Apple iPad Tablet (64GB, Wifi + 3G)
My sweet sweet husband…the techie. Just dying for an excuse to buy the latest and greatest. Each time we’d stop in an electronics store, there’d always be the obligatory iPad touching, and his trying to convince me of how badly we needed one – that somehow, it MUST have something that would make our lives easier, right?
So this weekend (while yet again, on another business trip), Β he asked me what I wanted for my birthday (and my answer is usually, oh I dunno…books, or anything to do with books), I shrugged and said hrmmm…how aboutΒ an iPad? Now I wasn’t really expecting one, but I had heard good things (especially for ebook reading), so why not? What do I want for my birthday – sure – let’s go with that! Why not blow his mind a littleΒ since usually my requests are sorta lame and uninspired. LOL! I should have known my suggestion was actually the “okay – go get one” that he had been waiting for.
And he did. Within an hour of my nonchalant suggestion, I had one, complete withΒ 3G abilities,Β He even proceeded to load it up with the Kindle and Barnes and Noble readers, and purchased me some books from each that I could start reading. What an amazing business trip this turned out to be. He was especially happyΒ sinceΒ the 3G versions are out of stock everywhereΒ inΒ our area. Looks like he’d been doing his research…Why do I have a feeling this was his plan alllll along?Β Now if only I could get my Sony E-books on there too, my life would be complete! Do you even know how many Sony ebooks I’ve amassed? So until Sony makes nice, still have to use it to read what I’ve got on it. But let’s just say, I’ve got way more room to play now with my iPad.Β Β Β So far,Β despite Β my limited experience with my iPad,Β here are the most obvious “improvements”.
- It’s a full color screen (my Sony is black and white)
- It’s fairly light (roughly 1lb 9oz), while my SonyΒ Reader is just shyΒ of a pound (barely a difference in weight between the two),Β but my iPad has an amazingyΒ huge screen size that makes me feel like I’m reading nice big hard cover pages. The screen is roughly 7.75″ x 5.75″ while my Sony screen is onlyΒ about 5″ x 3.75″.
- It is backlit! No more scrambling for book light batteries, and uneven screen lighting.
- I can highlight book passagesΒ and make notes (to help with my reviews) along with bookmarksΒ while my Sony Reader would only allow me to bookmark (and I’m not sure if I mentioned this before, but it had a bad habit of rebooting on some books, deleting all the bookmarks I had saved from it). GRRRRRR!!! Hard to do reviews with no bookmarks of my favorite parts.
- I can have multiple readers in it and take advantage of multiple e-book stores sales and freebies (along with, of course, the occasionalΒ issue of a book not being available at Sony, while itΒ was availableΒ elsewhere – like Amazon). Now I’m not limited. And who likes limits? Not I!
- And of course, the iPad is pretty much like a mini laptop. All sorts of extremely usable productivity “apps” that allow for word processing, intricate to do lists and scheduling, games, videos (yeah I’ll admit it – IΒ watched the video release for Jersey Shore, Season 2 – LOL but I promise!! I did roll my eyes in exasperation many, many times). Browsing the Internet,Β full email capabilities, it wasΒ almost exactly like dragging my laptop around, but easier to carry.Β I even spent a nice evening at the hotel bar with my colleagues while we watched crazy YouTube videos like this one, and this one. Ok yeah, we think cats are funny! So will you, you’ll see (althoughΒ I think we drove the bartender crazy with the first one).
So there you have it! Here are a few pics of my own iPadΒ (below) andΒ a screen shot of the next book in my Christine Feehan “Dark Series” marathon (that one’s up at the top). Looks great doesn’t it!!!??
UPDATE: 03/18/11
OMG!! Just bought the coolest keyboard case thingie for my iPad. It literally turns it into a laptop, so now when I go on biz trips, I can blog and have fun with you guys with ease! YAY, plus all my books are in here! BEST invention ever (next to the iPad of course). It’s called the Rocketfish Ipad Keyboard Capsule. Oh and I just typed this with the new contraption!! While in my car!! Don’t worry, my husband’s driving – it’s not that smart… yetΒ π
One of my Facebook friends asked me how I liked the iPad compared to the other e-readers. Here’s what I answered:
“I LOVE IT! The most awesome thing, ever. I have access to three different readers (Kindle, Nook and iBooks), and I can read hands free now, propped up on my knees, or with a case that doubles as a stand (or this new keyboard thingie does it too). I had a Sony e-reader but the screen was small, and not color, and I needed a light for it. This is backlit so even in the dark, I’m good to go. PLUS – when I get excited about a part in a book, I can just switch to my Facebook, and *squee* and come right back to my book, without missing a beat!”

My birthday’s coming up and last year I got a kindle which goes with me everywhere. Guess what I’m asking for this year?
You lucky bug! I know your MC was just dying to buy that thing….he is a tech junkie. I love that you have the B&N thing now – I can “lend” you books! Sweet. And you know as well as I do that Jersey Shore is our guilty pleasure. I have no idea why we can’t stop watching it…..
I know mommy, right?! And!! and!! I found out Sony DOES play nice…just in a different way….
Because their books are now in EPUB format, I CAN read them on my iPad, so they are being transferred right now.
YAY ME AGAIN!!!!!
Oh my…did I just call you “mommy” in public *blush* tee hee!!!
Ohhh so THAT’S the key to staying young…hahahaha! Got it!!!
My hubby just spoiled me with the same thing…only the iPad 2. I have so many PDF books and I can access them in my cloud any time now. It was okay to read them on my iPhone before but this is sooooo much more comfortable.
Btw Maryse, I absolutely love your blog! In fact, I depend on you for release dates, updates, and I love your reviews as I find them spot on. You’re witty and oh so fun to read. So thanks because in my busy world, I don’t have the time to search for all of this info. My down-time is now just that and you don’t know just how important that is.
Your Avid Fan,
Moxie
That is awesome, I got the Nook in September and then when the Nook Color came out in December I wanted it and being that my hubby is a techie, he insisted that I had to have it. Did you know you can hook it up to the library and borrow books? It is great for older books, since I am in a small suburb, my library has not invested a whole lot into digital media. I am so the type of person (being that my hubby is too) to have all the different tablets, good to hear that you are enjoying it!
techie husbands are quite fun! We get to play with all of the coolest gadgets!! My friends Nook broke twice though (once the buttons cracked, and another time everything froze on her screen – even with the battery removed…), so she is contemplating something else.
Maryse, I have just found your website. And of course I am reading it on my IPad2. I look forward to referring to it for my reading in the future. I went so far as to put a link on my home screen.
Hi Beth!! Thanks so much for taking the time to let me know π iPads rock, don’t they? I can’t read on anything else now…
Love your blog and just ran across this post today. I also have an Ipad 2 and love love love it. I wanted to share this really nifty ebook management tool called Calibre. It organizes all of your ebooks on your computer and can even convert formats if needed. Saves space on Ipad! I get books on my computer via Kindle every now and then and can easily convert them and then email them to myself from Calibre. That way I don’t have to sinc my ipad (which can take too long). Here’s the link https://calibre-ebook.com/
Yeahhhh…my Hubby also gave me iPad (1) last Cxmas…then iPad 2 came out,…he bought mevthe white, 3G, and I gave the iPad 1 to him…HAHAHA…I agree…Tech Hubby’s are fun..Maryse…me too, loveeee my iPad, iBooks is great, easy to buy…do you love yours too? ( my kids joke I love my iPad 2 more than I love them!!! Probably true..hehehe)
Nice yakking again…sorry my blogs are longggggg….
Funny, cause that’s exatly my situation. I gave my original iPad to my husband, and I now have the iPad 2. All decked out in a nice red jacket π
Maryse…forgot…you rock! I love your blog..love your long and absolutely complete reviews of your books…it takes lots of commitment to do this!!
Thank you for your blog, and thank you for answering EVERY SINGLE ONE OF US! incredible!
Thanks!!
Thanks Bia!! I have to write the reviews to get the books off my chest. Especially the good ones. It’s therapeutic, for real! But I’m glad I have all of you guys to play along with me π
Best part of reading on IPad 2? Listening to the IPod ” reading” list that I created with fave, relaxing, cool songs…so, it’s ” moms off” with headphones and reading! Oh, and bcse I like to walk once a day, and can’t put my books down, my super creative Hubby, adapted a “safety strap” goes around my neck, with the cover, so I don’t drop it in sidewalk n break the glass! Cool idea, huh? ADVICE: ( it happened BTW, the broken glass..Apple, as a once a lifetime courtesy, replaced..pffew…it was going to be $ 450. to fix….Thank God)
Thanks, Maryse!!!!! Love ur Blog!!
Awesome idea Bia! I love to listen to music when I read! Adds feeling to the whole thing. Thank goodness Apple fixed that glass for you. I’m always afraid of that…
hey,
Trade ya… please send me a list of books my 14 yr old girl can read. She loves the Cassandra Claire books and Hunger Games type books. In return go to this link: https://www.getjar.com/mobile/134944/reader-by-sony-electronics-inc.-for-google-nexus-one/?ref=0&lvt=1324010334&sid=1noh0009hlcdp60g&c=e9o1ny8yzdvuufs523&lang=en It is a link to the android app you can put on your I-Pad to read your SONY e-books on the I-Pad. {Your Welcome :)}
LOL I have to get me a keyboard I just cant stand my nails tapping at the screen. I wanted to ask you, do you have anything covering the keyboard when you close the case? I personally wouldnt want my keyboard damaging the screen of the ipad when i close the case up. And OMG Bia has such a great idea there! I need to learn how to set up my ipod on my ipad.

Melissa I know right? The “strap” still works..lol.!never dropped again because of my dog..lol..lol..
Now, the iPads come with the iPod so I went there, “created a new list named: Reading” and it gives u the option to pick the so gs you have on your iTunes library..as many times as u want. So, when I’m reading a book, One Republic, Adele, U2, Enigma, huh..and a bunch other great indie or known bands are playing so I can relax, walk and read! Lollol . Advice: I keep on very low volume so it’s soothing and not distracting..it helps with mood of a book. Take the book “Thoughtless” and “Effortless ” for example. Loved, loved those 2 books. I imagined Kellan’s voice kind of like One Republic, so now I remenber the books evry tine I hear their song on the radio..lol..(Author responded to me that she WAS a fan and listened to One Republic, a lot while writing Kellan. That she also thinks Kellan’s voice sounds like that. How cool is that?!) I’m a dork..lol..hope you enjoy.
Have you ever used the iBook app on the iPad? I use it and I love it but I know there are books that aren’t available on it. Do I need an Amazon account to use the Kindle app?
You can use bluefire reader found at the app store to read all of your sony reader books. You upload them using drop box which is free
I love love love reading on my iPad. Sometimes there’s nothing better then curling up with an actual book, but most of my reading is done on the iPad. I do want to let you guys know about an app that you may or may not know about. It’s called OverDrive media console and you can get it free from your app store. You find your local library, add your card number and rent books for up to 21 days. I’ve done it a few times and it’s not too bad… Unless you prefer to own an actual copy. Happy reading to you all!
I have an iphone, which is just a smaller version of the ipad (Which I will get eventually!) Until recently (as in after I found your website) I haven’t been big on the ebooks.. but with all the good reads you’ve been recommending on facebook.. I can’t seem to stop myself from buying ebooks. Lol for the most part, the ones recommended are cheaper than if I were to buy the paperback (if that’s even available) Thanks so much for all of the reading! π
I get it, Judy!!! I’m having so much fun reading them, too. π I intend to keep finding us more great reads.
Hi, just wanted to jump in and say I have a Samsung galaxy, and love it soooo much! Its great for reading on, and I am a huge book lover? Love your blog by the way. Books not quite as cheap for us here in SA though. I rely a lot on free book sites.
Did you ever find a way to transfer the Sony books to the iPad???
I also use the kobo app on my iPad. Much prefer it over my Sony.
Thanks Sherri
I have an iPad I got from my brother because he wanted to upgrade to an iPad 2 & I wanted to change from my nook. Now unfortunately I know how good the iPad 2 is and I want one of those now, cause I want all the extras that came with it. But your totally right it’s soooo much better (the iPad) than anything else. I luuuuve it!!! I also love your site Maryse, i agree with Moxie Pepperpot about how important your site is to us especially to me. Lots of love to you & Thanks for all the work you do!!! Take Care.
I have an iPad too and absolutely love it! I’m still trying to get books put on it though
I love mine! I can keep my iBooks clear while storing them in the Dropbox App so I can share my books by emailing their Dropbox file! Can’t do it in iBooks. So I read them on iBooks but access them through Dropbox!
Hi Maryse, thanks for an awesome blog! We have very similar taste…if you’re squeeing about a new book, I just know that I will love it too;). Are you still reading on your iPad? How do you keep track of everything in your Kindle app? I have asked them a couple of times if they can add categories/folder capabilities into the app….I need a TBR folder, and a vampire folder, and a 5 star favourites folder and…and…!!
Keep up all the awesome recommendations;) Thanks, Tezz
FYI. Sony now has an app in AppStore. I downloaded it in either dec or jan. Just search Sony reader in store.
