Look what just went live!! Today’s latest Friday Finds and Reader Recommendations…

October 21, 2016 By Maryse 410 Comments

<— PENELOPE DOUGLAS JUST WENT LIVE ALERT!!! Punk 57 is ready, and our fellow book-buddy, Grey, LOVED it!

Grey: This book took my feels for the Fall Away series, Corrupt and Misconduct threw them in the Kitchen-Aid and turned that sucker on. You’re going to read a million reviews of what this story is about, plus I’m not a spoiler queen, so I’m not going to waste your time recapping the story for you. Read the book! I’m just going to tell you that Penelope Douglas doesn’t pull any punches…

Kelly: Yee-Haw! I F-LOVE her books.

Gaaaaahhhh!!! That blurb was like a sucker-punch!! I LOVE IT!

Look what else we found! (NOTE: some are bargain priced when I added them, but prices can change on Amazon, so make sure to check before you finalize your order. Sales listed are for Amazon U.S., however some of the Amazon UK links also reflect the sale!):

  • Punk 57 by Penelope Douglas <— OKAY so of course I’ll start out this list with this one, ’cause OH MY IT SOUNDS LIKE IT WILL BE DELIGHTFULLY INFURIATING & ANGSTY!!! They were pen pals for years but when he finally saw her, he hated her?!! YIKES!!! “Her letters are always on black paper with silver writing. Sometimes there’s one a week or three in a day, but I need them. She’s the only one who keeps me on track, talks me down, and accepts everything I am. We only had three rules. No social media, no phone numbers, no pictures. We had a good thing going. Why ruin it? Until I run across a photo of a girl online. Name’s Ryen, loves Gallo’s pizza, and worships her iPhone. What are the chances? F*ck it. I need to meet her. I just don’t expect to hate what I find.” <—- eek EEEEEEP!!!! (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Dragons Need Love, Too (I Like Big Dragons Series Book 2) by Lani Lynn Vale <— LIVE!! SHE WAS RAISED IN A COMMUNE & HE LITERALLY SWOOPS IN AND CLAIMS HER AS HIS MATE ALERT!! “Brooklyn just wants to be free to make her own decisions and live her life as she pleases. But in her quest to save herself from the limitations of her old commune life, she lands herself in a dangerous situation, and Nikolai swoops in to her rescue, throwing her on the back of his dragon and flying off into the night. He’s a man-with-a-plan kind of guy, and she’s a fly-by-the-seat-of-her-pants (not on the back of a dragon!) kind of girl...” (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Marry Me Mad: The Rousseaus #2 (The Blueberry Lane Series Book 13) by Katy Regnery <— THE “NICE” TWIN GOES A LITTLE WILD and he has to save her (by the way, HE’S HER TWIN’S EX!!) “…an unlikely friendship is born between the rebellious librarian and the moonlighting pianist…and two broken hearts begin a journey toward being whole again.” (p.s. it can be read as a standalone!) (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Addicted (Tempting Book 4) by Alex Lucian <— JUST WENT LIVE!!! SHE’S AN ESCORT ALERT!!! “Elias was dark and tempting. Unmatched in intensity and passion compared to my other clients. He handed me cash in exchange for my touch, and he dug himself into my heart instead. Money changes things, firms up the lines of a relationship. But when it becomes an addiction—an all-consuming, life-changing addiction—the lines are completely obliterated.” (p.s. it’s super-bargain priced today and CAN be read as a standalone!) (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Closer to You (Grindstone Harbor Book 1) by Cat Mason <— LIVE! SHE’S A ROCKSTAR LOOKING TO GET AWAY & SHE WALKS INTO HIS BAR ALERT! It’s listed as a romantic comedy, too. I LOVE FUNNY! “The last thing he expected was for a woman to come into town and rock his world, but his beautiful new neighbor has a way of leaving him tongue tied and tripping over himself every time he gets near her. Bristol knows her time in Grindstone Harbor is only temporary. The recording studio calls and so does the stage...” (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • The Reason for Me by Prescott Lane <— LIVE!!! THEY’RE NEIGHBORS… 😉 “Annalyse and I have both lived in our own personal hells for half a decade. She’s learned to love the warmth, and I’m still consumed. But my new neighbor is stoking more than my libido these days. We agreed on only pleasure. But she changed the rules. And now I’m not even sure what they are…” (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • The Girl Across the Hall by Thayer King <— LIVE!!! HE’S A PLAYER BUT HE’S INTO HIS SHY NEIGHBOR… “Lately, he’s become obsessed with the shy beauty across the hall. He knows she’s not his usual type, but it can’t hurt to ask….” (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Dare (In Safe Hands Book 2) by S.M. Shade <— LIVE!!! HE’S A PLAYER BUT HE’S INTO HIS SHY NEIGHBOR… Yep… another one. 😉 I love the sounds of these! LOL! And it can be read as a standalone. “Ayda is a good girl who keeps to herself, and I have no business pursuing her, but I’m not a man known for doing the right thing. I’m an ex-con. I’m a criminal. And I want her.” (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Garrett (Bachelors of the Ridge Book 2) by Karla Sorensen <— LIVE!!! THEY HATE EACH OTHER ALERT! “Garrett and Aurora are pushed into a situation neither of them want to be in— forced to work together for twelve months or risk losing everything. Twelve months where they can’t kill each other. Twelve long months, and only one of them will be left standing at the end. And in the process of surviving it—and each other—they’ll discover that there’s a very fine line between love and hate…” (it can be read as a standalone!) (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Butterfly by Rebecca Sherwin <— LIVE!!! DARK ROMANCE ALERT! Intriguing blurb… I’m curious about this one! (here it is on Amazon UK)
Will he save me from his hell,
Or remind me just how hard I fell?
I once was Erin, fierce and strong.
Now this pitch black world is where I belong.
I’ve waved the girl I was goodbye.
Now I am his Butterfly…
  • Saints of Sin: MC Bad Boy Biker Romance by Eve Carter <— LIVE! BIKER BOOK ALERT (love triangle?) and it can be read as a standalone… “When newly graduated FBI agent, Jen Goodwin, goes home for her sister’s funeral, it’s only supposed to be a short trip. But two men from her past intervene with destiny. Brad Blackwell, ex-boyfriend and now a sheriff’s deputy, and Raz Ramsey, member of Saints of Sin, an outlaw biker club.” (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Halloween Treats by Alexa Riley <— LIVE!! TRICK OR TREAT!!! I have a feeling that it’s ALL TREAT. 😉 A NEW ALEXA RILEY JUST WENT LIVE (and of course, super-bargain priced right now!) “It’s Halloween and we’re bundling our wickedly dirty books together just for you! And BONUS… We’re including a brand new shorty to get you in the spirit!” (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Fault (Define Book 3) by Nicola Hudson <— LIVE!!! SHE’S ABOUT TO BE HOMELESS… “When Noah offers Grace a place to stay, it is an act of generosity that she has little choice but to accept. As they spend time together, their feelings grow beyond friendship and they become increasingly important parts of each other’s lives. But it’s not just their lives they have to think about and the challenges they face threaten to overwhelm their relationship…” (it’s super-bargain priced today AND it can be read as a standalone!) (here it is on Amazon UK)
  • Thoughtless by S.C. Stephens <— ANGSTIEST MOST EXCITING LOVE TRIANGLE EVER ALERT! ONE OF MY FAVORITE BOOKS EVER IS SUPER-BARGAIN PRICED TODAY!!!! Thoughtless on Amazon  LOL!!! Look at that old cover… yeah the cover has changed so much since then, but not my love for this book! IT BLEW MY MIND!!!!!!!!! BROKE MY HEART & GAVE ME MULTIPLE PANIC ATTACKS!!! My review! (here it is on Amazon UK)

Kathy: One of the first books I read on kindle.

Maryse: Me too!!! Actually I don’t even know if I had the Kindle app back then, but def. one of the first books I ever read in “indie” format

Traci: One of my top favorites too

Lela: Loved that series. Must read with wine 😉

Robin: Of course it is! Just after I bought the paper back because it was practically the same price for the ebook.

Teri: That is one of the best books ever. My first taste of contemporary romance angst! And like you all one of the first I read on kindle. But I still have the paperback of Beautiful Disaster.

Cait: God such an epic book loved it! Always fancied a drink in Petes

  • Traded by Rebecca Brooke <— *GASP*!!! This husband sounds infuriating! And it’s super-bargain priced today! “When you’re done with me, you can walk away with no regrets. That’s how my husband sees me. I try to be the best wife possible for him. After all, he took me on when no one else would. Now–he’s in debt and owes more money to the loan shark than we can possibly repay. But, don’t worry, he’s come up with a solution, it’s just not one I was expecting. …I’ve been TRADED.” (here it is on Amazon UK)
Lauren: Traded is AWESOME! I read it last spring & it’s on my re-read list.
  • Win Some, Lose Some by Shay Savage <— HE HAS ASPERGERS ALERT!!! Di-Ann enjoyed this recent release! (Here it is on Amazon UK)

Di-Ann: Just finished WIN SOME, LOSE SOME. Very sweet and easy read. I love Shay’s dark side but I really enjoyed her bright side!

  • Three, Two, One (321): (A Dark Suspense) by J.A. Huss <— DARK READ & THIS ONE GOES THERE ALERT!!! 😉 It even surprised Amy! 😉 (here it is on Amazon UK)

Amy: Man, this one is messing with me. *shakes head*

Jean: Amy! I’m squeeing over your book. I loved 3, 2, 1…..such a unique storyline! I’ll be curious to see how you like it.

Amy: Damn…Three Two One was good but I need a shot of Jager now.

Fabi: LOL Amy, glad you liked 321. It was kind of ‘out there’.

Amy: Fabi…I DID really like it! You’re right, it’s definitely “out there” but it was fun to get pushed outside of my comfort zone. ;) Yep Nay, it’s a menage book…I pretty much knew that going in, but HOLY MOLY! I didn’t expect it to go THERE!! *snort*

  • Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon <— OMG OMG THIS SOUNDS AWESOME SO I JUST ONE-CLICKED IT!!!!! SHE CAN’T LEAVE THE HOUSE & HE MOVES IN NEXT DOOR ALERT!!! “My disease is as rare as it is famous. Basically, I’m allergic to the world. I don’t leave my house, have not left my house in seventeen years. The only people I ever see are my mom and my nurse, Carla. But then one day, a moving truck arrives next door. I look out my window, and I see him. He’s tall, lean and wearing all black—black T-shirt, black jeans, black sneakers, and a black knit cap that covers his hair completely. He catches me looking and stares at me. I stare right back. His name is Olly…” AND!!!!! bev recommends THIS one!!! (here it is on Amazon UK)

bev: Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon… Seriously good price and a really good read.

Arwen: Loved this one…a bit of a twist late in the story, very well done! Loved the characters. Hope you enjoy!

Alissa: Loved this book! Such an emotional ride

  • Hausfrau: A Novel by Jill Alexander Essbaum <— PSYCHOLOGICALLY DISTURBING?!! YAY ME!!!! And now it’s official. BOTH R and Amy LOVE this book, so I’m reading it next. I’m in the mood for crazy! (here it is on Amazon UK)

R: I finished Hausfrau. Going to throw myself in front of a train now. Or shoot tequila. My options are endless.

Amy: R…do you see why I ended up holding my head and walking around in circles for, like, five minutes after I finished it?!? It was late at night and I was all, “how the %&$# am I supposed to sleep after THAT??” I’m so glad you loved it! :D

R: Hausfrau Maryse. Read it. I loved it an hour ago, but Amy just pointed something out and now I LOVE it. And I’m seriously disturbed. Taking Manny and none of you can stop me.

Amy: MARYSE!!!!!! *points to R’s comment about Hausfrau* *raises eyebrows* I think we need to hold off on the Marmy list until after you read Hausfrau…just in case you react the same way I did (and R did). ‘Cause if you do, it will need a spot on that list!! 😀

R: I’m having a Hausfrau bookhangover something fierce. Thanks for that Amy.

Maryse: I LOVE me a book hangover, R… definitely moving it up my TBR, and I’m officially on it. Maybe even next since I already one clicked it months ago… I’m on it Amy!! This time I promise!!!! :D

  • Between Here and the Horizon by Callie Hart <— THE BLURB DOES NOT PREPARE YOU FOR WHAT HAPPENS?!! *gasp* Oh, I love the sound of that, and DG is enjoying it as we speak!! (here it is on Amazon UK)
DG: Just got to say that I started Between Here and the Horizon…OMG!!! Couple chapters in and I was like …WTF! Definitely good…definitely not what I was expecting…I mean the blurb does not prepare you for what happens several chapters in! CRAZY different! But I am ALL IN!
  • Written in the Stars by by Aisha Saeed <— ARRANGED MARRIAGE/EMOTIONALLY TORTUROUS ALERT! My book-bud bev is being emotionally tortured over this one!!!

bev: You guys I’m a coward… I’m in the last 20 minutes of it and I’m stuck. I’m afraid to read on. I actually feel anxiety, lol. I kind of want to just read the end and kind of don’t want to know at all. I didn’t think it would hit me this much,I mean I’d feel empathy of course for any in this situation, but sort of a slow start and didn’t realize I had connected so with the heroine.

bev: I’m stuck.

Grey: Awww bev. *hug* *I* might be scared of that book… Never read it.

Maryse: Ooooh bev!!! *runs to see what the book is about* Oh nooooooo!!!! WOW… I can’t even IMAGINE being in that situation. Heart wrenching.

Ela: That is some freaky stuff right there bev…..you poor thing!

R: Dang Everything, Everything looks good! But bev sold me with: “I’m in the last 20 minutes of it and I’m stuck. I’m afraid to read on. I actually feel anxiety, lol. I kind of want to just read the end and kind of don’t want to know at all.” Don’t even need to look up the book.” Sorry that you’re all twisty bev, but this sounds super awesome-y. Take comfort that your pain is my gain 😉

  • Bittersweet (True North Book 1) by Sarina Bowen <— SARINA BOWEN (SEXY FARMER with a KA FEEL?!!) YES PLEASE! And Theresa recommends this one! (here it is on Amazon UK)

Theresa: Who knew farmers could be soooooo SEXY!!!!! I just finished Bittersweet by Sarina Bowen and it was a fun, sexy, feel good book that left me looking forward to the next release! The only warning I shall put out there is do NOT read this book if you are hungry because the home cooking was making my mouth water…so not fair to those of us that are not the best cooks in the world…reminded me of KA books! If you are looking for a sweet and at times sassy read then this one is for you…Enjoy!

  19. Pull Me Close: The Panic Series by Sidney Halston – October 25th 2016

Rachel: Rachel: “Maryse I was recommended PULL ME CLOSE by Sidney halston via Goodreads. They’ve been harping on it so much I ended up getting a copy from Netgalley. Now I see what all the fuss is about! MARYSE, it is soooo damn good. Maybe the author will give you an arc or something. Listen to this…she had a tragic event something you are NOT expecting and has been a recluse for years because of it. She ends up meeting a guy who owns a nightclub. But she can’t go see him because she can’t leave her house beacaue she’s agoraphobic! Gahhh. So good.”

Jean: Oh, oh, oh……Pull Me Close! Already read an ARC and absolutely LOVED IT!!!! Highly recommend!

Mia: First time poster, long time follower. hahah. But I felt compelled to write. Earlier this week you posted a pre-order that I’ve had sitting on my Kindle for weeks from Netgalley and finally had the courage to read it. It’s called Pull Me Close. I don’t like books with damaged h’s because they make me cry and I hate to cry. Give me a Rom Com anytime of the week, please. Anyway. Christ on a cracker! It was the best book I’ve read this year. I swear, I was reading about myself most of the time. The h has social anxiety and hasn’t left her house but the events are based on like…current things. It’s one of those books you shouldn’t know too much about before going into it. So don’t say anything if you read it! Anyway, it was gooood. now I have a book hangover and am going to grab my usual Rom Com (A little Penny Reid for me). *sniffle sniffle*

Amy: Hi Mia!!! *big welcome hug* Don’t be a stranger around here. :D And thanks for the heads up on Pull Me Close…whenever I hear we shouldn’t know too much before going into a book, it’s like catnip for me.

The morning book is Written in the Stars. I’m in the last 20 minutes of it and I’m stuck.

It’s payday! Yay!!! Thank God! So I get to buy a couple, now to decide what I want… I need to finish the ARC that I’m proofing but I have a headache and I don’t want to miss anything, so I’m gonna switch out …decisions, decisions.

So insanely jealous of everyone that is at SBC this weekend too. That would be my ultimate wish, to get to meet some of my literary heroes, pick their brains, get autographs and pictures…gives me the chills just thinking about it!

What is everyone up to/reading tonight?

Nay… “Marmy” is a combination of the names “Maryse and Amy” (me and Amy!! 😉 ) and it refers to the kind of rip-your-heart-out, gut-puncher, -crazy-twist, or “crazy-ending” type books that we LOVE!

I will quote Amy’s explanation of “Marmy” which is pretty much perfect:

She says:

“YEP!!! The Marmy twins always have time for book hurt!! LOL!!!

So, for the newer friends here…a Marmy book will *potentially* do any (or all) of the following: make your tummy eat itself from angst, make your chest clench from trepidation, cause splotches from anxiety, rip your heart from your chest before pummeling it and stomping all over it, punch you in the ovaries, blindside you with a sledgehammer-to-the-chest twist, or make you ugly cry and snuffle all over Manny (our sweet, stuffed manatee). Also, there MAY or MAY NOT be an HEA…but we don’t do spoilers here so it could go either way. And we love ‘em both. 😉

BUT! Just because we both love the same book doesn’t make it a Marmy book. For example Cocky Bastard or On the Island (hey, there’s one for the low-angst list!). Okay, jumping off my big-mouth soapbox now…”

Just finished reading “Win some lose some” by Shay Savage. Pleasantly surprised by the YA story. It was light, sweet and very uplifting. Sometimes I just need a angst free book to cleanse the palate. Wow! Last night I kept checking and there was nothing…crickets on here, and tonight, when I haven’t been checking, y’all have written a novel!! lol

Cheryl–I did the exact same thing with my oldest son last year during his freshman year at college–more than once. He was a wreck that first semester. Hope yours gets adjusted soon!

R–I just got on here to say that One True Loves is breaking my heart! But I love it!!!

Grey–I live for those books too! We could be Greynay Marmys!

Bev–I love most all of them–Death, cheating, love triangles–anything that rips my guts out; however, right now, I do try to steer clear of any death books that have to do with a heart problem. I was watching all the seasons of Grey’s Anatomy earlier this year and I had to stop because there were too many gravely ill heart patients (and if any of you watch Grey’s, I have the same thing that Izzy’s boyfriend, Denny, had for his bad heart, but at the time that I watched it, I had NO idea what it was, much less that I’d be getting one!.) Anyway–I LURVE angst!!!

Oh, and I’m listening to Everything, Everything on audio while I do chores around the house.

Grey–I did get Playing with Monsters, but then I realized that I have to finish Seducing Destiny, which I’m having a very hard time getting through for some reason, and then Ristan’s book. I did get about 30 pages of Seducing Destiny read, but I kept putting it down, and then, more readily available books were right there in front of me, so….

But I AM going to read it! I’m really looking forward to both it and Ristan’s books!

Ok guys, I am majorly disappointed here….I finished Bronze Horseman. Unfortunately, I did not like it. Holy way too wordy book Batman! That could have been like 400 less pages!! It was soooooooo boring and repetitive for me….

Oh well, at least I can say I have read it. Curious how my other Russia blankie fort occupants will feel.

P.S. Although most of it was very depressing (of course, hello? It was about the siege of Lenigrad) I didn’t cry (and I’m a major cry baby/wussbag) and only the very last chapter gave me the “feels” for like 2 seconds.

I am with you guys on stupid terms of endearments making me cringe. The whole “daddy” thing in Knight by KA made me GAG!! However, I swoon if it’s a southern accent saying “darlin'” (not to be confused with “darling”).

Actually, now that I think about it, it all depends on the H. If he’s likeable and super swoony he can get away with pretty much anything. One of my fave CRs (One Reckless Summer by Toni Blake) the H calls the H “pussycat” (stop rolling your eyes everyone!!) but it works in the context.

I always liked Buddy, different unique. But know many had the same reaction. When he first calls her that he is not meaning for it to be a term of endearment. It’s when he first meets her and it’s a slightly stressful moment.
I’m not sure I want to say that KA said a soldier called her that at a bar one time and she just remembered it, lol.
Darling makes me think of Cary Grant and I have no problem with that.

Punk 57. *sighs* It was so good. Penelope Douglas is an awesome writer and this just reminds me why she’s an auto buy for me.

The only pet name I don’t like is mom, mommy, or mama. That’s just a nope for me. I actually DNF’d a book that did that.

R. The play is insanely good. I saw it first for my 17th birthday. The actor for phantom kinda sucked, (he whined!) and the Christine couldn’t hit a high note to save her life, but it was still good. About 10 years later, I took my mom, and the cast was superb. We were both crying and loving it. 🙂

I’ve read the 1st 2 Cheryl. Yes it’s HS which is something I struggle with. Think Gossip Girl as in they pretty much *run* the school. Now, if you can see past that, it’s a fun angsty guilty pleasure that is a bit OTT soap opera-y in the best sense. I was un the mood for it so it was fun.

Maryse…EXACTLY. The writing style (to me) was just so matter-of-fact. I was addicted pretty much right away. I really liked how there were scenes from the present, the recent past, the past further back, and with her psychoanalyst, and how they were perfectly timed throughout the story.

Endearment terms…remember how Dex called Perry kiddo? That took some getting used to. It just made him seem too much like a dad, which was just creepy. Although once I fell for him it didn’t matter anymore. 😉

Cheryl, I read Black Swan Affair and gave it 3.5 stars. I was expecting angst and turmoil, and it didn’t really have much of either. It wasn’t bad, just a little mild for my taste. But it was fun enough to keep me reading!

Punk 57…OOOOOOH he is a meanie JERKFACE!!!! I mean, I get *why* he is behaving the way he is, but I also get why she is acting as she does. Not that I agree with her, I just understand with her being an insecure teenager and all. I’m only 30% in and really curious to see what’s in store considering how things are going right now.

Yeah sometimes when you go back, a book seems a bit dated and you wonder what you first saw in it it. Maybe our tastes develop and mature? (Like good wine LOL) Altho I have been on a bit of a HR reread fest lately, and funnily enough found I liked some of them more than before! What’s with that?

Leslie I usually don’t like high school books either, or bully books. I like some NAs, mainly college age. I could never get into Fallen Crest (I tried, guys, I really did). So I’ve kept away from the Royals.

I don’t mind most cutesy terms of endearment, in context of course. (except ‘buddy’ lol). Weirdly, I even didn’t mind ‘Daddy’ in Knight, even tho IRL it would seem really creepy. That book always felt a bit taboo for me. I liked but kept looking over my shoulder, thinking, hope no one’s looking. I shouldn’t be liking this. Weak, I know. It’s pretty tame compared to many others, but still.

Now I’m gonna look up One Reckless Summer 🙂

R. thanks for the info on Royals. Really don’t think it’s for me.

Amy, I agree wasn’t a high angst, typical love-triangle book. I think *for me* the emotional aspect heightened my anxiety on would she/wouldn’t she and ultimately what would be her decision. It also kept me guessing close to the end and about who the prologue was about and why it happened.

I finally got Gemina in today’s mail. Are you still wanting to BR with me or did you give up on waiting and read it already? 🙂 If you still want to BR, let me know, otherwise I’m going to keep tackling these ARCs on my list. I got two new ones yesterday. I really have to stop requesting them. Some I get automatically, but when I specifically request one I feel honor bound to meet the suggested review due date.

Fabi, I got my hubby Illuminae based on your rec. He loves sci-fi. I think you answered this already, but old me forgot. Gemina is the sequel, but does it follow the same story as book #1?Didn’t want to read the blurb, in case I end up reading it.

Dang Cheryl. I hope your hubby likes YA romance. Illuminae is not along the lines of Isaac Asimov sci-fi. It’s along the lines of Divergent/Hunger Games. 🙁 I feel bad. I would never recommend Illuminae to a die hard sci-fi fan. Hope he enjoys it anyways. 🙂

Now to answer your question. I haven’t read Gemina yet but it’s supposed to be a direct sequel to Illuminae.

Question, did you buy the hard copy?

Public Service Announcement: Where I live (central Massachusetts) besides my town library (as a MA resident) I have free access to Boston Public Library too!! You even apply on line. It’s awesome since Boston is huge city compared to mine, its a big selection AND they now have Hoopla which has TONS of audiobooks. ALL FREE BABY!! I was just looking at all of Maryse’s ‘What to read after…’ lists, and I saw ‘What to read after It Ends With Us’, and then I saw how many of you loved it and said it HAD to be read, so even though I’ve gotten many great recommendations this past week, I figure If there’s a whole list about what to read after it, it HAS to be great, so I’m finally reading ‘It Ends With Us’!

And, btw, I”m going in blind like Maryse suggested. I know absolutely NOTHING about it–I haven’t read the synopsis in months, so I’ve completely forgotten what it’s about. I’m so excited!!

I’m almost done Hausfrau and I love it. It’s such a moody and deep, often random and yet completely focused book. It’s so hard to explain, but the writing is exquisite and the story has me hooked.

Tessa–I think it’s hard to get angsty with characters that put you off from the very beginning. It happens to me quite a bit with books that others love, and it only takes one little thing to do it. For instance, like we were talking about the other day, the wrong pet name–if the romance book H calls the h ‘darling’ and he’s not European or maybe Aussie, he just totally becomes unsexy to me, and I find it very hard to finish the book unless it’s REALLY good. Interesting. I was just looking at the reviews. So, there is a connection to that Anna and Madame Bovary. Slate and The Guardian bring up the differences in circumstances though. In the first Anna ‘ s case she was stuck. But a modern women would have more recourse and they didn’t understand why that wasn’t more a part of the book. Why do you guys think this Anna was so passive when she could potentially have more agency?

Bev…honestly? Without her passivity, which ultimately lead to her downward spiral, it wouldn’t have been the story that it is and wouldn’t have the impact that it does.

Maryse and R could probably explain it with a little more depth than that, but I feel that’s all I can say without giving away too much about the book. It really does have to be experienced.

It’s more like her passivity led her to isolate herself which led to her internal struggles ad eventual decline, and she dealt with all of that through the affairs.

I can see some similarities between Anna K and Hausfrau, but to me they are minor and the two books shouldn’t be compared (as I know they are). Not by you, bev, but by reviewers. To compare them is to minimize Hausfrau, and that’s a travesty.

Okay…proof that not every book which obliterates our hearts is a death book. One book which I will not name by title (because spoilers) absolutely destroyed some of us and is a Marmy book, but there was NO death in it.

I fell in love With the Time Travelers Wife when I read it. Just so hard. I loved her writing, the premise, and her characters. I devoured it. I still feel bad for those who watched the movie instead, lol. There are scenes in that book I can still remember so clearly. Anyway, I wanted others to love it too. I gave it to my mom to read. Maybe a quarter of the way in, if that, she asked me why do you love this book? What is it about it? I don’t know that she finished it. I couldn’t believe she just couldn’t see it, it was all right there in her hands, lol. I’m pretty sure she felt that way about my love of Jane Eyre, too.
Anyway I guess I’m her here. I read some of the excerpts, just right over my head, so I was the “why” & “what” questions.

I know they have become synonymous.
So, to any newbies or anyone wondering a Marmy book does not equal a death club book. Death club actually came from somewhere else. I tease them about it because they are not afraid of them. In fact they love any book that has an uncertain ending.
Uncertain can mean more than just death. Any twist or mind f***. But also a hard won hea. Maybe just not a traditional hea.
Marmy book are just books that are extremely high angst and makes the reader feel extreme emotions. Sadness yes but also anxiety, fear, confusion, anger, and etc. Me Before You, Thoughtless, Jezebel, Hausfrau, Avoiding Commitment, Arsen, The Opportunist, and Rainfall all Marmy books.
I do have to say that I actually think the majority of those that comment and read this blog love a Marmy book and maybe a death club book too. I think us more conventional romance readers are in the minority here. Which is probably why I do not always understand you all.

Never Let Me Go…that one is being moved back up on my list after Tessa’s comments. Angsty? Heck. Yeah.

NaNo…kudos to you ladies who participate!!! I really do admire you guys. 😉

I’m cracking up over JAE not even realizing she’s playing 3 (+1) things!

My three things:
1. I love Maryse’s three things. For obvious reasons. *snort*
2. Bev IS adorable.
3. I’m jealous of R’s dinner.

Yep, my three things are not my own tonight and I don’t care. 😛

Me! Me!
1. I finished Never Let You Go and now I’m in a book fog, which is good because the tablet is low on battery.

2. I started The Bound by KA Linde anyway and read the first chapter, then decided to reread the first book and the second book’s first chapter seriously is going to skew the reread of the first, cause now, I know THINGS!

3. I’m tired but have found myself oddly fascinated by this show about hypothetical extra terrestrials and how they could get here, and why they would be here.

R, your so funny.

Ok, I shouldn’t ask because I still have not finished my last BR, and I am the one liking the book. I’m sorry Leslie, I fell asleep at 8 last night.
But does anyone want to do one next month? I have a book I’ve been wanting to read for forever and never get to and it would be the push I need. It’s An Untamed State by Roxane Gay.

Tessa, I think it will be a hard read. Many liked the heroine which is always a draw for me.

Jan, yeah. I bought it when it was on sale, like last year. But, at least here, it got a ton of buzz and Roxane Gay still does for her books, opinion pieces, & twitter, so I’d check your library. Maybe they have it if your interested.

I wish I could remember what it was called. Where is Bev’s memory when we need it? I only remember they were photographs of random hot guys reading books…on the subway, train, cofee shop, park, etc. Just random pictures taken and posted by anyone catching sight of a hot guy reading in public.

Thanks for clarifying Tessa. I thought you were crazy saying Bronze Horseman wasnt a long book.

An Untamed State def looks interesting, but I almost never read a non-romance book.

I love getting “lucky” at the library. *snort* I feel like I hit the lottery when a book I can’t afford is available for free!! Not to mention free audiobooks!! Love that!!
