Book Review – Night Owl by M. Pierce

By 104 Comments

Night Owl (The Night Owl Trilogy)
I loved it! Fun fun fun, suuuuuper-steamy (like eye-popping at times… he’s got a dirty dirty mouth!) but SO much more than that. Definitely erotica but with an intense story in the mix, and a twist or two (right off the bat) that grabbed me. And then bring on the angst! Yet, I dunno how to describe this one, without giving too much away. It’s like everything we love to read, but with it’s own “feel” you know?

I posted it on a recent bargain post this month when Justine recommended it saying:

“Just read this book in one sitting. If you liked 50 Shades then you will probably really like it”

Well of course I love “Fifty” and “Bared” (but I’ve been slowing down lately on my “billionaires”). So many book-billionaires out there to choose from. 😉 Still though, I know there are tons of us still looking for more (nothing better than being in the mood for a genre and having plenty to play with), so I posted it.

But then I received this comment by Laura:

“Maryse – I loved the Night Owl! It wouldn’t liken it to 50 Shades though – its totally different and gave me that “feeling”. – so so so good!”

So… like Fifty, but… not? Okay! My attention is piqued. And then the latest reader-recommendations came in, and I knew I was SO in!

Kristina: I just read book 1 in the Night Owl Trilogy you mentioned. OMG, so good!!! Seriously, this book was fantastic. … Super steamy & has a great pace!

Amy: You HAVE to read Night Owl by M. Pierce. OMG Stay up all night squeee! So good! I think it is going to be the next big thing this year!

Anna: This year… Hmm… Had to be Night Owl by M. Pierce. I can’t help it. I loved it so, so much. (side note from Maryse <—- when I asked for your fav book of year.)

I get it!!! I so get the “like Fifty but NOT”, comparison. AND OMG it was great!! This one had what I wanted in a “genre change”.

So what’s it about? I’m gonna short form it, ’cause I loved the mini-surprises and all of the rest of the discoveries as they came.

This was the old cover (when it was still indie)

Matt and Hannah are writing a book together… online. They’ve never met, and as far as Matt goes, they never will. In fact, his rules are NO private info is to be exchanged. No names (other than screen names: “Night Owl” and Little Bird”). No pictures. No nothing! He’s in a relationship after all. And he’s not “interested” in the outside world. He just wants to write, and he trolled the net for an online writing “partner” and she’s… pretty good!

But one day, she sent him a chapter. From her real gmail account. With her real gmail picture showing her in all of her glory.

She was beautiful. And I was furious with her, for foisting her picture and last name on me.

Matt was FURIOUS!!!! Imposed upon!!!!! And… titillated.

My whole body was tingling.

I needed to tell Hannah to stop and that I wasn’t single and that we were going to ruin our pleasant anonymous online friendship.

I’m leaving it there. 😉

Let’s talk about the *ahem* “hero”. He stole the show (even though I LOVED being her, and I loved her!). But him. He’s almost like nobody I’ve ever read before. But I feel like I know him. He’s SO real. So obnoxious. Demanding.

Matt’s smirks came in flavors – two parts kindness, one part wicked amusement, a little lust in the mix. Oh, and one hundred percent smug bastard.

And yet, so endearing.

Matt stopped at a florist and bought two lily bouquets. He shoved one at me.

“Flowers,” he muttered.

“I see that.” I gave him a peck on the cheek. “You’re so adorable. So sweet and strange…”

*giggle* Awwww there are so many “endearing” Matt scenes. You just wait.

And the flaws… OMG the issues he has (but not the usual romantic “mistake/guilty conscience” thing). This guy’s issues are… I dunno. Definitely an innate part of him. And bad. And dirty (in good ways *waggles eyebrows* … and in bad ways). His quirks and his personality are all HIM.

But there was something about him. It’s like… he was alpha, he was brooding, he was bossy, impatient. self-centered and selfish.

F#@k, I needed to stop worrying about this sh!t – at least for now. F#@k now, worry later.

Mmhm. confused

He was anti-social, and of course, he was hot! He was rich. He was commanding. He had sway *swoon*. But he was also so… intimately private, primal, and SO vulnerable.

“Beautiful man. I wish you could see yourself. You look lost.”

“I feel lost,” I whispered.

*sigh* and *heart*

Okay okay… LOL!!! Wait! I know… this sounds like EVERY one of our heroes in part or in full. I’m making him sound like the rich billionaire heroes we love, and while on “paper” he seems/sounds like them, when you read him, experience him, you’ll see what I mean when I say he’s SO different.

This is not another “Fifty” (even as much as I LOVE Christian). This guy? Less perfect “god-like” (with imperfect issues) and more imperfect “human-like” (with beautiful traits). There was just *something* about this guy, his FEEL, that I can barely compare him to anyone. He was so realistic, so… bratty. So weird. Not so secure, even in his pomp.

AH! Almost… if I HAD to compare him to another book-hero, I’d say “Dex“. A weird twist of Dex, Fifty and “hermit”. Obnoxious, and dirty-mouthed. Some of the things he’d say (let alone… DO) eek made me red-faced. FOR HIM!!! When he was in the moment… look out, he was letting it all hang out. And yet I loved him (and cringed at him) at the same time.

God, I felt amazing. I felt tattered in the best possible way, like our violent passion had blasted me clean.

And here’s the thing. Matt is a BAD boy (and not “bad boy” as in tattooed, bad-ass and a player. No… that’s not him). I mean bad as in… grrrrrrrrr!!!!!! Some of you might have a hard time with some of his… mistakes. But this is where the book really takes form. Comes to life. He is human, and he makes some serious mistakes. But that doesn’t mean they don’t come back to bite him in the a$$.

Let the fun (or torment) begin!!!

So all that to say, FANTASTIC writing (at times it got so deep!), fantastic pacing, fantastic characters. They are true to life (and nothing is that far-fetched in it’s angst). I believed it all. And I fell for them. I FEEL for them.

Oh I hear you now. “But but but! It says “trilogy”. Is this a complete book?” Yes! But then there was an epilogue that opened up a whole new, er…. story. Book, that made me go “what what whaaaaaaat?” Eeeeep! And I can’t wait for it! Bring it! I can’t wait to see where this author takes us next.

4.5 stars!!!

Here’s a last minute quote from the book that I loved. It’s NOT at the end (so don’t think that this is the epilogue).

“I’m trying to teach you this mysterious skill, one that you seem to lack. It’s called how to say goodbye.”

I smiled and rubbed the back of my neck.

“What are you grinning at?” she said.

“I never want to,” I said.

“What? Never want to what?”

“I never want to learn how to say goodbye.”

P.S. Thank you to the author for sending it my way. After these recommendations I was already SO on it, but since you sent it over, I can’t thank you enough!!!

P.P.S. OMG MATT and his sweeeeeeetness towards animals. Even the stuffed toy kind. *sigh* I LOVE HIM!!!!! I just wanna snuggle him and his bunny and his manatee. *giggle*

P.P.P.S. Okay yes, at first I thought it was a tad bumpy and speeding along with them, er… intimately (attraction-wise) but I get it, now. And it ended up working out perfectly, for me, in terms of my reading enjoyment.

  • Feel Like Makin’ Love (Rock and Roll Trilogy #3) by Barbara Stewart <— another new release!!! (here is the series reading order).
  • Willing Captive by Belle Aurore <— here’rs another very recent release brought back to our attention by Kandace. And despite the title and cover… this is NOT a dark read. 😉 “Two great big thumbs up for ‘Willing Captive’ by Bella Aurora. Bella Aurora is quickly becoming one of my favorite authors. Her books have the hot alpha bossy guys we love mixed with witty humor. Lily has been sheltered her entire life by her overprotective father. Someone had threatened Lily and her family. Nox is hired to kidnap her. A large portion of the story takes place in a safe house. It was hilarious and sweet to watch Lily experience life for the first time. BTW this isn’t a dark book.“

  • The Last Girl by Kitty Thomas <— mega-dark-read lovers, look what Nancy found us! ” The Last Girl by Kitty Thomas is now 99 cents (was $4.95) A Dark Read!” <— Always beautiful covers, but beware you guys!! Kitty Thomas is queen of dark. Inside is so different from the more “serene” outside. These are not for everyone and not for the faint of heart, but I can’t help but read her. My DARK guilty pleasures. “Six years ago strangers broke into Juliette’s house; she was home alone. She kept her eyes closed, praying that if she didn’t see anything, she wouldn’t be killed. No one harmed her. In fact, one of the thieves protected her. Now Juliette’s dreams are haunted by him.” From reading even more of the synopsis after that part, I *think* this might have a paranormal element to it…
  • Magic After Dark Boxed Set (Six Book Bundle) by Deanna Chase, Dannika Dark, Marie Hall, SM Reine, Kate Danley, Danielle Monsch <— paranormal books all bundled!!
  • Dark and Dangerous: Six-in-One Hot Paranormal Romances by Jennifer Ashley, Bonnie Vanak, Caris Roane, Laurie London, Erin Kellison, Felicity Heaton <— and here’s another bundle of paranormals!
  • Blind Obsession by Ella Frank (my review)

Jade C Jamison – Bullet Series Reading Order

By 1 Comment

Rock star series and book #3 has just been released, so I decided to put up this reading order. And the recommendations look promising for this one, too. I haven’t read these yet, but just look at these reactions!

Joanna: I decided to read the excerpt of Bullet last night to decide if I want to buy it … Holy sh!t. I sat and read the whole book in one sitting, it was FANTASTIC. Now, it’s a book that will piss you off because the girl does something really stupid, over and over and over again… But it’s so good AND she’s really damned young when she does it AND what a wild ride AND totally worth it in the end. I’m so glad I got it and it made me realize – once again – that those incredible books that knock you on your ass are worth searching for!!!!

Krystal: I have just read Bullet by Jade C. Jamison… wow! Long story because it covers a lot of time (years) and a lot of stuff happens but very detailed and I certainly felt all the emotions. This book was a mix of the Thoughtless series, Beautiful Disaster and even a little bit of the Sinners On Tour series. Definitely recommend 🙂 Described as an EPIC Rock Star Novel and I have to say I kind of agree.

Lisa: I just finished Bullet and loved it! Great suggestion!!

Amy: …just finished Bullet by Jade C. Jamison (was on your bargain list last week or so ago).  WOW.  This one is great for you rocker lovers.  Angsty, lusty, sweet, rough…everything in one.  Not one, but many rock gods in this book.

Jennifer: I am about 80% through…you want drama…this book is drama…I can’t put it down.

Nancy: …started last night & it is so good. I don’t give up sleep for many books, but could not put it down.

Dee:  I read “Bullet” today & now into “Rock Bottom” both leaving me with “Arsen” rip my emotions to shreds turmoil.

About book #1:

What if you discover the man you want is toxic?

She tasted a little bit of heaven with him, and now they’ve gone through hell and back, but can their relationship take anymore?

Valerie Quinn is a naïve college freshman when she meets on-the-rise rock star Ethan Richards. He’s an idealistic, handsome, reckless young man, but he’s captured her heart. She doesn’t give up on him and eventually his walls crumble down. By the time Valerie has given herself to him completely, she discovers he’s damaged and may be beyond help. Can she save Ethan and their relationship before he implodes, or will he self-destruct and take her with him?

Barbara Stewart – The Rock and Roll Trilogy Reading Order

By 5 Comments

Another rock star series alert, and I know right off the bat I’ve been missing out ’cause the first in this series is one of the most often recommended books, to come my way. I hear it is heart-wrenching and an extreme tear-jerker. I’m nervous (and titillated!!)

The heartfelt discussions and emotions this book started amongst our crew… wow. What he heck am I doing sitting here typing?? Obviously I need to be reading —> THIS!!! (side note: actually I know why I haven’t started. I’m scared… but I MUST!!! Especially now that the third book has been released. I can do this. I know I can!)

Just look at these recommendations:

Amy: I truly think it is the most emotional and beautiful book I have ever read.  I have been a basket case for days now and cannot get this book out of my head and heart.  It is a love story, but the way it is written you connect to the story as if it is an autobiography about someone you know and love.  It is a story that will stay will you forever and I HIGHLY recommend that you check it out and give it a shot.

Kari: Hi Maryse! Have you read Rock and Roll Never Forgets? It’s amazing. So moving! Couldn’t put it down.

Renee: I don’t remember how I stumbled on this one but it was such a gut wrenching and beautiful romance!

Jenn: I purchased Rock and Roll Never Forgets based on your March 1st E-Bargain Blog Post. I do not know if you have read it yet so I will not give anything away; but I must tell you it was so emotional to the point I am literally exhausted and my heart hurts. Not your typical rock star book but I LOVED IT I cried from ***% to the end…No ugly cry- They were tears that just slid down my cheeks not making a sound-so beautifully written.

Angela: Just finished Rock and Roll Never Forgets. It is a heartbreaking, bitter-sweet love story. I have not cried this much reading a book since ***. Here’s the thing, I like angst, no, I love it but books like this affect me so much. It will stay with me for a long time.

Jennifer: Just got done reading Rock & Roll Never Forgets……all I can say is wow!!!! You need to get this book & a box of Kleenex soon!!!! Maryse this book is so up your alley…Rockstar book & ALOT of emotions. I don’t think I have felt that emotional with a book. (If I have it’s been awhile)

Michelle: Rock and Roll Never Forgets…..love love this trilogy, at least the two I’ve read….waiting for the last book

Amy: You must read Rock and Roll Never Forgets ASAP!!!  The third book in the series Feel Like Makin Love was just released and I just KNOW you would love it.  This is truly a fantastic series.  I strongly recommend reading it.  You wont regret it. 😉

And I could go on and on posting recommendations (they just get more and more intense).

About book #1:

Beth Morgan is a young woman who’s just been given the ‘once in a lifetime’ opportunity to meet her favorite band, Traveler. That meeting leads to a chance encounter with her idol, the band’s lead singer, Andy Stevens.

What follows is a love story. A journey through the peaks, valleys and trials of a relationship lived in the public eye; the miles they traveled together through his career in the music business, and her struggles to stay obscure in a world she never really settled into comfortably. In the end it’s all about love, fate, and what the heart can’t hold back.
