Okay this reader question has just already been guessed, but the book sounded SO DARN gooooood that I had to post it, in case anyone wanted to read it, too! 😀
Now, at first I was thinking it might be Hard Time by Cara Mckenna (4.5 STAR loved it – she’s a librarian teaching in a prison and falling for an inmate – and here’s my review) but that’s pretty much where things change from Kari’s description.

OK Maryse, I need HELP. I read a book a couple years ago and I cannot for the life of me remember the name/author.
It’s about a woman who hits a rough patch at her firm and has to volunteer at the prison teaching in the library. She meets a man (I THINK his name might be Gray or Grayson) who is in for embezzlement and she falls for him until she sees a list with a visitor who it says is his wife so she cuts him off.

He gets out and comes to her firm, requesting she represent his new venture and her boss insists.
He explains that the “wife” was kind of a favor and he was in prison because his partner in business framed him.

The partner (maybe Max???) turns out to be a woman and the wife. She comes back to tell him they have a child and she is dying of cancer.
