I was going to start Ricochet (and I still will soon, especially after Jean’s reaction) but Roomhate and The Lie are just too tempting. A Love So Tragic sounds crazy good as well, but it’s by an author I’m not familiar with while I already *know* Penelope Ward and Karina Halle books are just bundles of awesomeness. Sooooo it’s either living with a guy who hates her ’cause she broke his heart or a lost love that’s probably going to make my heart ache…The Lie it is!!! 😀

I am not sure I know the reasoning. In Europe I believe it was for political alliance and to keep the bloodlines royal.
I’m not sure about Cleopatra (wouldn’t doubt it though) but I had read that King Tut was believed to be the product of a brother and sister and that it was a common occurrence at that time in Egypt. It was for the same reason as in Europe, to keep the royal bloodline pure.
It’s not just allowed in the UK. It’s also mostly allowed in the US
“First cousin marriage is allowed without restriction in 19 states, and with some restrictions in AZ, IL, IN, ME, UT, WI and NC (in North Carolina, while first cousins may marry, “double cousins” may not”
And as far as the ick factor, I think that mostly depends on whether the kids were raised closely together. It might even be icky with no blood relation at all if the two people were raised as adopted siblings. Definitely not a genre I read a lot of. I thought it was very clever the way it worked in TLHG. You know if I had not seen it labeled as scifi I would of just thought fantasy and I probably have done that more than I think.
