“…now the jokes on me, because the scrawny lawn boy who I secretly loved from afar is now the director of Hollywood’s most exclusive summer camp.
And I’m on his staff.
Now it’s his turn to punish me.His turn to make me pay.
His turn to take his revenge after years of humiliation…”

- Whatever Happens by Micalea Smeltzer <— FRIENDSHIP W/ HER NEIGHBOR ALERT!! Kathy P recommends this one!
Kathy P: I just read Micalea Smeltzer’s, Whatever Happens. It is about a high school senior who moves to a new town after her younger sister’s suicide and the friendship she develops with her next door neighbor. (Also has elements of bullying involved). Definitely recommend this read. Not sexually explicit so if you have a teenager, this would be a great book for them or you to read.
- The Art of Racing in the Rain: A Novel by Garth Stein <— Kathy P recommends it & Michele G too (although I put her recommendation in the audiobook section below). My heart is already aching and I don’t even know why. Books about animals make me cry!!!
Kathy P: I recommend The Art of Racing in the Rain to everyone I know. It makes you reevaluate how you treat your precious fur babies, what they are thinking, etc.
Jess: I am reading The Art of Racing in the Rain 🙂 big time tearjerker.
Michele G: OMG, so good! I mean, don’t get me wrong, there were tears shed, but not necessarily the ones I anticipated.
- His Forever by Mila Crawford and Aria Cole <— LIVE!!! THE FAMOUS ACTOR & THE SOCIAL WORKER ALERT! “...Anna O’Rourke would do anything for children in need. She’d dedicated her life to helping kids in the system. Her once in a lifetime assignment isn’t what she expected. The Jane Doe baby she’s been assigned to might just be related to Hollywood’s leading man. Becoming overnight parents isn’t easy for anyone...”

She came back, and I could no more resist her than I could pry out my own heart. And by some trick of fate, she wants me as much as I want her. The only problem? She also wants the man who owns Thornchapel, Auden Guest. And so do I...”

But when Connor MacGuire turns up at nearby Santa Clara University, even Miranda begins to wonder if she has finally found someone she can trust...”
- Severance by NN Britt <— RECENT RELEASE & quite a few in our crew loved it and now Kim LOVED it too!

- Out to Find Freedom by Lila Rose <— OLDER MAN/YOUNGER WOMAN ALERT!! SHE’S BEATEN & BROKEN & HE’S HER NEW NEIGHBOR!! It’s a recent release AND on super-bargain. P.S. The author is today’s Friday Finds newsletter sponsor and she has the first 2 sneak peak chapters for us to read!! 😀 !!! “…Private investigator Ryan Warden doesn’t know he’s moved next door to people he would put behind bars in an instant. Nor does he realise a sleepless night could lead him on the right track with the case he’s working on. He certainly doesn’t expect Emerson Spence. What he does know is he has to stay away from her. She’s been beaten and broken. She deserves to live freely while learning and experiencing things in life like any young woman should. He’s too old for her. It’s better to stay away...”
- Right Before I Jump by Tammy Bench <— LIVE!! PARATROOPER IS NEW IN TOWN & HE JUST UPENDED HER LIFE… “…Young, idealistic and innocent. - Dark Legacy Series <— BULLY BOOK ALERT! BOOK #3 JUST WENT LIVE & Chelli LOVES this much-loved series too!
Chelli: Soooo I saw a little treat on your blog the other day that I couldn’t resist…you posted the Broken Wing series and someone mentioned it had that Fallen Crest feel to it, which of course meant it was “mine..mine..mine” it totally does has the Fallen Crest vibe with a little Brayshaw Boys. Devoured the first book and onto the second one. Not sure how I missed these when they came out but thank you thank you for posting them!!!
- The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo: A Novel by Taylor Jenkins Reid <— WE LOVED IT & now… so does Susanna!
Susanna: The Seven Husbands of Evelyn Hugo. That is all. Go in blind. Be transformed.
Maryse: Yesssss!! SO AGREED!! I loved that one so much!! :D!!! Here’s my review.
Leslie M: Evelyn Hugo was a very different book for me. I typically don’t like chic lit/fiction but Evelyn’s character was fascinating and her life story was amazing. What I didnt love as much was the present day part. I cant say my exact issue as it’s a spoiler…but it’s totally worth reading.
- Dirty Lovely Broken: A Dark Sci-fi Fairy Tale (Twisted Kingdom Book 1) by Emmy Chandler <— RECENT RELEASE & WE HAVE FEEDBACK!! Tessa LOVED it!
Tessa: So I finished Dirty, Lovely, Broken and OMG. It’s definitely dark and soooo good. Not gonna lie, hot too. Seriously though, dark readers will love this. I thought it’d be good, but it was really good.
Now, I’m torn. Broken Legacy: A Dark High School Romance (Dark Legacy Book 3) came out. Also, Royals of Villain Academy 3: Sinister Wizardry. BOTH BOOKS ARE BULLY BOOKS AND SUPER GOOD! Gah!
- Gretchen: A Thriller by Shannon Kirk <— PSYCH-THRILLER ALERT!! I don’t know how I missed THIS release a week or 2 ago, but I LOVED another creepy book by this author, so I am ALL over this!! SQUEEEEEE!! She and her mother have been on the run and in hiding for years… “...after thirteen years and eleven states, their next hideaway seems perfect. An isolated, fortresslike place in the New Hampshire woods is the new home they share with its owner, a gentlemanly pianist, and his lonely daughter, Gretchen. She’s Lucy’s age and soon becomes Lucy’s first real friend. But Gretchen and her father have secrets of their own…” P.S. Here’s my review of another book she wrote that I enjoyed: Book Review – Method 15/33
- Overture by Skye Warren <— CAROLINE FOUND US THIS super-deal!!
Found a fabulous freebie! First book in Skye Warren’s newest series!
- No Tomorrow by Carian Cole <— NANCY FOUND US THIS super-deal!!! 😀 I read it and it’s full-on angsty and intense!
Nancy: I can’t believe NO TOMORROW by Carian Cole is Free for 5 days!
- The Malediction Trilogy by Danielle L. Jensen <— YA PARANORMAL TRILOGY (it’s complete!!) & recommended by Caroline (actually posted below in the audiobook section also, since she listened to them).
Caroline: If you’re looking for a great YA paranormal series like Holly Black or Gena Showalter, this trilogy is a great read.
- Becoming Calder & Finding Eden by Mia Sheridan <— LESLIE M HAS HER MOJO BACK!!! She loved these!! 😀
Leslie M: I just finished Becoming Calder/Finding Eden by Mia Sheridan and guess what??? I LOVED IT!!!!!! It was super intense, emotional, angsty, swoony and book hangover inducing. I think most of you would love it too!
Maybe I haven’t lost my reading mojo after all???

It’s an Amazon feature, that scans all of your Kindle books and will list all of the ones you have that are also available as an audiobook at a discounted price (not normal audiobook prices). This way, you can switch back and forth, seamlessly between your ebooks and your audiobooks. VERY COOL!
- ➔➔ Audible now has an “Escape” package membership (30 day free trial)
- ➔➔ Prime members Audible for 3 months at a super-deal!!!
- Stolen Songbird by Danielle L. Jensen <— Caroline recommends these!!
Caroline: …I listened to it as audiobooks. Had me hooked with book 1. New to me author, Danielle Jensen. Three books in this series. She also has a new release in a new YA paranormal series. And an adult paranormal series with The Bridge series. Highly recommend this author!!
- The Girl on the Train: A Novel by Paula Hawkins <— I LOVED IT & now Nay does too!
Nay: I know I’m probably one of the last people in the world who hasn’t read or watched The Girl on the Train (hubs has even seen the movie!), but I listened to the audio book this weekend while I was cleaning through the stuff on the porch and I loved it! What a great mystery! I figured out some of it before the end, but there was plenty that I didn’t.
I’m doing more porch cleaning today, so I’m listening to Never Let You Go by Chevy Stevens. I’m about 40% in and it’s great so far!
- The Art of Racing in the Rain by Garth Stein <— Michele G LOVED it!
Michele G: I listened to The Art of Racing in the Rain because I wanted to either read or listen to it before I see the movie. OMG, so good! I mean, don’t get me wrong, there were tears shed, but not necessarily the ones I anticipated.
- Ashley & Nay are loving the thrillers in the Audible Escape program (P.S. You can try it for one month, free, with unlimited listening to all of the audiobooks and series in the program!! GASP!!!)
Ashley: I’m glad Audible now has their Audible Escape program, I’ve gotten to listen to books I may not have tried and I’ve also been disappointed by ones I was looking forward to – either way I’ve gotten my money’s worth out it (To date I have listened to 444 audiobooks through it and that doesn’t include relistens, I keep track on goodreads). And there’s other places to get audiobook deals too – I’m glad audiobooks are getting more traction.
Nay: Very few narrators can make me forget that it’s a woman doing the hero’s voice and vice versa. But if I’m listening to a mystery that has some romance in it, I do okay. That’s what I focus on with the Escape program. There are also some urban fantasies I can handle. I loved the Graveyard Queen series by Amanda Stevens!
Ashley: Oooo, The Graveyard Series is one of the ones I want to listen to next. I listen while I’m working that’s how I’m able to get through so many (and also anytime I’m doing yard work or stuff around the house). There’s a few people at work that listen to audiobooks (some of them found out that I listen to them and they go ‘I should do that!’).
Nay: I gobbled up the Graveyard Queen series! I love the Southern Gothic feel it has to it! I wish I could find another like it. Do you listen to any of the thrillers in the Escape program? If so, are there any you’ve loved?
Ashley: I don’t think I’ve listened to any thrillers in the package but I have listened to a few suspense ones. I really liked the Web Of Lies series by Kathleen Brooks. I also liked the Search and Rescue series by Katie Ruggle.

Good morning! Happy Friday!! ❤️️☀️
I’m adding Gretchen to my audio book lineup because it’s free with KU! Coincidentally, I almost started the audio book of Method 15/33 a couple of days ago but went with Furious, the first book in T.R. Ragan’s Faith McMann Trilogy, instead. I listened to some of her Lizzy Gardner series several years ago and enjoyed it, and Kate Rudd is her narrator, so I figured I couldn’t go wrong. Then I found that ALL of her books/audio books are free with KU. Yay me!
I’ve got a big weekend of porch cleaning and audio book listening planned, and I can’t wait! 😁
Oh, and I also picked Here to Stay for my Kindle first read.
Happy Porch Cleaning Nay!!
I LOVED Method 15/33!! I’m pretty excited but I have 2 books to finish first. Maybe I’ll try it on KU audible 😉
I’m leary of Love in an Undead Age. It’s an area I know well (considering I live there) and I hate books that are inaccurate. Though, there will definitely be room for flub since it’s 10 years after a zombie apocalypse. 😀 I doubt Starbucks will still be there.
LOL!! True…
I’m giggling to myself thinking about your previous rants when a book has been set in LA and the author has clearly never been there. 😛
YES! 😀 It’s frustrating! But I can see an apocalypse setting making it funky and not perfect.
Glitter aka Pixie Dust!
That’s me… about to twirl….
I’m in a kinda mini reading slump lately. I seem to start lots of books but struggle to finish them. I’ve been abandoning books left right and centre. I get to 20% or 40% or 75% and just, pleh, sick of ’em. I’m desperate for a really FAB new book. Lately everything seems same old, same old.
Maybe I’ll try Becoming Calder, but I’m not sure it will be my cup of tea. (Dare I say I dnf’ed Archer’s Voice?)
*ducks hail of peanuts*
GASSSSSSSP!!!!!
*thud*
*overwhelmed myself with the over-oxygen hyperventilitationing* <---- 😉
*quickly fans Maryse*
*waves smelling salts (aka dirty martini) under her nose*
*throws Archer’s Voice peanut at Jan’s head*
Jan, I get it! I feel like only a handful of books have worked for me out of hundreds. DNF-ing stresses me out but torturing myself to finish something I’m not into is awful too! I’m not sure if you will like Becoming Calder, but please don’t let your dislike of Archer’s Voice sway you. I try to keep an open mind about authors because I wasnt thrilled with some of Ms. Sheridan’s books and I loved this one. I feel like her books are quite different from each other.
*fans Maryse*
* catches Amy’s peanut and eats it.*
Thanks Leslie. I know what you mean. Sometimes I love some books by an author but not others. I’m a bit like that with Jewel E. Ann, actually.
I haven’t tried any others by Mia Sheridan so I’ll keep an open mind. I didn’t actually dislike Archer’s voice, but I just didn’t get hooked in to it. I’ve downloaded a kindle sample of Becoming Calder. Fingers crossed!
Like Leslie, I get it as well, Jan. If it’s not working for you then you can’t force it. I read (and loved!) becoming Calder, and it was such a unique read, so different from the norm of romance books.
And I go through the same thing with Jewel E. Ann’s books. I liked A Place Without You and When Life Happened but they didn’t rock my world…to be honest, without reading the blurbs I couldn’t tell you anything about them. 🤷🏻♀️ I have tried a couple of times to get into the Jack and Jill series but I. Just. Can’t. And I want to because of how crazy so many are on here for it! But the Transcend and Epoch duet? THOSE have my heart. I remember so much about them, scenes and feels and the beautiful, heart wrenching uniqueness of the story. That picture on Transcend now that I know the context of it…oh, my heart.
I want to like Jack and Jill too but I’ve tried a few times and just can’t get into it. My fav of hers is Look The Part. Really liked that one.
I know what you mean. I’m stingy with my 5* ratings but I haven’t had one all year. (And I didn’t love Archer’s Voice either) The best I’ve read this year is The Guy on the Right. It’s a slow burn but enjoyable.
Thank you JR. I’m going to have a look at Guy on the Right. I don’t mind a bit of slow burn. It’s KU too. Sweet!
That good?? Eeeeep! I can’t squirrel yet!! I gotta finish the one I started. I mean two. Two I started. And a third…
*eyeroll* I’m SO BAD.
*sigh* LOL!!!
Actually one will be done in the next hour or so… so I’ll be back to 2 started.
I finished Blood Orange and can say I definitely recommend it. It’s not a Marmy so it’s safe for everyone (unless infidelity on the h’s part completely repulses you), and it has a good amount of anxiety-inducing situations. I honestly had no idea how it would end, and I’m SO glad I didn’t read spoilers. When I hit the last part I was freaking out a bit and loved every second of it! It was no Hausfrau, but it gave me a mini Hausfrau fix. 😉
I see Book Bonanza is coming up and it’s too late for me to make it *pouts* but who is up for next year???
Meeting some of my favorite authors and meeting some of you IRL? Dream. Come. TRUE!
I’m so serious about this, ladies. This isn’t a wouldn’t-it-be-great-if idea, this is something I really want to make happen. Anyone?
But it’s in TX. They do have the info up already for 2020 for you. https://bookbonanza19.com/2019/06/06/book-bonanza-2020-author-interest-signup/ Just the info of where, but it’s a start!
I know, Tessa! 😀 I was so excited when I saw the info for the next two years, and the first thing I thought was how I would love for my ladies here to be THERE with me!!
That’s about a 25 minute ride for me!!! Woohoo. Need to put it on my calendar! Who’s going???
Do you mean next year, MichelleS? Because I am SO going, and possibly Maryse and Nay! 😀 Maybe we can pull Fabi out there as well since she’s in TX. I miss her. 😔
I would totally love it but realistically speaking, I could only swing it if it were held in Boston. It would be too hard financially for me to do a trip without the fam.
Amy, the more I think about this, I find myself being way more excited about meeting you guys than the authors!! I swear I would probably cry like a big nerd. You all would be thinking “Now I get why she has hard time with sad books….she’s a big cry baby”. Is it weird that I feel like I know Maryse already? Because we see what she looks and sounds like. Maybe someday we can all meet. I keep hoping Robin comes out here as they have some author thingy in Boston.
I want to meet you all so badly!
Through the years, I’ve met so many in our reading crew (different groups and “timelines”), except for you guys (well, I have met Ela!!) – and I would LOVE to meet you AND hang out with you. I love my peanut gallery.
I would love to meet everyone too, but not sure if it will ever happen. Still, never say never……..
*gives massive virtual group hug to Maryse and gang*
Leslie, you know Ela offered a sleepover and we were all going to crash there in tents, with sleeping bags. I’m sure it was Bev’s idea. 🤗😉
Of course bev did… 😂
Leslie, just think about it and maybe you could swing it after all. You have a year to save up for it. And I would be a big nerd right there with ya! All snotty crying and acting like a big goof…in other words, my normal self, LOL!
It’s too soon for me to do authory things but I go with Emma a lot. I wanted to try to swing COPA but decided on Book Bonanza instead since I can drive. If you consider COPA which is sort of closer to you, let me know. Several of my mermaids are trying to organize a lunch and some are blog girls who you’ll know!
What and where is COPA?
🎵At the copa, copacabana…🎵
Sorry, I couldn’t resist. *giggle* I need to stop playing on my iPad and get back to cleaning…
it’s a signing event in NY. https://www.copaauthorsinnewyork.com/
I’ii come, if you go Leslie. Next year. All the way from Australia. I love NYC. Just have to get holidays from work. That’s the hard part.
I’d be willing if I can swing the funds. I’d love to go!
Too late for me to make it, too Amy. But next year… I bet I can do.
Yay yay YAAAAAYYYYY Maryse and Nay!!! *giggle* That rhymed.
How. Freaking. FUN!!
I’ll be there this year. Michelle, are you going?
I’d like to try to go next year. Would be great to meet everyone!!!
I’m going to the Romance Writers of Australia conference in Melbourne next weekend. Should be fun. I went to the one in Sydney last year and had a blast. Rubbing shoulders with fav authors. Oh yeah. The Melbourne one has Nalini Singh as one of the headline authors. Noice.
I’m so jealous, Jan! Hope you have a great time!
That sounds great. How did you find out about that? Wow 😲
It’s on the RWA (Australia that is) website. They have a big conference every year. I think future ones are going to be Gold Coast and (maybe??) Fremantle. I loved it last year so thought I’d go again, especially as it’s much closer to home for me this year. My old home town.
Have fun, Jan! How lucky you are to go two years in a row. 😉
Australia…*sigh* I’m getting open water certified through a PADI course in September, and Australia is on my bucket list of places to dive.
In fact, there is a shipwreck in Queensland (the Yongala, I believe) I would love to explore, but I’m not sure I would be certified to dive that deep…plus apparently there are bull and tiger sharks there so I’d probably end up p!ssing my wetsuit if my heart didn’t stop first!
That is awesome Amy.
But dont pee they’ll find you faster.
Oh geez… 😖
Ha ha ha. you guys always give me a laugh. I hope you get to Aus sometime. Our beaches and oceans are truly incredible. OK, there are a few sharks too……..
You wouldn’t be alone Amy I think a lot of people do that in their wetsuit. Isn’t that how it warms up. 🤗I think you would be pretty safe with the sharks. Perth is another question. I have scuba dived in Queensland with the coral it’s beautiful. You can even snorkel there as well.
Good morning! I porch-cleaned and listened to Gretchen yesterday. I got halfway finished and sfsg, although one word come to mind as I listen: wackadoodle!🤪
I hope to finish it today—I’m looking forward to seeing where this is going!
Porch cleaning sounds wonderful. Now you can sit back and relax while looking at your lovely, sparkly-clean porch. 😊
It’ll be wonderful when I finish! lol Our covered porch wraps around our entire house, so there’s lots of room to store boxes and things that never made it back inside after we got our wood floors put down (last summer). I’m still working on it today, and to tell the truth, it’s probably going to take me at least another week to get it cleared. But I bought some bottled mojitos yesterday, so those and Gretchen are keeping me company today, and I may listen to Method 15/33 next. I’ll definitely be SO happy when I’m finished!
Mmmmm, mojitos. Great way to get through a project like that. 😉 Gotta love day drinking!
Maybe I should try drinking with my porch painting. Started with just the door trim and sidelights and has grown somewhat out of control with repainting the shutters, porch columns and the front door. Having the summer off from work is good and bad!! :>
Definitely, Cheryl!
I got quite a bit done today, and I finished Gretchen. That is one strange, wild book! And it got even more wackadoodle as it progressed. I’m still thinking on how I want to rate it. It took a while for the story to get going in an understandable way. It didn’t really drag or anything–it was just kind of confusing. The last 30-40% was great though. One minute I checked to see how far I was and it said 63%, and then it seemed like no time at all had passed and I was at 93%. I’ve got a $5 Amazon GC that I got from Verizon and I already own Method 15/33, so I’m thinking of paying the extra $3 and buying the audio book so that I can start it tomorrow for more porch cleaning.
I listened to Puck Me Secretly and Home Game by Odette Stone so far with painting. They are the two books before The Penalty Box. Good, funny low angst audio books. Listening to a book certainly helps, but maybe I need to up my game by adding some day drinking!!!
Odette Stone’s books are on KU 😀
I’m reading one as we speak, Jan!! 😀
Nay, that’s the third one I started yesterday (Gretchen). Two romances and one psych-thriller I’ve got going on all at once.
I’m trying to read Medicine Man, but the author’s obsession with Harry Potter is putting me off. By 2% in, Harry Potter has been mentioned seven times. I did a quick search of “potter” and it is mentioned 44 times!
And this quote: “Well, to be honest, Harry Potter isn’t a phase, it’s a lifestyle.”
I’m giving it another 5%, but if the writing doesn’t make up for this annoyance then it’s going to be a DNF. 😐
lol As a person who loves Harry Potter books… um, I get why you want to DNF it. There is a point where it’s obsessive instead of a quirk.
Exactly, Tessa! Ugh…
Did someone mention mojitos?? 😆
I bought a mortar/pestle today and a cocktail shaker last week. I need to learn how to make mojitos before the weather gets bad and I lose my fresh mint plants.
I like your thinking.
Freshly-made mojitos are drool-worthy. 😋
Refreshing and yummy! I haven’t made one since Keto, but I bet I could do it with my Keto-sugar…
