When I decided to assemble this particular collection, the works had no real rhyme or reason other than they were short stories in the romantic mystery / suspense genre.
Two of the six are first person hardboiled detective stories set in and around the 1940’s. The rest take place in more contemporary settings, and feature heroes of a different sort (than detectives): two former special forces military men, and two assassins.
But there was something pulling them together. Something beyond the drive for these alpha men to (each) be with the woman they love.
Finally, I took a step back and looked at the stories as if they were one complete work. And I realized that if one could believe the MC’s in each one were incarnations of the same couple (in a way), coming together in different worlds –metaverse style – the stories fell into a series of beats:a first meeting, a sense of longing, a reunion, an all-consuming desire to protect her, overcoming obstacles.
It felt right to bookend the collection with the hardboiled detective stories. The seconds one provides a sense of closure for the characters’ desire for one another.
So, the final version of Vengefully Yours includes six different stories, six (emotionally damaged) alpha men, each on their own path to be with the one woman who has captured their attention, affection, loyalty, and heart.
And that’s when I saw it, the order they naturally follow:

“Are you lost?”
Rye blinked away drops of water. They traced slow paths down the sides of his face. She came into focus. Streetlights glared, throwing arcs of light at the ground.
“I shouldn’t be here.” He wasn’t sure why he spoke the words aloud.
She tilted her head, staring up at him from her position on the sidewalk. Barely a few inches away.
Too close. If she’d been this near someone else—
Splash! Tires sliced through rainwater as a car drove past. An involuntary shudder rushed down his spine.
If the incessant drizzle saturated his skin, chilling and weighting him in place, the rain appeared to have the opposite effect on her. Light diffused in the droplets caught in her hair, casting her features in a yellowish glow.
“So then, why are you?”
I don’t know, he could have said, and walked away. She’d have thought him odd, but no worse than any other random creep who might wander by.
He’d never been this close.
Never seen the faint sprinkling of freckles across her nose. Never caught the gold rim around her pale blue irises.
“Who are you?”
