Latest Bargain e-Books & Reader Recommendations – October 24th 2014

October 24, 2014 By Maryse 129 Comments

I’m still in “moving-mode” (to my new house) so I’m still sort of… popping in and out of here (and in and out of my books). But it’s been soooooooo nice to sit and prepare this list and catch up with all of the latest book news. I miss my books and I miss reading for hours, especially considering today’s list. It’s exceptionally awesome looking. Some GREAT looking new releases, and some extremely excited recommendations.

Like… that one up there to the left. Prisoner. Ohhhh ominous cover and OMG THAT BLURB!!! SHE falls for a dangerous prisoner… Eeeeeep! And while I’m on a dark kick, Sociopath and Insidious are BOTH getting great reviews. And then there’s Here With Me (her presumed-dead husband comes back and realizes she’s engaged to his brother *gasp*!!!) and Beholden because it’s the apparently the “relief” to book #1 (Beloved) that freaked some out with a WTF ending! So that must mean I’m gonna love ’em. 😉 Oh and Riot (another bad-guy MC prisoner romance blurb that made me eeeep!). Plus… there are plenty more to peruse, below (including next week’s pre-orders!!)

P.S. Let me know if I’m missing any or if you loved any (from this list or elsewhere).

P.P.S. Also, while these bargain finds and new releases “look” great (and/or have awesome reviews and recommendations), unless I have my own personal review link next to it, I likely haven’t read it myself… I just found it and wanted to share it in case it’s awesome. So if you read it, let me know if it’s awesome. LOL! :D

NOTE: bargain priced when I added them, but prices can change on Amazon, so make sure to check before you finalize your order.

Todays latest reader recommendations and bargain ebook finds:

  • Prisoner (Criminals & Captives Book 1) by Skye Warren & Annika Martin <— JUST RELEASED and this is one of my FAV dark authors!!!! Oh WOW!!! That blurb totally jolted me! Eeeeeep!!! “He seethes with raw power the first time I see him—pure menace and rippling muscles in shackles. He’s dangerous. He’s wild. He’s the most beautiful thing I’ve ever seen. So I hide behind my prim glasses and my book like I always do, because I have secrets too. Then he shows up in the prison writing class I have to teach, and he blows me away with his honesty. He tells me secrets in his stories, and it’s getting harder to hide mine. I shiver when he gets too close, with only the cuffs and the bars and the guards holding him back. At night I can’t stop thinking about him in his cell. But that’s the thing about an animal in a cage–you never know when he’ll bite.“
  • Sociopath: A Dark Romance by Lime Craven <— JUST RELEASED DARK READ!!! This blurb got me when it was still on preorder and it’s finally out! Sounds like WAY too much dark fun and I want in!!! Lauren read it and says: “Just finished Sociopath….I don’t even know what to think right now….total mindf*ck. But in a good way.“
  • Here With Me (The Archer Brothers Book 1) by Heidi McLaughlin <— JUST RELEASED!! This is another blurb that got me a couple of days ago when it was still on pre-order! OHHH the angst sounds delicious!!! She thinks her military husband is dead, and eventually falls in love with his brother. BUT!!! He comes back and…”…After serving on a special mission with the military for six years, Evan Archer returns home to find the unthinkable – the love of his life, Ryley Clarke – engaged to his brother, Nate.” <—- *blink blink* WOW!!! And Toski loved it! “This book. OMG. It was just beautiful. Somewhat of a love triangle but with a tragic twist. I absolutely fell head over heels for Evan Archer! MUST read ladies…“
  • The Last Glass (The Creatures of Grimmsburg Book 1) by T.M. Lazar <— JUST RELEASED and Michelle recommends it. “This paranormal book released today and it is awesome and I don’t normally read para books.“
  • Blood Deep (Blackthorn Book 4) <— JUST RELEASED!! I remember how often this paranormal series was recommended to be a couple of years ago (a few comparing it to BDB!!). Ilsa says: “Maryse, I don’t normally post about books I really dig, but holy hell, I stumbled across a vampire book by a British author Lindsay J. Pryor. It’s layered and deep and riveting and sexy all rolled into one.” (here’s the reading order)
  • Fight for Her #2: MMA New Adult Contemporary Romantic Suspense (Uncaged Love) by JJ Knight <— JUST RELEASED!! (so many good review for installment #1, and this series sounds GREAT!). Here is the series reading order.
  • Primal: an Overwatch story by Sasha White <— JUST RELEASED (and yesssss the cover got me!) LOL! But this sounds pretty good, too! “There’s no way in hell he could walk past a man hassling a woman in an empty parking lot and do nothing. Only when the confrontation is over and the voluptuous blonde turns eyes filled with desire to him, does Adam realize he’s in trouble.“
  • Claimed by You by Melissa Toppen <— JUST RELEASED!! “…when Scarlett agrees to fly across the country to be a bridesmaid in the wedding of her high school best friend, her plan is simple. Get in, get out. Should be easy enough. What Scarlett doesn’t expect is to come face to face with the first man she ever loved. The man who took her innocence and then broke her heart. The man, that to this day, no other man has been able to live up to.“
  • Unlocked by H.C. Brown <— JUST RELEASED!! M/M erotica! “When Delano Briggs, BDSM club owner and volunteer firefighter, is called to aid in the evacuation of a burning New York hotel, he thinks it’s just another job…“
  • Undertow: New Adult Contemporary Romance (Wunderland Book 1) by Jen Greyson <— JUST RELEASED! “Six single girls. One sexy billionaire bachelor. On water. What could possibly go wrong?” (reality show romance!)
  • Falling Star (A Jersey Girl Novel) by Laura DeLuca <— JUST RELEASED FAMOUS ACTOR ALERT! “…she meets a West Coast hunk who has no trouble winning her heart. But Lainey only knows him as Drew, not the Oscar-nominated actor who’s constantly scandalized in the tabloids.“
  • I Need You: HarperImpulse New Adult Romance by Jane Lark <— JUST RELEASED (book #3) and it sounds like an angsty love triangle! I tried only skimming the blurb to get an “idea”. 😉
  • I Found You: HarperImpulse New Adult Romance by Jane Lark <— here’s book #1… “She’s running from life, he’s running toward it. But compassion urges him to help her. His offer of a place to stay leads to friendship and trouble. There’s his fiancée back home in Oregon and a family who just don’t trust this girl from the wrong side of the tracks.“
  • Beholden (The Belonging Duet #2) by Corinne Michaels <— JUST RELEASED and Kandace is very excited about this one! She says: “OMGGGGG! I just saw “Beholden” by Corrine Micheals went live today. If you read the first book Beloved you will understand my excitement because the author was not nice and left us with a WTF ending. I truly loved Jackson and Catherine. I can’t wait to start this one. I believe this is the last one in the series.” and Christy says: “Beholden blew me away!!! Amazing read!”
  • Beloved (The Belonging Duet #1) by Corinne Michaels <— and here is book #1!!!! “His training as a Navy SEAL never prepared him for the battle to win her heart. He’s different, honorable, and worth the chance…but he must prove it.”
  • Three Rivers (A Gateway to Love Novel Book 1) by Chloe Barlow <— ON SALE! Mourning the loss of her husband and she eventually meets someone. “…she agrees to a no-strings affair with him for the two weeks he’s in town, he swears he’ll walk away when their time is up. Assured she can test the waters of a new life while keeping her vow never to betray her husband’s memory by opening her heart to another, Althea throws herself into the escape Griffen provides her.”
  • Heavy: A Contemporary Romance by J. C. Mells <— On sale!! Tattoo artist meets socialite… “…she’s everything Thatch is NOT looking for in a potential soul mate. If he were looking for one at all, that is. California has a secret she’s ashamed of. She perpetuates the media image of party-girl-gone-wild, only because it covers the real and ugly truth.“
  • Surviving Us by Erin Noelle <— RECENT RELEASE that I missed just a few days ago. Toski says: “Loved this story. Two survivors. A beautiful NA story about healing and learning to love again” Sounds good! “When Bristol Criswell travels to St. Lucia for an Enduring Life retreat, she hopes to discover encouragement and support from like souls. A vacation fling is the furthest thing from her mind, especially not with a cocky-mouthed, arrogant jerk like Davis McKay…“
  • Away (The Keaton Series Book 1) by B.A. Wolfe <— Trisha highly recommends it! “I just finished the sequel to this amazing debut novel. Away is on sale now and Stay was released on Monday, so no need to wait. This is an emotional journey I will never forget, Stay will be with me for a long time. If you are in the mood for a “book that will make you cry”, please ONE-CLICK, and take a chance on this one. I recommend the Keaton Series with tears in my eyes, and a smile in my heart. Loved it! A 5 star debut series for me!“
  • Stay (The Keaton Series Book 2) by B.A. Wolfe <— and here’s book #2 that was just released!
  • Dead Serious (Hard Rock Roots Book 6) by C.M. Stunich <— Another recent release that I missed, and I know many were following this series!
  • Missionary Position (Modern Love Stories Book 3) by Daisy Prescott <— On sale and Kandace recommends it! “A while ago I read ‘Missionary Position’ by Daisy Prescott and really liked it. It’s currently on sale until October 27. This book is really different from the usual. I love it! I found myself reading the entire book with a big smile on my lips. I would highly recommend this story if you need a change up from the dark edge angst books. Daisy’s writing is really witty and the banter between her characters is fantastic. Missionary Position as an “Eat, Pray, Love” with a mix a little “Frenched” by Melanie Harlow vibe to it. I’ve read all this author’s book and PM is hands down my favorite. The pace is a little faster than her previous books.“
  • Insidious (Tales From the Dark Side) by Aleatha Romig <— This DARK READ is back on the this list, ’cause our fellow readers are loving it! Clarissa says: “Maryse you have to read Aleatha Romig’s new book Insidious. It is mind blowing. This book is so full of twists and turns that you are on the edge of your seat the whole time. You’ll love it!” and Joy is freaking out! “I just finished Insidious… Have you had a chance to read it yet??? I need therapy!!! I need to talk to someone about this!!! HELP!!!” AND!! Ela just made a support group in the spoiler forum to chat. She says: Anyone reading or read Insidious by Aleatha Romig please join spoiler thread! https://talk.maryse.net/threads/insidious-by-aleatha-romig.5978/ … I NEED ANSWERS!!!!!” <— LOL!!!! 😀
  • Bite Me (Bitten Book 1) by C.C. Wood <— sounds like fun (and lots of great reviews)!! Full length book, too! “…I met the beautiful and enigmatic Conner Savage. But there was just one little problem…he said he was a vampire. Figures a man that hot would be batsh!t crazy. Or so I thought. It didn’t take me long to realize that Conner wasn’t a nut job and that I was addicted to him. With every moment we spent together he drew me deeper into his world and the supernatural culture in which he lived. Now I had a choice: the vampire I craved or a normal life. Couldn’t be easier, right?“
  • His (A Dark Erotic Romance Novel) by Aubrey Dark <— Dark read that gave me a blurb jolt (released a few days ago), He’s a serial killer! Eeeeeep!! “When I followed him home, I was just playing Nancy Drew. Trying to find out his secret. His kiss was intoxicating, and I thought he was harmless. I was wrong.”
  • Riot (Predators MC Book 1) by Jamie Begley <— Another recent release that I missed a few days ago… OOOOOH!!!! This sounds good!! “As a teacher, I’m supposed to want to educate those who want to learn, right? That’s what I believed until I was told I’d have to teach a class at the prison. I didn’t move to a town labeled as one of the safest places in America only to be faced with a bunch of Predators. He expects me to trust him despite being the reason I’m trapped in the middle of a prison riot. His club means more to him than I ever will, and if I give him a chance, he will break the fragile peace I have managed to find. It’s not the first time I’ve had to escape a predator.“

Maryse just finished ‘Sociopath’ and ‘Insidious’… wow what a crazy ride that was, my head is still spinning and I definitely need something light and fluffy romance to read after my dark fix. I enjoyed both books for different reasons.
Can anyone tell me anything about ‘Vain Series’ as it’s on sale and I don’t know anything about it.

O…M…G I just put like 90% of this list on my wish list and tbr.

Amy and others, if we’re doing a group read of After this weekend, you better speak up quick ’cause my reading plans are about to get majorly derailed with Maryse’s new list.

Shell, I have all the Vain books. I’ve only read the first one so far but can tell you you I loved it. 4 to 4.5 stars for me. I loved, loved, loved it. A strong heroine, a scary situation, a sexy and gorgeous hero. But is he a hero? A twisty turny crazy ride I recommend.

Ok. I tried (for like 5 minutes) but I just can’t.

How am I supposed to resist “special ops, genetic experiments, super soldiers and sex-addicted doms”?

Fortunately, Unlocked looks like a short one, so even if we read After, I’ll be able to fit it in to my weekend reading.

Maryse, I have read and reread Three Rivers by Chloe Barlow. I absolutely loved Althea and Griffen’s story. Filled with tragedy, regret, healing, love and forgiveness makes this book memorable. Thanks for listing it on your site. Hopefully, once you get settled from your move, you and many others will read Three Rivers, a great, well written book.

So many great books on the list today. Going one-click crazy 🙂 There is one I’d like to mention that’s on sale for this weekend for $.99 that wasn’t on the list. It’s Believing Lies by Rachel Everleigh. https://www.amazon.com/dp/B00NNDXT4K

Hopping on the After bandwagon tonight. *note to self: stop for a bottle of wine on the way home* If After turns out to be scary gritty and gut wrenching, I want to make sure I have reinforcements at home. Here’s hoping for a good weekend read. *Cheers*

Yep I’m ready to start After this evening too – yey for the support group!

Jean, I looovvveeeddd Take Care Sara – seriously I’ve been hoarding my five star ratings lately but this book gets one. I immediately bought the followup novella and devoured that as well. I just really connected with the characters and story – was a sobbing mess for parts of it too.

Hey Laura how are you liking that Angels series? I found it different but not bad.

We’re starting After by Krylov tonight. I hope that trying it again in group read mode will make me stick with it this time. I squirreled away from it last time but I’d just come off a couple of spectacular reads so I was in a different mood.

A paranormal being compared to BDB? might be worth a peek…..

Riot sounds interesting. That other book with the “teacher” that went to prison wasn’t bad…. what was that again? hmmm…..

Here With Me….. yikes!!!! the brother???? oh no no no…… I like the forbiddeny thing.

So many good choices. Need to hurry and finish King #3 (AWESOME, BTW)…. can’t join on After (because it’s not on amazon)…. so at least I have some good choices.

Who is this Amy you speak of? She sounds like a perverted lush. *snicker*

I had a date night with my hubby last night that didn’t end at the restaurant *hee hee* and some black widow shots…need I say more? 😉 I’m only about 10% into After but liking it so far. Nothing *too* bad yet (just stuff making me cringe a bit) but I have a feeling it’s not going to stay that way. How bad is it that I’m *hoping* it doesn’t stay that way? 😛

I am helping a friend out with bowling birthday party for a bunch of third grade girls then I’ll be jumping back into After. How do I let myself get roped into these things? They are adorable, but good lord!! You would think they are all having PMS symptoms already!

I’m on chapter twelve. The writing is smooth as molasses. This author is extremely talented. However I still don’t have the feelings for this story as I did for her other two books. After is an earlier work of hers. So, I don’t know. It’s dark. No doubt about that, but I’m just not as tied up in knots as I was by her other two books I read. Or maybe it’s a “not yet” thing. I’m going to keep reading and likely finish it this time. It’s smooth and the story flows. Maybe I’m just feeling too impatient to get to some of these on this list.

Aleatha Romig’s Insidious was HFS good. I could NOT put it down. I’m a big fan of dark psychological romance…and this did not disappoint. From the first words you are drawn into this world where you wonder exactly what you would do if in the same position.

Twisty, turny, up, down, sideways and diagonal….this is one of those books where you sat with your hand over your mouth part of the time thinking, “holy sh*t, I really didn’t just read that, did I?”

And the very last paragraph of the book… mad props to Ms Romig, she’s a phenomenal talent!

Impatient with Dex and Perry and want them to finally admit their attraction to each other- enough already!!! 🙂

Ugh, I just feel so…sad for John and Eva. And so angry for them. And I wanna go on a castrating rampage. With a rusty pocketknife. Then maybe I’ll do the right thing and disinfect what’s left of their junk…with a bottle of cheap vodka. No way am I wasting the good stuff on them. Remember in World War Z where they are in the plane and he gives that woman a mini bottle of liquor – I think it’s vodka? – and tells her she’s earned it or deserves it (can’t remember exactly what he says), then pours another bottle of liquor over her wound? Yeah, I’m not that nice. They don’t get to drink any of it.

Oh! Have you ladies seen Hard Candy?? *That* scene. But without the ice pack.

Thanks Amy, for making this a group read. I knew Und get back to it eventually. But this gave me a reason to do it now. And, honestly, I probably would have squirreled away this time too if we weren’t reading it together.

To describe the difference in the books, I have to say, this one keeps slapping me with situations and revelations, the more I read the less I can put it down. The other books were more like punches to the gut throughout. I don’t think I breathed with those. But again, I feel biased and am afraid I don’t give enough credit to After which is really a good book. I really don’t think this woman can write anything bad. Her skill is off the charts. I’ve read she lives in Spain. Wish I lived there. I’d be happy almost anywhere in Europe with all of its history and antiquities.

But for now, just a big sigh to have gotten through After. It was more violent than I'll usually read. But it was an integral part of the story. Everything Krylov puts in her books adds to the plot. Fabi, I have not ventured into the M/M genre and i think i remember you saying if I give it a shot, I shouldn’t start with a krylov book. Is that right? Because I really want to read more of her books. Many have told me to start with Try. What’s your suggestion?

Reply
Fabi
Fabi

Jean, After had quite a bit of M/M. The one I mentioned above, Abduction is not m/m either but will likely have some elements like After did. I think most, maybe all of Krylov’s writing is dark.

If you want dark m/m try Bad Things. If you want a semi-darkish m/m love story then read Dangerously Happy.

Straight up romance love story would be Try and the follow up Take.

That’s the extent of my m/m reading unless you count bdb Lover at Last.

Maybe someone who’s read a bit more of it than I have can add some suggestions.

I think this next one I’m going to read is m/m but not sure. I’d have to read the blurb again.

Me too – wanna read more Krylov. But tbr is so long. I just need an excuse to pick one read over another. 🙂

I know what you mean. I had a hard time with the level of violence in After. Try will take you a little more close and personal with the m/m. It’s a beautiful love story. I lived it. A 5* for me. But I’m one of those that gets sappy with love stories. For some reason color, race, gender, even age, all get blurred for me when I’m reading about two people falling in love.

MichelleS glad you liked Painted Faces 🙂 I adored it too! There’s a followup Killer Queen out right now that I picked up but haven’t read yet. I also have Six of Hearts to read by her but I heard that it doesn’t come close to how great Painted Faces was.

Bev, if you want a romance with a Walking Dead feel, I thought After fits. I also read Reawakening by Charlotte Stein which is literally romance during a zombie apocalypse – it was fun but more of a fluffy erotica book. After is much deeper and there is a point behind the sexual encounters good and bad. I actually am blown away at how Krylov masters using sex within the story seamlessly – kinda like the norm is having a story with sex but she makes the sex tell a story if that makes sense.

Michelle do you also read YA dystopian or only adult ones? I’ve read so many excellent ones in YA.

Yeah Bad Things scares me a little but I will get there for sure – will probably go with Try after Abducted.

I read anything dystopian and I love recs so lay ’em on me! So far The Unfortunates is just ok for me but it’s hard to read it following After and not think it’s just ok ya know.

Bev, the graphic novels are even darker. I like how the tv show plays out better so far.

And no Daryl. Really like the set up for a dark urban fantasy type series, but with a little bit more romance.
I do like the other types of relationships that WD takes the time to develop.and wish that sometimes our books would do the same. Like the brother relationship between Rick and Daryl or the friendship between Michonne and Carl.

Pre ordered Last Light so that it will be ready to go tomorrow.

Just finished After. I will never forget this story. My heart is so heavy with emotion. Don’t want to spoil this story for anyone else who might want to be brave enough to experience it. Now I’m going to curl up and cry some more. Feeling proud to have powered through some of the most difficult scenes I’ve ever read. So worth every ache and tear both happy and sad. Great author.

Hi Maryse, so pleased you’ve recommended Blood Deep, I’ve got all of the Blackthorn books so far and love every single one of them. Lindsay Pryor’s writing effortlessly transports you into a whole new world. I downloaded Blood Deep on release day and will be diving in shortly. Totally awesome series!!!

Sounds like Friends with Partial Benefits by Luke Young. I tried to make a comment on the site but it did not seem to show up??

Sounds like it could be Always Meant to Be by Siobhan Davis

I am still here. 🙂 Just moving into my new house (that I love but there's stuff EVERYWHERE right now) so I'm a bit scattered (at least for this week).

Whew! Glad you checked in. I don’t know what I would read if you decided to stop posting your blog.

Girl…the panic when I found last week’s post at the top yesterday…and the detailed explanation my husband had to sit through of our long-blog relationship and your posting schedule. 😂😂😂 So glad you are good — hope everything is going smoothly with the move (as much as such a thing is possible anyway!)

Congratulations on the new house and your puppy!!! Eeek ❤️

Ahh wow!! Have a good clear out! Congratulations on your new home and all the health and happiness to enjoy it! 🏡

Missing your posts and wondered if all was well!

Take your time! We will be double excited for your next post! Can’t wait to hear more about the move and the new puppy. ❤️

Congrats on the new place!!!!

Glad to hear you're ok..was a tad worried ❤️

I’m happy for you.
