Happy NEW RELEASE Day!! Prime Day is over (and what fun it was!!) But we’ve still got quite a few book-finds to explore (and a bunch that went live late last night that I added below). Like that SURPRISE Rachel Van Dyken ROCK STAR book over there to the right that was a total surprise! (Thank you, Tessa!!!) 😀 —–>
Time for my blurb-jolt list!! These are the ones today that have me salivating to read ’em!!! Steadfast (I love this author, and this one’s about a recovering addict, ex-con comes back to town, and her police-officer father doesn’t want her near him!), Deep Redemption (I need to catch up on the series, but book #1 was good, and the way my fellow readers are freaking out over this super-gritty release, I know it’s for me!), His to Protect (she’s homeless after escaping her abusive husband, and the restaurant owner finds her scrounging in his dumpster for food…), Edge of Glory (She’s a HUGE fangirl, and he’s an Olympic star, and she embarrasses herself in front of him), Luck, Love & Lemon Pie (<— OMG THIS ONE!! This sounds like it might be a little… “Taylor Jenkins Reid-like”, and it’s right up my alley! Marital strife, and loneliness, so she takes up poker-playing on her spare time and ends up doing well and catches a Poker star’s interest!! Eeeeep!!!), Crazy Stupid Obsession (she had a one-night and he broke her heart, and now her roommate is shacking up with his best friend…), and My Love Is Blue (an artist loses the love of her life, and becomes a reclusive, but when she needs to earn money teaching art, her new cop-student helps heal her heart…). Oh!! And Hottest Mess (I’m intrigued by what makes them so forbidden that they have to remain a secret… sounds juicy!)
P.S. ➔ Follow me (and Pimmie AND Hobbit – my sweet puppies – yep, I have a new addition!) on Instagram? That would be SO cool!!!
P.P.S. Let me know if I’m missing any or if you loved any (from this list or elsewhere). P.P.S. Don’t have a Kindle? No problem! Amazon offers various free Kindle apps and a free Kindle Cloud reader for any and ALL of us to use. You can either use the free Kindle App for your smartphone, tablet, AND your desktop computer (just like you’re using a Kindle, but right through your web browser <— No need to download anything!)
Now… take a look at all of the goodies we found (and I’ll keep adding as I find more):

Maryse, I got my hubby the iroomba for Father’s Day!! Haha, best “gift” I, I mean he has ever gotten. It’s great, I have majority hardwood floors and keeping up with the dust bunnies was ridiculous and it even goes under beds and furniture. 🙂
Cheryl. I want it BAD!!!!
IRIN CHRONICLES!!! OMG. I love that series. She is such an amazing writer. Elemental Mysteries is still one of my all time favorite vampire series, and Irin Chronicles was fabulous too. Definitely adding this to my TBR list. It’s a long one though, so I will need to be in the mood for 500 pages of awesome PNR.
What a list! But I am most excited about Deep Redemption! Been waiting for this one especially since this character is hated by all! Will Tillie change our minds about him? Awesome series!
A series that many like Guardians of the Realm by Setta Jay, the new book is called Storm of Ecstasy, and will come out this Friday 07/15/16
That iRoomba is a super deal today at Amazon. I’m not a prime member, but I might become one just to get that deal.
Sempre Redemption by J.M. Darhower has dropped to $3.99. That’s the lowest it’s been in a year.
Keep by Rachel Van Dyken just went live. For those who’ve read the Seaside stories, it’s Zane’s book.
Amazon US: https://amzn.to/29BBXA7
Amazon UK: https://amzn.to/29Xdgnr
Amazon CA: https://amzn.to/29zgwzN
Amazon AU: https://amzn.to/29zfunu
I have cats AND dogs at home. I don’t think I could live without my iRoomba.
Fire for me… For my kids… At 33 bucks. Come on!!!
I haven’t started Deep Redemption yet….idk why….I’ve been counting down the days for it to come out. I guess I know that once I finish, I’ll be wanting the next one. Wonder how long I can hold out….
56 percent into Edge of Glory and I figured out what’s bothering me. The heroine sounds like a fifteen year old, and she’s twenty. I don’t mind reading about fifteen year olds who sound fifteen, but twenty year olds? Even with strict parents? That keeps getting to me.
ugh, Tessa. I hate it when characters aren’t aged correctly. Whether it’s a younger character acting/thinking older or vice versa, it pulls me out of the story.
Where is everyone? I have an hour or so left at the office and I am B O R E D. I have one teeny, tiny thing left to do which I can’t finish until I get an email response, then…nada mas.
I let myself be convinced to finish my current read, The Temporary Agent, and wait to start Fast Connection late tomorrow or Thursday as a BR with a group on GR. Hope I don’t chew through my nails waiting an extra day or two.
Squeee Pia…so glad you’re reading it too. Santino Hassell and Megan Erickson are a magical writing team.
MichelleS, yes, a couple of the characters are ex-military. But the plot doesn’t revolve around their military career. Both plots focus on the character(s) at the point where they finish their enlistment and rejoin civilian life. It doesn’t focus on the military career at all. Only in passing mention.
I downloaded a sample of every one of the m/m books Maryse listed. I’m on a roll! But I can’t buy until I get a couple more read from my tbr. I’ve been trying so hard not to add to my tbr this year and only buy what I read. It has still grown some, but not outrageously like it did last year.
OK…His To Protect, Deep Redemption, Love, Luck and Lemon Pie…was thinking Edge of Glory but now want to see Tessa’s final verdict…
I’m a waffle. I keep going back and forth on what I want to read.
I want waffles.
I’m a waffle too…
Amy… Come Herr darling… tell me all about the first two days. I’m sorry I couldn’t wait up last night… Dang time difference *grumble grumble*. In case I miss you again, I’m sending tequila and limes… Screw the wine. I think you deserve something a little stronger if it’s been rough. *hug*
A couple are looking a little interesting to me…but not screaming my name… I dunno, I’m in the waffle camp with Bev, and not only because waffles are delicious and nutritious….
Herr? What my phone is German now… WTF?!?
I thought you were doing an accent, like a 40s screen actress.
Like, Come Herr daahling.
Ugh now I want waffles! There’s a good handful of them up there going on my tbr- the Irin Chronicles especially has me intrigued right now. Not a new release but recently rec’d to me that looks right up our ally is No Baggage by Clara Bensen. It’s really expensive for kindle but my online library had it and I’m in line for it.
I wonder what makes it so hard to choose sometimes?
Herr…so now I’m a German man?? 😛
Today was better. Exhausting and frustrating but I held in the tears. The sweet patients helped make it bearable. 😉
And dang! Prime Day and another fabulous list? Thank you Amazon and THANK YOU MARYSE!! Nothin’ better than to come home to the familiar comfort of a Tuesday list and my friends here chatting away. 😀
Bev…you know we will ALWAYS be able to empathize with that dilemma. A FIRST-world dilemma, true…but it’s still our dilemma. 😉
I started some creepy short book last night (not investing in a longer one right now :?) called Where Spiders Fear to Spin which I picked up for free not long ago, and so far so good. You just never know what will tickle your cli-…er, your fancy at any given time.
Amy, im sorry its been hard. Hopefully gets easier each day. Totally first world problems.
Probably just means that I should stick to my mini tbr. But going to walk away and see what comes to me.
Now I’m craving waffles. For breakfast with butter & syrup. At night with melted butter and then cinnamon & sugar.
It’s been forever since I’ve made waffles.
I also just got The Realm of You on loan so I’ll need to read that before anything. Has anyone read this and if so, thoughts? I read a few pages yesterday but had to finish my current read before I really got into it.
Why is my comment in moderation? Anyway, it is just saying Keep by Ravhel Van Dyken is live. It’s a Seaside book starring Zane.
I just picked up Desperately Seeking Epic by B.N. Tyler. It is on sale for $.99. I have been waiting for this one with tissues in hand!
Ooh thanks Kathy. I’ve been wanting that one too!
‘Cause you’re in trouble, Tessa. 😛
Thanks Bev, it will get easier and be worth it. OMG…waffles with melted butter and cinnamon sugar?!? Holy moly, I’m drooling now…
I knew it! *goes into the time out corner and pouts* Pure Abandon by Jeannine Colette is free today.
*whispers*
What did you do, Tessa?
Sleep with Travis?
Yummmm, waffles with lots of butter, syrup AND a side of crispy bacon…I so want some right now…can someone sneak me some here at camp?!?
Tessa…that’s how it starts…then them ole gremlins start changing your name…
Oh dear. You realize I could go by three other names and still be okay with that, right?
I… I…. I said Mason was sexier than Travis.
Noooo! Tessa…but, but Travis is the Travis….
Oh, maybe it’s that you dissed Travis.
Could you imagine if some were on here under more than one nam?
They’d be talking to themselves.
DG, Mason is THE MASON.
No, no talking to my other selves. Everyone thinks I’m crazy enough. 😛
Fabi, that is hilarious & true.
Yet, I’ve heard that people do this.
Well yeah…I talk to myself all the time
WHAT?!? Tessa slept with Travis?? Dude…I totally thought she was still with Mason.
Psssttt…did you guys also hear that Fabi is hearing voices and having conversations with them?
Man, the gossip is gettin’ juicy around here. 😛
I want it to go on record, that was not me Fabi! I haven’t tarnished your reputation in two days!
But…if Amy says it, it must be true!
Because Amy is really Maryse. You’ve played a long game, my friend.
It’s all beginning to make sense…
I did not sleep with Travis. I caught Maryse sleeping with Mason!
Oh my Tessa… and I didn’t even KNOW Mason. What a bad girl I am. 😉
The rumor mill is running rampant.
*whispers to self*
Such the rumor mill we have going on here. First, Bev is not Bev on GR, Maryse is Amy or is that Amy is Maryse and Fabi is talking to herself. Sounds like a book we would BR. 😉
Tessa, I agree about Edge Of Glory. I want to like it and I’m trying to keep reading it. Loved the blurb and the cover and was anxiously awaiting its release. Now the whole thing just feels juvenile. Was such a good premise.
Can’t keep up with who is sleeping with who around here….
Steadfast for me. The first in this series was good and I want to re-visit.
Rumours, rumours ladies. I go away from my computer and what do I find when I come back??? People have been sleeping around? What the actual hey???
I was thinking about Michelle S wanting book suggestions. We’ve all been there in that book funk. So I’m putting 5 of my fave PNR series out there to share. You’re probably familiar with them already, but there might be someone out there who’s not. And one of the best things about this blog is the fab books I’ve discovered from you all. So here it is. I’d love to hear your top 5s too (or top 2 or whatever). Always lookin’ for that great new series.
I know you’re mostly all in bed now but it’s still afternoon here in Australia. It’s a cold midwinter day and I’m in front of the fire 🙂 Maybe when I get up tomorrow morning there’ll be some great new recs for me 😀
Seven series by Dannika Dark. Series of 7 books about a pack of wolf shifters and their complicated relationships and adventures. Really well-written, imaginative and engaging.
Psy-Changeling series – Nalini Singh. Cross-over PNR/ sci-fi. Long series of books (up to 15 now, I think?) about shifters, humans and ‘psy’ (enhanced but emotionless humans). The early books are great adventure/romances, tho’ sadly as the series has gone on it’s started to get overcooked and pretty boring. But the early books are well worth a read.
Dragonflight series – Ann McCaffrey. An old school series I first fell in love with as a teen. The first two books, Dragonflight and Dragonquest are by far the best. The later books just don’t have the power and drive of the first two. ‘Clean’ stories (no explicit sex!) and you could argue they aren’t romance books as such (although there is some romance). But very exciting fantasy/adventure/sci-fi with wonderfully imagined telepathic dragons.
Alpha and Omega series – Patricia Briggs. Really well-written books about wolf shifters and other magical creatures. Charles and Anna are such a wonderful pairing. Sigh……
Captive Prince trilogy C. S. Pacat. FANTASTIC BOOKS. Fits more into the fantasy genre than PNR I suppose, although there is a strong romance element – tho’ it’s MM. It reads as if it’s set in an actual historical time period as there are no fantastic elements (i.e. no magic or dragons etc). But the setting is totally fictional – a pseudo-ancient Greek style world. A fantastic, involving read, really well-written. And Prince Laurent would have to be one of the best characters ever written – a complex, maddening, wonderful character you will be spellbound by.
Thank you for your paranormal favorites Jan. I’m going to make this a Saturday Reader Favorites post so everyone gets to see it. 😀
Just “one clicked” the new TJ Klune. Woo hoo. I love that guy. 🙂
STILL wanting waffles!!!! Can someone airdrop me some???
Tessa…ok, I believe you…because the MASON is just…yeah.
Not sure what to think about the Amy and/or Maryse thing…
*whispers to self…see Fabi does it also*
Jan – thanks for the recs. I adore D.dark and loved Mageri even better! I will read anythign P. Briggs writes. Mercy is my fave. But I loved A&O too. Agree on Captive Prince. Loved that. The other two I haven’t read so will check them out. I actually started a PNR that Fabi recommended. Fabi…. FAAAABIIIIIII.
ErMeGerd….. I love this book already. I started it late and had to make myself go to sleep. Sucked me right in. Wolfsong by TJ Klune. Thank you Thank you. I just know this is going to get me out of my funk. I can’t wait to get back to it. That’s a good sign.
Awww MichelleS, so glad you’re liking it.
Y’all are making me anxious to read it. I’ve had it lined up for what seems like forever, but haven’t gotten to it yet. Maybe this weekend.
I finished The Temporary Agent. It was awesome. Completely out of my reading lane. A suspense thriller revolving around our CIA, Homeland Security, etc. Definitely not something I normally read. It was my Prime book of the month pick. Definitely worth the trip down the new to me genre. I loved it.
But now *drumroll please* I’m happily diving into Fast Connection. squeeee
Teri every review I’ve read has been gushing about Wolfsong. Even people who don’t normally read PNR are loving it. The ones that do are saying that’s how a shifter romance is written. Please come back after you read it to let us know what you thought.
DG the more the merrier. 😉
Fabi – just drop what you are reading and start Wolfsong. It’s that good. I promise. Oh my gosh. I am absolutely hooked. Ox and Joe are the sweetest. I love everybody. I cannot WAIT to see what happens. I will keep you posted but I think you should just read it NOW.
You’re giving me an anxiety attack. Lol
Top PNR? That’s going to take a lot of thought. It’s my favorite genre. I have Wolfsong in my wishlist. I’m normally not an MM fan, but that looks good.
I’m tempted by Wolfsong too. I’m not usually a big MM reader either (altho’ I looooved Captive Prince). But the blurb looks intriguing, and it seems to be a creating of a bit of a buzz, so I might just jump in and check it out 😀
Quiet on the blog today.
Wonder if that means that everyone found something to read.
I haven’t had time to read in a week, and with Amy working her little butt off there’s no cocktail talk, so I haven’t had anything to say, but “hi.”
So, hi bev!
I’m half way through Steadfast – the follow up to Bittersweet for Sarina Bowen and I’m loving it. Its a slow burn and their lives are so seriously messed up I just can’t even see how this can be resolved. At this point I’m thinking it’s better than Griff and Audrey’s story – not so sweet – and a whole lot grimier (is that a word? It looks weird).
You’d think with it being summer, I would have time to read, but so far it’s been just the opposite. Still trudging along reading Edge of Glory. Keep hoping that it will get better. Just such an immature, ok read. I’m not sure if I like either MC’s. I’m at 80% so almost over.
Cheryl you’re a better woman than me, sticking with a book you don’t seem to love that much. I tend to give up easily if I get bored or if I don’t like the MCs. I know the feeling – you keep hoping it will get better – and sometimes it does. Maybe I’m just not patient enough. I have so many DNFs in my kindle library :/
Fashion blog I like to look at, the captions make me laugh. I haven’t read it, but it’s the ladies that wrote The Royal We. Anyway this tickled me for some reason. It’s Winona Ryder and the comments I read are all I can’t nitpick I love her too much, lol. I agree.
https://www.gofugyourself.com/unfug-or-fab-winona-ryder-07-2016
Cheryl I kept reading to the end just for the HEA, so I feel ya. I’m so happy to read Keep. A twenty year old who sounds twenty! Amazing, right?
I admit, I’ve also been doing the Pokemon Go game, so that alone makes me get up and wander the neighborhood instead of reading.
Be careful with that Tessa.
Tessa, I got an email re: Keep. Had to laugh at the cover. Not sure what he’s doing; is he trying to protect himself-kinda goes with the blurb. Did you read book 1?
I think I need a book with a little older MC’s. 😉
OMG, my kids and my hubby are doing the Pokemon game. Have to admit I like that it has them getting outside and walking around. Read somewhere that Pokemon Go has gotten kids moving more in a few days than Michelle Obama has in 7 years of her let’s move program. Ingenious!!
Bev, that’s what I said to my kids. They said there is a warning at the start of the game to always pay attention to your surroundings.
While you are all getting up and moving, I want to wish everyone a Happy National French Fry Day. 😉
The news has been crazy literally one minute ago on the local news. One of the stops is at the gates for housing for sex offenders. The manager is like, no don’t come here.
Then national news showed gun men in a car following players to still the phones.
But it does actually look fun.
Still = steal
Weird! We are having home made french fries tonight.
It does say pay attention in big letters at the beginning. I walk, stop and see, then walk, stop and see. lol Right now, I have to walk 8.5 km tomorrow to hatch an egg. lol I think the big thing is really, pay attention to your surroundings.
Cheryl, that cover… he is a virgin. lol So he might be. I’ve read the first one, and the other Seaside books, but it is a standalone. They are just different couple’s stories.
I read a short trilogy today of short stories, seriously wish the author would have expounded upon the characters and kept going. I was entertained… Anyway…
I was spoiled last week with my 5 stars, now I may have to go back to the spreadsheet…
Ok Tessa, I just installed Pokemon Go. We’ll see.
I installed Pokemon Go too, but it’s toooooooo hot, I don’t want to go outside to chase ’em. Can’t they just put them in my house? First one I found was right in my living room. It was a squirtle?
Gonna warn you, it’s addictive.
What turns you guys off from a story? If I see key words in the blurb or review that make me think death book, that’s a no. Triangles are also usually a no, I tend to think less of the characters involved.
I’ve read and enjoyed books with both of these but majority of the time I choose not to read these books. What about you ladies?
I don’t care for triangles either Bev. I’m also not fond of the so called “second chance romance”. For some strange reason, I hate the wasted in-between years.
Bev and Fabi. My turn offs are cheating…particularly if its the H and the cheating serves no other purpose in the plot than to torture the h (plus I somehow think less of her if she forgives him).
I don’t love multiple partner scenarios much either…Im kinda old fashioned, I think if a H loves his h he’s not going to be ok with sharing her (and vice versa). *shrugs*
I dont mind a second chance but I know what you mean Fabi…particularly if its been years and years. When We Were Strangers (R Carlino) was like that for me….I just couldn’t get passed the missed years and opportunity.
I can be hit and miss on manwhores too. All depends on his redeeming features.
I FINALLY started reading Fast Connection. At 1% I was already laughing. At 5%, I’m wondering how quickly I can re-read this.
I am OBSESSED with this writing duo.
Yeah a triangle in the blurb turns me off too. And second chance romance as well. LOL Bev. Same as you! Also anything to do with MC or their family or kids dying or cancer etc puts me off. Or if MC is a recovering addict.
Whereas I do like a well-told friends-to-lovers. That always piques my interest. Or a sweet innocent nerd falling for a hot, more experienced guy – I’m always up for that.
Things that turn me off in the first pages:
-potty mouth/ pointless swearing by MCs just to sound ‘cool’ (esp hate it in women – yeah I’m old-fashioned/hypocritical like that).
-instalust when it’s OTT – e.g. he sees the h across the room and immediately starts imagining his **** sliding into her ****. I usually stop reading right there LOL.
I like second chance, unless the h has been pining the whole time while he is off having a whole different romance.
I’m not good with gross out humor for the most part.
I’ll Dnf if too much in the beginning.
Also, the h and friends slit shaming other women put me off.
Omg phone. Grr.
Slit=slut.
There is an innuendo in there somewhere.
bev… your phone makes me giggle.
For FLT I’m going to do two lines. The prologue and then first chapter line, cause like that one better.
“I don’t want them to go.”
&
“In her junior year of high school, Penelope Madeira Marx, age sixteen going on seventeen, experienced for the first time in her young life the devastating, lonely – making, ass – kicking phenomenon known as heartbreak. ”
The Museum of Heartbreak by Meg Leder.
That’s a great first line Bev.
I’m going to cheat on my FLT and use the dedication instead.
Dedication: To everyone who has ever had to find a new normal…
Fast Connection by Megan Erickson and Santino Hassell
That’s nice, Fabi.
I’ve never read these but the blurbs sound good. Four book bundle FREE.
Heaven Hill Series Box Set (Books 1-4)
by Laramie Briscoe
Man, I want the new one Pennies from Pepper Winters. It comes out next Wednesday… the buzz makes it sound right up my alley…
Speaking of… TESSA!!! Guess what I found this morning. Penelope Douglas released a bonus book of extra stuffs/content from the Fall Away series entitled Adrenaline…on kindle for 99 cents. It is also a freebie on wattpad, if you do that. I cannot wait to fall back and get an inside peek into the world of Jared and Tate. Sigh. I miss them. I always need a good bully. In fact. That is exactly what I need today.
Today what I am searching for is a good bully book… recommendations my friends?
Grey… you read Ginger Scott’s “Wild Reckless” right? GREAT bully book and I want more like that!
https://www.maryse.net/books/book-review-wild-reckless-by-ginger-scott.html
My first line is from Wolfsong, which I am loving like crazy! I just want to savor it. “Ox was twelve when his daddy taught him a very valuable lesson.”
No FLT as I may be on Fish Tales forever. Not because I don’t like it, I love it, but I don’t want it to end!
Fabi, I’ve never really thought about what I like and don’t like, but the second chance trope? Huh… I LOVED Before We Were Strangers, but it nearly killed me. FOR the same reason you hate that kind of book, so maybe I have a love/hate relationship?
I think I don’t like triangle books, or cheating, but it’s hard to say. I wasn’t crazy about Em Wolf’s Tangled, and I won’t even go into “the book which shant be named.” But I think under the right circumstances, I’d be ok with anything. Except death books. No thanks. Unless it’s by one of my 3 fave writers, then there’s nothing I won’t try.
*snort*
death books.
I’m game for a wild ride as long as it flows and it’s well written and the drama isn’t contrived (or at least overly contrived). Mostly anything goes for me.
Great first line bev! And love that dedication Fabi!
Grey, I want Pennies too! Thanks for that info on Adrenaline! Getting it now!
Including 2 first lines since I just finished one and started another.
“I’d be lying if I said I don’t notice him enter the restaurant.” (Night Shifts Black by Alyson Santos). Guys! I absolutely devoured this book! I loved it! So real and unique storyline! (Tessa, I know you love when the rock stars delve into songwriting and the whole development of music…you would love this aspect of the book!)
And,
“There was a certain beauty in destruction. ” (Backfire by Keri Lake)…..just started, but so far so good!
Oh and as far as dislikes, I HATE CHEATING! I like second chance romance, but if there’s a long separation with lots of wasted time, it totally tears me apart!
I kinda like the triangles….heehee….but they do a number on my stomach. (Like the Thoughtless series….)
Oooh. Thanks on the Penelope Douglas update. It looks like her facebook goodies, which I e read most of. However, I love the idea of having them to re-read when I want.
Real rockstar book? Thank you Jean!
No FLT for me yet. I finished Keep yesterday (it made me do this 🙂 ). The book I was going to read next I’ve read already. I wish I’d made a list of all my KU books to keep track.
What turns me off? Right now it’s billionaires, step-brothers, and books split up that could have been one decent book. I also hate cliffhangers. And I agree about love triangles, not my fave, and the cheaters. Yuck. Hate the cheaters. And I don’t love the Cougar romances either. And I really don’t like the sharing (every PNR seems to have the twins falling for the same mate – ew! over it). Insta-love, unless it makes sense (like a good PNR where there is also a story). I don’t like gross sex scenes that aren’t sexy. I don’t like when a character has every guy panting after her (Anita Blake) or can’t make up her mind (Ranger vs Joe). Wow. That’s quite a long list. No wonder I have so many DNFs. LOL.
The truth is, just about anything will work if the writing is good. It’s all about that for me.
Okay, dislikes. MC doing drugs and it’s just “cool”. Whining MC. *shudders* Submissive heroes. Needy heroes. I think that’s my MM issue. The ones I’ve read, one guy is usually clingy or submissive. (By this, I don’t mean emotional, sweet, cute, or slightly feminine. Those things are fine in MM). Last, I’m with Bev. No catty slut shaming with friends by the h. I don’t like catty at all. (exception on catty is jealousy. I get stupid when jealous.)
I’m jealous. I was hoping to have one in my house last night because I wasn’t about to go outside in my pajamas to look for them.
If forgot to turn it on this morning. 🙁
I’m a moody reader… so what turns me off from a story? Gah, this is a tough one. My answer to this story could change daily – hourly even.
I’m addicted to the pretzel tummy, game for anything. As long as it’s well written, I will follow. The one thing I will say that really twists my knickers is … you guessed it. The dreaded cliffy. As a writer, I get it. The muse will pack up… and sashay her tight little fanny elsewhere, leaving you high and dry for what seems like ever. However, no one has forced you to release your first book. So… I guess my problem is, better described as the- unresolved cliffhanger. If the release date for the next book is in sight, I’m alright. But an unresolved cliffhanger… nothing makes me antsier…
I refuse to chase Pokemon. I remember when they came out the first time. I can’t believe this is a “thing”. A real “thing”. But, hey, if it gets kids up and out, I am all for it. Just not for me.
I am dog-sitting, so I should have time to read, right? Nope. they are wearing me OUT! I need to go finish Wolfsong because it is sooooo good.
I love right next to a park and it has a pokestop. As a result, quite a few appear in my house. However, most of them are rats, snakes, pigeons, etc. A few rare have come by though.
I don’t understand the Pokemon thing… can someone please break it down for me… *peeks out from behind my fingers feeling like an idiot*
Maryse, yep, I read Wild Reckless. *grins*
OMG, I cannot believe in the ridiculousness of my life I forgot about this book! Geez, I am almost ready to vote myself off the island…
FLT I’m going to give 2 lines because there’s a prologue…
Prologue
“An impenetrable fog cloaked the woman’s thoughts, seeping into her being, binding and erasing everything she’d ever known.”
Chapter 1
In a place without light, I began to heal.
Into the Light by Aleatha Romig. I cannot *believe* I forgot this released a couple weeks ago. I was so excited for it. Then RL happened and I had a bunch of other ARCs I was editing and reviewing then…IDK what happened. But I was just scrolling through my kindle and there it was…and bingo bango, there’s my book for today! YAY me!
Grey, you need to keep us updated on that one! Been hearing great things! Glad you found something you’re excited about!
Bev, did you see who got nominated for an Emmy?!!
OUTSTANDING LEAD ACTOR IN A LIMITED SERIES OR MOVIE
Benedict Cumberbatch, Sherlock: The Abominable Bride AND
OUTSTANDING TELEVISION MOVIE
Sherlock: The Abominable Bride
🙂
Jean that one sounds so good. I do remember reading the blurb. Not sure why I didn’t click on it. Maybe was in the mood for something more lighthearted. Adding it now.
My dislikes. Bad writing, LONG drawn out separations, weak h, cliffhangers, death/No HEA or HFN ending, don’t mind the triangle but have to say can tolerate it more if it’s the h not H cheating or involved with someone else.
FLT:
“WORKING FOR A professional baseball team was going to be the end of my love life.” Stealing Home by Nicole Williams. So far so good.
Grey, honesly, the Pokemon thing is basivally reliving tbe cartoon. Ash used to travel the world seeking trainers, gyms, and new or rare ones. That said, it also gives you an excuse to go outside and walk. *grins*
FLT:
“Jayden!”
Anarchy (Hive series) by Jaymin Eve
I’m trying to keep up with started series that I liked.
Here’s my FLT
“I had a secret: I wanted to leave the earth in a spectacular fashion.”
Midair by Kodi Scheer
It seems like a psych-thriller-ish type of book and it’s one of the Kindle First for Prime Members free reads…
Into the Light. 5 stars. “Twisty turny, mind pretzelly omg she went there” goodness… But it’s a cliffy. *bangs head off wall* however, not too long of a wait and I knew it was coming… And hot dang it was worth it. Not smutty… I mean there was a little tiny bit of heat, but no not really. Just wow. Started out kind of on the slow side then boom, run away train… I couldnt put it down.
YAY Grey!!! You’re on quite a roll!! 😀
Maryse, I was just scrolling through my tbr and realized I also picked Midair by Kodi Scheer for my July Kindle First. 🙂 I don’t know when I’ll get to read it since I already have a few lined up- so I’ll look forward to your review.
So far it’s pretty good, Fabi. But not unputdownable. I’m halfway through. 😀 More to follow…
Pass the chocolate & alcohol. Been that kind of day.
*kicks this day in the a$$*
That’s awesome Cheryl, and we’ll deserved. That is the episode I still need to watch.
*slides large box of chocolates and dirty martini across to bev*
More pet peeves/ no-nos for me – MC (no wait, ANY character) passing wind. (Mariana Zapata’s Under Locke, anyone?) Supposed to be funny but doesn’t work for me in any way.
Beta heroes.e.g. I couldn’t really love Colin in Snow in Texas. I need an alpha!
Dumb heroines who won’t stand up for themselves or who lack moral integrity. TSTLs
Yeah, cougars. I don’t mind if the man is older, even quite a bit older. But when the woman is a lot older, just no. Doesn’t work for me. (So sue me).
Yeah, hate cliffhangers too. Sadly it often seems like a cynical money grab – forcing you to buy another book. Annoys me, and if the sequel isn’t out it’s SUPER annoying.
Ooh Jan you made me think of one!! Kissing after h or H vomits. (Scope first please??!!) And sometimes hardcore kissing first thing in the morning bugs me, but that depends on my mood! And how hot the H is. AND if they do kiss in the AM, I don’t want to hear about how bad the breath is. TJR I’m talking to you.
Thanks, Jan.
I needed it.
Or when showers aren’t mentioned. Weird but sometimes a few days have passed in a story and(though it’s probably something to assume) I start to think when did they last shower?
I can do older H better than older heroine, too. I am not too attracted to really young guys irl and think that might play a part.
Lol bev. My hubby betas for me and he’s like, “don’t you think they shower and bathe a little often?” Haha. Nope!!
Lol.
Its one of those thoughts that creeps up on me. They go to bed, wake up & go to work, out to drinks, bed, work, etc etc.
And finally I’m like, when’s the last time they used soap? Don’t they smell after a drunken night at a club? Heck, in the summer I usually take two showers.
Or what about when they never eat?? They haven’t eaten all day, have a full meal on the table and decide on some sexy time instead. I don’t care how hot the H is. I’ll have my cheeseburger first please and thank you.
FLT…..
‘It’s a definite touch on my cheek.’ Sia by Josh Grayson
Starting DEEP REDEMPTION …..back home and ready to settle in and enjoy this one….BRING ON THE PROPHET!!!!!
Things I don’t like…cliffhangers, major time lapses : where the H and h have lost major time separated, love triangles, and unhappy endings..*whispers lowly that I still believe in fairytales*
Maryse, I know, if nothing else, it’s because I am listening to the recommendations of my super smart friends here and the spreadsheet LOL! I’m almost afraid to start another book because I just know that my lucky streak can’t possibly hold out…
FLT
At present, the primary role of phlebotomy is the collection of blood samples for laboratory analysis to diagnose and monitor medical conditions. ~ from my Phlebotomy textbook
Exciting, right? 😉
Miss you guys.
Ooooooh…I almost clicked Midair as my Kindle First book but clicked Everything We Keep, which in reading this weekend.
I was going to buy Midair next month but I’ll wait and see what you think of it first, Maryse.
Amy I love your FL! That’s reality. We can’t spend all day lost in our romance books, much as we’d love to 😉
I have 3 grown up sons and if I read a book with an older woman/younger man it just feels too creepy. Especially if the H has the same name as one of my sons LOL!
And yeah, the whole vomit thing or morning breath thing. Blechhh! Unpleasant bodily functions should never intrude on our escapist reading!
Oh yeah… kissing first thing in the morning. In bed. With no… teeth brushing. Another one that baffles me.
Last post and then homework.
Pet peeves…I’ve vented enough about mine so I’ll just give one:
Pulling on clothes (like panties) without cleaning up first right after sexy time…which didn’t include a condom.
Um…ew. 😕
“Unpleasant bodily functions should never intrude on our escapist reading!”
*fist bumps Jan*
I’m with you all on the pet peeves. And the body smells! I don’t try to picture it so please stop already. And one is never enough! He smells like leather, woodsmoke, and clean sweat? Ew. What does clean sweat smell like? And, yes, the post coital cuddling with no clean up. Gross. Or the quickie someplace else & the put her panties back? What? Drip drip drip. And one more. They have dinner. Say three things, then author says an hour went by & they pay. LOL.
Tee hee… yeah, MichelleS. Right there with you on the no clean-up and just right to sleep. It always perplexes me. I wonder… how? LOL!
FLT Chapter 1- “I spend each day in a care home in the suburbs of a large South African city.” Ghost Boy by Martin Pistorius. I’m currently in a funk and haven’t read for a couple days so hopefully this will pick me up. I may have watch some Netflix too to get my mind reset. 😉 Stranger Things releases tomorrow!! (New Netflix original series) Have you guys seen this trailer?! I can’t wait! I think all the above mentions peeve me when it comes to books. There are so many of the same things in all of them and we read so many so fast that I think it’s easy to get burnt out. One I haven’t seen mentioned that makes me roll my eyes every time is the dead parents thing. Maybe I’m not sensitive enough but I literally can’t stand it when they whine or behave a certain way bc of it or it cripples them emotionally somehow. Or even when a parent walks out on them as a kid bothers me.
Oh god sweat smell. Forgot that one too!! When did sweat become hot? I didn’t get that memo.
Also when the mc’s feel sparks of electricity when they touch for the first time you see a connection made. It’s too played out and unrealistic. Unless they scoot their feet on the carpet in their socks first, there couldn’t have really been electric sparks felt. Or I suppose if it’s pnr that can be factored in somehow. 😛
I don’t mind the scent. As long as it is not mentioned every page. If it’s mentioned he smells like spearmint from his gum or her like lemons from her shampoo a few times, that’s fine. Adds an extra layer to the scene or intimacy. But like I said not every page.
Sweat smells like sweat, I mean unless they are sweating out alcohol and that’s even worse.
I’ve mentioned this before but shaking their head yes. This doesn’t make sense to me. I picture a shake means no and a nod means yes.
I run across this often enough to wonder if I have it wrong.
*sweating alcohol* LOL!!! imagine what this blog would smell like! But with Amy working and Ela on the wagon, it’s pretty fresh yes? OK no. There’s still me. Sorry! *sprays fabreeze*
The Devil Behind Me (Devil Trilogy Book 1) by Evangelene is free today.
This! ” What does clean sweat smell like?” ROFL Seriously. Like, uh, not dirt?
New FLT because I finished the last one.
‘God save me from the Los Angeles Unified School District.’
Hardball by CD Reiss
I have to get back to that book soon, Tessa. I was enjoying it so not sure why I squirreled.
nods and shakes = yes and no
*fist bumps Bev*
even my dogs understand those
Maybe it’s due to a neck like a lotus stem? That’s not very complimentary.
I don’t mind mention of scents/ smells if they’re not gross. Yeah bev, clean fruity shampoo smell etc can add to things, altho’ can be overdone sometimes. But I’ve wondered about the ‘clean sweat’ before too. Um, wait, what? And don’t get me started on sex scenes where smells of male or female ‘musk’ are supposed to be erotic. Maybe OK in a shifter/pnr setting, but in a CR? My mind starts going THERE and it’s a no from me ….. I think I just threw up in my mouth a little. (When did they last have a shower…..? Or not?)
God yes…..the over share info on bodily functions and decriptions about his sweat smell….eewww. not sexy. And when they decribe his ‘musk smell’ *gags*. Cant they just smell like soap from the shower they just took before the h goes downtown??
No first line friday for me. Can’t decide what to read. ….which is akin to not finding anything to wear when the wardrobe is bulging…..my tbr file is HUGE but nothing is grabbing my attention.
Give me a number someone…please.
PS: Steadfast was wonderful. I just loved Jude…I knew I would. Think this one is better than Bittersweet or maybe I just connected with the MCs more. Solid 4 stars and probably one I’ll remember by years end.
I’ll be quiet now.
55
Thanks Bev. How alarming that there are more than 55 pages in my tbr file…..
So I can choose Sloth, Law of Moses, Sacrifice (Adriana Locke), Incandecent or Unruly (Cora Brent)…
Sloth, oh Lisa, go with Sloth… it was SOOOO good!
Ladies…Tillie Cole has done it!!! She has worked her MAGIC and turned it around …pulling for the much hated Prophet…39% in and LOVIN it!
Back to regular scheduled reading…..
YAY DG!! Okay I’m adding it to today’s list!
DG! I was wondering how she’d do it! I will definitely be reading that in the next week or so! But right now, I’ve been sucked in by Backfire!!!! Might even be better than Ricochet which I absolutely loved!
Oh JEAN!!!! I LOVED Ricochet so keep me up to date on #2 please!! 😀
Jean…not sure if there are even WORDS for how amazing Tillie Cole is right now…throw out EVERYTHING you ever THOUGHT you KNEW…the Prophet is unraveling mysteries! LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE, LOVE it!!! (Instead of 5 stars…halfway through I am predicting a BIG 5 Loves for this one!)
❤️❤️❤️❤️❤️
Maryse, Backfire…..so far, it’s unputdownable for me!!
DG, you have me convinced!! I’m ready to read Deep Redemption immediately after Backfire!!
Anxiety has started….tummy in knots…73% in and I feel like someone is sitting on my chest…OMG…she has gone ALL OUT…
ROFL And we were book married too! *cries*
