This exchange is overheard by the hero. Later, there is a fancy event. The girl from earlier, who was being talked about, approaches him, and he sort of thinks she is soliciting him, or something like that? It seems he is attracted to her nonetheless,

Jud is looking for this one and I love the sound of it. Sounds angsty (which I LOVE!!) and does it sound at all like… a Kate Stewart book? Like Drive? It’s been a few years since I read it, so probably not.
