A very FUN read all in all. I would recommend it to you. On a scale of 0(bad)-5(BD awesomeness); I would give these book a solid 4 and other books a 4.5. Very good read. I will let you know more as I get to the end of the series.

I’m in the middle of Last Breath, can’t wait to read Black Dawn. I’t hard to wait for the next book in a series. Thank for a good read…..

Donna December 3, 2011 at 1:09 AM

OH man I just finished last breath. AWESOME! It has a huge cliffhanger at the end and I just can’t wait for the next book. Her books come out about every 6 months, so I don’t think the wait will be long. Maryse the series get even better as you go along. It is a great story line. The romance in it is written for a younger audience, but it is there for sure. It’s a good read. You will have to let us know if or when you decide to read them. Very good!

Maryse December 3, 2011 at 6:43 PM

Great Donna!! I’m alright with YA as long as the romantic tension is there, and evolving ;)

jennifer February 17, 2012 at 2:04 PM

I have the first 4 volumes and really love them. I was wondering if they were going to be a volume 5 or if I need to get them seperate if so which one goes next after the volumes thanks they are really great cant wait to finish them.

Lacie February 28, 2012 at 12:09 AM

I love these books! Simply cannot put them down!! Can’t wait to finish them!

Rebecca March 15, 2012 at 1:07 AM

I love Morganville vampires I could not put the books down. I don’t think I have ever been this swept up in a book before. It is amazing how it is so easy to picture every character and just watch it in your head like a movie as you read. So excited for the next book to come out :)

Madison April 23, 2012 at 8:35 AM

I am addicted to the Morganville series! Love it! I just finished Book 10 (Bite Club) and haven’t been back to the bookstore yet to pick up Last Breath because I live 45 minutes away from the nearest Books-A-Million. My favorite character has to be Myrnin or Oliver. I love Myrnin’s attitude and how he secretly cares about Claire. I also love Oliver’s sense of humor at times and I’m dying to read the next book!(:

alysha June 4, 2012 at 10:29 PM

Iris.Insanity August 16, 2012 at 4:30 AM

I read it wrong. I saw ghost town in Walmart for three bucks bought it and read it without even paying attention then at dollar tree i came across midnight alley and feast of fools. Read one line and I knew I was backwards I had no idea there are 13 books. I think I’m just going to wait to buy all then read them all in ORDER lol.

Sandi August 16, 2012 at 10:22 AM

I did the same thing, I started with Ghost Town and it seemed like so much was missing and realized there were a lot more before it, it was this web site that helped me figure it out. Great series!

Barbara Graf April 17, 2013 at 6:03 AM

I just love “The Morganville Vampires” series. Unique and way out there but at the same time really catches you can brings you in. I’m up to Black Dawn right now and I’m loving it. My favorite time to read is after work on the ride home, hubbie’s driving though no worries. I was reading one page and busted out laughing when Eve called Myrin “Chatty Batty”.
My husband looked at me and said what the hell could be so funny about a vampire book. I just said “you had to be there”. Thanks Ms. Caine. I really enjoy your writing.

Rebekah May 2, 2013 at 1:26 AM

I think there is actually going to be 15 books. Because I have 14 of them now.

Caitlyn May 3, 2013 at 9:55 PM

I love love LOVE this series so much. I unfortunately haven’t read any of the newer books but I’m re-reading the series and I’m just starting Ghost Town. I can’t wait to finish it and then get the rest of the series. This books are so fricking cool!

Kristine Banning July 13, 2013 at 12:34 PM

Hello, I’ve started reading the morganville vampires series but I’m a bit confused… I purchased vol.1 which had glass houses & the dead girls dance in vol. 1 & @ the end of vol.1 it said that the next book in line would be midnight alley… I bought vol.2 which has midnight alley & feast of fools in vol.2 but @ the end of vol.2 it says that ghost town is next… However, my volume 3 doesn’t have ghost town in it, it has lord of misrule & carpe corpus in it & vol 4 includes fade out &kiss of death… Im stuck & don’t know which is my 5ook… I believe i should be reading lordofimisrule

Maryse July 15, 2013 at 11:26 AM

Hi Kristine!

The above reading order guide is correct. Not sure why your book is saying Ghost Town is next, since it’s actually book #9 (perhaps it was just a “sample” of Ghost Town, at the end of your book)?

The reading order above (and as per the actual books that are in each volume you’ve been purchasing) is correct.

I hope that helps!

Lea September 9, 2013 at 9:49 AM

i’m not a reader in general but could not put down book one ..I am looking forward to reading the rest. Thankyou for publishing..

Ang September 22, 2013 at 7:30 PM

If you get bored, try this series. I am not YA and I really enjoyed it. There is “some romance/sex” but not thick with it like House of Night. Honestly, I can’t put it down.

sharla October 19, 2013 at 4:45 PM

I have just completed the last book before daylighters. I have preordered. The Morganville Vampire series is not just for teens. :) Ask me how I know that?:) These are books I cannot put down. Thanks Rachel Caine!

Gloria May 8, 2014 at 7:28 AM

Morganville Vampires. Great books. I am age 63 and I have read every one up to book 14 and will be buying book 15.Every book keeps you glued to the page and I have to read it quick so I can read the next one. I pass the books on to my daughter and sister. I have also been in a book shop a few times and cant resist to tell anyone who is lookig at one of the books and tell them how good they are. 2 women bought the first 6 books and no doubt will continue to buy them.

Rosalinda July 30, 2014 at 12:51 PM

I was wondering if there is going to be a book 16 .because I just finished the last book and felt there was a lot of unanswered questions or maybe room for another book.

Thank you loved the series , Rosalinda

Jasmin August 9, 2015 at 3:28 AM

Hello, love the series but I have a bit of a kink that my books be the same size? Annnnd by the 8th book I can’t find any that are short? I’m going crazy! The 9th book is huge compared to the originals and I was wondering if you knew where I can collect the rest of the books all in the same size??
