She had a twisted front tooth. Twelve is an awkward age. Her eyes, ice blue crystals flecked with indigo, were red-rimmed and puffy.
One thousand four hundred and ninety-five before this day she was twirling around the living room in unmatching socks and a blue sundress with thin shoulder straps. Strands of her unruly mane spilled victoriously from the french braid rejoicing, “Free at last, free at last!” She brushed them from her eyes as she twirled. Her sister was playing the piano, her dad his guitar; they were jamming. They were happy, she was happy, Mom was happy.
A year later she was dumping vodka down the drain, wishing it would leave forever. Today she said goodbye to her daddy who had.
