Kady: I’m just wondering if anyone can recommend a mafia book with a strong female like Melody from Ruthless People. I have read a few now and the women aren’t weak (I mean you don’t fall for these kinds of guys and be weak) but none of them are in the business. None of the other women are quite as kicka** as Melody and im spoiled now lol. I want another great one where the girl can give as good as the guy can.

I’m looking for fun, loving, and awesome individuals to Buddy Read with. LMAO love that line….BUT HONESTLY I NEED A BUDDY READER TO READ GOD SHAPED HOLE WITH ME FOR THE MARCH CHALLENGE….ANYBODY???? BUELLER?????????? Leslie is not being nice and WON’T join so any body else????
*gasp* You’re reading God-Shaped Hole for the challenge?? YAY!!!!!
Hey, Maryse will read it with you.
Won’t ya, Maryse? 😆
I will Ela! See the thread on GR–I already answered you there.
Ela I’m in with you for that one for SURE. I haven’t read it, I KNOW it’s gonna be all Marmy-like, and I am SO IN. No squirreling!
Amy, you know me TOO well. 😀 And I LOVE IT!
YAY MARYSE!!!! And remember YOU said “NO SQUIRRELING”. Robin tried to pull our chain saying GSH is a “fun” read…..yeah sure aha!
Gotcha Renee, here and there….
Bahahaha “no squirreling”!! That’s so cute! 🙂
OMG how funny would that have been if Nay went into it thinking it was a romcom!!??
🙂
Cute. *snort* 😛
“OMG how funny would that have been if Nay went into it thinking it was a romcom!!??”
Um, not funny at all because *I* would get yelled at for recommending it. 🙄
Is your emoji blinking or do I need more than 2 hours of sleep per night?
Dude…Maryse…Female of the Species.
Loving it so far. LOVING it. And waiting for a possible Marmy twist.
Stay tuned.
Rolling its eyes. *giggle*
How did you do that?
Oooooh I love the sound of Amy finding a potential Marmy!!!!
Colon, then lol, then colon. Make sense?
: lol : <——— like that but without the spaces
R… like this:
🙄
P.S. that’s ———-> : roll :
but take out the spaces so it will actually make the face.
Wow. That’s life changing.
Er. Wow Amy. We’re the same. But backwards. LOL!!!!! 😛
Maryse…I think you would LOVE the writing and pacing of this one, in spite of it being three POVs.
I’m absolutely loving it right now. 😀
I mean even the length of the ARROW is the same, and that thing was hand-typed!!!!!!
LOL!!!!!!! Nutty minds think alike!!!
Okay, here’s another “wow”…she asked how to do the eyeroll and I explained how to do the nose wrinkle-giggle thing.
At least you answered with the right emoji. *snort*
Wha? No we have the same symbol. I’m sure of it.
There’s a nose wrinkle emoji??? I want that!
I’ve never noticed before! 😆
OMG the length of the arrow IS the same!! 😛
OH right… YOU LOL’d.
I rolled. LOL!!!!
I put : lol : and you put : roll : (the correct one).
: lol : = 😆 aka nose wrinkle!!
BAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!
No, seriously…I totally just busted out laughing at work and drew attention to myself! 😳
I must be as tired and delirious as R because this conversation is cracking me up!
I need a key for all these emojis. I don’t know how to do any of them! And of course, I have to try it now: 🙄
How do you do the embarrassed one? With ‘blush’ or something like that??
I was going to post ‘so cool’ and I got a virtual hand slap! lol
“You are posting comments too quickly. Slow down.”
LOL Nay. I get that hand slap too. Seriously. This is MY blog and my own blog tells ME to slow down.
*hrmph*!!!!!
:sneeze:
:burp:
😥
:givethebird:
CRY!! I’ll use that one a lot!
Testing of course 😆 🙄
The blushing one is : oops : but without the spaces.
😳
😥
and…there goes my day! 😆
LMAO AT RENEE……I TRIED THE SAME THING WITH TONGUE
I MEANT R.O.B.I.N.
AND HERE WE GO AGAIN CONFUSING ROBIN WITH RENEE
Unfortunately there are only a handful that work here.
Like this…
😈
😍
YES!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
https://character-code.com/emoticons-html-codes.php
Thanks, Ela! I just spit water all over my laptop screen! :joy:
Dang, it didn’t work! What are the codes for other emojis?? I can’t find any with the colons, just copy and paste ones.
I don’t even have a smart phone, so this is super cool for me! When my guys text me with emojis, I just get boxes on my phone screen.
I can’t find the html for the animated ones!
I just finished The Man I Love. Wow. I’m at a loss for words. I need chocolate.
*giggles*
I finished The Last Hour of Gann yesterday. I think it may be my new favorite book. I can’t stop thinking about it.
Anna. The Man I Love was amazing! Make sure you read the rest of the Fish Tale series. Each book was so good.
Kandace- I want to read the rest of the series but I don’t think I can read them one after the other. That was intense.
Mack Daddy isn’t as good as I hoped. I’m at 54% and meh. I don’t have any urge to read it. I think it’s the flash backs. It isn’t done right. It’s show you something, then tell you why it’s funny or sad. It’s like having to tell someone the punchline of a joke. The emotion is just lost in the explanation.
That’s the type of flashbacks I don’t enjoy.
Anna–I was hoping you’d love it! It is a lot, but like Kandace said, just wait until you read the rest!!
I just caught up with all the posts and of course, I’m lmao.
“OH right… YOU LOL’d.
I rolled. LOL!!!!”
You guys are a riot!
Tessa have you read Torn or #1 Crush? I have both of those peeking over the top of my tbr pile. Waving their arms at me.
Kinda sound’t like they’re at a rave!
This is hilarious. I love these little suckers. Gotta try it out (duh) 🙄
And yeah Maryse, you’re right. That list? HOLY MOLY!
OMG it worked! 😳
Will someone type up a quick cheat sheet of the emojis that will work here? Pretty please with a martini on top??
Which Torn?
btw, MichelleS, I’m not having any problems with Keystone by Danika Dark even though I didn’t read the Mageri series. I’m at 28% and really enjoying it. The narrator is possibly the best I’ve ever heard. Ever! I thought it was at least two people narrating at first. But it’s all her.
Tessa, the one MichelleS recommended last week. By Carian Cole.
OOooh. I’m terrified that one will hit my trigger, yet I’m so curious.
Nay- I loved it. I think I’m going to tackle my library books before continuing with Fish Tales.
I have “The Valiant” and “The Bear and the Nightingale” to choose between.
Tessa, I’m with you on the blahs. I haven’t had a single 5 star read all month. I usually have several. Big hopes for this werkend’s selection. Although, I’ve already backed out of a BR because early feedback was “meh”. I can’t handle another meh right now and I sure don’t want to pay $5 for one.
Bah humbug
I’ve had a few, but ironically, it’s the blah books that create my inabilities to read a book. It’s like I can’t get out of the funk that book put me in. How to Save a Life did it. Probably because I had such high expectations of it. *shrugs* Ah well. I expected the same with Mack Daddy, but meh.
Now the Jane Yellowrock books… Those have been awesome this month.
Simon is a 5* read.
*all the emojis*
So would spoiler tags work?
Tessa-I also LOVE the Jane Yellowrock books. It’s one of my top 3 UF series. I also love Toby Daye. I look forward to those every April and September, Did you ever read past the 2nd Toby Daye?
I noticed the other day that the newest Toby Daye book is coming out in hardback at first (usually there’s no hb, and it’s straight to pb) and the kindle edition is $12.99! (usually both the pb and the kindle editions are $7.99 as it is with many of the UF series). I think that is a ridiculous cost for an ebook, especially when the first 10 books of the series have been between $6.99 and $7.99.
I did get Simon from the library Bev. I’m not reading it with this funk, though. That wouldn’t be fair to the book.
I have whiplash from reading this thread today!
I have to go back to Toby Daye. Right now, the Faith Hunter books are nice and cheap, since my library has them. 😀 I think I just want awesome PNR. lol Though Torn is still interesting…I swear, it’s like some twisted thing wanting to know what happened.
Oh and Price… I am looking at buying Briggs and Bishop in March. *shudders* Both are so expensive, but they are re-reads so I don’t want to wait for the library.
Holy sh!t…this girl is a bada$$.
Scary. But a freaking bada$$. I’d want her with me in a dark alley.
Sounds kinky Amy! 😳
Hmmmm…it could be.
But only if Fabi joins the party. *snort*
Yay, glad you’re loving it Amy! I can’t wait till you get to the end!!
Kadi,
You might try The Arrangement by Bethany-Kris.
You guys are funny with your fancy emojis!
Good luck to all you BR-ing God Shaped Hole! You know, the “fun, rom-com”!!!! *laughs maniacally*
Tessa, I was disappointed with Mack Daddy. 🙁
I haven’t been reading for 3 days. It feels weird. Been busy at work, so didn’t want to start something new. Finished Fake Fiancée on Tuesday which was ok for a light read.
Saw The King Triology by Mimi Pamfiloff is 99 cents at the moment for all 3 books. It’s an oldie but I recall it being quite good for a paranormal series, if anyone hadn’t read it.
I need to find something in my TBR list to read. Hopefully something will be yelling ‘read me, read me’.
Sharon I have whiplash, too!
I left a few hours ago to read, come back and the comments have doubled! And are pretty funny considering the emoji attempts.
*gasp*!!!
Have I already one-clicked that one?
*runs to look up cheap King trilogy*
YAY!!! Thank you Antonella. I just got it. Some of the hottest covers and I keep hearing whispers of a “Barrons-feel” so I now own it! 😀
So… I bought the newest Amelia Hutchins. Nothing can get me out of a funk like her, but it’s been so long, I remember only vague details of the first book. This means… TWO BOOKS TO READ!
It did have a Barrons feel to it, Maryse. I remember that, though I’m happy having ended it at the trilogy.
Oh good, Leslie. I thought it was me. I really wanted to like it, but nope. Just too many misplaced flashbacks.
Barrons?! I’m on it right now!! I don’t think I’ve heard of this “King trilogy”. I thought y’all were talking about the non-PnR one at first.
Oh yes, Robin got me earlier on a GR thread. I mentioned that I read the blurb for God Shaped Hole long ago and remembered nothing about it, so i’m going in blind. And I think she said it was a ‘cute romcom’, so dummy me said I don’t care for cute but maybe I can handle it with a romantic comedy. I didn’t even realize she was kidding! Duh!! 😳
So, back to these emojis. I looked back, and I only found these codes, but there are other emojis with no code listed. We’ve got:
😳 = : oops : (without spaces)
🙄 = : roll :
😆 = : lol :
What else? What’s the laughing so much you’re crying one? The frowny one? And the two different one’s y’all posted with red eyes? Any others??
Maryse, that chair is cool, but I did not think you’d be beige chair person.
You guys maybe your moods wouldn’t ruin Simon, but Simon would improve your moods.
👿
OOOH, I like that one!
:evillol:
:evil1:
:good:
I can’t get the smiley evil demon!
:evil2:
:rage:
:innocent:
:smiling_imp:
:skull:
Sorry Nay! 😘
At Any Turn: (Adam & Mia #2) (Gaming The System) by Brenna Aubrey is free!
Amy, I’ll bring the nail polish. 😉
For anyone with The Butterfly Project in their TBRs, Emma’s giving away 10 copies through her Entourage page! It’s the top post. https://www.facebook.com/groups/906742879369651/
I should mention *existing members* so if you are one of those… I must sleep LOL 🙄
Hmmm…
Nope.
So… Big news Amelia Hutchins responded to a question/comment on Goodreads… She says that the next Playing With Monsters book should be out this year!!! *happy dance*
I’ll second (third?) that “Barrons Feel” for King Trilogy! It sure did. King is that jerk you love to hate. Loved that trilogy!
I’m craving PNR for my next read too. I’ve got Dark Stranger by I.T. Lucas on my TBR. Supposed to have a BDB feel. Anyone read it? I’m going to give it a shot. Hot cover & 99 cents. Woop!
Yay for Hutchins news!
I’m in on the vote for the King’s PNR trilogy. So freakin good. I’d hazzard to say that early King was even scarier than earky Barrons.
Fabi – I’m betting that Into This River I Drown would be a 5 star read for you. Just a hunch! And maybe September (Pride & Joy). Had Fabi written all over it.
Insert some cute winky emoji here cause I can’t handle trying it myself!
Right Fabi!!! He was so dark & broody & mysterious. I kept thinking, “what is he?” Not who is he! Just like Barrons.
I added September to my tbr as soon as you recommended it the first time. I’ll go look at Into This River I Drown. That title would normally put me off as too angsty, but you know my tastes so I’ll check it out.
Exactly Michelle. I even wondered if he was good or bad at times.
Tessa, did you read Rhapsodic, The Bargainer? Good PNR for a “funk”!
It’s TJ Klune, and closest to that Wolfsong feel from him. Very melancholy. True love story. So “different”. Of course, nothing compares to Wolfsong, but I really felt this one too.
I’m still thinking about September. Best CR for me this year. And it’s m/m, but beat out the other CRs so far.
My library has the King PNR trilogy so I will add that to my list of PNRs to try. Although I have major book guilt from dnf-ing the bazillion other ones. 🙁
Tessa, have you read of Smoke and Bone? I’m only on page 76 but good so far. Think it maybe one you’d like.
I started Mist too. Only just put the prologue. It seems pretty good so far. But, no tears.
So is the spoiler tags the same type of thing as the emojis?
I am completely illiterate in this type of thing.
no tears
Nope, doesn’t work. *shrug *
Michelle, the first review I pulled up, first line in build letters:
This book didn’t made me cry, it made me weep.
Maybe this one is more Robin’s taste. :-/
Leslie, I remember reading your list of PNRs you’ve tried. Honestly girl, you haven’t really tried any/many of the “greats” in the genre.
Many of us old PNR readers hadn’t heard of or hadn’t tried most of the ones on your list.
Eh, but it doesn’t mean you’ll cry or weep.
Mist of the Serengeti? So far nary a tear for me.
Jellicoe Road made me cry but I don’t think Amy did. And even though it did the book was not made of sadness just one of the chords.
Leslie, you should read Written in Read.
That should be Red.
*kicks auto correct*
Leslie! YOU MUST TRY THE FAE CHRONICLES AND ANYTHING AMELIA HUTCHINS! Then of course you have IMMORTALS AFTER DARK!
But Leslie’s favorite genre is contemporary romance and WiR doesn’t really have any. At least not much more than a nebulous thread during the first book.
Exactly that’s why FAE and IAD would work for her! And Leslie, you must give Charley another try and be patient for the romance to bloom!
I’ve read a few IAD but never really got into the other two.
Fabi those words are like a warm blanket wrapped around my soul <3
I wonder if I’m just emotional right now. I cried so hard during Mists if you’d have been standing in front of me, my projectile tears would have taken you down. It was bead. Serious ugly cry.
IAD rocks!
Okay, I need more info on this King PNR business and I’m too lazy to scroll back up. Barrons feel? I’m in!! Who is the author?
Even if a book doesn’t make me cry or weep, a good ol’ overwhelming heartache is just as satisfying. 😉 Like Jellicoe Road…just as bev said, I didn’t cry but oh MAN was my heart crushed.
awww Robin, I’m so glad I can make you cry. 😉
Lol, I know Fabi. Honestly? I’m 95% sure she’d not like it. But the 5% is the fun part. Plus, then she could be all, But bev, WiR sucks.
Sometimes it’s just fun to see what works and what doesn’t, like those emojis.
The Fae Chronicleswas great! “F$&@ing Fairy!” LOL!!!!
Amy
https://www.goodreads.com/series/127874-the-king-trilogy
Amy, The King Trilogy is by Mimi Jean Pamfiloff. The boxed set is $0.99 on Amazon.
https://www.amazon.com/Boxed-Set-Mimi-Jean-Pamfiloff-ebook/dp/B00VF1NZFU/ref=sr_1_2?ie=UTF8&qid=1488035738&sr=8-2&keywords=King+trilogy+by+mimi-jean
On their FB fan page Syn continues to call him her Erin Fairy!
I like how the trilogy has a book 4 and 5…. lol
Hmmmm…what about EIT for Leslie? Slow buildup/longing in the romance department and then BAM!! Angst!!!
*sigh* I loved Dex and Perry.
And then there is Simon. Which yes a part of my brain turns into Ela a does a cha cha in fringe and beads proclaiming, EVERYONE WILL LOVE LOVE LOVE THIS. EVERYONE.
Then R is all reasonable and , bev no. Amy and Fabi? It’s not for them.
So, my brain Ella takes it down a notch and puts on her jeans and t shirt and while doing the running man(occasionally throwing in a Roger rabbit) says, Come ON. Let’s just SEE. It will be FUN.
I’ve read a few of the Fae Chronicles too. But for me, none come close to the greatness of the early works by Christine Feehan, Sherrilyn Kenyon and of course, the one and only J.R. Ward.
Whoa there bev. I’ll take a mimosa… 😀
I agree with bev! EVERYONE WILL LOVE SIMON AS WELL AS IAD AND FAE CHRONICLES, HOW CAN THEY NOT????
Thanks ladies! A boxed set for .99?? CLICK. 😀
Oh pffftttt! Those early PNR authors may be overrated! Lol….love em too, though
*perks up*
Did someone say mimosa??
All these Simons.
I want Leslie to meet Simon from WiR.
Amy & Fabi, to meet Simon from Simon vs the Homosapiens Agenda.
Leslie: “I’m very picky and read contemporary romance almost exclusively”
Bev: “oh, then you’ll love this YA m/m and this Fantasy novel.”
Ela: “but my favorite is xxx, so you’ll love it”
Amy: “slow burn and tears, this one is for you”
Fabi: “I’m old, so oldies is the way to go.”
*Leslie scratches head, and with a confused look on her face, goes back to reading CR*
Hey, Amy dances like this when she reads a Marmy. …so no judgment.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3Dc-tW0CkvdDI&ved=0ahUKEwimv-SEyKvSAhVS-GMKHQspAVcQyCkIHDAA&usg=AFQjCNEjvFJA16NQLXOR8eqhKT0LYKAjvA
OMG Fabi!
What, you don’t bev? I thought we all did. Why do you think it took me so long to get through Mists?
LOL. That’s perfect, Fabi.
Damn Amy can dance! *whispers, that guy is hot too, you think he’s single*
Fabi? My favorites are xxx? Are you insinuating I only like smut?
He stole my dance.
My Marmy dance.
I’m gonna file a lawsuit since that is the American way.
I love that GR added the “read for the second time” feature, but has anyone noticed that every book you read now says you’re reading for the second time by default? It’s saying that about Mists and bev right now!
lol Ela, it never crossed my mind. …but now that you mention it…
Hahaha kidding! We all like smut. We read romance after all.
………
Bev, omg! that was one of the most beautiful dances I’ve seen. Wow!
I saw that R! It doesn’t make sense, did something get clicked by accident?
Oh and Ela, that dancer is probably gay, so, we’re all out of luck. lol!!!
I know I do have my smut rampages 😳
I don’t think so Ela. For the last 3 books I’ve read I’ve noticed it and had to go in manually and click the x to delete the second read dates.
Not all ballet male dancers are most likely gay, surely?
I have hit read on accident before and then have to go fix, but yeah have seen it on others status as well. I’ve seen it on R’s and when Tessa was reading Wintersong. A few other times as well.
Not all. Of course not. And I have no idea about this one. Honestly I think he’s hot regardless of his sexual orientation. Besides, he one exceptional dancer!!!
Fabi, I wonder what it is like to be able to do that.
I know ballet is hard, but they make it look so effortless.
People are complaining about all kinds of bugs since the new feature released on GR. That’s pretty typical for them with each new feature release.
I was just pulling your chain Fabi….he most likely is! Lol! But damn he’s got moves and ballet is freaking hard!
aw Bev, I’m a HUGE fan of dance. I find it stunningly beautiful. They have control of every single muscle and sinew in their body, that’s why they can make it look so effortless when it’s anything but.
I think I’m the only one who didn’t like King’s, but I did really like Darkfever.
Girlfriend.

IDK if this wink will work but OMG I’m dying. https://photoalbum.godaddy.com/GalleryFilmstrip.aspx?gallery=4802328&mid=101732893&mt=Photo
I think you have to then click on the pic to make it bigger?
idk R. I just see a figure in a Gawain shirt in the middle of a black tie affair
what?? I need to find a new photo site. Photobucket is annoying and godaddy sucks.
Ha. After Fabi’s comment I was thinking someone in a shirt with a pic of Gawain and the Green Knight.
Then it’s a dude in a Hawaiian shirt.
OK try this. If we ever get another book bash, I think this might be me and Amy…
Johnny Depp makes me sad. I used to love him.
I was obsessed with What’s the Story Morning Glory? Still love that album.
I have a set of nesting dolls, they are so cool.
Don’t even get me started on Dirty Dancing.
LOL thats the bucket I use to drop pics I post on GR. I love my nesting dolls. My husband got them for me because of my Fish obsession. Dirty Dancing is prevalent in All In and my favorite movie, so I used it to make teasers for my review 😀
I know right! I haven’t heard Oasis in years and then I saw it on the playlist and can’t stop listening.
OMG that’s SO us, R!!! And you know I would have the hardest time NOT calling you R in person… *snort*
Some people are too cool to have surnames, I’ll just bee too cool to have other letters!
bev…that article just made me swoon and fall back on the fainting couch. So. Freaking. Sweet.
Tasha! I’m a little a-scared right now because I’m attached to the three MCs and this can NOT end well… 😐
Buzz buzz. 😆
Ya know, because you’ll “bee” too cool to have other letters.
Yeah, that just fell like a lead balloon.
You know at those conventions people wear name tags. They put their Web names on them. So if at RT you’ll have to be R.
Just one bit “R” and I’ll pretend I’m a rapper.
How about you put a symbol on your name tag and be the woman formerly known as Robin.
*closes Word for the day, starts designing logos*
OOH!! Fall From Grace (Mad World series) by Christine Zolendz is FREE right now!
Grown-up PNR with a nice dose of angst and HOT sexy times. 😀
lol R!!! Love the pic of and Amy. Love the nickname (blog name). But you know what I live even more???
Frankie!!!
Open that Word app back up right now. *mean face*
LOL I am, but I have to get through a blog post first. I forgot this is a short month!
Thanks Amy! Just downloaded it.
R. no rest for the weary. 😉
Just wanted to mention that ‘Fall From Grace’ was an awesome book! I recommended it to someone here not too long ago (may have been when we were trying to find something PnR that Leslie and/or Robin might like). And I’ll second what Fabi said, “Many of us old PNR readers hadn’t heard of or hadn’t tried most of the ones on your list.”
what do you guys mean by ‘Barron’s feel’? Who are u referring to/what book is this?
Antonella Barrons is the H in Karen Marie Monning’s Fever series.
Michelle, I got Rhapsodic, The Bargainer through KU, but haven’t read it yet.
Bev, I’ve read that. I actually got Blood and Starlight from the library and need to read that. Someone randomly mentioned Smoke and Bone and I’d been trying to remember what the book was I had in my head for so long. Finally, someone mentioned it, and I grabbed the second book that week.
Happiness over Playing with Monsters. That book, gah.
I’ve been wanting to try Fall from Grace. That’s awesome. *one click*
Leslie, what did you like about Twilight? Was it Edward was a gentleman? The love triangle? The angst of does he love me or not? The hero aspect of Edward? The family connection? That might help us figure something for you to try.
*pushes Leslie out of the way and raises hand* yes to all of the above 😍
What the hell?!? I didn’t think my heart was going to ache this way from this book!! I have a lump in my throat and I’m on the verge of tears! 😥
It’s the writing. That has to be it. This author takes a simple event that happens in most books but words it in a way that makes me FEEL it, physically and emotionally and mentally. GAH!!!!
Holy moly. Everything is right in the world and I want to stop reading right here.
I don’t want to see things implode.
I don’t want to see things fall apart.
I’m a-scared.
And I think I’m gonna sick-up all over my fuzzy blanket.
Uh. *finds Manny and hands it to her* Here you go!
Amy–I’d say it’s definitely the writing. It’s phenomenal! She makes everything sound so beautiful!
Tessa–I also read Rhapsodic after I heard how much Michelle liked it and really enjoyed it. I’ll definitely read the next one when it comes out!
*takes Manny and squeezes him*
I’m running to do some grocery shopping before I attempt to read the last bit. If it decimates me I would rather not have to leave the house right after. And we NEED groceries right now.
Stupid real life.
Nay…you are so right. SO right.
I’;; get to it. Hutchins is working for me now. I’m re-reading Darkest Before Dawn because I got Death Before Dawn. I swear, it’s HOT, which I totally forgot but should realize with the author. 😀
R and Edward in real life.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=%23&ved=0ahUKEwjJ6tq9mqzSAhUY2GMKHZ8vDXkQxa8BCCAwAw&usg=AFQjCNF1sHlk2z9QIx28jtvfnGP_UlkifA
I am DYING here over all these comments! You guys are killing me. (Fabi, that was the best)
Maryse!!! R, pushed me!!!
Lol seriously! What makes Twilight awesome to you? That’s the best way we can recommend books.
Sorry, trying to respond but my “lovely” husband is squawking that he wants me to make dinner. Grrrrr. Be back soon.
Holy crap *hits the pause button* what the h*ll have you guys been drinking? Y’all are a bunch of chatterboxes today!
Amy… what are you reading…cuz I wants it!
I’ve been soooo busy today! I am finally going to go read, right now. I want a giggle emote… you know :giggle: because that’s me!!!
Tessa, I know, I am SUPER stoked about the next PWM book, it’s the highlight of my reading year I think. LOL!
Does anybody else watch the Oscars?
What I loved about Twilight? I could wax poetic about that forever.
I loved every single thing about the romance. How Edward was jerky at first, then couldnt stay away, the whole forbidden-ness of vampire/human, then how he left Bella, then Bella saving him, etc. I liked that it took place mostly in real world and PNR part wasnt so weird that I could understand it.
Bev, I dont watch Oscars or usually any awards shows live as too many parts that Im not interested in so I get bored. Def a dvr thing .
Ok, now on to e everyone’s suggestions (Thanks, by the way)
Bev, not sure that WiR would be my thing, but I’m adding it to list of ones to try. 🙂
Amy, EiT does sound good. I have loved some of Karina Halle’s CRs.
Ela, Fae Chronicles looks interesting, I’ve never tried anything like that before. Adding it to list! Immortals After Dark honestly doesnt sound like my thing. 🙁 As far as Charley Davidson, I didnt like that one. The whole seeing dead people/mystery part and dark humor turned me off…sorry.
Ok Leslie, get ready for the million recs coming your way.
Twighlight was the first one I read. (over and over again lol). Then went to Dark Prince by Christine Feehan and I’ve been a PNR fan ever since.
So, that’s the one I’d recommend to you.
I don’t remember what my first pnr or uf was. Way before twilight though.
A mix of kenyon, feehan, hamilton, then Macalister. Some others too. *shrug*
I read War of the Oakes around then too, so good.
What were your favorites before Twilight, Leslie?
Fabi, that one sounds good! I’ve never seen that one before. Added to list!!! 🙂
*kicks a rock* My first was LJ Smith or even Christopher Pike prior.
Hmm, that makes sense! So a bit of forbiden and the saving romance… Now to think!
Twilight is what got me into reading romance. Before Twilight reading was only an occasional hobby and if you can believe it, I used to like non-fiction.
I have always wanted to love other PNR stories since and am having a heck of time finding my niche.
Twilight might just be exception.
I didn’t realize Pike wrote those genres. I always thought of him as YA horror or thriller type. But I only read like one that I remember.
A YA series that I found to be “Twighlighty” is the the Lux series by Jennifer Armentrout. It’s sci-fi instead of PNR but easily reads as YA PNR romance. It’s set in the modern world with the MCs as neighbours and schoolmates. The first book is Obsidian.
Most of Christopher Pike’s story had some form of romance. Especially the later ones. I remember Final Friends just rooting for the romance, and oooh, when you found out who did it, that was a shock too. (At least, to my 11/12 year old self).
I was looking at my YA stuff too Fabi. I went to Covenant of course. lol Or the Sweet series by Wendy Higgins. (Which I found out about because of the Lux series). I wonder, Leslie, does the mystery that’s in the PNR stuff what turns you off? A lot of adult PNR have some big adventure/ mystery involved.
Leslie, I know what you should read.
Eyes of silver, eyes of gold.
I don’t remember the title of the I read. I want to say it leaned more psych thriller/gothic.
And probably wasn’t supposed to be rooting for the romance. Since he tried to kill her and all. But she did get the Butler in the end.
Damn. Wow. Just…oh man. Female of the Species was SO freaking good, great even, but not going to lie…it’s pretty brutal on the emotions. In a YA WTF kind of way. That’s about as articulate as I can get right now.
I need a drink. Like NOW.
Early IAD was some of the best PNR I’ve ever read! Funny & sexy & action. I have reread them so many times. How can you not love sexy Scottish werewolves?
Amy, I’ve heard nothing but good things but I saw spoilers.
Grey…I was reading Female of the Species. And yes, you definitely wants it!
bev…I used to watch bits and pieces of the Oscars and other awards shows, but I’m pretty cynical now about them and avoid anything related to them. Bunch of out-of-touch-with-reality people patting each other on the back, acting like they cured cancer and using the platform to spout their political and social opinions as if they actually matter? (I’m talking to you, Meryl Streep) No thanks.
*quietly slinks off soapbox*
*reaches for Midol*
Aw, that sucks bev! You definitely don’t want spoilers for this one. 😕
I love Meryl Streep.
I do love a good speech. I had to watch Jessie Williams speech when I heard about it though I didn’t watch the show. I watched Michelle ‘ s convention speech like 5 times, lol.
But I get how it turns people off especially if they do not align with your thoughts.
Then there is Lin Manuel Miranda who I now have a huge crush on….Though I’ve never seen him on Broadway. He will be there. He won an award at the Tony’s, didn’t watch but had to his speech afterwards, not long after the shooting in Florida. And it’s mostly to his wife. And like 60 seconds.
I love it and I promise not political. If you want to see it cause he’s my crush, lol. He will be at the Oscars. And I’m shallow I like the. opening and the gowns. I haven’t even watched many movies this year.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DnUffUHGqYco&ved=0ahUKEwjI8bGIzKzSAhUW9GMKHTATD58QwqsBCCkwAQ&usg=AFQjCNH4xWc77Gai5Ir-yefTXYcTpUJ6RQ
And car pool karaoke. And I’ll stop now. Probably.
https://www.google.com/url?sa=t&source=web&rct=j&url=https://m.youtube.com/watch%3Fv%3DYshgmStEZh0&ved=0ahUKEwjGvtyPzazSAhUK-2MKHV1QA-sQyCkIHDAA&usg=AFQjCNHH72eurxv62h-aGfORoTr87CuQ1A
Fabi, I actually have read Obsidian. It was ok…I dont remember much as it was years ago but I never read past book 1. Not sure how I feel about non-adult characters.
Tessa, yes, mystery does turn me off.
Bev, carpool karaoke is awesome!
bev…even when their views DO align with mine, I still get turned off of their political speeches. I just don’t like the self-importance they place on themselves, ya know?
*turned off BY their political speeches
See! That right there, mystery turning you off, makes the biggest difference as far as what tor recommend. Okay, this will take longer, because that’s a huge focus of PNR.
I see.
Tessa ‘ s on the case. 😉
I think they do it (political speeches during Oscars) because it has such a huge, worldwide audience. They want people around the globe to know that all Americans are not what they may be perceived as, especially now. I don’t watch because I haven’t seen ANY of those films! And I don’t know anyone in Hollywood anymore.
THAT’S your crush Bev??? Heehee… the ponytail…. okay. I won’t make fun. What happened to Cumerbatch?
Lol. The hair was for his role as Alexander Hamilton. And did you watch his speech to his wife?

You all realize how many PNR books I’ve read in my life, right? Finding one that isn”t a mystery or adventure is HARD! I am gonna need all your guys’ help. Honestly, I figure it’s probably why I didn’t like Twilight as much as everyone else.
Vampire Academy? Maryse has a list for after Twilight too: https://www.maryse.net/books/quick-recommendations-for-future-reading.html
Tessa–I’m with you, I’ve read hundreds, but I need some help here–if a PnR book doesn’t have a mystery or adventure locked into it, then what does it have? It would definitely be those that don’t lean toward urban fantasy, because those are full of mystery/adventure. I need an example of something before I can come up with a recommendation. In the meantime, I’m looking at my PnR shelf to see if anything jumps out at me.
Tasha–Yes! Vamp Acad. That’s one of the ones I recommended to Leslie (or Robin) the last time we tried to bring them over to the dark side! I can’t remember if Leslie said she’d tried the first one or that she’d consider them???
Nay, you recommended Vampire Academy as your top choice for me. I did start that one, but wasnt in mood. I only got as far as the two roommates escaping their room. So it isnt a DNF, its a GBL, which is progress right? Hee hee
I dont mind if there is “some” mystery…but I dont want it soley focused on it and I dont want lots of murder/death. So I guess lite murder/mystery/adventure/death is ok. Hee hee
Thats clear as mud right?
I actually have quite a list going of ones to try:
Dark Prince
Fae Chronicles
Alpha & Omega
Blood Curse
Mageri
Experiment in Terror
Sucubus
Written in Red
Immortals After Dark
Yes! Vampire Academy! Or I was also thinking Jamie McGuires Providence series or Hush Hush by Becca Fitzpatrick or Blue Bloods by Melissa de la Cruz.
Leslie! YOU MUST TRY IAD AGAIN UNTIL IT IS YOUR THING. Lol
Oh! fallen series by Kate Lauren
Oh what about Cat and bones?.Jeaniene_Frost
Ela, I have heard soooooo much about Cat & Bones over the years…that is one I’ve wanted to try too. But I really like sound of Fae one you suggested.
I’m not sure I want to read ones with teenagers. I know Twilight was considered YA, but it didnt feel it since Edward was over 100 yrs old. Hee hee
The FAE chronicles ROCK DEEP!
Technically the H in the Fallen series is past 100 years old…
I agree with all of Ela’s recs and want to add the Covenant series by Jennifer Armentrout. I thought it was similar to the VA series at first but I loved it SO much more than VA. *sigh* Aiden is my book guy and I have the biggest girl crush (still) on Alex. And Tessa loves Seth from that series. 😉
I’m so glad I’m reading (listening) PNR right now because this discussion has me seriously craving the genre.
Same Fabi! Okay, adventure/mystery lite definitely helps. I agree with Nay. PNR over Urban Fantasy. Fae Chronicles is HOT. lol I’m reading her other one, and yep, HOT. 🙂
When I get on my computer, I’ll look again. That does help to make it lite.
I would recommend BDB or Lords of the Underworld but as great as they are I don’t think they’re up Leslie’s alley. There’s one series I have in my head but shit can’t connect it withe the author or title, it’s YA though.
But I did remember those dragon books, not YA and hot and awesome….I will try to find titles and author.
https://www.goodreads.com/series/111879-dragon-septs
There’s also The Mortal Instruments. Lynsay Sands books.
Hey! The Dallas YA book club is going to read Simon vs the Homo Sapiens Agenda in March. 🙂 I just had to mention that on this blog. —bev—
Because. It. Is. Awesome.
Read, Fabi. Read it.
And if you dislike it you and R can forever hold it over me.;)
Please give me that chance!
lol 🙂 I’ll read it one of these days.
When I’m in the mood for YA m/m contemporary romance with zero sexy times and high angst…
:-/
Only Amy’s and Robin’s heart shredding books sound less like me than this one does.
But I’ll try anything. …
Long shot here, but (at the risk of revealing your age) does anyone here remember a commercial with two little boys. The older one getting the younger, Mikey, to try some food/cereal or something. He’d say something along the lines of “give it to Mikey” “he’ll try anything”.
That’s me Fabi/Mikey
My angst/tears over Simon were unusual. I think I’m just an emotional reader, still NO sexy times and YA.
Uh yeah I remember that. And “Where’s the beef?” 😀
Of course I remember that commercial. Life cereal!!!
Was it Life? I thought Kix. Tells you how well I remember it. lol
Kix was “silly rabbit, kix is for kids!”
I think it was life. Great memory Leslie!
I love y’all for not making me feel so old! lol!!!
I seem to have my own personal version of March Madness in the form of my reading schedule next month.

Wish me luck. I really shouldn’t quit my job because I have too much to read. :-/
You have my permission to quit, Fabi.
Ok. We have to re frame Simon.
Look at Simon as The Martian. A human looking at a new landscape with heart, intelligence, and humor. You root for him and let him navigate you through this world.
Look at the romance as Illuminae. (No I don’t know how the romance is told there but go with me) It is told through posts and IMs. They develop and nurture it through words, ideas, and jokes. Not on physical combustion.
And an added bonus of a mystery.
Alright Bev! *clap clap clap* Now, that, sounds like a book I want to read.
Thank you R.
I’ll turn in my resignation tomorrow and pack my bags so I can move into your house rent free.
I don’t cook or clean much. And I do eat a lot. But, I’m always ready to talk books with you, day or night. 😉
Fabi, that sounds like heaven! I cook all the time and I don’t want you getting in my way. You can read to me from the bar. And messy’s fine. I’ve decided to give up on housework anyway!
OMG LOL!!! You’re perfect.
TRIX is for kids! Not Kix, lol!
I mentioned before how much I loved Vampire Academy (so much that I drove almost 30 miles to buy the newest hardback, which is MAJORLY NOT me because I’m cheap, cheap, cheap), but haven’t read the Lux or the Covenant series, although I’ve heard they were awesome.
I think there got to be so many of them that it seemed too daunting to get hooked on a new YA series (which I typically don’t enjoy). Do either of them lean at all toward NA or is it strictly YA? With VA it didn’t matter to me that it was YA because I loved it so much (just like with Twilight).
Woops.
May I think they both lean towards NA towards the later part F the series. Lux especially does.
grrr autocorrect
Sorry “Nay”
All of Armentrout YA books go into NA a little eventually. She’s an author that any of her PNR, it’s automatic for me. I do like her CR, I just don’t grab CR as fast as PNR.
Jean…Where are ya ? I’m finishing up the last little bit of my current book then I’m ready for Singe. Are you still gonna read it with me?
OK-thanks. I’ve enjoyed any of her CR that I’ve read–what she’s written under J. Lynn. I’ll give those a try someday. I have the first in each series on my kindle.
Also, gotta say, the men are swoony. Seth is my favorite, but all joking aside, they are all hot with different personalities.
Hey Ladies! I just got ‘the call’!! My cardiologist, Dr. Babu, got an offer on a heart, so we’re going to the hospital now. Hopefully, I’ll have my new heart by morning! I’ll keep in touch as soon as I can!
OMG Nay! Congratulations! I’ll be thinking of you. <3
Thanks! We’re leaving now!
That’s great news Nay! Hoping for a smooth surgery and comforting recovery!
Here for you Renee! Have a quick, safe, and healthy recovery!!!!!
Wishing you the very best Nay.
NAY!!! OMG!!! That’s awesome. And scary. Keeping you in my thoughts today. Please update when you can.
Going to chime in on the PNR discussion, ’cause I just love me some PNR!!
If you are looking for a “smart PNR” with a back story that is interesting, which sounds like what you were saying…
The Elemental Mysteries series by Elizabeth Hunter
The Irin Chronicles by Elizabeth Hunter
Knights of the Black Swan by Victoria Danann
Those might be more UF? I always get the two mixed up. They take place in our world (well, kinda – Danann’s books are in al alternate universe like ours) – the stories unfold over several books. Lots of secondary characters to love. I like that they are smart and well researched.
Nay! Sending all positive thoughts and prayers your way.
I’m in awe at your good humor and bravery.
Sometimes when I type or read your name, Nay…I get this in my head.

NAY!!!! Sending prayers and healing wishes to you!!!
Jennifer Armentrout writes really well as J. Lynn but her PNR/UF written under JA are my favorites, especially THE COVENANT SERIES!!!! 😀
Same. Covenant is my favorite, though I’m loving the Titan series. 😀
OMG Nay! Congrats. Get through, rest and enjoy books and pampering after!
Did anyone ever read Torn from Jennifer Armentrout’s Wicked saga? I loved Wicked and waited forever for Torn. I was so excited at first since Wicked had such a big cliffy, but waiting so long kinda made it lose its luster for me and I moved on. With all this talk of her books again, I’m wondering if it was just as good and I should pick it up?
Thanks, everyone! I’m lying in the hospital bed, attached to all the iv’s (I have 3 with more coming). So far it looks like the heart is a great match and they’re getting it now and are expecting to start the 6-8 hour surgery at 3:00 CST.
And btw, I may have to put off those March buddy reads! Lol
I will be back in touch as soon as I can. Thanks again so much for all of your well wishes and prayers!
Tasha, yes! It had some major twist and turns. Also, fae.
Nay, you do what you need to to get healthy. *hugs*
OMG NAY!!!! I just saw this!!! So frigging excited!!!!!! I’m abusing the exclamation points in a major way! Praying so hard for you and all the doctors and nurses taking care of you, please keep us posted!
