Hit&Run (PASS Series Book 1)Β by Freya Barker is LIVE and to celebrate, she’s this week’s newsletter sponsor and giving away a signed copy to one lucky commenter here! π And we already have feedback…
Pam:Β I completely enjoyed… A great start to a new series for Ms. Barker with some fabulous new characters you are going to love.
Rosheen: Hit and run by Freya Barker well worth a look and read.
P. Walker: Freya Barker is also a good author to read. Most of her books have older characters and extremely sexy.
YAY!!! I do love books with older characters, too! So… what’s it about?
BLURB:
Returning home to Grand Junction would not have been Rosie Perkinsβ first choice, but with her mother no longer able to take care of herself, itβs the only one she has. As is working the night shift at a local hotel to bring in a much-needed income.
Rosie juggles to keep all the pieces of her life together and has no room to add anything more. One morning after a long shift, when she witnesses a hotel guest crash into a dumpster, her careful control starts to unravel.
Security specialist, Jake Hutchinson, has his hands full protecting the arrogant lead actor of a movie being filmed in town. Since the production company and crew arrived at the hotel, the entitled star has been nothing but trouble.
The only thing that can improve his mood is the occasional nightly glimpse of the redheaded housekeeper.
Until he finds himself trapped between desire and duty.
EXCERPT:
My heart is still beating in my throat, but right now almost as much in excitement as in fear. The man is hot, in capital letters. His voice is rough, but quiet, and my mind instantly associates it with a lazy morning in bed. I can feel myself blush at the wildly inappropriate leap my imagination takes. Sadly these are the thoughts of a woman with no life to speak of. The mind is where all the fun stuff happens, because it isnβt happening anywhere else.
His words are intended to soothe, as is his touch, but the brief brush of his fingers on my shoulders has the effect of a cattle prod. It sets off a charge that seems to spread along my skin in a hot tingle.
Yowza.βI just got here myself, and heard about what happened. Came back out to have a look when I saw you.β He tilts his head to one side, and Iβm so focused on his face, itβs all I can do not to mirror his move. βYou work the nightshift, right? Nameβs Jakeβmy team provides security for the movie people, Iβve seen you around.β
I nod stupidly, still a bit flustered that Iβm standing here talking to him. Well, technically heβs talking to me, since my mouth doesnβt seem to be working.
βI do, and I know. Iβm Rosie,β I manageβbarelyβsounding more like a phone sex operator than a middle-aged spinster on a dry spell the size of the Mojave Desert. I clear my throat and try for a more natural tone. βYou mentioned something happened?β
βYeah, behind one of the restaurants on the next block.β I notice he doesnβt specify what and is looking at me closely as he continues. βThey say it probably happened in the last couple of days. It wasnβt discovered until this morning when someone took the garbage out.β
My skin goes clammy as my mind travels back to an incident Iβd all but forgotten over the weekend.
βDiscovered what exactly?β I cringe at the note of anxiety in my voice, and quickly try to hide it with a smile.
βHomeless guy. Found him dead beside the dumpster. Crushed.β
There is no hiding my shocked intake of breath. My thoughts start spinning. The sound of a crash. An engine revving. The familiar face behind the wheel, belonging to a man who used to make my heart beat faster, but has lost all his appeal since he almost ran me over.
βMy God,β I whisper, my hand covering my mouth.
