Review by Johanne Pearl Couturier
The second book I read on vacation (well, it was the first book in fact but I did not give it 5 stars like I did for Final Girls by Riley Sager) was up to Mr. Coben’s standards, in my opinion at least. He is a very prolific author AND I love almost everything he writes. The minute I get into one of his stories, the mind movie starts. I forget who I am, where I am, that I even exist. From the first line, he sets the tone. By the end of the first page, I’m THERE. We are “God” who knows everything… particularly everything going on in Maya’s head…
Maya, an incredible woman, is an ex-military who just buried her husband. He was a very handsome successful man from a pretty rich family, and Maya had to accept a few things that seem to come with wealth, even though she really felt awkward with having a nanny for her lovely daughter, instead of kindergarten. Her best friend offers her a house camera that should calm her unease about the nanny. Even though she felt bad watching someone out of foolish concerns, when she sees her husband on her living room’s camera recording, AFTER his death, she starts her own investigation.
As with Coben’s signature style, it cannot be simple! Nothing ever is, really… particularly with rich families who do not want the public to know about some events that happened in their past. And Maya understands that in a way, because the man who made her lose her military career still has something that could make it worse…
How do you decide between what is true or not within all the information you gather? How do you keep yourself sane when you know everyone around you seems to think you’re not anymore? You won’t expect the end… I know I did not believe it and had to read twice! But it is soooo fitting. 😉
I need another vacation now, because I feel like I want to live another thrilling story yet again!
