Monday Early Bird Book Releases – 06-26-2023

HAPPY MONDAY!!! Time for the latest early releases over the last 24hrs. 🙂 I’m still building the list so keep checking back. Also, today’s three things features what I’ve watched recently. 😉

THREE THINGS:

1.) I finallllllly watched the latest Evil Dead (Evil Dead Rise) on MAX (I have a subscription, so YAY ME!!). I was soooo excited and have been dying to watch it since the previews. Y’all know I’m all about scary horror & possessions and/or accidentally unleashing demons are my thing. So what did I think of it?

Well… meh. I’d give it 3 stars. It started off to my liking (I like that build-up of “finding something odd” and then realizing something bad has been unleashed), but it went into full-blast, non-stop, full-on gore mode once the mom was possessed. It was just too much, unrelenting, and yes the gore/effects were great, and if you like that sort of thing, it’s gonna be goooood for you. I just like more “story” unfolding, more eerie, more tension and slow unravelling in my horror (like “Hereditary“). Maybe my horror fuse is broken? It just wasn’t that scary for me. I like those super-clever jump scares. I didn’t jump once.

2.) Speaking of which… I didn’t really love Hereditary the first time I watched it, either. But then I watched it a second time, a few years later and LOVED IT like crazy. Like an all-time favorite horror movie of mine now, and boy was it disturbing but at first… gently. I wrote this on my Facebook page:

Maryse: When Hereditary (horror) came out a few years ago, there was so much hype about how scary it was, so I was super excited. And… I liked it but didn’t love it.

I just re-watched it.

HOLY MOLY. It is excellent! SOOOO MUCH better than the first time, the scenes were intense and creepy and crazy-scary and shocking at times and that ending. *oooooooooh* Yeah that is an unforgettable movie.

3.) Oh yeah and… has anyone watched “The Dropout” on Hulu? IT IS FANTASTIC!!! I already knew of the scandal when it was on the news back from 2018 when all hell broke loose for her. But holy moly I did not know the depths of her scandal, nor the HUGE glow-up her company had and the reasons why. IT IS HUGE and exquisitely acted. Exciting, and intelligent, and so addicting. I meh’d when I read the description thinking I “already knew this story” but boy was I wrong. I put it on thinking it could play in the background while I worked, and instead I was HOOKED. I marathon watched that one and am dying for more like it!! Not just documentaries, but acted documentaries (the actors make it so much better… so REAL because you get the inticracies of their interactions and relationships and their lives). Kind of like Dahmer. I think I’ll try Dopesick next (that one is about the opioid epidemic and the medical companies behind it… and it too, is acted). Let me know if you have any recommendations for me. I need more!! 😀
