HAPPY FRIDAY FINDS DAY!!! On this list, we have WAY more recommendations and bargain finds, than new releases, so consider this a “tried-and-true” reader recommendations list!!! Everything from laugh-out-loud funny books finds, to angst, to bad boys, to emotionally enlightening reads, to awesome-sounding M/M romances that are making some of our fellow readers FREAK OUT in delight!!!
I’m reading one too, in fact. 😉 The Evolution of Ivy: Poison is a sort of “psych-thriller” or “thriller-romance” or “psych-romance”. Not sure yet, ’cause I’m only in the second half and this one could go ANY way, in fact, I suddenly sense a shift in direction that I am thoroughly enjoying. But to give you an idea, … STALKER ALERT!!! She’s been in love with him all her life, and he’s now marrying someone else. So she changes everything about herself, sets her plan in motion and intends to get him back ANY. WAY. SHE. CAN. And oh my, am I enjoying the crazy. 😉
Now… take a look at what else we found! (NOTE: some are bargain priced when I added them, but prices can change on Amazon, so make sure to check before you finalize your order. Sales listed are for Amazon U.S., however some of the Amazon UK links also reflect the sale!):
- A Thousand Letters by Staci Hart <— STACI HART’S LATEST IS LIVE!!!! This one was on my news post a few days ago!! Unrequited love and a second chance romance… “One regretted decision sent him away. One painful journey brought him back to me. I only wish I could keep him.*A contemporary romance inspired by Jane Austen’s Persuasion*”
Fake Fiancée by Ilsa Madden-Mills <— FOOTBALL STAR NEEDS A FIANCEE ALERT!! And everyone seems to be going crazy for it, ’cause the reviews are AMAZING!!! YAY US!!
Jean: I’m 40% into Fake Fiancee and omg, it’s GREAT! The cover is totally deceiving because this book is reminding me of the Off Campus series by Elle Kennedy! The same feels! Loving it!!!!!
Tessa: I did love this book. I know Jean was swoony over it too. It’s just such a good read.
Jen: Reading this right now and really enjoying it. And yeah… cover model is gorgeous! Haha.
Jean: Love this cover and yes, I LOVED, LOVED, LOVED THE BOOK!
- Surrendering by Michelle Horst <— LIVE!!! Nancy found us this one, since she loved another book (Predator) by this author!
- The Gender Game 4: The Gender War by Bella Forrest <— LIVE TECHNO THRILLER ALERT!!!
If Ever I Fall by S.D. Robertson <— LIVE!!! EVERYTHING IS FALLING APART ALERT! I’m not really are about this blurb. Sounds heart wrenching and features three people at a crossroads and struggling to overcome, but I’m not sure if they’re strangers or connected or what? Anyway, could be awesome.
- The Story of Us by D. Nichole King <— LIVE!!! SOUNDS HEARTWRENCHING ALERT!! She’s not ready for them to end, but it may not be in her hands anymore… “Now my husband, my everything is battling for each breath, and all I can do is stare at the machines as the clock ticks off precious minutes. The doctors said the first twenty-four hours are critical—but every moment is critical. You never know which will be your last...”
- Wilder (The Renegades) by Rebecca Yarros <— HE WANTS HIS TUTOR ALERT!! And it’s super-bargain priced today (and has great reviews!) “My new tutor is sexy, smart, more stubborn than I am, and one hundred percent off limits. That’s right–the only rule this semester is “don’t touch the tutor.” For the first time in my life, I want someone I can’t have. She’s the girl who obeys every rule. I’m the guy who breaks them.”
Jacie: This book was AMAZING, but Rebecca’s books always are. I’ve been (im)patiently waiting for the next in this series and we’re just a few days out!
Sexy Bad Neighbor (Sexy Bad Series Book 1) by Misti Murphy <— LIVE!!! NEIGHBOR PRANK WAR ALERT!! “A war that could damn well involve two hearts and a plan. Her plan doesn’t involve falling in love. His life doesn’t involve plans. This could be a problem...”
- Charley Davidson series by Darynda Jones <— HILARIOUS & SEXY PARANORMAL SERIES ALERT!!! Back on the list ’cause Cristina and I both leaped on the huge Darynda Jones sale from a week or so ago, and now SHE is marathon reading her heart out!!
Cristina: I’m knee deep in the Charley Davidson series right now by Darynda Jones. I just finished book seven today. I haven’t been able to step away from it yet! LOVE IT!!!! I have laughed the whole way through!! Romance, great characters, AND fantastic plots in each book which is tied to an even bigger plot! I’m on a roll!!!!
- Never Let You Go (a modern fairytale) by Katy Regnery <— SHE ESCAPES HER KIDNAPPER BUT HER FOSTER BROTHER IS LEFT BEHIND… WOW THIS BLURB SOUNDS AMAZING!!!! Nancy also found us this super-sale!!”...thirteen-year-old foster children Griselda and Holden escape from their abductor after three years of brutal captivity, and try to cross the Shenandoah River on foot. Tragically, one of them makes it to safety, but the other is left behind. Ten years later, Griselda’s boyfriend drags her to a fight club grudge match, and her world is turned upside down when she watches Holden step into the ring…
Nancy: NEVER LET YOU GO by Katy Regnery is on sale …This was on my Best of 2015 list.
Lauren: Never Let You Go is one of my favorite books of 2015. I’ve already re-read it a few times.
MichelleS: I just read never Let You Go. I won’t forget it, that’s for sure. Very cool retelling of Hansel and Gretel – what if two kids got “taken” and then formed a bond? Yup. Pretty cool.
Jean: Been reading a great book all day! Never let You Go by Kate Regnery!!!! So, so great! Can’t put it down! I am so impressed with this author and loved Vixen and the Vet!
Making Faces by Amy Harmon <— SCARRED & RECLUSIVE AWESOME AMY HARMON BOOK ALERT!!! He’s scarred and reclusive and she befriends him. This is one of my 5-star favorites from a few years back and it’s super-bargain priced today!!! And here’s my review.
Jennifer: Read this a few yrs ago, great book!!!!
Vivian: This book gives me life.
- Boxed Set: The King Trilogy by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff <— HE HAS THAT “BARRONS-FEEL” ALERT!! And this is a THREE BOOK SUPER-BARGAIN BUNDLE! And this series is now complete with the recent release of #5!
Lisa: Maryse, had to drop you a note about the King Trilogy by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. Whoa, not what I expected SO much better. eep! If your in the mood for fun paranormal read this is it! King is on of my favorite dark characters.
Tracey: …really good read reminded me a bit of Karen Marie Moning Fever series…
Tessa: King has totally made me squirrel! Serious “Barron” feeling. I’m only on the first one but definite Hot!!!
Open House by TC Matson <— SHE’S LONELY IN HER LONG TERMM RELATIONSHIP & THEN SHE MEETS HER SON’S TEACHER ALERT!! Recently released but back on the list ’cause I just got great feedback on it!! “...Knowing all relationships face difficult obstacles, she turns a blind eye and blames the lure on the lack of attention and fights even harder to fix her broken relationship. And then it happens… Brian presents an inconceivable challenge, derailing Riley and forcing new beginnings for everyone…“
Marion: I’m in love with this story!!!!! 5 beautiful stars
- Worth It by CM Owens and SM Shade <— THIS IS GASP-FOR-AIR FUNNY ALERT!!!! Maria recommends this one!
Maria: Worth It by CM Owens and SM Shade is one of the funniest books I’ve ever read. I was reading excerpts to my husband between gasping for air and hysterical laughing fits.
The Monday Girl (The Girl Duet Book 1) & The Someday Girl (The Girl Duet Book 2) by Julie Johnson <— FAMOUS ACTOR & UNKNOWN GIRL ALERT!!! The “duet” is complete and Cheryl LOVED IT!!!
Cheryl: I just finished the Girl Duet by Julie Johnson. I LOVED it and towards the end really tried to slow down because I didn’t want it to end. I laughed, cried, my heart hurt and I yelled in frustration at my kindle. It was a wonderful read that I hope the author continues in some way with a new story about one of the supporting characters. If you read it, you’ll know who I am talking about-just broke my heart and I hope their heart can get mended and it wouldn’t hurt to read more about the MC’s from the duet too. *sigh*
Always: A Novel by Sarah Jio <— HOMELESS MAN WAS ONE HER SOULMATE ALERT!! THIS ONE MADE LISA “SPILL HER FEELZ”!!! Recent release and it’s back on the list ’cause that blurb caught my attention BIG time, and even more so when Lisa recommended it!
Lisa: “I read an ARC of Always by Sarah Jio (she runs into her former love who is now a homeless man with some serious mental issues…but they still have a bond/connection that she tries to reach out to him through). I thought it was a 4.5 read in case that trips anyone’s trigger. Gaahhhhh…I think I just spilled feelz all over myself remembering it!!”
The Language of Flowers: A Novel by Vanessa Diffenbaugh <— RAISED IN THE FOSTER SYSTEM, RECLUSIVE & SHE’S GOT NOWHERE TO GO NOW... “…Now eighteen and emancipated from the system with nowhere to go, Victoria realizes she has a gift for helping others through the flowers she chooses for them. But an unexpected encounter with a mysterious stranger has her questioning what’s been missing in her life…” AND!! It’s on SUPER-SALE & Tasha recommends it!!!
Tasha: The Language of Flowers by Vanessa Diffenbaugh is on sale… today! I read this one a couple years ago and raved about it. It’s a beautifully written story about a foster child, now a woman, who had a rough start in life and her gift with the meanings of flowers and how she touches other’s lives in that way.
- Wintersong: A Novel by S. Jae-Jones <— DARK FANTASY ROMANCE ALERT!!! And it just went live this week and now back on the list ’cause Tessa enjoyed it!!
Tessa: I finished Wintersong. I couldn’t stop reading it. … Wintersong was emotional for me. The writing was beautiful, and I really enjoyed how emotions and personality were shown through music. Truly, different and beautiful.”
bev: I read a review that described the writing as “lush” and I think I agree with that.
Bitter Legacy by Dal Maclean <— M/M ROMANCE ANGST ALERT!!! Fabi LOST HER MIND OVER THIS ONE!! It’s one of bev’s favorites, too!!!
bev: Just finished Bitter Legacy which I really enjoyed. Going to be hard to leave those characters. …I need someone to read this, but you have to like M/M, mystery, and some emotional angst.
Fabi: bev bev! bev!!! I’m at **% of Bitter Legacy and I’m dying !!! OMG I knew it I knew it I …didn’t want to know it. aaahhhhhhhh! I can’t think, I can’t work, I can’t breath – I just have to read read read to see how it ends. Whaaaaaa!
Fabi: Thank you so very much for recommending and loaning me this book. Easily the best I’ve read so far this year. I meant to make it last until Friday, but I got caught up in it this morning and haven’t been able to stop reading all day. I’ve done nothing else! WOW!!! What a ride!
- Borrowing Blue: A Made Marian Novel by Lucy Lennox <— LAUGH-OUT-LOUD M/M ROMANCE ALERT!!! Here’s another one, and Kathy is LOVING IT!!
Kathy: Maryse, if you ever add to your M/M list, I am reading Borrowing Blue by Lucy Lennox. I am over 60% and I love it! I have laughed out loud more than a few times and there are such sweet moments too. This is the first book in a 4 book series and I am definitely going to read the rest. Bonus, it is free on KU.

HA!
Read never Let You Go a year ago – and I still remember it – so, yes, it’s worth a read!!
I’m reading Bossman, by Vi Keeland, right now – so sexy and flirty – he’s so delicious, and has the best sense of humor – which is ANOTHER catnip for me. A sexy funny guy? Oh yes!
And then, after that, she doesn’t know it but MichelleS will be reading Archangel’s Blood. *smiles innocently*
I loved Bossman MichelleS. 5 big fat stars for me
I bought A Thousand Letters for that cover and the print marketing I keep seeing on FB. So pretty. I NEVER do that.
Oh and 50 Shades Darker? 🙁
I’m in a book rut and nothing appeals to me. This is a very sad state of affairs.
Robin? What about 50 Shades Darker?
The entire theater was LOL’ing when they should have been crying. The new director totally effed it up.
OMG this list!!! It’s full of all kinds of potential emotion and angst and heartbreak and swoon…thank you Maryse!! *big snuggle hugs*
Ladies…I’m struggling with Gann. 😕 It’s probably just my mood but every time I see how far I have to go my heart sinks. And I know how much y’all love it so I feel doubly sad! Ugh, book guilt blows…
R…I can’t go and see it. Can’t do it. I tried watching the first one at home and had secondhand embarrassment for like 90% of it. *snort*
OOH!! I meant to tell you guys…I signed up for this romance read of the month club where you get a free book every month through B&N, and I just got Katy Evans’ Ladies Man for this month. 😀
https://www.romancereadclub.com/
A couple of deals which look pretty good…Phantom Limb by Lucinda Berry is .99 and My Husband’s Wife by Amanda Prowse is .99 normally 7.69 (THAT one looks like pure heartache, maybe a bit much for ME even).
Funny 50 Shades Darker/Husband moment – I talked to my husband this morning and told him “You are lucky I’m not making you take me to see it this weekend”. His response “I’d go. The first one was pretty good. But I hear this one is just gratuitous sex”. Seriously WTF? Who am I married to, an 80 year old man? Next thing out of his mouth will be “You kids get off my lawn”
OMG Lisa. I’m dying. 😀
LMAO Lisa!!!!!!!!!!
I have to agree a lot of the scenes were funny instead of cry-worthy or sad etc. And I was disappointed with some of the cut scenes, which I found important to the whole story especially for someone who did not read the books.
I NEED AWAY FROM THE DARK SPOILERS….STAT!
We need a GR spoiler thread because I need to discuss lol.
OK, so I just read a review by a 50SD book fan who loved it, so maybe it was me. I was looking forward to 2 specific scenes and thought they butchered them so who knows. Maybe I judged the whole thing based on that. Point being, don’t listen to me. 😀
I’m assuming you want a discussion about the movie?
Yes please LOL. Just saw the thread!
Amy, what is it with Gann?
Where you at in it?
I’m at 6% and they’re still figuring things out after the wreck. It’s just moving a little too slow for me. Maybe it’s because my reading time is limited right now so I need something with a faster pace? Or maybe I’m just not in the right mood for it. *sigh* I don’t know…
Amy, that sucks… it is a little slow in the beginning but once you meet “him”, things really pick up. But, I get it….I am completely overwhelmed by my TBR list right now!
I’m reading First Grave to the Right and really loving it! I can see how Cristina up there got caught up in the whole series!
Just finished Fake Fiancée, stayed up half the night because I needed to finish! Really sweet story, definitely had that ‘Off Campus’ feel. Great read!
See I was totally sucked in by the writing from the first. Maybe it just isn’t to your taste. It definitely becomes action packed, but I wouldn’t call it a fast paced book. It takes its time.
*shrug*
I loved it so I want to be all stick with it but if it isn’t fun then don’t. It might be your Jellicoe Road.
But I’m sad so you should make it up to me…..;)
It’s not like Simon lives in RUSSIA. Remember that?
Yeah, not my Darcy.
https://mashable.com/2017/02/09/mr-darcy-pride-prejudice-looks/?utm_cid=mash-com-Tw-main-link#HgKuTy9yZkqE
Looks like an uptight GeorgeWashington!!
In the mood to read, but having trouble picking a book.
A Thousand Letters and The Story of Us sounds angsty. Read and enjoyed Fake Fiance. Sexy Bad Neighbor reminds me of the Neighbor From Hell series.
I know. Just, no.
Amy it did take a little while for me to get into Gann too, but if you can hang in there it really is so worth it. Don’t think about how long it is. Once you get sucked into the story, none of that matters.
Lisa A thank you for sharing your funny husband moment. Made my day 🙂
Bargain alert! Ruthie Knox’s Truly is priced at $0.99 AUD on amazon australia at the moment. I floved this book, and bk 2, Madly, is coming out (finally!) in March, bk 3, Completely, in June. If you haven’t read Truly, check it out. A slightly quirky and very real CR set in NYC. Can’t wait for the sequels!
Plan it for the one word title theme. It has been on my nook since it was released.
Ok I have read crown of lies Pepper Winter and I can’t wait on the next book!! Then I read between the Raindrops K. Pinson and it was kind of a Marmy. So Amy try Crown of Lies
I went to see 50SD and I loved it. Think this one is better than the first.
Hopefully we get the book from Greys POV very soon 🙂
Never Let You Go is a must read!
Soooo good
“Gratuitous sex”?? LOL!!!
I know ladies, and I’m trying to be patient with Gann (poor book, it’s not its fault :() but if I’m still feeling like this after today then I’m GBLing it and making Red Queen my February read.
Milissa…I have that one! Good to know it’s right up my reading alley. 😉
bev…when Simon visits Russia then I’ll move him up on my list. 😛
I would agree on the 50SD movie…
Gann… I’m plugging away, I’m at 9%. Location 1730 of 19907…
I just read a review of the Attar book. It is on my short tbr. It was not a positive review. It mentioned that grieving is handled in an unbelievable way. Now I’m worried.
I kinda, really dislike, when grief is handled badly.
I bought it ….so may attempt but maybe I should start with her swan book instead?
I went to theaters last year with my hubby to see the 1st 50 Shades and I liked it ok. I maybe struggled with Jamie Doran as Christian, just wasn’t a fan of his acting. But, I remember how red my face was coming out of the theaters! There were SO many people and they were all staring. Lol. I still want to watch this one, but I don’t have super high expectations and I’m waiting to rent.
I read a review like that for Mists too Bev and it made me question whether I wanted to read it or not. Though I also had no idea it was the same author of Paper Swan until you mentioned it and I really didn’t like that one, even though lots of others did.
Everybody I’ve talked to LOVED 50SD. I think maybe I didn’t because I loved 50SOG. And of course there were the martinis 😀
A friend of mine is seeing it this weekend. She’ll let me know if I liked it or not LOL.
I’ve seen some bad reviews. And like you mentioned people laughing.
I haven’t read the books or seen the movies.
Tasha, I’ll probably try just not sure if should start the Swan one first. I do like the cover and premise of the Mist one.
I don’t think the grieving was handled badly in Mists and bev, I think you will like it (too scared to say you may love it).
Ok.
My short tbr is*
The Lawrence Browne Affair by Cat Sebastian.
Dark Horse by Michelle Diener. (Feb read)
Mists of the Serengeti by Leylah Attar.
The Bear and the Nightingale by Katherine Arden.
* subject to a squirrel
What about you all? Any tbr list planned?
I’m finishing Murmuration by TJ Klune probably tonight, then Mists, then my Feb challenge read The Raven Boys, and either after that or somewhere in between I’m BR’ing Rock Bottom with Leslie. Oh and then Confess bu CoHo. Whew!
I do want to read Raven Boys too.
Also, 2 pre orders come out this month.
My next few are Fighter, Locked, Texas Pride & Hard Wired. I have The Diabolic penciled in prior to Hard Wired, but I’ll likely have to move it yet again. 🙁
I’m also interested in Raven Boys but unless I find a parallel universe I doubt I can fit it in February.
I really liked The Raven Boys. I seriously need to finish that series. Oh, and I even remember it years later!
My list is read King’s Cage, Dollar, Magnus Chase and the Hammer of Thor, the last Darkest Mind book, Days of something and Starlight (I’m at the park. I figure that was close enough), Six of Crows, and some random from the library I can’t remember.
Six of crows is being held at the library for me. 🙂
But parallel universe Fabi might not be a reader.
No short list here. My TBR is 700+ and growing. In fact, I’m adding a few more from above post!!
We gotta stockpile in case of book apocalypse right??
I’m actually reading two books right now (one ebook & one auido) and there’s nothing wrong with them but I’m having book ADD and they can’t hold my attention. I hate when that happens.
bev, every Fabi, in every universe, is a reader. I promise you. 😉
I tried the much loved Six of Crows 3-4 different times. Never could get into it.
Maybe you only read LiteRAture. That Fabi pronounces literature with heavy importance.
You have a friend Amy who only reads sweet romance (you try not to judge) and only listens to old school Taylor Swift.
You’ve just introduced her to your friend R who is an aspiring macrobiotic cookbook author.
LOL Bev!!!!!!!
Read Dark Matter
What is happening??!
It’s Fabi’s parallel universe.
You are hosting the first dinner party as you just perfected your seaweed stew. Your only problem is you have to keep your drapes shut as Jean’s, your neighbor, husband always rides his horse past shirtless.
You always smile and wave but are secretly glad that the only concern you have in your marriage is how often your husband invites his little canadian friend over for a night of D&D. Her name is Maryse she insist on being called The Wizard.
Ok, I’m done.
I do want to read that one Fabi, but right now it is on to the Lawrence Browne Affair.
What’s happening is midori martinis are goooooooood!!!!!!!!!
bev is having an affair with some guy named lawrence??
? Who is Lawrence, bev???? I’ve heard some rumours flying around.
Leslie M, your shortlist is a humongously long list. I feel your pain.
My current shortlist includes Seveneves for the Feb tbr challenge. Haven’t started it yet :/ It’s like a mountain that feels too big to climb. But once I start I know I’ll like it. I’m currently reading two series I recently started. The Virtuoso is bk 3 of a regency HR series by Grace Burrowes, and for something completely different I’m also reading Just Good Friends by Rosalind James bk 2 of a CR series set in the world of rugby players in New Zealand. LOL. My brain is spinning between the two worlds. But I think that’s just the way I like it. 😉
Alright, a book doesn’t work if you hit 26% and think, that’s it? And wish you were almost done. So, Kiss of Midnight, for now, is GBL.
Ugh! Figuring out what to read is so hard!!! Maybe we need to have each other pick for us?? Light bulb moment here! Anyone willing to look at my TBR can pick 3 books and I will chose 1 as next read. I’m not brave enough to do the random number thing and I need to have a little choice, so picking out of 3 works.
I love looking at TBRs so I’m happy to help anyone else.
I just got to finish the 2 I am currently reading.
Leslie, I can’t pick 3 for you because we tend to have opposite tastes a lot, but I’ll throw my vote in for How to Save a Life!
Leslie! We have so many books in common!
From just looking at the first 160 books on your TBR, I would pick
1. The Vixen and the Vet
2. Six of Hearts (just read the first 3 books of this series and they were amazing!)
3. Into the Light series!
Or if you are looking for a sweet show burn,
4. Wrecking Ball
One I didn’t notice on your list which I just read and LOVED, Fake Fiancee!!!!!
show=slow……. I’m obviously still waking up
Thanks guys!!! I love the recs! 🙂
Jean, funny about Fake Fiance because that one keeps popping up on my GR feed with great reviews. When I looked at blurb it sounds like same old thing I’ve read before….but it MUST be good, so I will reconsider.
R, (and anyone else) even though we don’t have same taste, I don’t mind checking out your TBR. Even if I haven’t read the book, I like checking blurbs/reviews etc. and picking what “sounds” good. Sometimes getting another person’s perspective on the hundreds of books hiding in our TBR helps.
Leslie kudos to you for sticking with books that are not engaging you. I’ve dnf’d right and left this year. In fact, the only books I’ve loved so far have been recs.
I have actually never had the problem of not knowing what to read next. My problem is that I have too many I want to read next., but something always sticks out. Like Mists. So I’m reading Raven because…challenge.
R. Are you starting Raven Boys now?
Tonight probably.
If I finish the one I’m reading today I’d be very tempted to join you. I have a couple of days before my next scheduled read (thanks Tina dnf). How do you feel about me crashing your Feb BR? :-/ LOL
Who’s Tina autocorrect???? That was supposed to be “to”. :-/
Yes!! Do it! That will motivate me!
*sighs* I’m having major book ADD, still, too. I haven’t read like anything all week really, a few pages and that’s it.
The Vixen and the Vet is free right now! It’s a pretty good read. I also picked up Switched by Elise Sax for .99, it sounds like fun right now! Romantic mysteries are a favorite of mine and I think this is a new to me author, good reviews so I’ll give it a shot!
I was like WHOA! Fabi’s calling out the author!
Awesome! I’ve been interested in it since you first mentioned it as your Feb pick. It would be a great pallette cleanser for me right now. Outside the genre I’ve been reading. Mine are all starting to feel “meh”.
Cruel and Beautiful is FREE right now. 😀 So good and SO emotional.
Penelope Ward’s new one, Mack Daddy, looks really good but the one thing stopping me from clicking it is…the cover. ENOUGH with the half-dressed guys!! I like a nice looking guy as much as the next hot-blooded female but I’m tired of every other book having one on them. And I REALLY hate when the auto updates change the book covers in my library to half nekkid guys or a movie tie-in cover.
Sorry. I’m a little cranky this morning. 😛
Scrolling through emails, and I almost forgot Big Little Lies premieres next Sunday (19th)!! I’m so looking forward to this. I don’t have cable so I’ve been thinking of how I’ll go about this. I know someone mentioned starz or something plays HBO and I thought I’d do the free trial if I have it for a week but then all the shows likely will be spaced out. So I see I have HBO now channel which will give me free trial for a month! Whooo! Since it’s like 4 episodes, I’m thinking this will be perfect.
I think book ADD has been contagious around here this week…
Tasha, is it only 4 episodes? You’ll have to fill me in on how it is compared to the book. I REALLY liked that one.
LOL R. Autocorrect was calling someone out. *secret life of autocorrect*
Amy, I was just reading the blurb on Mack Daddy. It sounds really good. I’m with you in the cover issue. So sick of seeing the half naked men for every single book. It’s almost become insulting. Like, really? I won’t read a book without a sexy, half naked man on the cover? — With all that said though, among the half naked men covers, Mack Daddy is not as OTT suggestive as most of them. He just looks like a guy hanging out. Chillin’ 😉
Mack Daddy is definitely one of the best bad-boy cover model covers…
I know, Fabi. *sigh* It’s not as obnoxious as some others. All I keep thinking is, do I want that showing up as the book I’m currently reading on GR?? Petty, right? But there it is. *snort*
Maybe I’ll stalk it for a bit to see if the cover changes. 😉
Darnit, no I double checked and it’s 7 episodes. I mean I’m happy it’s more I guess but it’ll be weekly till April 2nd which means I’ll have to pay for like a month and then cancel. So, I guess it’s not too bad. (grumbles) I will keep you updated, every Sunday! 😉 lol I can’t believe you don’t like Reese Witherspoon! Sweet Home Alabama, Legally Blonde, etc…. Or Nicole Kidman I guess I don’t remember her as much from movies, except for Paddington. LOL
You know what would have made me click Mack Daddy immediately? If the cover had been a picture from behind of the guy (fully dressed, of course) holding a little boy’s hand with the boy in his backpack and holding a lunchbox like he was ready for school. THAT would have made it an immediate click-and-read.
I’m with Amy. And I can almost guarantee I’d never pick up MD because of the cover. I just looked at my “read” list and the ONLY standard shirtless book I’ve read (that I picked) was The Deal. The few other ones on there were Fabi recs 😀 But for some reason, I’m fine with shirtless covers on MM books!
*looks at cover again*
Okay, maybe from the front ’cause he IS good lookin’. 😉 But dressed and with a little boy. Am I getting too nit-picky? Yeah, probably.
I have to agree with shirtless cover models. Even though they’re (the men) very nice to look at, I’m usually turned off by those covers anymore. I have been for a long time. Unless there’s a lot of raving about how great the book is, I generally don’t even bother reading the blurb. Also, I don’t like putting them on GR because, well I do have family for friends and while I doubt they really judge, I think they judge a little. Lol I’d rather not see sexy, erotic book covers from my Mom or my Aunt either, it’s too weird.
Tasha…I’m (obviously) easily annoyed, and RW and NK just annoy me as actresses. Put them together and I need a drink. But seriously, let me know how the book translates to screen!
*giggle* Maryse is kinda quiet around here until a bad boy cover pops up. 😛
LOL!!!
Well actually I want to let you know I’m reading an AWESOME book (not Mack Daddy yet… that’s next for me)
But I tried two different recent releases last night (one is VERY popular) and I couldn’t get into them (the writing… the inner dialogue, just TOO “light and flighty” for me) I just wasn’t hooked by either one.
But now I’m reading an ARC from Ginger Scott. AND OMG she has got to be one of THE BEST, most eloquently deep, yet totally awesome-to-read writers ever. It’s called “A Boy Like You” and it’s coming out this month I think and it’s just SO good.
P.S. But Aaaaaaammmyyyyy he’s HOT. Come on. LOOK AT HIM. LOOK. AT. HIM.
Will ya just?
You know, at this point, if any rl friends on GR actually looked at it and saw my books, they’d just roll their eyes. I’d love a little kid on the cover, and a shirt, but let’s be honest. There are so many who do love shirtless pics that they probably won’t ever go away.
I was in an odd mood yesterday. Nothing sounded good, even the book that I knew I’d normally love. I ended up becoming fascinated by reruns of Chopped. Today, trying Rick Riordan’s Hammer of Thor. *crosses fingers*
Agree on the book cover. I’m trying to look past it and pretend it doesn’t exist.
Just finished Closer Home. Melancholy. That’s the emotion I’m feeling. Well-written, although just the overall feeling of the book is guilt, sadness and missed opportunities and no sexy times AT ALL to break that up. Wished there had been just a little more to the end.
What is so funny is I am having major cover-gasm over Mack Daddy! I think it is sexy in a tasteful way (and holy crap that guy is hot). For me, the headless naked torsos are kind of icky. However, I have said before that I don’t want ANY ONE besides fellow romance book lovers to see my covers. I would be embarrassed if my RL friends saw what I post on GR.
I did it, guys. I clicked it. Maryse’s latest post was the final straw. Nothing specific about anything she said, I just realized I’ve been thinking and obsessing over MD since I saw it and bitched about the cover this morning. So, my obnoxiousness stops here. Well, at least THIS part of it does. 😉
And of COURSE I had to respond to your comment over on that post!!! 😉
I just read the blurb for A Boy Like You and CLICK. The blurb is a little long but not totally revealing and just vague enough to hook me. It seems to have a pinch of dark to it (not kinky dark…more foreboding dark). Does it have a pinch of dark?
Let me just say one more thing about the hot-guy shirtless covers. Yes, they’re hot and the guys are gorgeous to look at, but to me it’s a cop-out for creativity. Cookie-cutter covers that don’t really say what the book is truly about. Skim thru book covers and 9 out of 10 are shirtless guys and a lot of the same one’s are used over and over.
I loved The Monday Girl and The Someday Girl. My kind of love story! Famous actor and the unknown girl!
Cheryl, I totally agree with you! The thing Mackmoly…er, Mack DADDY has going for it (for me, at least) are the unique factors in a market saturated with the same old-same old. We shall see!!
Jen…I clicked Monday Girl, too. 😀
*snort*
Loved the Monday Girl and Someday Girl! Great read!!!! Strong h.
grrrr nothing is holding my interest either
Maybe it’s Bev’s fault 😉 her rec/loan was the last one I loved
I’m in the mood for something different, something powerful that will make my brain work hard. Something a little cryngy even. It doesn’t have to have romance. In fact, I don’t want any sappy romances right now. I want something gritty and shocking and smart.
*rant over*
Next in line please… :-/
Fabi did you say you tried Murmur action?
Action?
Nope, never tried it. Why?
Murmuration
LOL
And are you referring to The Ravens Boys above? I haven’t started it yet.
I think it might be what you’re looking for. Try a sample. But read the blurb too.
Not at all. I’ve downloaded a sample of Raven Boys but haven’t started it yet. I’m trying to align through my current, overly sweet, romance. It’s given me a toothache.
*align = slog
Come on, get it together autocorrect
Ok, I’d glanced at it when it first came out, but I’ll take another look.
Where’s Grey? Amy and Maryse asked…. You know because they were supposed to be buddy reading TLHoG with her…me…LOL, whatever! Is my weird, referring to myself in the third person guilt trip working yet?
Coincidentally, my last read was a Bev rec too I think. (I’ll Meet You There) hmmmm….. LOL
No, honestly I think I’m just overly stressed and I can’t relax to read until things are finished. Which, obviously I know nothing on my never ending list will ever be totally finished, but it’s this big stuff nagging at me and I will shut down when overwhelmed. So I just need to push myself and I’m sure I’ll soon get sucked in and all will be right in my world! My world feels lopsided and I don’t like it! 😛
Hey now.
I started the Raven Boys then power outage. So started a library book. Now not sure which I want to go back to.
Hmm. Fabi have you read Cottonwood? It does have a romance but dark like Gann.
Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil is so good with only hints of romance. It’s not dark like Cottonwood but deals with some heavy stuff. It’s another English cop one.
There is an m/m one I asked you about one time that is suppose to be dark and gritty. I can’t remember the name. I think it had a bad word in the title, lol.
I’ll meet you there is so good. Definitely not light and fluffy. Loved the small town depiction. One of those towns that people scrabble to make a living and also the yearning for some to leave and for others choose to stay and make a home.
The Serpent king has some of that theme too but the south.
All great suggestions bev. I’m going to start my Raven Boys sample tonight whether or not I manage to get to the end of my current book.
Cottonwood is another R. Lee Smith book right? All this Gann talk has me wanting another or hers.
I’m not fond of the titles of the other too. But I think I’ve considered Serpent King before based on its title. I’ll have another look.
Thanks!
Sorry you’re dealing with power outages. Is it a winter storm?
Fabi, it’s incredibly smart, the romance isn’t heavy, and it’s Klune’addictive writing style. I’d also consider it sci-fi-ish.
LOL R. Alright you convinced me to try a sample
Those other two are YA contemporary and so probably not to your taste.
You don’t like Tell the Truth, Shame the Devil title?
Tasha I hope everything goes right side up soon.
Fabi, I just finished Closer Home which was in no way a sappy romance. It did make you think about relationships and family.
Decision time …..what book to go back to, lol.
Thanks Cheryl. I’ll add it to my sampling frenzy.
Lol, I only have until Tuesday to fit an unscheduled book in. At this rate I’ll be reading samples until then.
But Raven Boys is first tonight. Maybe that one will snag me and keep me going. Then I’ll have a little pile of sample to dig into next time.
bev, Raven Boys. Maybe we can make a little Be on GR wit R, you and me.
R. Since you’re a big Klune fan I’ve been meaning to let you know his latest release had been a big hit among my mm reader friends. I think it’s book 3 or something in one of his series. Just a heads up for your tbr. lol
I’m already on it! I downloaded the sample from book 1 this morning!
Oh good. Let me know how it goes.
Fabi, that one m/m was Mind F*** by Manna Francis. I’m curious about it.
Ok, Raven Boys then The Bear and the Nightingale.
Tessa, it is interesting to start The Bear and the Nightingale so close to finishing Wintersong. Instead of Germany it takes place in Russia. I’m only like 30 pages in but wonderful writing and has that winter, slightly dark fairy tale vibe. Plus, both have great covers.
Oooh I’m sending that to my check library one. I’ve seen so few stories involving Russian myth and folktales. The only one I know of is Ilona Andrew’s Kate Daniels series, and that’s because the wife is from Russia. 😀
OMG Bev! That one sounds so good! Exactly what I was looking for. It doesn’t sound mm, but if it is that’s just a bonus. I don’t think I’ve ever even heard of this one before.
You know what? I’ve never read a Neil Gaiman book. I just realized that, and they look like my type.
Fabi – have you considered Into This River I Drown, by TJ Klune? I just started it, am at 41% and it has just sucked me right in. It’s Klune, so of course I am loving the writing. I think there’s going to be tons of tears though, I just know it. I will review it when I am done, but I think this one has Fabi written all over it.
Thank you Michelle. Another one I hadn’t heard of before now.
I read the sample for The Bear and The Nightingale a while back and was totally into it. Unfortunately, it was out of my budget at $13 for the Kindle edition. That’s been a problem lately, I have loved some samples and theyt are sooooo expensive! Like Wintersong, for example. UGH. Breaking my budget. Maybe I will add them for March and get s bunch of freebies? Or maybe they can be loaned???
What sucks most about the expensive Kindle books is that the price is set by the publisher and that publisher does not allow lends. I’m ok with the price, but I don’t see why they don’t allow one lend. After all, if we purchased the paper based copy we could lend it an unlimited amount of times.
That makes me crazy too Fabi! And usually when that is the case, the paperback is cheaper. Writers, publishers, EVERYBODY makes more on the e-book! Why go out of your way to assure people buy the paperback?
Exactly, Fabi.
Plus for new authors it is a way to spread the buzz, you know?
My library has been getting a lot more books in, how I’m reading The Bear and the Nightingale. Tomorrow I’m picking up 2 more I had on hold. They have the rest of the Raven boys series and Throne of Glass series.
I haven’t tried their digital loans but a ton have popped up there.
I agree Fabi. The prices for some of these ebooks are ridiculous!
So I was lucky enough to get an advance copy of Undeclared by Julianna Keyes which I’m reading now! Then back to Blink by K.L. Slater which I was really getting into but then squirreled…..
GUYS!!! One of my absolute favorites is on sale right now!!
My Life Next Door is 1.99, normally 10.99…it is SUCH a great read! 😀
I love library books. I love the ebook options. Overdrive usually has things checked out, but Hoopla is always available. Hoopla needs more books. :/
Michelle, have you checked your library for the expensive ones?
My library doesn’t have Wintersong
Have you ever checked and checked for a book then finally give in and buy and then next time you go the library has it?
MichelleS & Tessa are we going to BR the last Others next month?
Bev, I’ll read the last Others book with y’all. I was going to stop but since it’s the last one, I’m finishing the series.
I got The Raven Boys from Overdrive. Yeah me. But since I have to start a BR tomorrow, I’ll probably wait and fit it in to my schedule more comfortably.
My library doesn’t participate in Hoopla. Isn’t that a bummer? My library pretty much sucks. I should try to find another one. Lazy is me.
Hoopla is awesome!! Mine has tons of audiobooks, I get 10 per month AND no wait lists!!!
I…I…
*Deep Breath*
You were going to…..to..stop?
*paces in a circle*
I just don’t know.
Of course I will. Then I’ll be participating in a wake for the end of such a great series.
I accidentally got a audio of book I’ve been wanting. I might try it, but I rarely enjoy audio books. I really want to read it, but the library just doesn’t have it. 🙁 So, if you see me truly frustrated, that’s probably me trying to conprehend what I’m hearing.
Finished the Sword of Summer. It does tackle some tough issues, but it doesn’t really make you feel the full emotions of it. I know that sounds odd, but yeah. I can’t think of how to explain it without spoilers.
Um, R & Fabi?
Am I the only one reading The Raven Boys?
I’m reading it but I got a bunch of The Butterfly Project chapters today so I haven’t gotten far. I plan to jump back in tonight!
aww Bev, calm down, here, have a nice glass of Merlot. I said I was reading with y’all next month. 🙂
How’re the Raven Boys doing? I was going to start it but I ended up sticking with the book I was on until the end of it. Finished this morning and don’t figure I have time to squeeze it in before tomorrow. It’s due back on the 27th though. So here’s hoping for another dnf in Feb so I can squeeze it in. :-/. OK, this is getting weird. “Hoping” for a dnf?
Boo Leslie, I don’t get Hoopla. 🙁
I’m still in Gann… Surprised? LOL. Send supplies…
Grey – I think I was in Gann for a week. But you know what? Over a year later I STILL REMEMBER almost everything. It’s just that crazy good, if you let it happen.
How’s it treating you, Grey?
I know I will need to mourn, Tessa.
I will probably be reading it while eating too much chocolate.
It’s OK… I’m not sure if I would have picked this read myself, so chalk up a win for the challenge. It is a monster though. I can’t believe I’ve been reading this book for a week and I’m still only at 41%.
