Love your website!
The Bandit Queens is a book debut by Parini Shroff.
It’s about a young Indian woman who lives in a rural village and finds the false rumors that she killed her abusive husband surprisingly useful, until other women in the village start asking for her help getting rid of their own abusive husbands.
It’s filled with clever criminals, second chances, and wry, strong, witty women.
It is a deeply human book with a darkly hilarious take on gossip, caste, truth, justice/injustice, misogyny, abuse village life, and the patriarchy. It also is interwoven with the true story of Phoolan Devi, the real Bandit Queen, who after suffering horrendous abuse gets even with her abusers, and ultimately elected to Parliament.
I think it is an amazing book even more so because it’s her first effort. I realize you get inundated with book recommendations, but this one is really special.
Another amazing first novel about India during the Partition is out… The Moth by Melody Razak…I couldn’t put it down.
