Fabi has multiple “book/blurb catnips” (as we all do) and I can definitely relate to her on these (well especially on the jerk-face, moody heroes, but I certainly have been taken away by a time travel or two. π Outlander, anyone?
Fabi: Oh my goodness, I love reading about those broody, standoffish Hs, especially if they have a strong helping of a-hole thrown in. I love to see them tamed (or at least calmed) by the right heroine.
But my catnip? Goodness, I have way too many flavors to list them all. There is one, however, that has stood the test of time. (ha! βtimeβ).
Time Travel Romance has always been, and will always be, a favorite catnip flavor for me. Any time itβs mentioned as a sub genre or as part of the blurb, I will stop and take a double and triple look at that book.
ALSO….
Fabi:Β I probably have tons of catnip flavors. But my most basic and persistent ones are titles and covers. I am not the only one who picks books based on titles and covers.
Come on folks, fess up! Who has read a book because they thought the title or cover was cool. Itβs not that I wonβt read a book with a title that doesnβt at first appeal to me, itβs just that it will take reviews/feedback to bring it to my attention.
Guilty, guilty aaaannnnnnnnnnnnnnnd GUILTY!!! π
Who else?
Titles don’t really affect me but I struggle with bad book covers!
Hmmm. I don’t really get swayed that much by covers cos I mainly read on kindle and the cover pics are so tiny (and in B&W on my device!). You all know I’m not a fan of anonymous overly ripped torso covers, but I will still read that torso book if it gets a good rec or it’s by a fav author.
But yes Fabi, I love those broody standoffish Hs as well π Just waiting for them to meet the right woman. Yep, that’s catnip for me too.
Good thing I have salmon and tuna and cod and even a little
If I see Billionaire anywhere in the title, I usually just keep on scrolling. Now don’t get me wrong, I love me some broody rich alphas, but I just can’t with an over abundance of Billionaire titles. I guess it’s just not original enough for me right now. I also am an admitted cover snob. To me if there wasn’t much thought into the cover, how much thought will there be in the book? And on the flip side, I’ve been duped by beautiful covers before, but I just can’t pass up a pretty cover. It’s like I have to collect them. So maybe that is my “Book Catnip”!
Same. I don’t normally pick based on a cover, but I have been put off by a cover… *sigh* oh Fabi, I love reading about your catnip!
hmmm, my comment was cut off halfway through. Maybe because I used an emoticon. Sorry ladies.
Fabi, I need to read some more time travel books……I don’t think I’ve read any! What would be your top recommendations? I love the broody jerks too! And I must admit some covers I just can’t resist!
Nikki, I agree, if I see “billionaire” in the title lately…..moving on.
I used to read and love so many of those, but it’s been too long for me to remember the titles (long before e-books).
These are some popular ones in the sub-genre. I’ve read a few of them but not all.
Outlander (Outlander #1)Β
The Time Traveler’s Wife
A Knight in Shining Armor
Beyond the Highland Mist
A Discovery of Witches
Maryse, I love your picture above!!!
I have Outlander! And I did see the movie, Time Traveler’s Wife, and loved it, but I’m sure the book was probably so much better (as usual)!
Thanks for the list Fabi!
Fabi, the first paranormal romance I ever read outside of Knight in Shining Armor was Constance O’Day Flannery’s time travel romances. You might want to check her out.
LOL Fabi I have crazy-face. π I call it “catnip face” π
Titles & Covers, eh? Well, once upon a time when I went to the library & bookstores for my book, sure! I relied on that almost excluseively. Not gonna lie!
But now, with Kindle… I’m not quite as swayed. Some titles are total “run for the hills” for me. Case in point,
“Gabriel (BBW Shifter Secret Baby Football Romance) (Shifter Football League Book 1)”
Seriously? Would you read THAT? When I see tropes, cliches & such in the TITLE already, nope… just no.
Ooh! Also a play on words! Totally not into it. “Ready to were. Shift Happens” … hardeeharhar. I get it….. NOT!
I still like ONE WORD TITLES. Am I weird?
You know what else? You have to give Kristen Ashley credit. Her books have some amazing titles & good covers, and they’re big books! On a shelf, they’d be awesome! At Peace, Broken Dove, Jagged, Breathe, When the Sun Falls From the Sky, Own the Wind.., great titles!!
That’s my catnip right there when it comes to purely looking at a book for title, cover, and “heft”,
Thanks Tessa. π I was just thinking that the first book in the Dark Hunters series is actually a time travel.
MichelleS that’s exactly where my catnip preference comes from… bookstore browsing. Covers, titles and “heft” were the eye-catchers back then. I also really like the one one word titles. Maybe because they were used in a particular genre or something?
That title is hilarious Michelle. (βGabriel (BBW Shifter Secret Baby Football Romance) (Shifter Football League Book 1)β) A definite NO from me. That whole concept. I can’t even….. But you know, somewhere out there it’ll hit the catnip buttons for somebody.
I agree KA has some great titles. Now I’m rethinking my thought that I didn’t think titles were that important. Ooh I think I just thunk too much then LOL.
Billionaire in the title is an instant turnoff for me too. Nikki. You just know it will be cliche city.
Biggest turn off for me with titles is Bad Boy. It just sounds cheesy. BBW is a second. I have nothing against the heroine being BBW, but when they put it in the title, it usually means a lot of whining. When it’s not in the title and she’s BBW, she’s usually kick… butt. π
You know that title was not made up, right? That’s actually a book.
I agree, Tessa, with the BBW being in the title. I’d rather it just happen to be in the book, and not announce it s a title. Will never read a book that put that on the cover.
Me too Michelle and Tessa about BBW in the title. I guess some people are looking for it specifically so that’s why it’s there up front where people can search for it. But yeah, I’d rather just have a good story and if there’s a BBW h OK but just let it come up naturally in the story.
