Guest Review (my sister!!) – Chained: Brides of the Kindred book 9 by Evangeline Anderson

By Leave a Comment

Chained: (BBW Alien Romance) (Brides of the Kindred Book 9)

Review by Johanne Pearl Couturier (4.5 stars)

Feels so good to be back to reading after so many months! Not that I did not read during those last months, believe me! But they were study books about the mortgage broker’s industry as well as real estate investment. Now that my classes and exams are passed, let’s get back to a bit of “feel good and sexy” leisure time!

Remember in the last review “Shadowed – Book 8”, I was telling you about a clumsy character? Well, as usual, Evangeline did not disappoint me, not in the least! Some of the goofs, you see coming from a mile, but that only adds to the fun of how it all happens! I was smiling and giggling a lot throughout the book but there is one part that made me laugh so hard, I was crying. So, for those of you who read in public (on the commute, at the coffee shop or the laundromat), you could get puzzled looks… or smiles! 

I cannot tell you any of the catastrophes Maggie creates without selling some punches, so I won’t. What do you need to know to read this one? Here: great sex, HOT guy (where oh where is my grrrr looking mate???), interesting characters (did I say already that Kor was hot?) and that great science fiction story that challenges our imagination and brings us in an awesome universe…

And now… I’ll tell you a little secret about me. Well it was even a secret to me before someone made me notice this strange habit. I often lay on the couch or have my feet up when I read and my body is usually still. But when I like what I read, my toes wiggle. At one point, my friend told me “My! This book must be really good because the wiggling of your toes is intense!”

So now that you know, I give Chained by Evangeline Anderson, 4.5 toe wiggles! Ha ha ha

P.S. Thank you to the author for sending me this review copy.

Rosalind James – Escape to New Zealand Series Reading Order

By 11 Comments

This post is kind of apropos considering today is the Superbowl!!! Er… well… actually my “fever” is for Rugby right now. In fact I think I have ALL BLACKS fever. I don’t even think it was done on purpose, but holy moly, I had to jump on the awesomeness and coincidence of the weekend.

P.S. Trust me… you want to click on EVERY single video link I link to. 😉 Keep tissues handy. ‘Cause… AWESOMENESS POWER EMOTION OVERLOAD. Just sayin’.

Okay so… yesterday, I went to the Native American Festival here in my area, and I was introduced to something I’ve seen before sort of in passing, and LOVED, but somehow… forgot in time. That said, it was reintroduced to me, via a live performance and I was enraptured. I couldn’t quite place it, but I KNEW I heard this beat… this rhythm and strength, this intense manly grunty language-song, before.

I LOVED it, and so I took photos of this Polynesian dance photo and video, and I posted it on Instagram wanting to know more. And when a fellow reader (from New Zealand!!!) excited about the images I took (just the fact that her New Zealand traditions were being presented to us, here), letting me know this was the New Zealand Māori Haka warrior dance/ceremony, it absolutely lit a fire in me to learn more.

From celebrations, to funerals, to threats… this is the most INTENSE, most touching, most REAL ceremony I’ve ever seen. And it MOVES me.

Maryse: Er… umm… can somebody write a Māori romance? With the whole Haka warrior dance and all? ‘Cause… just… *swooooooon* Or… you know. Even just a New Zealand Rugby team romance. 😉 That’ll work.

Angie: Yes. I love when they do the Haka. It gives me chills.

JM Walker: I’m just going to drop this here. 😉

Maryse: OMG I LOVE THIS JM Walker. What an honor. What intensity. I would have cried too.

JM Walker: Right??????!!!!

Maryse: This just calls my soul right out of me.

JM Walker: It so does. And watching the bride’s reaction and then the hubby doing it, GAH! It’s like a brotherhood and sisterhood and oh the chills. *sigh The New Zealand football (soccer) team does a Haka dance before they start their games. So amazing.

Maryse: I’ve been watching them on Youtube. I wish we could see one tonight. 😉

Linda: Seen a haka. Very scary, if they meant it.

Erin: Rosalind James has an entire series

Maryse: *off to look up Rosalind James*

Shannon: YES!!!!

Author Ally Parker: I love watching the Haka.

Natasha Boyd: Oh Maryse . I know. I grew up with Rugby, And I was supposed to support South Africa ( Springboks) and England ( the Lions) but dammit if my heart didn’t support the All Blacks every single time! ( I keep the AIG 360 degree HAKA app on app on my phone when I need a fix – no kidding). Also: Someone shared this with me recently and it moved me to tears. The students of a New Zealand teacher at his funeral :

Maryse: Oh I am SO going to cry… *off to watch*

Marie: Check out Rosalind James series

Crystal: This. Chills and tears.

Since then, I’ve watched a few videos and can’t stop crying and rejoicing simultaneously, so I can imagine what these book are going to do to me. I checked out the Rosalind James series. 😉

And all I saw was that she was in New Zealand trying to take a break (she needed to be rescued) and HE is an ALL BLACKS Rugby player. THAT is what I’m looking for!!!!!!!!

About book #1:

Everyone needs to be rescued sometimes.

Everyone but Hannah Montgomery, that is. She just needs a vacation. Three weeks in New Zealand to sort out her life, figure out what she wants, seems just right. Oh, and to relax. She should definitely put that on the agenda. She certainly isn’t looking for a sexy fling with a professional rugby player, no matter how attractive he is. Hannah doesn’t do casual. But maybe just this once …

As much as he’s shared with Hannah, Drew Callahan has kept one very big secret: that he’s the captain of the All Blacks, New Zealand’s international rugby team, not to mention the best-known rugby player on earth. And learning the truth, now that she’s back home again, has made Hannah warier than ever. Drew knows that she’s right for him. But how can he convince her to let down her guard enough to explore what they could have together?

Jay McLean – Kick Push Series Reading Order

By Leave a Comment

So many of my fellow book buddies LOVED this series BIG TIME. In fact, it was frequently included in the “Reader Favorites TOP 2016” lists. I’m hearing super angsty, heartachey, funny and unputdownable!

Fabi: I’m at 17% of Kick, Push and I have to tell y’all how great it is. I’m laughing, I’m crying, my heart hurts good and then it hurts bad. I am head over heels in love with Joshua. I was even reading parts of it out loud to my daughter last night just because I HAD to share some of the funniest parts. This is heartwarming and heartbreaking all in one. Beautiful, just beautiful.

Allison: I loooooved Kick, Push. Heart wrenching. I was NOT expecting the cliffie. But I felt like it wasn’t awful. It was the tyoe of ending where I was glad it was over because my emotions needed a break. I really needed to stop crying. My husband really needed me to stop crying. Lol. And I felt like it ended wrapped up enough that I wasn’t tortured by the cliffie.

Grey: It’s 230 in the morning here…just finished Kick, Push… I have very mixed feelings on this book… Warning, it’s a cliffy! Mostly male POV… Did I mention a cliffy?!? It made me giggle and made me cry… There was a super triggery chapter in there too…for those that may be more sensitive than me. I think my emotions may be a little skewed after Tristan and Danika in Rock Bottom today… Oh, and guess what…it’s a f***ing cliffhanger!!! Gah, I’m taking Manny back into the blanket fort. I legitimately have done nothing but read all day… Night friends!

Carly: Kick, Push & Coast are definitely some of my top top top reads. Although I just remembered I technically haven’t finished Coast yet.*Sigh* It’s still gonna be a fave, I can tell. I’d love to be able to experience reading those for the first time again.

Tessa: Oh! Coast. I have to say, Kick, Push paired with Coast makes a super emotional journey. It was one big roller coaster. I was sad; I was angry. I was happy and them swoon. It was intense. Loved it!

About Kick, Push:

There’s a single defining moment within every skater.
It lasts only a second. Two if you’re good.
Three if you’re really good.
It’s the moment you’re in the air, your board somewhere
beneath you, and nothing but wind surrounds you.
It’s the feeling of being airborne.

The sixteen-year-old version of me would’ve said it was the
greatest feeling in the world.
Then at seventeen, I had my son.
And every single second became a defining moment. Even the ones that consisted of heartbreak when his mother left us.

Seventeen. Single. Dad.
That’s what my life became.
Yet, every day, I managed to find that feeling of being
airborne.
Or at least I convinced myself I did.
But I lied—to myself and to everyone around me.
Until she showed up; Tanned skin, raven dark hair, and eyes the color of emeralds.

You know what sucks about being in the air?
Coming down from the high.
Sometimes you land on the board and nail the trick.
Then kick, push, and coast away.
Other times you fall.
You fall hard.
And those are the times when it’s not as easy to get back up, dust off your pads and try again.
Especially when the girl with the emerald eyes becomes your drug…
And you become her poison.

Reader Favorites – Antonella’s 2016 Top Ten

By 9 Comments

It’s Antonella’s turn and she’s been with us for a while!!! Since 2013 in fact. I’m thrilled that she’s a part of our crew, and now, she has sent over her favorites.

But first! Let’s get to know her, a little, shall we?

First: She’s from Sydney, Australia.

Antonella likes a dirty-mouthed hero. 😉 “I can’t get Matt out of my head and find myself going back re-reading bits. Maybe it is his dirty mouth LOL!”

She does “accents” while reading. “Did anyone else put on an Irish accent when reading Declan’s lines? Maybe it’s just me.”

She’s anti “Cheesy cover” 😉 “…I know you aren’t meant to judge a book by it’s cover but….can’t help it.”

A few fun tidbits about her Australian Christmas!

“My family are coming to have Xmas at my place for a good old Aussie BBQ (yep prawns and snags). And then hopefully the rest of the hols I can just read…..”

“My 4 yr old telling me he has 165 things on his xmas list and that Santa will know what he wants because he can read his writing (at 4 yrs old he can’t write well, so the page is a series of scribbles). It was very cute.”

And a bit about their favorite book:

“Santa’s Aussie Christmas. Great kids book where Santa comes to Australia for a holiday and goes surfing and meets all the animals. My kids love it.”

She’s a “can’t-put-it-down” late night reader…

Finished this last night (or really this morning) at 2.30am as I could not put it down…

…I can’t put it down but it’s 12.30am, I’m going to be a zombie tomorrow me thinks…

…I’m also 50% in and loving it, I couldn’t put it down but eventually had to when the clock said 2am…

…I wish I had more hours in the day too. I go to work and my eyes are popping out of my head as I am so tired. Hard to explain that it’s self inflicted because i just had to read the next chapter in my book or I had 10% left which couldn’t wait until tomorrow…

She was a reluctant “Dark Romance” reader once… but it appears she’s enjoying them now!

“I just read Keep Me Safe as I wanted to see what a dark erotica novel was all about and I’m a bit lost for words. The story was gripping enough to read to the end and you did feel for the characters but it’s just left me feeling empty. Guess it just wasn’t for me…”

“Tears of Tess by Pepper Winters is another great dark read/kidnap. I never thought I’d be into them but I am a convert.”

“Debt Inheritance by Pepper Winters, it’s brilliant if you aren’t afraid of a little darkness.”

One that always sticks out for me was Wanderlust by Skye Warren. I read it a while ago now but I still remember it being dark/taboo and wanting them to get together even though it was so wrong.

Her theory about TBR lists:

TBR lists are always going to be long is my philosophy, there are always going to be more super bargains to one click than I can get through. (I think I’m at 50, I tried to organize and it lasted 2 weeks).

I need to pick my next book to read and I have so many recommended ones on my TBR list that I might need to do eeinie meenie Minnie moe (not sure how u spell that)…….

About her 2016 “Best Of” list, she says:

“I know i’m not a regular contributor, being in Australia with the time zone differences I’m out of whack with the night conversations which happen when I am at work. But love reading your blog, reader comments and recommendations – it was the first blog I came across (and am still following) when I started reading a few years ago when I got my iPad and got into indie authors. I love finding a great book at a bargain price and am still swayed by a book’s cover.

In 2016 I set myself a goal to use Goodreads to catalogue/rate everything I read and write comments, so I remember what I was feeling when I read the book – although I leave my comments marked to private. Looking at the 75 books (both new and from the long TBR list) that I read in 2016, I had 10 that I rated as 5 stars which is perfect for a top 10 list! In no particular order……”

1. It Ends with Us: A Novel by Colleen Hoover <— Don’t need to say much with this one given it has popped up on quite a few lists. Ms Hoover knows how to pen a story.

2. Black Swan Affair by KL Krieg <— There were so many good reviews for this and was worried it wasn’t going to live up to the hype but it definitely did. This love triangle made me do an all nighter to know how it ended.

3. The Paper Swan by Leylah Attar <— This was a beautifully written book. It had a great plot with a complex hero that I am so happy got his HEA.

4. Lick (Stage Dive Series Book 1) by Kylie Scott <— The dialogue between the 2 leads was great, characters that talked and said what they were thinking. Can’t wait to meet the author at a book signing event later this year and read the rest of the series – which others have said are better than the first.

5. The Mason List by SD Hendrickson <— This was the first 5 star read for 2016. Another book that I could not put down as so much happened to them and got a little teary as well. I just wish the epilogue was a longer than 2 pages after the journey they went through.

6. Stepbrother Dearest by Penelope Ward <— Well, we all like something a little taboo and this one did not disappoint. Right amount of angst and build up with a good little twist.

7.Gemini by Penelope Ward <— After reading Stepbrother Dearest, I realised I had another Penelope Ward book in a book collection that had been on my TBR for a while. Wow – why did I wait so long?. I think Penelope Ward is becoming my new fav author. Another page turner with the right amount of chemistry between the H and H.

8. Hearts of Blue (Hearts Series Book 4) by LH Cosway <— This is the 3rd book from this series that I have read. Whilst the other 2 also rated highly, I think I liked this more because he was a bad boy and she was a cop – and when it’s wrong, it can be so right. There were some great lines in there about life – to make the most of it and do what you need to do in order to survive.

9. The Last Hour (The Thompson Sisters Book 5) by Charles Sheehan-Miles <— I had a box set for the Thompson Sisters and this was the last one I read. I balled my eyes out at the end of this one. I gave this 5 stars as it made me feel so much and I couldn’t put it down. Was in a bit of book fog after finishing it.

10. King: KING SERIES, BOOK ONE by TM Frazier <— This book hooks you in from the beginning. It is gritty and raw. King is the strong dominant alpha. Storyline is a little dubious, felt like an episode of Sons of Anarchy. Some of what goes on is a little wrong but entertaining in a perverted way. Ends on a cliff hanger, so buy the book bundle.

So many others that need a mention as highlights for the year – my first Kristen Ashley with The Will, the erotic Neighbors by Stylo Fantome, the funny (laugh out loud) The Substitute by Denise Grover Swank, The Off Campus Series by Elle Kennedy (we need some ice hockey players here in Australia) and the sweet Kick Push series by Jay McLean.

Thanks and looking forward to sharing in 2017.

Cheers,

Antonella (Ant)
