This book really packed a punch. Like no other historical romance I’ve read – a stellar & epic read. It may well appeal to readers who do not read historical romance…it’s not traditional and has a modern vibe.Bennett is an amazing heroine…feisty, a bit broken, cunning, loving. Godwin writes exceptionally well, and paints a rich picture of all the men in her life (is every pirate gorgeous?). She also makes you feel like you’re right on the pirate ship feeling the sway, the sea and scents.
The story in multi-layered and has you constantly on the edge of your seat.
It’s steamy, angsty, risqué and colourful. This may be my book of the month. 5*****

So, remember how I said nothing was going right yesterday? I did finish my projects, not everything I set out to do, but I got somewhere and I was content. TODAY, on the other hand, started off to me waking to find my dog, the 14yr old, peed from 1 end of the sectional to the other. Massive puddles, trickles everywhere. I immediately sent the hubs off to buy a dog crate. Then noticed his eye was leaking? something more than normal so he sits at the vet till they have time to check him out. I have 7,000 children today. We’ve run the sprinkler, make a couple lunches, my living room and kitchen and outside is a freakin wreck. But I’m still smiling cuz I’m pretending if I keep really positive today everything will go faster and feel better when it’s over. It just feels like for the last couple weeks, it’s been 1 thing after another and I’m sore and tired. And, tired. 😂
My BOTM box came today and this is the 1st time I’ve not been anxiously waiting, cuz, time? But I made a big show of it during lunch cuz hubs said they wouldn’t care, but my excitement is contagious! 🤣😂 Home Before Dark and The Last Flight. Whoo!!
Oh, and it’s hubby’s birthday. I feel bad. He should’ve made plans today.
And it is the weekend again. Though weekends kind of dont have the same meaning any more. Going to watch something silly or read something cozy I think.
With all that is going on I was looking at my tbr and I have very few books by black authors and with black main characters. Does anyone else notice that?
Yeah they aren’t as common as you’d expect, are they bev? I have really enjoyed Nia Forrester’s Commitment series. Fantastic books. I’m also currently powering my way through Suzanne Brockmann’s Troubleshooters series, at least one of which (so far) has an interracial MC couple. Apparently this was a little controversial when they were first published. *shakes head*
There are a lot of book lists being posted to read but a blog I read reposted a tweet about, paraphrasing here, read our happy stories too”. I’ve seen some lists pop up on a couple YA and Romance blogs and I have some of the books, but still havent read them. Anyway it was a question to ask myself.
I’ve read some of Brockman. I didnt read that entire series and what I read was out of order but it was fun.
Jan, I just started the first one in the Commitment series. I don’t know if I should keep going. I hate cheating with a passion. And I’m getting frustrated just like I did reading the After series. Should I go on? What’s your favorite book in the series? This author writes so well that I still hope there is a book for me here.
I looked that series up. Cheating is one of those things I can only take in certain circumstances, lol. Like I dont want the whole book to be about cheating, but a second chance based on I could do. Or maybe even it happens in the book as something to come back from or move on with, I think.
Thanks, Bev. I know what you mean. There are very few books that I still liked even though there was cheating, like Carnage by Lesley Jones and True Love Story by Willow Aster. From what I read so far, this book is all about cheating (no spoilers). I’ll wait and see what Jan recommends.
My fav two are Afterwards and Afterburn. I also liked The Comeup and The Fall. The cheating incident in Commitment was hard for me to take, too. I’m not a fan of cheating either, but IMO Forrester is a fabulous writer and I get totally sucked in to her believable characters, and I was convinced by the circumstances and the real regret shown afterward. Her characters are complex people with very human failings.
