Oh here’s one of my favorite genres! I received this question twice in one day, so I thought I’d post one (and my response) and maybe gather a list of more favorites from our fellow readers!
Jenn:Β Do you happen to have a list of dark reads you would recommend?
Maryse: Hi Jenn! I have a few!!
- My Top 10 Dark Reads
- My Top 13 Most Illicit Bad Boys
- Recommended Psychological Thriller Books
- AND the entire “Dark Reads” category on the blog (that has our favorites lists, recommended series, reader questions, and more of my reviews – pretty much everything I’ve categorized as “dark reads” π )
Jen: Oh super thank you so much I’ll check them out. I usually don’t go for the genre but I’m in a mood for it
Maryse: Some of my favorite reads that I’m so OFTEN in the mood for is a good dark read!!! YAY!!! Oh you’ll find something for SURE out of those lists. These are my favorites!!
P.S. I have two more that I want to add to the Psych-thriller list (a few newer ones that were just awesome). In fact, I may have to make a new Top 10 list (part two), very soon. LOL!
- Book Review β Behind Closed Doors by B.A. Paris
- Book Review β Ricochet by Keri Lake
- Book Review β Marrow by Tarryn Fisher
- Book Review β Dangerous Girls by Abigail Haas
- Book Review β Room by Emma DonoghueΒ <— Half psych-thriller/half heartwarming and profound.
Okay, so who’s read an awesome dark read, dark romance read, or psych thriller lately (or long ago) that you’d absolutely recommend?

Welllllll, I WAS going to say The Tied Man and Her Master’s Courtesan, but Ela beat me to it. So, what she said. *points to Ela’s list* All of ’em.
I’ll add the Monsters In the Dark series by Pepper Winters…more on the “light” side of dark but I really liked all of them. π
And I believe anything by Kitty Thomas is dark (someone correct me if I’m wrong), although I’ve personally only read The Last Girl.
Agreed, Amy. Kitty Thomas is one of the more “darker” read authors
Definitely the Indebted series by Pepper Winters. That series gutted me! I would also recommend (along with the above-mentioned books), the Twist Me series by Anna Zaires. LOVED IT! Kidnapped girl taken to an island and falls for her twisted captor? Yes please!
Lana Grayson’s Legacy Series
I didn’t mention Kitty Thomas since she’s not one of my fave or even go to “dark” authors. The couple of books I read by her were a total WTH is wrong I didn’t care for books.
Lips Like Ice
Tied Man
Life of Anna series
Anything by RLee Smith
Mud Vein
