I’m currently working out what my next read will be. I’ve got TWO early review copies that I’m DYING to start, plus, I’ve been backtracking on my TBR lists and enjoying a few there too, so… anything goes, today! Maybe you can suggest one?
But from this list? I’m exceptionally *squirrely* over these: The Passage (I LOVE Post apocalyptic, and the trilogy finale was JUST released, so I wanna devour it whole!), A Certain Slant of Light (Ghost love story that had me judging it positively from the gorgeous book cover, but the blurb is even better!), The Dom Games (reality show where women have to be submissive to a certain Dom to win him, and she joins it just because she needs the money for school + I love this author!!), Wild Abandon (another author that I enjoyed her very risqué book #1 in this series, and this one reads as a standalone… he has a VERY dark past!!), This Old Heart of Mine (she gets another woman’s heart in her transplant, and now wonders who her heart is beating for…) <— Eeeep! Does she love the woman’s last love?
P.P.S. Let me know if I’m missing any or if you loved any (from this list or elsewhere). P.P.S. Don’t have a Kindle? No problem! Amazon offers various free Kindle apps and a free Kindle Cloud reader for any and ALL of us to use. You can either use the free Kindle App for your smartphone, tablet, AND your desktop computer (just like you’re using a Kindle, but right through your web browser <— No need to download anything!)

For those going on a road trip soon, or maybe you’ve got some projects that require both hands this weekend but still allows you to “listen”… check out the free audible trial + 2 free audiobooks deal —>
- AND! Here’s the fun-tool again! —> Find out which of YOUR Kindle books are available as audiobooks at a BARGAIN-PRICE! <—
This thing is so cool (Amazon calls it “Matchmaker“)! It’s an Amazon feature, that scans your Kindle books and will list all of the ones you have that are also available as an audiobook at a discounted price (not normal audiobook prices). This way, you can switch back and forth, seamlessly between your ebooks and your audiobooks. VERY COOL!

Do you remember the movie Mr. and Mrs. Smith? It was a favorite of mine so when I saw this title I had to take a peek. It starts off with a bang. A heart-stopping situation where your worst fears come true. Except, you didn’t know you had even more to fear. There’s a reveal that is so much worse. Not only heart-stopping, but heart-shattering. So much action, suspense, intrigue, betrayal. It hit the perfect spot after all the sweet and fluffy reads lately. This one had plenty of tough guys in explosive situations. So there ya go. My 2c.

So many great releases today! I’m reading Wild Abandon and absolutely loving it!
Thank you for listing release of Fear the Heart! 🙂 I’m a big fan of your blog.
I need to finish up a read.
But then what do I want?
No, really what do I want, cause I do not know.
Sherlock.
*snort*
Do we all want to choose a buddy read again? bev chose the second-last one, and it was AWESOME.
Do it again, bev! Work your magic!
I want to read Walk so so so bad. But I’m afraid I can’t since I skipped the tear jerker novella before it. Maybe someone will pipe up with whether it’s 100% necessary…
I’m going with Tapping the Billionaire next. Even though it’s from a list acouple of weeks ago. So many here loved it that I’ve been dying to read it. no squirreling, no no *shakes finger at mirror*
Okay I’m gonna ask on Facebook, Fabi. 🙂
Awesome Maryse. Thank you!
Jean is a genius.
Fabi! Guess what?!!
Cora answered, herself!! Tee hee! She said:
Cora Brent: “I can try to answer that 😉 No, it’s not necessary to read the novella, Cross, first. The events in Cross are summarized in Walk to get the reader up to speed.”
Oh my gosh oh my gosh oh my gosh
brb ………..
OK, I had to go 1 click Walk.
Maryse, you’re awesomeness is awesome. 🙂
Um….hmmm.
I think that was a lucky guess.
What do we feel like?
LOL!!!!!!!
I feel like something just like Undecided. Nothing crazy. No billionaires. Funny. Romantic. Good dialogue. Find us a good one Bev!
I got nothing like that MichelleS. I liked that author & new release& positive reviews ….so one click. I’m just not seeing anything like that right now.
But Maryse might know of some?
Or one?
In my tbr YA calling to me are Salt to the Sea (but may be sad) & The Anatomical Shape of a Heart.
In CR Rise by Karina Bliss (seen positive reviews for her) & Strong Signal (Fabi ‘ s rec)
Womens fiction Sofia Khan is not Obliged
UF (?) Menagerie also a Michelle rec
IDK what do you all have in your sight?
Beauty & the Rake is .99 right now. This has been in my tbr for awhile now. Now I’m looking at it.
*whispers to bev* you might like The Ship Kings – awesome YA fantasy series by Andrew McGahan.
Tapping the Billionaire @27% I think I’m having an honest to goodness fit. I’m laughing so hard I’m snorting and tears are streaming down my face. I can’t breathe. Oh my gawd. Beyond hilarious.
Jean first and the the rest of you who kept recommending this book. Thank you, thank you.
I would have never read a book with that title and that cover if not for you lovely ladies. I don’t know wth the title and cover are meant to be because they have nothing to do with this story.
bev… what about that other one she wrote that everyone is loving? With a heart on the cover?
I wanna read that. BUT it’s a bit darker I’m told ’cause he’s a REAL JERK
Okay Fabi… that’s the one for me. NOW.
You guys, let’s buddy read that one!!!
I just one-clicked it, and gonna start a bubble bath and that one. YAY ME!!!!!!
Omg, please tell me when you get to the 27% mark. I can’t remember the last time I laughed so hard.
“sit sit sit”
baaahaahahaha
Ok, Tapping the Billionaire Though I might finish the book I’m almost done with.
I don’t like the cover, lol.
That is Going the Distance, Maryse. One of my favorites ….last year or year before.
It is different. If I remember correctly I think I thought the ending could of been a bit tighter, somehow.
okay I wanna read that one too, but I’m in the mood to laugh like Fabi so I’m tapping’ that other one tonight. 😉
bev, I hate the cover – and the title
but it was initially highly recommended by Jean and then several other ladies read it and agreed. I’d have to scroll back through to see who all read it in the last couple of weeks. Jan? Grace? Gah, sorry ladies, I don’t remember. There were several of you and I clearly remember Jean’s review and gushing first.
Bev, I’m at 29% and if it stays as good as it is now – easy five stars
Maryse, this one has to go into the Undecided pile. Even though the characters are a little older. It’s exactly the feels.
Think Im going to dnf with Smut weirdest book ever….and I’ve loved ‘everything’ Karina Halle in the past. 🙁
I hate not finishing a book but Im seriously more concerned and interested in the outcome for Fluffy than either of these MCs. Im just not getting it……is this a new genre? One where you ridicule your readers taste (and possibly intelligence) for smut…then serve up exactly that hoping no one notices you’ve just insulted your readers again!! I know….satire….I get THAT.
But I love my smut….NA, CR and whatever other moniker you want to chuck on it.
I know these books arent going to win a Man Booker, Miles Franklin or Costa Book Prize……but my Colleen Hoovers sit proudly side by side with my Emily Bronte and Jane Austen. It’s escapism – pure and simple and isnt that what reading is all about?
Smut has left me feeling a bit put out.
*jumps off soap box and huffs off to coffee machine*
Yay Fabi and Maryse! I hope you love it! Fabi, that part! Yep, hysterical!
Just read Darkness Series this morning….it was REALLY, REALLY good! I went into it not knowing anything about the plot or characters or anything & I couldn’t put it down.
Thanks again Jean.
Lisa, I don’t know how far along you got in Smut. You’re right that it’s a satire. But it’s actually making fun of the people who make fun of those who enjoy reading romance/erotica.
I can give you lots of examples but I don’t want to spoil it for any who want to read it.
The problem I had with it was a bit of a slow down around 50-60%.
oops, didn’t finish
around 50-60% is where a couple of people dnf’d. Since I was BRing I kept going and enjoyed it.
Bev, Amy, and whoever else recommended Jellicoe Road- I just finished it only minutes ago and had to come here first and rave and thank you!!! Such an amazing, amazing book! It had absolutely everything I love in a book, and I’m not ready to say good bye yet…It had humor, strong characters, fighting, romance, mystery, and heart. GAH, the feels! And honestly I wasn’t confused for very long at all and really got into it pretty early on, even though I was afraid of it before ever really getting into it, which is great. 🙂 This one is for sure going on my list of all time favorites so again, Thank you!! 😀
P.S.- when you had rec’d it and mentioned the territory wars and fighting between the kids and stuff, I totally envisioned something like The Outsiders. Which I was obsessed with when we had to read it in high school. Even though the story lines are different and all, I still got all the same feels; so that was pretty great too, to feel that way again and get sort of a nostalgia about it. And I had gone in with high expectations bc I had envisioned that, and it totally delivered!
Tasha J, I am so glad you liked it. It is a hard book to to let go of. So many great moments. I loved the friendships that developed.
I was hoping it would work for you.
Fabi & Maryse I’ll be starting Ttb tomorrow. ☺
I want to finish my current read. I’m curious as to who the two of you think the authors are. I’m a bit nervous cause I saw mention of crude humor?
Tasha J SE Hinton! I haven’t read her books since high school. The two I remember are Outsiders & Tex. I liked how she’d do the friendships and the brother relationships.
Hey so this also released today and caught my eye: A Light In The Dark by Marla K. Benjamin. I believe it’s debut book for the author. A little about it: wife gets kidnapped and husband is in despair and doesn’t know what to do, and then she’s found. And what follows is a bunch of ups and downs and trying to get their lives back on track. My some up doesn’t sound near as good as the actual blurb, lol but I’m gonna give it a try.
https://www.amazon.com/Light-Dark-Marla-K-Benjamin/dp/1939371961/ref=sr_1_1?ie=UTF8&qid=1464145384&sr=8-1&keywords=a+light+in+the+dark
OK Fabi…Im taking your advice and pushing through.
Then I think I’ll try Sawyer Bennett’s new release or Until June by Aurora Rose Reynolds. This got my attention…sounds a bit Fisher’s Light-ish.
I had to go look up Tex quick bc I remember loving her style so much I read more books but not which ones. The only one I could remember after reading blurbs for sure was Rumble Fish.
Lol. I should look it up to see if it is the one I remember. It’s two brothers basically living on there own. Mom is dead and dad rarely shows. Maybe he is in the rodeo? Some thing that takes him on the road. Older brother wants to go on to college. Maybe named…..Mason. Maybe a chance at a scholarship from basketball or something. But then who would take care of Tex? Their dad favors Mason, for reasons. Tex is bf with neighbor brother & sister. They are always getting into trouble.
Man I can’t believe I remember that much, lol.
lol Lisa. I wasn’t trying to get you to finish the book. There’s way too many books out there to stick with one that’s not doing for you. I was only clarifying the satire. It’s an entire tongue in cheek about uppity ups that look down on “our” favorite genre.
Bev, I haven’t run across any crude humor yet but I’m not finished. You know I don’t tend to like that either. I’m more partial to dry witt and snappy dialogue.
Jean, you recommended Tapping the Billionaire first? THANK YOU! Definitely one of the better books. 🙂
Fabi, done with Apollo, and not a single disappointment. I loved the return of the one guy. That was funny. Ow. Love you too. Ow. Love you too. *snickers*
hahaha Tessa what a cute, funny character
Oh! You read TtB too. Kewl
That was really good, even down to the names, lol! I swear The Outsiders was my Beautiful Disaster in jr high, I re-read that book so many times! And then after I read her other books. I discovered there was a movie and then preceded to watch it repeatedly for days. I had the biggest crush on Dally, lol
Several great releases today, but of those several are first or second in a series- Sugar Daddy, Hanging By a Moment. Guess I’ll put them on my tbr list.
Bev, I feel like you. Not sure what to read next. Although A Light In The Dark intrigues me.
Matt Dillion was handsome. The casting for that movie was crazy. I read Rob Lowes memoir and I think that was the best part, when he auditioned, met the others, and made that movie. I liked his Swayze stories.
Ok, I’m finishing my current read and then jumping on the Tapping the Billionaire buddy read!! Yeh!!! 🙂
Woohoo Cheryl! I’m about to settle down and read for a bit before bed too.
I enjoyed TtB. Certainly some giggle moments. I really liked the H who is not the classic ‘alpha billionaire’ who has been done to death. (He worries about gas milage and car practicalities!) 😉
yeaa Lisa. I knew there was a bunch of you who’d read it. I was feeling left out. :-/
Maryse
You are gonna love the Passage trilogy. I’ve read the first two and am going to start the last one soon. Immerse yourself in that world!
I read an ARC of Wild abandon and enjoyed it, 4 stars. Parts truly had me shifting in my chair with my hand over my mouth for the the h… Poor girl!
Also read an older release… Black Widow by Lauren Runow, pretty sure a bunch here have already read this one. Hot and steamy with a good bit of mystery. 4.25 stars for this one too.
Need a new one to wow me, real life has been very very tough lately…
Fabi, lol. No crude humor? I’m like I’ll read for a couple minutes before work…..And it’s all about the penis.
Grey, hope things get better soon.
😮 Bev “the penis” is never crude humor
*snort*
Haha Fabi! Hope you all are enjoying TtB! Especially curious as to what Maryse is thinking!
Guys, I just downloaded a book that is on super sale (regularly $10.99)…..Angels Walking by Karen Kingsbury. Baseball star suffers career ending injury, hits rock bottom, and then takes a job in a retirement home and befriends elderly woman. Sounds so good! Anyone here ever read it?
Tapping the Billionaire is so good! Read it a couple of weeks ago and gave it 5 stars.
Finished The Bird and the Sword last night and really liked it! It was a great fantasy romance. A 4 star for me.
Sugar Daddy, Wild Abandon and Charged sound great!
Lisa I was hesitant to read Smut and after your post I know I am not going to like it :/
Ugh Sugar Daddy ends on a CH. At least the author warned us beforehand! I’ll wait till the other 2 are out to read it.
You know what I’ve been craving lately? A Shay Savage book. One of her prime male POV super good novels. I hope she’s writing, else I may have to start re-reading. *ahem* Surviving Raine
Fabi – have you read The Holy Trinity series by M Sheehan? It’s got that good gritty writing style, set in a dystopian society, with zombies, gypsies, and something else paranormal!!! Me & Amy are super fans. I just KNOW you’d love it. Oldie, but goody.
*reads Maryse’s facebook post* *screams in excitement* See! See! TWO NEW ARCANA BOOKS FROM KESLEY COLE! *squees and runs off*
Fabi – did you ever read After Hours? By C McKenna? It has a very Bastian like male lead. Slow burn. Loved it!!!
Tessa- HUGE Kreskey Cole fan (all her old stuff). Never read Arcana Ch. because it’s YA? Is it worth it for a KC fan?
Yes! Though, it is not like the Immortals After Dark where it is one couple at a time. It’s a continuous story like The Throne of Glass series. I absolutely love it, obviously. It is nothing like anything else I’ve read.
MichelleS thank you for the recs. I’ve read The Soul Mate. I haven’t read After Hours because in the blurb it says “…how much she enjoys submitting to his every command” <— that would just piss me off :-/
Nope, I think it's going to have to be Shay Savage for me.
Tessa, I haven't read the Arcana chronicles either. But I just looked and the story sounds great for when I'm in the mood for YA again.
Tears, Maryse? I cried during the end of Jellicoe Road. Pretty much through the last 1/4, lol.
This song the first time I heard it, years after it was released. I was out walking and just took me by surprise. I mean there were reasons it touched me so deeply at the time. Then put it on repeat. Still do when it comes up in my shuffle. It is beautiful, if you don’t know it give it a listen. His voice.

bev, I need to get back to that book… everyone loves it just SO much. I just need to get over my “confusion” hump.
Fabi / that’s a silly blurb!!! That is NOT what this book is about st all. It’s soooooo good. He’s a teeny tiny wee bit kinky – at nearly the end. Who cares? Nothing weird. But the burn is so good. I don’t often remember books like this, but I remember After Hours.
alright MichelleS, I’m going to take your word that she’s not “yes sir”ing or “yes master”ing him, or even worse, “beat me please because you’re such a hot daddy…”
Not for me girly. Remember I can’t set my Kindle on fire like I would a paper book.
Yeah Anne. Not realising at first that Sugar Daddy has a CH, I tried out a sample of it. Ugh! Be warned – the opening section is about a very disturbing and graphic flashback to a group rape incident of a 16 year old girl. I know it’s there to set up the rest of the story, but waaayyy too confronting for me. Wish I could unread that! And a CH as well? Nup. No indeedy. Not goin’ there.
Nope. Not a “master” kind of book at all. I loooooved this one. He’s the big & brooding quiet type!!! I think you’re gonna like it. It’s on my short list of books like this that I loved.., same list as Surviving Raine, which is why I mentioned it.
That’s the 2nd time I’ve seen SR on here tonight. Is it really that good? Should I move it to my short list?
Jean, that does sound good, but I noticed it’s a trilogy and the other books are expensive. Is it a standalone?
One more day and then I get four days off from school. Four days! To do nothing but read and catch up on housework and read and do whatever I want and READ!!! 😀
Okay, now to go and check out the pretties up there and the comments to see what y’all have been up to…
R. You haven’t read Surviving Raine by Shay Savage? It’s on my “All Time Favorites” list. There are 28 books on that list. I’m 50 years old and read about 15 books a month.
Now…have I convinced you?
lol Amy. I’d be feeling exactly the same way.
Alright MichelleS. I’m convinced. Just downloaded a sample. Maybe it’ll be my weekend read since I hadn’t decided on anything yet.
30% into Sugar rush and the prologue was eye opening and a bit of a shock. Im a total lame ass with anything confronting but I handled this only because the author uses the fog of drugs and past tense reflections to retell a rape scene. If it was first person and present tense it would have been unbearable.
Also the fact the victim isn’t portrayed as a weak victim and the book starts years later its been ok for me.
Im liking her and I see bloody revenge in her future 🙂
Anne I finished Smut and got some resolution to my griping yesterday. Please read it and dont veto on account of my ranting. Ive loved all things Karina Halle in the past and while this isnt a fave it wasn’t all bad either. 😉
Fabi! I’ll be checking out that list! Is it on GR? Moving SR up!! Yay 🙂
I just read Emma Scott’s Unbreakable and loved it. I like her like I like TJR, so she can do no wrong in my book. I know it wasn’t a favorite, and I think I know why, but Cory…just damn. Now I’m reading Tangled. I’m waayyyyy behind you guys!
Reading Tapping The Billionaire and the one scene where Georgia is riding the subway and sits across from the good looking guy reminded me of the scene where Blaire first saw Ronan in Easy Virtue. Wonder if one of the authors is Mia Asher?! Mia=Max??
No wait it was in Forget by N.A Alcorn that Brooke met Dylan on a train, similar description of him.
R, Renee, the list is on here. https://www.maryse.net/books/book-recommendations/reader-favorites-fabis-top-favorite-books-list.html
Duh!! Thanks Tessa, I didn’t even think about that!
😀 You’re welcome!
Has anyone read up to 43% of TtB? Where he does the mad rush from the subway to the taxi to breaking into his office building and smashing the elevator button 16 times? He’s such a lovable goofball. I just started reading and alreafy have a smile on my face. This book! It is pushing all my happy buttons. Oh wait. Nooooo Is Amy around? You KNOW I didn’t mean it like that. *sigh* back to reading
For those who watch GoT the actor who plays Jaime. Cute commercial, he is so handsome.
https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=-F6tUN2j0Iw
Thanks Bev. Love GoT.
Oh my god Fabi, How good is that book. I so loved it. Wish there were more like that. It just is great from start to finish, you can smile the whole way through.
As for Smut, just finished that. Really felt disappointed kept waiting for it to get better. 3.5 stars for me.
Ok, not to belabor the point, but I feel like the subway scene in TtB with the insanely good-looking guy that was reading a book that the H said was a total hipster and probably end up in Portland within the year and the h couldn’t wait to see him on on one of her favorite Instagram accounts, Hot Dudes Reading, has happened in another book I’ve read. Maybe a clue to one of the authors identity?? Or I’m over-thinking this mystery writer thing.
Fabi, I’m only at 18%.

Fabi, I’m only at 18%.
Cheryl!!!
Not sure if someone answered your hot-guys reading question, but it truly is a super-popular Instagram account, so a big publisher has released a sort of paperback “photo album” of some of the best ones. 😉
I’ll link to it on the Friday post.
Fabi, I’m so glad you’re loving TtB like I did!
Cheryl, Wild Abandon is a standalone. No need to read the first two books. Finished it last night and LOVED it!
R Renee, YOU MUST READ SURVIVING RAINE!
Cheryl, that scene doesn’t ring a bell with me but it’s because I haven’t those books you’re comparing it to. That would be cool if the authors dropped a hint inside the story.
Alright, I’m only at 10% but so far not connecting to them. But it’s really early and you all loved it and so probably a me and not the book thing right now.
idk I’d say don’t force it Bev. It grabbed me from the beginning. So if it’s not doing it for you there’s tons of other books waiting for you.
I dnf more and more these days. I find myself pushing through a book until I don’t even want to read anymore and start turning on the TV instead. I finally get to a point where I just can’t continue the story and move on to something more to my taste. I could have saved myself a lot of annoyance if I’d let it go early on when I first realized it wasn’t working for me.
*note to self “trust your instincts”
I pushed through with Smut Fabi and probably could have dnf. But I hate not finishing a book.
And I think youre right Bev….sometimes its where my head is at rather than anything about the book.
It’s early yet so I will still give it a go. I’m not completely done with my other read. I’m liking it but slow moving and so kind of reading it that way. Anyway since most of you have read TtB I’ll use the other for my FLT.
“You reckon he’s dead, John Henry?” –The Devil You Know by Jo Goodman.
I saw that Lisa. I used to be like that too. Before I started reading indie books I never dnf’d. Maybe 2-3 books tops in my entire life that I didn’t finish. But, books were expensive back then and there was often the only one book at home to read.
I rated Smut a little lower than Maryse. But I got a big kick out reading a satire in our genre. I typically only find those in classics or the occasional gen lit. I was impressed with the author’s ingenuity with the plot.
I like the Google doodle to day. That’s cool.
I’m going to hold off on FLT to see if Maryse pipes in with hers. I don’t think she’s ever listed one before. She hasn’t let us know (at all) what she’s thinking of TtB.
Oh no… I forgot to pipe in, Fabi. *sigh*
And yes. 😀 Yes my first line is from TtB… probably something about a penis. *snort* 😛
Do y’all mind if I get random on you for a minute?
I have to squee over the new addition to my bookshelf. I just added an Easton Press, leather bound, AUTHOR SIGNED, copy of Enders Game by Orson Scott Card. — After I stopped petting it — cause you know oils are good for leather (not because I’m a moron).
I can’t think of anywhere else I can squee about a book. My family thinks I’m insane and my friends don’t even know I read. (as much as I do)
So…
Squeeeeee
Fabi… I bet it smells SO good, too. Smell it for me. Nice and deep. 😉
Squee away, Fabi. Petting it for the oils….mmhmm. lol.
I think it is how she let us know she was reading WiR. And maybe another book. But not often. I think she likes to surprise with the review sometimes.
Like BAM look what I read.
Fabi…you got your happy buttons pushed, and now you’re pettin’ with oil?
*strangled snort*
Sounds like it has a happy ending to me!!! LOL!!!!!
FLT
“The thing about having nothing meant I had nothing to lose, and that’s what made me invincible.” ~ When Nohing Is All You’ve Got by Kirsty Dallas
Amy is Max Monroe.
aaaand there she is *snort*
Good morning Andy – oops, I mean Amy. 😉
Thanks Jean, for the SR push. I’m in the middle of an Emma Scott book hangover crisis at the moment and I had to put down Tangled (which I liked) last night and pick up ES’s LBW. What’s with the lower ratings on this one? So far I don’t get it. Anyway that kept me up until 3:30 am for the second night in a row for one of her books! I’ll get back to Tangled but I’m bumping SR ahead of it. Unless my buddy reader ever catches up. I say all of this like I have this power when we all know: we do not control our books, they control us!
“we do not control our books, they control us!”
I LOVE that R.
I AM IN A MAJOR BOOK SLUMP! DON’T KNOW WHAT TO READ NEXT! THEREFORE, I HAVE NO FLT!!! BOOHOO!!!
I’m kind of in one too, Jean. I’m reading Tapping the Billionaire (still) and while the writing is great, and it’s funny, and it’s moving along just fine… I haven’t become addicted for some reason.
Maybe I just need to read one that’ll scare me good… maybe that’s what I’m in the mood for. I’ve done a lot of romance in a row, maybe it’s time to be freaked out.
omg Jean! I don’t remember you in a book slump before. 🙁
Are you caught up on the Gentry boys series? Maryse has the latest release listed up there, Walk. (I haven’t read it yet)
Hahahaha Jean! It’s my dream to be in a book slump. I figure then I’ll get some sleep!
Andy? Max? Any other pseudonyms I have that I don’t know about?
Actually, if I wrote a book it would probably be a dnf’er for you guys. *snicker* 😛
Jean! Give us a range of numbers (1 to whatever) and we’ll help you pick something…that has helped me SO many times when I’ve been in a book funk and couldn’t pick one to read.
Okay, I’m just going to say it (please don’t throw flaming tampons at me, I’m not fireproof like Daenerys)…I don’t like the whole “two authors teamed up and are using a pen name” secret thing which seems to be becoming the newest trend. I just don’t. If you wrote it, put your name on it and I’ll most likely buy it. Otherwise, it’s going to remain an UN-click for me. OR, don’t advertise it as a bestselling-author/s-using-using-a-pen-name book. Let it shoot up to the top of the charts on it’s own merit. It’s a marketing thing…I get it. I just don’t find it fun. ‘Cause I’m a Scrooge. But I’m also the kind of person who gets annoyed with the “guess what!!” type of surprises…say guess what, let me say “what” and then just freaking tell me so I can be excited with you. Don’t try and get me to guess over and over because now I DON’T care. Paper Princess is probably going to be the last secret-author book I read.
Yes, I’m being a p!ssy byotch right now, but I love you guys and feel like I can be completely honest here without fear of being ripped apart just for my opinion. Our banter when we don’t agree can be pretty fun (and often funny), and I feel like this is my safe place. So, feel free to be honest and disagree with me…I *promise* not to get mad at y’all. 😉
Aaaaaaand now my tummy is in knots ’cause I just realized how whiny and b!tchy I sounded. 😕
Excuse me while I go hide in my naughty-mouth blankie fort…
Amy, and this is why I love you!! Believe me, I get it with the whole secret author, BUT if you let it deter you from reading Tapping the Billionaire, I will be sooooo mad at you! You have 4 days! Get on it!!!
Yep, me, book slump. Not even sure what I’m in the mood for….ugh! Finished Wild Abandon and really loved it! So I pick a number and count down on my TBR list? That’s scary. I have 1100 books waiting for me!
Amy, I don’t think the a paper Princess was that big of a secret. Or a badly kept one.
Amy, I agree with you. *gasp* Did I really just say that? 😉 I’m kidding. I really do agree with you. The only semi redeeming quality in the secret colab projects is that many (most?) romance authors use a pseudo name anyways. I’d almost rather someone not tell me their name than give me a fake one. So, I’m ok with them owning up and admitting it’s a pseudo name they’re using.
That brings up another point. Has anyone else noticed that Maryse’s is one of the few blogs where people use their names as usernames? Just another example of how awesome it is around here. We are so comfortable.
Yeah!!!!! I love our comfort level. 😀
Jean, sort your GR tbr by number. It’s easier to land on one that way than counting on your Kindle app.
Thanks Fabi! By the way, haven’t read the Gentry Boys yet, but I have the whole set and I bought Walk this week too!
You guys pick a number but I can’t totally commit. From 1-1000. Yikes!
I’ll do you one worse Amy (just so you don’t feel so bad). I don’t actually care who wrote the book. Tell me you’re real name, your fake name or no name at all. *shrug* How’s that for b!tchy?
If I have an author’s name of a book I liked I might take a peek at subsequent publishings. Otherwise, let each book stand on its own merits I say.
Jean, you haven’t read any of them?
There is no way Jean. I’d double check my read list if I were you. Those boys are SO VERY broken. I’d be surprised if it wasn’t you who recommended the series to me.
Nope, haven’t read them. It was YOU who recommended them to me. Wait, wait…..did you say SO VERY broken?!?! Magic words for me!
Jean, book #323. GO! 😀 I know y’all are loving TtB but it’s just not calling to me…not right now, at least. Maybe at some point it will? *shrugs*
Bev…right?? I know who wrote it now, and to be honest I liked it because of the actual book, not the names behind it. But the stuff from the authors on the GR page for PP and the next book also irritated me a tad. I still love the books I’ve read of theirs, and I will continue to read their books (or at least click them ;)) but most likely not the secret-author ones. Remember when JK Rowlings wrote under a man’s name, but right before the book was released it was leaked on the internet that *she* was behind the name…was it truly an unwanted leak (*snort* sorry…) or was it a strategic marketing move? If it wasn’t the latter, then that truly was awful to do to her. 😕
Amy… me too… I’m struggling through the initial penis-ness, right off the bat. LOL!
But It’s only the beginning so I think once I get passed it, I’ll hit the good-funny.
I am shocked! Honestly shocked. I would have bet my life that series rec came from you.
Well…yup, they’re broken. Nearly shattered. And the strength it takes for them to forge a life out of their broken past left me awestruck. Every book has been a 4-5 star read for me.
fyi guys…I DO know the difference between your and you’re, their and they’re, etc. My autocorrect, however, does NOT.
LOL Fabi.
I have a problem with “but” being substituted for “buy”.
I want to but that. *sigh*
“I’m ok with them owning up and admitting it’s a pseudo name they’re using” and “Otherwise, let each book stand on its own merits I say” EXACTLY, my friend. Jennifer Armentrout does that and writes as J Lynn, but she is VERY transparent in doing so.
And I don’t see anything b!tchy about what you said…some authors are automatic one-clicks for me (TJR, for example) but for the most part I’ll read a book no matter who the author is, unless I’ve NOT cared for their writing in the past. To be honest, when I read a book and love it, it’s because I forgot that an ACTUAL person wrote it because I felt like it was a real living, breathing story that had its own life force which made it come alive for me, ya know?
Fabi! I was just thinking the same thing about my autocorrect, LOL! I actually noticed I had “it’s” instead of “its” up there in my rant…and I, too, know the difference but my stupid autocorrect thinks it knows better. 😛
Lol Fabi! Gentry Boys have been moved up on my list, possibly even for my long 4 day weekend coming up!
So #323 is Saving Dallas by Kim Jones. Downloaded it 2 years ago. Anyone here read it?
Nope. But you need to. Now. 😛
Maybe our autocorrects are in cahoots. :-/
Jean, I was also thinking about starting a series over the long weekend. Then, of course, I get three (not one) books screaming read me, read me. *sigh*. Like R says, they control us, not the other way around.
Amy, I haven’t looked at their GR page or anything. But I get what you are saying.
I think JK really wanted to try writing those books under a different persona. And I’m cool with that. I think it could be hard to be successful and then try and change genres or stretch your wings without everyone comparing. But as a publicity ploy? Yeah, I get what you are saying.
Fabi, I know I have a couple books calling to me over the long weekend. Not sure what direction I want to go in.
Okay, so FLT: “Sitting alone in a bar, throwing back shots of jack was not how I pictured my Saturday night.” (Saving Dallas by Kim Jones). It’s only 238 pages so unless it ends in a CH and I have to continue to book 2, I will be jumping to the Gentry Boys series for the weekend……Fabi has me all excited about it!!
OMG, I typed this at 9ish? Fabi, I think this is the one place that will understand the need to pet a book. I won’t go into how I drooled over a non signed first American edition of The Sorcerer’s Stone. I can’t imagine with a real treasure like yours. 0.0
I think Maryse loves FLT. She also posted in facebook to ask what everyone’s FLT is before. Speaking of which!
FLT
Prologue: ‘Mercury was a cult.’
Chapter 1:’A fist crashed into Judd’s cheekbone.’
Caressed by Ice by Nalini Singh
I have a good reason to have two this time. The prologue was more to give background information. The second is the actual beginning of the story. 🙂
Now for now… *that doesn’t sound right*
Amy *hugs* You didn’t sound bitchy, just opinionated. As for autocorrect, try every time you type with it thinks you mean 28th. Why? I finished Caressed by Ice. I liked it a lot, though the series is no where near as good as the Guild Hunter series. Guild Hunters is insanely awesome. It came second, so I guess that’s just the author growing as a writer. 😀
FLT part 2
‘Well, this is the stupidest thing I’ve ever done.’
Dirty Prince by Vanessa Waltz
No opinion yet. I’m only on the first chapter.
Tessa… what is FLT? *snort* I’m so bad at acronyms.
Oh.
LOL!!!
First Line Thursday… got it! 😉
I wrote a lot… Sorry!
I think I’m going to publish an article…
“Take back control from your autocorrect”
*devising sneaky pseudo name*
Awwww Maryse, you and Bev both 🙁 That part went by so fast for me. Plus I thought the roommate silliness was cute.
“I’m currently accepting passengers to climb aboard my f*ck train.” Mercy F*ck by K.S. Adkins
Oh my goodness… *blink*
*blink blink*
WTH Grey?!?!
I have book envy for your special copy of Ender’s Game, Fabi. A fave book of mine, too. *wipes virtual hands lovingly over Fabi’s book*. (Hey, it’s OK – my virtual hands are clean!). My kids gave me an author signed copy of The Telling by Ursula LeGuin for my birthday. It’s now a very special treasure of mine.
I’m with you in the dnfing. I feel like there’s too much out there to waste on the mediocre, so I regularly dnf. I don’t feel honour bound to finish it if it’s nothing special. I just move right along and try something else.
Tessa I love Nalini Singh too, altho’ I don’t think Caressed By Ice is the best of that series. Have you read read Kiss Of Snow? Hawke – holy hotness! A much better book.
FLT
“Before she became the girl from nowhere – the One Who Walked In, the First and Last and Only, who lived a thousand years – she was just a little girl in Iowa, named Amy. Amy Harper Bellafonte.”
The Passage, Justin Cronin.
Oops. That’s two sentences.
I now have the brand-new, shiny City of Mirrors paperback, the final in The Passage trilogy, but felt the urge to hold off and re-read the first two again to fully appreciate City of Mirrors, as it’s so long since I read them. So I’ve re-started The Passage and am fully hooked again already. Wow. That wonderful feeling of diving into an incredible, memorable book is coming over me again. There is NOTHING IN THE WORLD like reading a really good book. I’m a happy addict. Sigh ….
Um… I can’t even compete with Grey’s FLT up there. But you just know I had to go and look that one up. ** chuckle **
“If I could sleep, I’d dream it was 1729 again, and I’d save April Anne Fletcher.” – Waiting for April.
Yes. I am still reading WFA. But I have a good excuse. I’ve been volunteering for The Special Olympics and today was out meet. Man. You guys, if you have never volunteered, you absolutely MUST put it on your bucket list. So amazing.
That is so wonderful MichelleS!!!! 😀
I’m slowly going through them. I am getting them from the library since they aren’t re-read material. (Then again, I did that with guild hunters, and guess who now has each book on her tablet. 😛 ) I’m pretty sure they had that one. Ice was lost forever, but they finally bought a new copy. Next time I go, I’ll get the next two if not more. 😀
Okay. I have to quote this.
“You know, that’s not how romantic gestures work. One, you actually have to mean them. Two, the girl can’t be your prisoner.”
“Sure they can. There are loads of Stockholm Syndrome romances.”
Hehehe. I’m loving this book.
Yeah the series is a bit inconsistent. Some books definitely much better than others. A few I’ve really loved and reread several times, but others, meh, I haven’t bothered.
The Telling by Ursula LeGuin – squeee 🙂
Jan mine was a gift from my daughter too, in the form if a GC since she didn’t want to pick a book for me.
Tessa, is that quote from Dirty Prince?
I’m still over here cackling over TtB. Their antics, omg, so funny and cute.
Maryse and Bev, did ya’ll get to the reveal part of where “the penis” came from?
Fabi, Yep! 😀 It’s definitely fun. The hero… *grins* He has an ego problem.
Jan, that seems how most series are. I’m still pleased with it, but Guild Hunter has one of my favorite couples.
Oh Fabi – at last – a kindred soul that loves The Telling. One of my fave books in the world. Super happy grin and mega squeee!!
Tessa – which couple is your fave (guild hunter) cos I haven’t read them all and I’d like to know which ones are better.
“I’m Kline Brooks.” Tapping the Billionaire by Max Monroe. Still slowly reading TtB.
Amy nothing bitchy about voicing your opinion. That’s whats great about here. I have some fav authors, that are an auto one-click for me, but otherwise I don’t care who wrote the book, just want a great story.
Grey I have that book on my tbr. Curious to hear what you think.
Oh god yes Jan. The Telling and The Left Hand of Darkness are huge favorites of mine. Ugh…you’re making me want to reread. It’s been so long!
Jan, Elena and Raphael. Their story is one of the few that makes my heart catch every time I think about it. I’ve re-read it so many times, and fall in love every time.
His friend? Yeah. Passed the penis talk. Now they are talking about saggy vaginas.
Maybe Tara Sivec is one of the writers? I remember she has that series, one had a hero who was a brony?
I read your comment Bev and busted out laughing. It took by such surprise. I don’t remember that at all.
Yes Fabi! The Left Hand of Darkness!! And last year I reread the Earthsea books and was amazed and delighted at how fresh they still are. I cried several times reading The Farthest Shore – now my new fav out of that series.
And thanks Tessa. Yeah, Elena and Raphael.
Ah, The Farthest Shore. I think the young Prince Arren would have to be one of the most wonderful fantasy heroes ever written. OMG, now I’m almost getting teary again. The ending of that book, when he’s exhausted, dirty, stumbling off the dragon’s back in front of the amazed crowd, but he has been to the farthest shore, and survived, and become a man. And a king. Wow. Oh, I want to read Earthsea again now!
Jan…you’re derailing my weekend reading plans…
😀
Fabi, there is a magical, poetic moment near the start of The Farthest Shore, in a secret courtyard of the magicians’ school on the Isle of Roke. Prince Arren, a beautiful golden boy on the cusp of manhood. Apple of his mother’s eye. Has been sent by his parents to make a report to the Council of the Wise. Ged, the Archmage, meets the quiet, unassuming young man beside the fountain. And Ged knows, even then, that Arren is the one, the one from the prophecy. But it’s not even overtly stated. Just implied to the reader. Events will unfold as they will, with Arren all unknowing.
And you just know … the whole incredible adventure will unfold from that powerful, key moment. LeGuin is such an incredible writer. That simple moment in that book makes my tears start at the beauty of it. Every time. Even now, just thinking of it.
Jan Jan Jan – after reading that, I swear, just put down what you are reading and start the Tairen Soul series. He’s king of the fey, a tottured miserable soul, ancient. Driven to madness at the loss of his mate in the Mage ears. He scorched the earth with fire in his grief (he turns into a giant winged fire breathing cat)… Stories have been told. He’s a legend. He never leaves the fading lands, they are shrouded in mist, protected from everyone. He’s restless. Someone is calling to him…. OMG!!! Jan. The magic. The lore. The pain & suffering. Epic. Truly. You will love it. I just know it.
Ears? He lost his mate in the Mage Wars! Lol. If you love the Fey, elves, mages, dragons. This is for you. My all time favorite.
Oh Maryse! I’ve been thinking scary lately too. I downloaded Look Behind You yesterday by Sibel Hodge (super sale)….the reviews are great and it just sounds good! Also, intrigued by Edwina by Willow Rose (love the cover!). Curious to see what you pick! I’ve been all romance lately too….definitely need to change it up!
Maryse! Are you ready to dive into last Hour of Gann then? It’s described as epic-horror-erotica! It’s scary. And awesome in every way. Might get you out of a funk. It’s addicting, for sure. I will never forget it. I could read a book just like that one anytime.
Last Hour of Gann is scary?? I didn’t know that. I’ve had it for months but am so intimidated by the length! Maybe that’s a good weekend read? Of course, I’ve been saying that about everything that pops up!
Jean – it’s dark, for sure. Nothing pretty or flowery there. Sci-fi, horror, gritty, dark, just sucks you in. It is LONG, you’re right, but I never got bored or squirrelly. I’m sooooo glad Maryse put it on a list and that I took a chance. Crazy good,
Maryse- I have to go look at that!! 😉
Don’t know if it qualifies as scary but I’ve been curious about A Light In The Dark. Th h is kidnapped. It’s supposed to be dark/haunting.
Yes Cheryl! That one looks so good!
I was just looking at the blurb for A History Major by Michael Phillip Cash. It looks like a mystery thriller. I think I’m adding it to my tbr.
Jean, it’s just not cheap and only has 2 reviews so far; BUT it really has caught my interest.
Yes!! Last Hour of Gann is fantastic! Thanks so much for the recs on here – otherwise I would never have read it. Loved it!! Yes, it’s long, but you really get sucked in to it. Scary at times, violent at times (but not just gratuitously – it’s an essential part of the story), an unusual but very powerful (and sexy) love story, an epic adventure, and finally quite uplifting. A great story and you never know what’s going happen next. Lots of EEEEEK!! moments.
Michelle you are very persuasive. I guess I will have to rip myself away from my reread of the awesome The Passage and at least read the start of the Tairen Soul series. Does sound like it’s right up my alley. Ooooh, quiet squeeee. Potential new really great series ahead for me. 😀 😀 😀
Jan, another rec towards Tairen Soul. I read it based on MichelleS’s recommendation and I’m so thankful to her for it *hugs MichelleS*. Seriously one of the best fantasy stories I’ve ever read. Some parts were so angsty to me I had to set it down and walk away or vent. lol
Oooh. Now I’m getting scared. I’m not good at angsty. But you gurls are powerfully persuasive. I’m definitely gonna give it a try. *rubs hands together in gleeful anticipation*
*** Jumping up & down & clapping *** yay! Another potential Tairen Soul fan. I remember EVERYTHING. Years later. It was that good. Stick with it. Can’t WAIT to hear if you like it. The heartache, the gut-wrenching scenes, the magic & lore. Gah! I want to re-read it every time I talk about it. The secondary characters!!! *** biting nails *** please like it….
Yeah I’m like that with the Earthsea books. I love them so much I want others to share in the joy. You’re getting me pretty excited. I WANT to love this series. Now I’m biting my nails too!
I’ve got some reading time today. (OK, you got me, I MAKE some time for reading every day….. 🙂 I’ll let you know how I go. But remember, I’m always honest about books I like… or don’t like …….
But no pressure, lol.
Nope, Tessa. I know. I just want to read it when I can totally immerse myself init. Not worry about other things I should be doing or other stress. Kind of a…hmm..just *sigh* couple days. I don’t want th a t piping up as I read it.
Jan – I’m always honest too. Now I’m goi g to go check out Earthsea books.
Super squeeeeee Michelle!! You can probably get them from the library as they’ve been around for yonks. I hope you love them too. *happy clapping of hands*
Classic fantasy stories, that have influenced so many other later writers and filmmakers. LeGuin was a true original and fantasy pioneer, in the sense that Tolkien was. And her writing is like poetry. The stories are so beautifully told, so poignant. So magical. The world of Earthsea is another one of those real places in my mind. So richly imagined by LeGuin. Aaah……
MichelleS? You haven’t read Earthsea? Huh. I thought you had. I read it years ago when I saw an ad at a movie theatre saying it was going to be a mini series. The series confused me, but I really liked Earthsea.
While we are at it, let me also mention the MythAdventures books by Robert Asprin. No romance, but hillarious. I fell for the series big time when I was younger. Sadly, he passed away, so for all intents and purposes, the series is done. 🙁 It was finished by his co-author alone.
Waiting for April, read it people!! It is a rollercoaster, I was sweating all over in some parts just dying to know what happens, such a good story and hoping it continues in a sequel, my fingers and toes are crossed!!!
