<— LOOK WHAT’S LIVE!!! This is the latest and LAST release in Kristen Ashley’s “The ‘Burg” series and OMG this blurb gave me a jolt or sure. A case of unrequited love. I just hope I get to “live it” with the heroine and feel that ache for a bit before the delicious “MINE” relief. 😉 YAY ME!!!! I mean who can resist this?!!
In love for years with the last bastion of the ‘burg’s eligible bachelors, Garrett Merrick, Cher worked hard at making him laugh. Being one of the guys. Having him in her life the only way she could. All this knowing he was in love with another woman…
*happy wiggle*!!!!!!! 😀
Lee: 39% in Hold On..!! Arghhhhh the feels!!! I just CAN’T!!
Maryse: I LOVE FEELS!!!!
Rochelle: I spent the morning reading Hold On. It was so damn good! Yes, I cried and now I think I’m ruined for other books.
Okay so from this list, MY “I-have-to-read-this-now” list includes: Hold On (of course!! KA unrequited love for me? Yes please!) and Begging for It (I absolutely LOVED book #1 and it had me crazy and I couldn’t wait for relief, and here it is!! I hope! 😉 ) and Crosstown Crush (Cara McKenna!!! Also my favorite author and this married couple is trying out a new fantasy and OMG HELP!! It’s giving me cramps already!), and Badger (also by Cara McKenna and the story sounds SO unique and so awesome and kind of dark and hilarious Oh I HAVE TO READ THIS BADLY!!) and Hanover House (she’s studying psychopaths and serial killers), and Wake-Up Call (wakes up with amnesia of the last 5 years and she does NOT want her life…). And I highlighted a bunch more that sound crazy-good too, below.
Let me know what ones sound good to you.
P.S. Let me know if I’m missing any or if you loved any (from this list or elsewhere).

Get Maryse’s Book Blog updates delivered by email (you’ll get one daily email that will have each post from that day consolidated on it).
Decisions…decisions… to start the KA series or go with Asking for it, then read the new release Begging for it…
Hanover House is giving me a major itchy one-click finger… gah, I’m not supposed to buy anymore books!!!
Thanks as always Maryse!
I’m skimming through Asking for it to reacquaint myself with the story line then I’ll be reading Begging for it tonight
Twitchy fingers!!!! Thanks Maryse! Great list as always!
So many goodies today, especially in the PNR section. Queen of Shadows, Angel’s Enigma, The Drafter… So many goodies.
Who else is Buddy Reading Begging for It?
I started Begging For It last night when it showed up early in my library…yay me!!! That usually doesn’t happen but I’m not looking a gift horse in the mouth. Especially a gift HORSE like Jonah…you can draw your own conclusions from that statement. 😛 I’m only about 15% in but it didn’t take long to slip back into their deliciously messed up world!
Oh yeah, and I had to go back and skim a few parts from Asking For It so I could refresh my memory before starting Begging For It. As much as I loved AFI, I just couldn’t remember a few key important details.
“OMG That blurb!!! Please let it hurt for awhile. LOL!!” <—— That. THAT right there is why I love coming here…if you've never wanted that while reading, it can't be explained; if you *have* wanted that while reading, there is no need to explain! 😀
Great list, Maryse 😉 Just want to remind you of this cookie! Broken by J.L Drake❤️OMG, I looooooved it!! She’s abducted and a special Force guy saves her and keeps her hidden! He’s hot 😉 *squeeeeeeeeeee*
Anyone know of something that is extremely light and funny, that has been recently released in the past couple weeks or so. Work has gotten a bit much and i need a break.
I think Hanover House might be my next read after I finish up my library books. Vengeance Road by Erin Bowman came out today and looks reallly good, a little different but sounds exciting. And French Kissing by Lynne Shelby popped up on my recommended for you page today. looks really good, like chick lit romance. And SR Grey has a new one coming out in a week or two that’s the follow up to the Allure of Julian Lefray that I loved! Different characters, I think she said something like a love/hate type which I love!
Thank you Marit!! I added it. 😀
Ooooh Tasha I’m adding it. Thank you!!
Amy… right?? THAT is what I love… it’s what I crave in all of these books. Stomach cramps AND butterflies.
LOL!!!! 😛 I’m so glad so many of you understand…
Oomph… you added more… oh man… there’s a whole lotta intriguing in this list!
YES!! Stomach cramps, tight chest, splotchy skin…I LOVE books that give me actual physical reactions! 😀
Oh and my pleasure Grey and Ella, and Tessa and crew!! 😛
Hrmmm… Toni good question. Let me see if something pops in my head. Lately I’ve been on an angsty or super-psycho book kick. LOL!
Steph and Amy I’ll be skimming mine too…
I just finished Sugar Baby Beautiful by JJ McAvoy. I got towards the end and was literally smacked in the head with a surprise I did not see coming at all. That’s how I know I’ve read a great book! Don’t miss reading this book Maryse.
Toni, Pucked by Helena Hunting! So funny!
Lots of goodies here today…..i just can’t take it anymore!
I have to skim AFI too…..but I just read your review again Maryse and that helped!
I’m in lala land right now with Hemy (Walk of Shame series)…..whoa….*fanning self*
I guess I’ll be starting Hold On tonight. Finally, something I’ve been looking forward to. Please please please give me those KA feels that I loved so much once upon a time.
Tessa! Tessa! I finally read FCU 🙁 I want Logan’s story now the snippet wasn’t enough!! But taaaadaaaa by fav KA’s book is out so I’m 33% in *sigh* I still love joe the most though I’m bagging him in my love that imaginary guy box and now I seriously have to go to bed its 23.18 here and a school night!!! Being bad for KA lol night guys!!
Who is reading Begging for it? Plan to start in like an hour. Jean you ready or are you still off stripping?
MichelleS & Laura please keep me posted. I mean I know I’ll read it either way but…….
You know I’m really looking forward to Woods story. And nervous about it
Oh, and I had pre ordered Vengeance Road. I just had to. Though more than I’d usually pay on unknown author. Hope i don’t regret it, lol.
Another one I’ve seen good buzz for is Dumpling but the ebook is more the hardback…um no.
30% into Begging for it. So far, it’s good. Not any tummy twists yet, though.
*fans self with top* Oh Jonah…you naughty, yummy man…
Amy!! Eeeeeep! I love your reaction. 🙂
Amy lol. Going to a half hour or so more til I can start.
Can’t wait.
Can I say I really like the cover for vengeance road.
Maryse, watcha reading?
bev I’m reading “Creep” because my psych-thriller need was still in full effect after the last one didn’t deliver. Then… onto a love story! 🙂
Great list Maryse! Thank you!
Badger sounds good! Hopefully it has a HEA.
I think I am going to start The Dean’s List tonight. I love books with secret societies and this one has great reviews. Also reading At Peace soon. Maybe after TDL 🙂
Bev Vengeance Road sounds pretty gritty. Let us know what you think!
I went to get a hair cut today and it turned out nice but much shorter than what I expected so I am getting used to it. I hate it when this happens but at least it looks ok lol.
That happened to me once too, Anne, and I ended up LOVING it, once I learned how to style it… BUT it is a shock to the system at first. I remember not feeling so good all of the sudden, that day.
*steps up to the mic*
Um, ahem . . . .
*taps mic*
Is this thing on?
Oh, hi. Yeah, my name is Allison, and I would like to announce that I just finished my first Kristen Ashley novel. Please, someone, tell me what to do with all these feels. Because I’m feeling all of them.
I keep hearing how amazing her books are but none ever really caught my eye but then I saw all the raves about At Peace and it was on sale and so yeah. It happened.
I really did love it and I really did openly cry. However, there were times I felt it got a little repetitive. Like the way someone is speaking and someone else keeps interrupting. Over and over and over.
“But Joe blah blah blah blah”
“Babe-”
“And then blah dee dee blah . . . ”
“Babe-”
“Only blah blibbidy blah . . . . ”
“Babe-”
This conversation happened like 17 times between several different people. Also, I get it. Joe likes to protectively tuck tiny women under his arm.
I. Get. It.
And I know it sounds like I’m complaining, but I really did enjoy it.
SOOOOOO – WHAT NEXT? What Kristen Ashley novel should I hit up next?! I’m not committed to reading more in the Burg series. I sort of have my eye on Deacon. And I tend to like dark novels. I love assassins. I like guys who are sort of shady but one just has to love them anyway.
Feel free to toss me KA suggestions if you are so moved!
Also, ANYBODY CONTEMPLATING READING ASKING FOR IT – Do it and do it NOW. Best book I’ve read in a long time.
LOL Allison!!
I love this mini love/rant. It’s true there is plenty of repetition in her stories, but there is something about the feelings she’s able to pull out, stuff that I’ve felt deeply myself and know EXACTY how she’s feeling when the angst starts.
And the mooning over someone… from afar, and that thrill when they finally look at you back. Yes all of that in full force in Kristen Ashley’s books.
I think I’d say Sweet Dreams, or maybe even The Golden Dynasty. Or Lady Luck. Oh SO good.
I forgot their different experiences in Scotland. I just find that so sad.
Anne I’m glad you like it. Have had that happen, too. And ended up liking it also, lol.
Allison, for next, have you read Begging for It yet? It’s pretty good so far.
I’m sure that your hair looks cute, Anne 😉 Short hair is hot! 😀 It will grow out fast again.
I’m on Shattered by J.L Drake. It’s s mind blowing!
Hanover Chronicles) by Brenda Novak looks creepy! This is right up my alley 😉 Have some of you read it?
Ooooo Ive got a few if those pre-orders….well pre-ordered. Cant wait for another dose if Christina Lauren, JA Haus and Kendall Ryan.
Hold On by KA sadly disappointed me and I am a huge fan of hers!
It was an unnecessary addition to the series and by doing so was so repetitive but without the KA magic and ‘feels’ like her other books have:(
Still looking forward to her other stuff to come though from another series:)
Caitlin did they “happen” (in full-force) too fast? Sometimes I think it’s THAT that lessens the KA magic for me a little in her more recent ones.
Tessa, not yet and I’m dying to! But a friend and I are busy reading it next week so I promised her I’d wait.
What a list!! 🙂
Tasha, I loved Allure of Julian Lefray. The new one is- The Allure of Dean Harper releasing September 28th by R.S. Grey. I think he was the restaurant owner “player” friend in TAOJL.
After I finish Not You It’s Me, which I’m really enjoying even though no “hurts” or tummy twisting, yet; then I’m reading Asking For It and Begging For It!!
Anne, short hair is really in right now-sure you look great!!
Just read (and loved) Hard to Fight by Bella Jewel. The main character is a female bounty hunter who is trying to be taken seriously at her agency. She is finally given a big assignment, but the fugitive she is after ends up being super complex and sexy. Good stuff! I’ve also enjoyed some her Joker’s Wrath MC series, but this one had some really interesting components and a bad-ass female lead.
Maryse, I just finished reading Sweet Dreams by Kristen Ashley.. And OMG!!!! I loved this book. I want more of Laurie and Tate.. What do you recommend after reading a book like this? One that stays with you even after your done…
Has anyone else started queen of shadows by Sarah J. Maas???? OMG I’ve been devouring each page!
Sorry bev, but I did get totally sidetracked by the strippers! Lol! I start a 10 day vacation Friday so I will definitely get to it on my time off!
Maryse I think the problem was that it just didn’t feel like the story really NEEDED to be told and it could have just been a novella. A few people have said the epilogue is the best part of the entire book which I understand. I think I wanted to really like it because its Kristen Ashley and I love and have a history with her books, even though it wasn’t creating the ‘feels’ KA usually does :(.
Still holding my breath for a series in LA with Mace and his security team!
Ash, I’m trying to hold off on getting it, and wait until the library gets it in, but there are already two holds on it. I may give in before then. My luck, that means I won’t get it until October. I don’t think I want to wait that long.
Whew.. Just finished Ride Steady by KA. Not as good as other oldies but still enjoyed it. Can’t wait for Walk through fire! It is preorder and sounds so good! Btw, has anyone read Avenger’s angel by Heather Killough-Walden? In the mood of paranormal and thinking about reading it.
Allison you need to read The Golden Dynasty by KA. You need to! Its my favorite from hers.
Bev I am kinda digging my new hair cut to be honest. Yes its pretty short but I think it looks good on me 🙂
Marit that’s true! Hair does grow quickly and I needed a change so its all good lol
Cheryl thank you! I think it looks good I just need to get used to it. Oh I loved The Allure of Julian Lafrey too and didn’t know Dean’s story was coming out this month! Yaaay! Yes Dean is the restaurant owner/womanizer friend. Can’t wait for his story.
Maryse yes its a shock! When I was at the salon I was kinda having a panic attack lol. But today I kinda like it. Like you said is all about knowing how to style it 🙂
I’m with Anne…Allison, definitely read Golden Dynasty!!! I wish I could read it again for the first time. *sigh*
Anne, I chopped off my hair from my mid back to my shoulders a little while ago and it took me a little bit to get used to it. 😕 I’m growing it out now, but one thing I can say though is that it takes a lot less time (for me, at least) to style shorter hair.
Cheryl…I keep seeing Not You, It’s Me in my recommendations list but I can’t remember seeing anything about it here. Keep us updated ’cause I’ve been curious about it!
Maryse…is it Creep by Jennifer Hillier? I read that one not long ago when I found it on my Nook, which I had to read from ’cause I let my iPad drain down to zero. *snort* I thought it was pretty good, not as suspenseful for me because of the multi-POV but it still had an edge to it. Also, there was a random comment made at one point which gave something away way too easily for my taste, but then again I have a really bad habit of trying to figure things out instead of just living in the moment of the story, ya know?
“I have a really bad habit of trying to figure things out instead of just living in the moment of the story” I thought everyone did that. Crap, does that make me odd again?
Finished Begging for It. It was good, but there were opportunities to really pack a punch, and it didn’t go there. Also, I figured out the who did it right away. :/
Hehe Tessa, we can be odd together. 😉
And I’m not finished with BFI yet but I would bet my left ovary that I know who is behind everything. At least Jonah is still hot. 😛
Amy it does take less time to style my new hair so thats a plus! It’s a big change but that’s what I wanted, its just it took me a little by surprise lol
I am almost half way through The Dean’s List and liking it so far! She is 25 and he’s 42 so big age difference but it works.
Allison… I’m with the rest of the peanut throwers *I’m looking at you Amy!* You’ve gotta go with Golden Dynasty. (Although, I do freely admit that I am so OCD that I had to read them all in order, so Wildest Dreams is first in that series, then Golden Dynasty is 2nd) I’d never read any KA before that series either!
I’m reading Reveal right now… I really want to read BFI, but I haven’t read AFI yet, and I’m on a buying book lockdown right now.
He has better hair than me! (Yes because I was *only* looking at his hair) https://www.facebook.com/limalimonentretencion/videos/1606129049667637/
Jonah is definitely hot. Super hot. 😛
I gave in and got Queen of Shadows. *sighs* I couldn’t resist. It’s so wonderful to find a really good fantasy.
Anne, he has better hair than almost every other person in the world. That’s insanely pretty.
I’m the odd one. I can’t believe none of you have not started Sweet Dreams. How long have you all wanted Maryse to read FCH? I’d be all over that.
Man buns, Lmao!
When the mood hits. Right now, just not in that reading mood. 🙂
Holy hot hair!!!! Laughing when the backgound music started *porno*
Crosstown Crush sounds good and I think it is part of a standalone series, but does anyone know for sure. Didn’t want to read too much in the reviews.
I emailed the author of Wake Up Call and she said: “each book can stand alone. Each story is about a different woman from Sarah’s playgroup. The same characters will meet up and you can stay connected through the years but the protagonist and plotline will be different.” So enjoy when the author responds to questions, but it would be nice (and I think Fabi said this before) if the authors would put whether the book has a CH, is a standalone, or is book 1 in a series.
Work has been crazy hectic but wanted to pop in quick to post a few freebies for y’all 😀 I finished up the Hades Hangmen books 2 & 3 but it took me a while…like a week which means you know I’ve been working too much! They were ok/average for me. I liked the story a lot but was missing a connection with the characters…even Flame and Maddie 🙁 Maybe it’s because I was reading only a couple chapters a day and broke the story up too much? I started on a MichelleS rec that caught my eye, Lord of the Isles, and so far it’s just what I needed! After that I need to pick a PNR from the list above since there’s a bunch of good ones!
Kill Devil Hills by Sarah Darlington
Finding Gavin by CA Harms
The Wright Brother by Marie Hall
Irrevocable by Skye Callahan
Deadly Shadows by Jaycee Clark
Wolf Creek Alpha by Jo Ellen
Alpha Girl Books 1 & 2 by Aileen Erin
Found out Crosstown Crush is the first in a new ménage series—three standalone erotic romances featuring three-ways! The titles are Crosstown Crush, Downtown Devil, and (tentatively) Midtown Man. Reminds me of the book a while back everybody was raving about, The Ground Rules. Have a feeling there’s going to be some angst with this “relationship.” *one-click*
Thank you Michelle! You’ll love Lord of the Isle. MichelleS’s recommendation was seriously good.
Anne!! Now that’s a Mun!!And errr very educational too
OK, here’s where I duck as peanuts come flying at me from all angles.
I’m not into paranormal. No fantasy. No sci-fi. So Golden Dynasty . . . I read the blurb and was immediately a big no.
Why? No clue. It just doesn’t appeal to me. I read the Twilight series YEARS ago and liked it. And I think that’s the most paranormal thing I ever read. In terms of romance, anyway.
I love the Outlander series and The Time Traveler’s Wife.
But that’s about it.
Feel free to ban me from this blog. I am so heartily sorry. 😉
How about Motorcycle Man. Also, everyone keeps suggesting Sweet Dreams. One of those might work.
Almost finished my book!!! And now I’ll be ready for romance next. 🙂
Now I gotta scroll up and catch up with the comments.
No banning for different book-love here Allison!
Right now I’m on a psych-thriller kick and these guys are still my friends. LOL!
Looooove psych thrillers.
Tessa, I downloaded the sample for Sweet Dreams. I might give it a go, but so far not appealing to me. I will check out Motorcycle Man. Thanks!
Allison I swap favourite genres like clean underwear! Ill be on a HEA sweet contemporary kick for a while then splurge on a whole hot vampire series.
Cant do two KAs in a row either….they’re too wordy for me. But try Sweet Dreams. Tate is a hotty and its one of her best.
You’re welcome. Others might know more. I just thought that Motorcycle Man was super sweet with mystery.
Maryse, what type of romance? Angsty, dark, sweet, funny? If angsty, FCH. *grins*
Yay Tessa!! So far Queen of Shadows is worth every penny. I’m with you, it’s so hard to find good fantasy.
I finished 53 Letters For My Lover (I loved this one . . . Nice and angsty), then followed it up with Sustained by Emma Chase. READ.THIS.ONE! it had me laughing out loud uncontrollably. I looked like a fool on the beach! I hated paying full price for it, but these Legal Briefs are worth it! I have no idea what to read next. Back to angsty? Something light? Thriller?
Sharon I LOVE the sound of that. Thank you… YES!! And I know I’m in the same position? Angsty? Funny? Thriller? I love ’em all.
Ash, have you read Written in Red by Anne Bishop or Lord of the Fading Lands by CL Wilson? Those are insanely good too.
I just finished One Kick by Chelsea Cain. It’s a mystery/thriller/suspense. I really loved it and I think if you like that genre you should give this one a shot. So much more than what I had thought and expected from the blurb! This is the first book I’ve read from Chelsea; I’ve had the first book, Heartsick, in her Archie Sheridan and Gretchen Lowell series for a couple years sitting on my shelf that a few of my family members have been begging me to read, but I just hadn’t gotten to it. Paperbacks are a pain for me, lol. But I squirreled from my current read and am about 30 pages in and am really liking this one too! Thriller with a female serial killer and the detective she had captured and tortured. 😀
Glad you guys enjoyed the hair tutorial *grins*
I finished The Dean’s List and really liked it. It was sexy, sweet and a little angsty. Just how I like it. Its a 4/5 for me.
Don’t know what to read next. I am between At Peace by KA and Worth It by Linda Kage.
Amy!
Yes it’s that one. I’m finishing it up. I liked it… but it didn’t blow me away like some do…
And yet it has so many of the elements I enjoy in reads like this, so I have no idea what it is that is keeping me at a 4 star level with this one…
Reveal by Elle Brooks… I’m getting to the *OMG my stomach hurts because of the angst* part…
I read Slammer by Tabatha Vargo last week…it was ok. But now I’m geared up for a real good twisty, turny psych-thriller of a mind f*ck… any suggestions?
Sorry bev, but I did get totally sidetracked by the strippers! Lol! I start a 10 day vacation Friday so I will definitely get to it on my time off!
So excited…..i just saw that Grayson’s Vow by Mia Sheridan is coming out September 10!!!!!!! Perfectly timed for my vacation! 4 hours left of work and then I’m done!
Has anyone read They who fell by Kevin Kneupper? Getting some great reviews.
I haven’t heard of it, Young, but I shall look it up! Thank you!
Jean…any big plans for your vacation? Hey, you know if you go to the RT convention next year in Vegas, Thunder From Down Under is there. Just sayin’. 😉
Allison, if *I* haven’t been banned yet from this blog then you are definitely safe. 😛 I’m the same way with M/M though…the couple of times in my reading where there has been a single chapter male POV with another male (like in the Up In the Air series) I felt absolutely nothing, except maybe bored. And even with a male POV book I often struggle…I feel SO much more with a female POV, maybe because I can relate to the situation or emotions and can feel like I’m living it. I can’t do that with a male POV. Except Transcendence. Oh, also I Know It’s Over…THAT one had me teary-eyed with a huge lump in my throat by the end. Yeah, I felt the feels with that one.
AMY banned? *gasp* NEVER!!! We love her too much! She makes us drinks, keeps us updated on the coolest makeup and colors, she’s the stuffed manatee guardian and she loves angst like no other. My book soul-mate! PLUS… she’s hilarious and has a potty-mouth but in the cutest way.
And welcome Allison. I’m loving your recommendations. 😀
HELLO!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *waves hands frantically* I am finally on the last Merry Gentry book!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! *phew* The first seven books were great and I tore through them then I hit 8 and it was slow for a while and NOW, NOW I’m on 9 and the final in the series. Still holding my interest but BUT BBUUUUUTTTTTTTT well I dunno…just felt like dragging out the BUTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTTT *giggles* didn’t mean that “butt….. Yep on a PNR high.
LOL Ela… that series sounds quite crazy.. and I’m giggling with you over your PNR high. 😛
Maryse…my issue with Creep was that I needed more from it. I wanted my heart to race and my tummy to twist, and that just didn’t happen. Ooh, that bathroom scene though…I wanted to smack his stupid a$$. Idiot. Grrrr…
Grey…have you read Mud Vein? Messed with me so much it was a five-star read for me which I loved and hated in equal measures. I literally shook my iPad after the last page ’cause I was so worked up, but it was such a great ride! Tasha recommended Heartsick up there, and it sounds like it might be what you’re looking for.
Just headed to the Jersey Shore to enjoy the weather, friends, food, drink, and our boat! (And please don’t compare it to that stupid TV show….it’s not like that!) And my bday’s tomorrow so looking for lots of Amazon gift cards!
Amy did you read Begging For It? Tessa didn’t seem thrilled with it so now I am hesitant!
Also Grey, Insanity by Lauren Hammond was a bit of a mind screw (and a nice kick to the gut) for me but more towards the end. Not a psych-thriller though so… *shrugs*
First line Thursday, ladies!
“I’m ashamed of what I want.” ~ Begging For It by Lilah Pace.
Yep, still reading it. Not much free time the last couple of days.
Jean, I’m still working on it. Jonah is still freaking hot and I’m enjoying it, but it’s not affecting me like AFI did. Maybe it’s just my mood or that I haven’t been able to sit and read it for long stretches? I dunno. But I would still say read it if AFI left you hanging like it did me. 😀
Just in case you don’t pop in tomorrow…HAPPY (early) BIRTHDAY!!!! *squeezes Jean* Birthday cake martinis are in order!!
Happy early Birthday Jean! Heading on vacation too, so not sure I’ll be commenting next few days.
First line:”The dial tone buzzes in my ear, mocking me — just as it’s done the last two times I called the studio. Not You It’s Me by Julie Johnson. Still reading this and then not sure what will start next. Waiting to hear more about Begging For It.
Thanks Amy! I’ll take that martini! I really need this vacation. I have still been running to the hospital everyday for the last month to visit my family member and it’s been exhausting! And it has seriously affected my reading! I’m so behind!
First line Thursday:
“Walk of Shame is full of people partying and getting wasted beyond sense, but really, I just can’t seem to get my head into being here.” (Cale, Walk of Shame Series #3) …..yep strippers! And he’s a virgin stripper! They are short, easy reads, with really hot, hot sex!
Thinking of reading something with more feeling next like My Husband’s Secret…..anyone here read it?
Jean, I read My Husband’s Secret a year or two ago and loved it!!
HAPPY EARLY 21st. BIRTHDAY 🙂
“My fantasies always begin…normally.” Asking for It, Lilah Pace
Thanks Cheryl, have a great weekend! Yeah, not many people are saying anything about BFI.
Yep 21, that’s right! Lol! Thanks Ela!
Happy Birthday Jean! I hope you get tons of cards and sun.
Begging for It, I should say, I did really like it. However, it was nothing compared to Asking for It. Asking for It was more emotional than Begging for It, if that makes sense and they automatically get compared.
First line Thursday:
‘There was a thing waiting in the darkness.’
Queen of Shadows by Sarah J Maas
That is exciting if you read book three. Really! Yep went and got it. Sure, it’s a 10 dollar book, but it’s the size of three books! Seriously, 12072 locations, whatever that means in Kindle Speak. Also, it’s good.
Oh and I read my husband’s secret and it was super angsty and twisty! There are lots of turns and characters but for the life of me I don’t know why I gave it 4 stars????
Oh and it’s The Husband’s Secret that I read by Liane Moriarty
Happy early birthday Jean! Enjoy your vacation and the boat!
First line Thursday: “I don’t use an alarm clock.” Sustained by Emma Chase.
Jean have a happy, happy birthday tomorrow! Enjoy your vaca.
Thanks Tessa, Anne and Fabi!
That’s right Ela “The” Husband’s Secret… “my” husband better but have a secret! I’ll kill him! Lol!
LOL Jean! You’re husband’s secret better be along the way of “honey I got you a new car for your birthday, the one you always wanted, and no I paid for it all with my secret savings” or “honey here are those diamond 4 carat studs you always wanted, yep I saved for those too” or “honey I got you that perfect BBF (insert favorite actor/model) for the night and no I’m not jealous cause I know you love only me”…. Are those about right??? Or am I projecting???? Hmmmmmmmmm
Happy birthday Jean!
Tessa, yes I’ve read both and both were great. Did you read Maas other book- a court of thorns and roses? AMAZING!
And it’s more urban fantasy but Kate Daniels is my favorite!
Kate Daniels is beyond great. I read Court of Thorn and Roses. That’s what got me into reading these in the first place. Someone read it and recommended it, and I went back to Throne of Glass, then read everything by her. Have you seen the blurb for The Affiliate by KA Linde? I’m going to guinea big that one. 😀
guinea pig, not big. :/
No- going to check it out right now!!
Did you read burn for me by Ilona? Also amazing!!
Just added the ascension to my tbr! Sorry for any spelling crazies because I’m on my phone. I hope it’s at least half as good as it sounds. I’m so intrigued! Thank you.
You’re welcome. Yep, I read Burn for You too. 🙂 I’ve been on a fantasy/ PNR kick lately.
Same here. Someone else recommended red queen so I might try that after QoS.
Thanks Ash!
Omg Ela! That is hysterical! And exactly right!
Red Queen was good! I got that from the library and devoured it. The next one out this month is a prequel, and I’m a little nervous about reading it. It’ll probably be extremely sad.
I love KA Books. Mystery Man & Motorcycle Man & Lady Luck some of my all time favs!!! The whole Unfinished Hero Series was awesome too!! Every one of her books I have enjoyed and still remember them. You know sometimes you read a book and then you’re like I read that book but I can’t remember what it was about. Not with KA and Katie Evans, and the list goes on and on!! So excited that the next book in The Hacker Series is coming out September 15!!! Ok even though these books were not on the current list I have to highly recommend them Kaleidoscope Hearts by Claire Contreras, Easy Virtue by Mia Asher a CH though & Diamonds & Gold by KA Linde. Could not put any of these down!! My hubby says I have a problem I`m addicted to reading!! Oh yea when you just have to find out what happens next and can`t stop until you do!!! I admit it!!
Ladies!! Check this out:
https://www.amazon.com/Rook-Ronin-Complete-Seven-Book-ebook/dp/B014KC1M3W/ref=sr_1_1?s=digital-text&ie=UTF8&qid=1441323538&sr=1-1&keywords=rook+and+ronin+series
I’m pretty sure today is the last day before the bundle is deleted from Amazon. Click! I don’t care that I already have three of the books, and I don’t care that I’m falling for a marketing ploy…that is a GOOD freaking deal!!! 😀
Forgot to ask with all my ramblings. Can you read Hold On as a standalone?
“My hubby says I have a problem I`m addicted to reading!!” <—— *snort* That "problem" is our common denominator around here…you're in like company! Good to know about Kaleidoscope Hearts as I've had that on my TBR list for a while now. And Easy Virtue…can't wait for the sequel.
Tessa and Ash, is it Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard? I saw a comparison to The Selection in the blurb, and I really, really liked that series…
First line Thursday: (mine is really boring)
“I’m Stayin’.” Hold On, Kristen Ashley.
(This book is sooooo long. I forgot how long some of her books can be. I will wait to judge until I’m done. Bev, did you start it yet?)
Allison….. girl…. seriously. TRUST US! You don’t have to like paranormal to like Golden Dynasty. I avoided it for so so long because of the blurb on amazon. But seriously…. one of my favorite books ever. Outlander had her being thrown back in time. In this, she is thrown into al “alternate” universe. That’s the end of it. Everything else is just relationships and really great adventure. You MUST READ this book. Will not regret it. No one has, have they?
HAPPY BIRTHDAY, JEAN!!!!!
EAT LOTS OF CAKE!!
First line Thursday
“THIS BOOK CONTAINS MATERIAL THAT may be triggering for some readers.” The Lost by Cole McCade
Well now…if that isn’t an Intro in darkness, I don’t know what is.
And the dedication (which I guess is really the first line)
“For everyone who’s ever wanted to tear it all down……and leave it all behind.”
Nope, just not reading right now. * shrug* Everything sounds good, and is good, just not able to read past a chapter. Its me not the books. :-\
So, any early thoughts on Hold On?
I know I say it alot, but since she writes such long books I wish she’d work on her pacing. Give us a slow burn. Could you imagine if she gave us like a Kulti type slow burn, how fun.
Amy – I haven’t yet delved into M/M yet. Though I do sometimes enjoy a male point of view. When I read Monster in his Eyes, and then found out Torture to her Soul was from Naz’s POV, I was nervous. I loved Karissa so much and I thought reading his POV would ruin his mystique for me. I was so wrong. SO wrong.
Ugh, and have your read The Mad Tatter by JM Darhower? Reese – omg I loved him. He was so real. Not a billionaire. A hard worker, an artist, a dad, I even felt that through much of the book he was suffering from depression. I just loved him so damn much. The whole book is from his POV.
Also, Shay Savage does male POV so good. Surviving Raine. Just the best. Confession time – when I reread that book, I always stop JUST before the end. I don’t want to give it away for anyone who hasn’t read it. The ending is great, don’t get me wrong. But in my mind, I stop just before the end and rewrite in my mind what happens to the H/h. Sigh.
Michelle S – OK you are making me think on it. I swear though I get to the blurb and I’m like “No can do.” Maybe I’ll try the sample. 🙂
I still think you all should be reading Sweet Dreams!!! Mood or no.
If that had been for WiR, i would of been like bring it. Right now lol. And it’s Sweet Dreams, not like a horrible trade.
Bev – early thoughts on Hold On. Okay… well. Slow burn… should be, right? With 600 bazillion pages, why rush things? But… these two have been “friends” for YEARS. Ok, good so far. He’s still pining over ex. They hook up. Uh oh. And the, in true KA male fashion, he is suddenly her uber alpha protector, loves her kid, starts ordering her around, calling her pet name, and calling in “markers” left and right. WHAT? We got all the time in the world, why is he NOW seeing her this way? Huh? And she is not having it (even though she is dopey in love with him). So…. we’ll see. He’s unrealistically protective over a girl he didn’t consider before? WHY?
MichelleS, you sound a little frustrated. KA books can sometimes have that effect on me too.
Thanks bev! And thanks Amy, I got that R&R bundle even though I had the first 3 too. Just the threat that it would disappear on Amazon had me twitchy! Lol!
Fabi, you have to keep me updated on your book!
Hey Amy, see what book Allison mentioned…..Surviving Raine…..just sayin’…..hahaha! We love that book here Allison!
Frustrating, yes. Because I’m such a fan. And it’s not like we followed this couple through all the previous books for a great build up. And she comes up with these really great concepts. She just resolves them so fast.
Like him hung up on an ex, her in love for years with him. Could be cool to see her decide to woo him and watch him fall. Or the classic doesn’t know what he has until he will lose it. When all see but him that he is in an emotional relationship with her. IDK.
Jean – yeah I may have noticed. LOL
But I can never remember who has read it and who hasn’t. Glad to know I just sang its praises to someone who hasn’t.
Love that book so much it hurts.
I found a movie based on a book I read, does this count?
Easy Virtue- when is the sequel ever being released?
Allison, I feel the same about KA books and Golden Dynasty- that blurb.
Allison, did you read the sequel to SR. Amy read SR recently.
Jean, I will. I haven’t had time to get past the warning and my holiday weekend is going to be spent scrambling to catch up on school work for a meeting with the Dean on Tuesday.
Bev, nope, not in the least. (hahaha kidding)
Definitely do not read GD if it will be a trigger.
If worried because it is fantasy, don’t be.
Fabi, I know.
Bev sad bev not reading.
Fabi – I have not. Mainly because I have rewritten an entirely different ending for Raine and Bastian. LOL in my mind they are in one particular place for all their lives. Queen of denial right here.
Have you read it? What did you think of it?
Amy, yes, that Red Queen. I read The Selection, and this was way better. That’s an odd comparison, actually. The only similarities is they are dystopian, and marriage is mentioned, though, not even in the same way. The book had magic, segregation issues, awesome character, betrayals, rebellion, just all sorts of gut punching goodies.
Allison, I loved Mad Tatter. I’m like Amy. Male POV is usually so blah compared to female POV. However, Mad Tatter was the ultimate sweet. I felt so much and rooted for him big time. Though, let’s be honest. His daughter is the one who stole my heart. 🙂
Bev, depends on the book/ movie. 😛 Fabi, that’s your first line? 0.0
Me too… I much prefer just heroine POV…
I’ve loved books with both POV’s and of course Shay Savage’s male POV’s but if I can have my choice, I want to wonder, just like “she” does.
Allison, you never know, the sequel may be exactly as you’re imagining it. I’ll never tell. 😉
Uh, yeah Tessa, I think I’m heading into dark waters. That is, if I ever have time to read again. So jealous of y’all right now.
And here I am, playing opposite again. I love finding romance books with male POV. I’m always fascinated by how the male mind is portrayed in “our” books.
Hey guys, it wasn’t long ago that some of us were complaining about an over the top dark book that didn’t have enough warning. I have to share the whole warning in The Lost with y’all because I just got chills reading it.
—————-from The Lost—————TRIGGER WARNING: A WORD FROM THE AUTHOR
THIS BOOK CONTAINS MATERIAL THAT may be triggering for some readers. That’s it. Plain and simple. There are topics in this story, graphically depicted scenes, that may be titillating to some and may be deeply harmful to others, when they detail emotional, physical, and sexual abuse, domestic violence, non-consent, and incest in both a fantasy context and as traumatic events with very real repercussions. I make no excuses for that. It is what it is, and I acknowledge it; I also acknowledge the dysfunction of many of the relationships in this book, and would never want anyone to see them as a model for a relationship or an attempt to normalize, trivialize, or glamorize acts that can be deeply scarring and extremely dangerous to people in real life. Let this be your trigger warning. This story will not be a comfortable read. If there are scenes you can’t read because they trigger you or make you uncomfortable, that’s okay. Stop reading. Skip ahead, skip back, close the book; do whatever you need to do. You have the right to not be exposed to things that hurt you— and to not be judged for that, or have your feelings dismissed because “it’s just a story, just a fantasy.” Someone else’s personal fantasy may well be your personal nightmare. If scenes in this book are hurtful to you, I’m sorry for that. And I respect that, and respect your right to walk away. Self-care is important, always. Be good to yourselves.
——————————————
I just love this author.
*gasp* That is beyond awesome. I wish every author would give that type of warning. I’ll say this, though one of my triggers is in there, it makes me want to find other stuff by the author. Any book with that type of warning probably has warning on her other books, making one feel safe if their trigger isn’t mentioned. 🙂
What’s the author’s name?
Fabi –
Holy crap on two different crackers.
First, because now you have me intrigued about Book 2. So just went on Amazon and it is available as a bundle with SR through Kindle Unlimited. I am ON it. It’s next up on my TBR.
Second, because who is the author of The Lost? This sounds straight up my alley. As if it pitched a tent in my alley and is living there right now like a transient, huddled over a garbage can fire. That’s how up my alley it is.
Found it! I admit, I was being lazy. Now I’m lost in his blog. Cole McCade
Fabi, you confuse me, lol. This & that Anna one, but Asking for it & The Siren(haven’t read) you don’t do. But these last two are where the heroine has the control, really. Oh, is that the distinction? You don’t like it if it’s what they like?
Hahaha Allison. That’s hilarious.
The author is Cole McCade. He wrote one other book before this one called Second Chance at Paris. It’s a second chance romance read. Beautifully written. Several of us here read and lived it. I’m a huge fan of this author’s writing talent.
The Lost just came out this week and I believe it’s the first dark novel he’s published. Although, I do believe he had a story in an anthology with other authors.
But, really, don’t y’all agree that warning should stand as a template for all authors of dark romance? I think it is so perfect and perfectly said.
I’m with you Habit. I love both POV….or even an epilogue in the mal
Alright, now crushing on this Cole guy just based on his blog. He sounds awesome. Though, he wins based on that warning alone, the blog is great.
Whoops….my phone is having a seizure….I’ll start the post again.
Im with you Fabi. Love a male POV even if its an epilogue like in 50.
AND Holy Moly that warning sounds terrifying….I wouldn’t be brave enough to read it. In fact that warning is a trigger for me.*gulp*
Hmmm Bev, my trigger is a little hard to explain and certainly nothing an author could warn about. It’s not straightforward like incest or domestic violence, etc. It’s more of a character development issue.
Let’s see if I can explain a little. In The Siren, there was a scene where she went back to her ex (willingly and knowingly) and ended up in the hospital for it. She was OK with that. It was perfectly fine with her. I finished that book, but that scene soured it for me and I refused to continue the series about that character.
Another I read recently, which I dnf’d was Lips Like Ice. I got to a scene where out of loneliness, in spite of horrific prior abuse, she goes to sit, willingly and without even being asked, at her masters feet, to be petted like a dog. —I stopped reading at that point.
So, my trigger isn’t really a physical situation, its a character portrayed as “giving up” or “giving in”. Especially if the character is female — BOOM there goes my trigger.
You know I always look for strong h characters anyways. But when I read a book with situations similar to those above, its my achelles heel. Can not handle it.
I even read the occasional BDSM book. But I prefer FemDom books in that genre. Although honestly, those type of books bore me a bit.
*read all you never wanted to know about Fabi* hahaha
I’m with you on your triggers, Fabi.
But I include the physical altercation in there, too. There are a few that had very specific detailing in the abusive scenes, and I just…can’t. There are male character “bad guys” that many readers have ended up loving… (due to redeeming qualities later, or “reasons”). And while I get that they may feel that way, I just can’t. I may have enjoyed the story as a whole, but cannot look at the guy in any other way other than disgust and fear.
Oh Tessa, no no no no no. C is MY crush! Who needs movie stars when there are authors like Cole McCade? (not his real name)
When you’re in the mood for a sweet second chance romance read, try Second Chance at Paris. His writing is top notch.
Fabi, that helps a lot with figuring out books to recommend. 🙂 I’m willing to try Second Chance. I just can’t on The Lost. *sighs* We should have a post on triggers. Some of us have some, and a few don’t. Some have “typical” ones, some of us, they aren’t as obvious.
*gasps* Jean! I read SR! See? Fabi remembered. THANK you, Fabi. You must have been in such a thick book fog from SGT, Jean, that you missed it. 😛
That warning was straightforward and profoundly sensitive to readers who may have triggers. What an awesome author.
And back to the male-only POV…I may not care for it but I have to say that Transcendence was absolutely perfect being in his POV. It just would not have been the same in her POV. So, yeah…exception and all that. 😉
I know you read it Amy! I was just messing with you!
I loved Last Chance in Paris by Cole Mccade and I’m not sure many of you read it here. Fabi recommended it to me and it was amazing! Highly recommend!
And…I’m with YOU on that. I’m not big on redemption. :-/
Slammer by Tabatha Vargo is only 99 cents right now.
Redemption from hitting someone you love? Now I’m curious as to what book. Usually hitting would be reason to leave the guy.
Well.. perfect example would be “Consequences” by Aleatha Romig. Although it was a dark read/kidnap book but by the time he hits her I think they were in a relationship… married? It’s been a couple of years (and that was book #1). There were 2 more after it, and SO many loved Tony like crazy. I enjoyed the books but Tony will NEVER be someone I can love.
Oooh, I get that. Yeah, Tony is not someone to love. I thought about it, and Fear Me’s Kellan is in that category. Sorry, just not going to fall for that guy. Even after book two, he scares me. I still adored the books, though.
Such a great conversation. I just finished the 3 book in Tillie Coles Hades Hangman series and man alive did that touch on some very, very touchy and gut wrenching topics. I don’t want to drop any spoilers but holy cow it really made my stomach turn. Don’t get me wrong, I loved this series & I fell for 3 totally different guys but what a whirlwind. I loved reading ‘Flames’ books (#3) and I’m still reeling from the delicate nature and the powerful outcome. WOW! Has anyone else read this series yet? Did you get the same feelings…?
Teri, I loved the Hades Hangmen series! Especially Flame’s story!
Just started The Husband’s Secret today and am loving it so far! Not sure where is going…..
Whoa…that Cole McCade sounds right up my alley . maybe if I sell some of this crap at my yard sale I can get his books LOL!
I will read anything. Love the dark books… The ones that make me squee… The ones that make me cry on throw things. I just need to be engaged… Once I’m hooked, I usually am hooked. (With one notable recent exception… Kiera bugged the crap out of me…so no matter how much I adored Kellan Kyle…I dnf Effortless.
Grey I’m glad I’m not the only one… I would have liked that so much better if she had been a stronger character or just had some more spice to her…
Jean… oh yes, I’m still a little hot over those books :-)))
Aw man, my heart is all swoled up now.
*snuggles into Maryse to cover blushing cheeks*
*muffled on her shoulder* Luffs ya. 😉
I’m with you guys on the hitting triggers. Y’all already know how I end up not being able to stand the H if he cheats, but physical violence toward the h by the H is a no-go for me as well. He may try to redeem himself, but for me it is only to an extent and I’ll never see him the same again. 😕
I’m trying to remember any books I’ve read where that became an issue…
