Friday Finds! 25 of the Latest Bargain e-Books & Reader Recommendations – August 28th 2015

The other one really calling to me is The Kingkiller Chronicle book 1. Anyone read this series? It’s only 1.99 for the first book. I guess I’m in a fantasy mood.

MichelleS, no but have wanted to read it. Checked it out a while ago but had to return it before I read it.

Guys don’t throw peanuts at me but I just finished FCH and didn’t like it. I was having a good time up until 40%. What they did to Sam’s mom was not ok and she just stood there. Also I don’t get people’s obsession with the Kade brothers. Is it because they have money, play football, are good looking? The fascination was a little too much not just from the HC kids but from the town and I really don’t get it. I just didn’t click with the story and characters. I did like Logan at first but thats it. *hides*

Anne, that’s happened to me too. I’ll read a book that everyone adores and be left wondering what’s wrong with me because I didn’t really connect with it. It probably happens to all of us.

I’d explain some of the points you made but I feel like we’re starting to get too detailed about the story and its becoming spoilerish.

Let’s just say that there is no such thing as “one size fits all”. 🙂

I’m with Bev. We do need rain. I see rain clouds today, but that’s just making things humid. No rain.

It is fun to needle each other, since everyone just adores each other here. Also, it’s nice to know that, even when we don’t like something, it’s okay. 🙂 It’s also fun to recommend books and get recommendations. Even if some of us are stubborn about reading that book. Yes, I mean me too! 😛

Paula, I really did love LoTS. I’m still thinking about it and feeling all lovey-dovey towards it, and it’s making it a little difficult to move on to the next book! *sigh* I just loved all the feels, and I was so surprised at the lack of wanting to shake the h when in a more contemporary book I would have felt that way. That ending…bittersweet but perfect.

Oh, there was a podcast with Sonali Dev, the author and she just read Deeper and loved it and West. It is cute she said that the book, “just made me want to get up and dance.” Lol. Love that.

Okay, silly aside, I got Eight Grave after Dark by Darynda Jones from the library, so I’m going to be in a happy story for a while. Well, I’ll be happy reading. You know how it is. She starts off with a crying dead person, but that’s normal.

I haven’t read Sweet Dreams yet. The KA one, right?

lol I totally get that. That’s why my TBR has been neglected. PNR and Fantasy only right now, and even then, I prefer the fantasy stuff currently. It’s a mood, I guess.

I love the little quotes with each chapter in these books. They are cheesy but funny. “Irony; the opposite of Wrinkly.” Oh, and yes, I wish this was a Thursday read based on the first sentence. ‘There was a dead tax attorney in my closet, sobbing uncontrollably into the hem of her blouse.’ On Thursday, watch. My sentence will be boring, but now? Saturday? Awesome sentence. lol

I have an idea…those of us who haven’t read Sweet Dreams will start it when Maryse starts FCH. What say?? Maybe we’ll get another standoff going. *snicker*

No we haven’t watched that show. I tend to watch very little TV. It either has to be sci fi or involve music somehow. I can’t deal with “chick flicks” even though I read so much romance, and the only thing I hate more than that on TV is comedy. I’m into the dry witt kind of humor, not the silly slapstick type. Soooo, there you have it. Fabi in a nutshell. hahahaha

Fabi, i love that show so. Great mother daughter duo. But i get you if not your thing. Though maybe one day we can swap eps, might be fun. And unlike a book only 45 min. Just realized, no Friends, Cheers, Arrested Development, Seinfeld? So interesting. Mash?? Obviously i watch too much tv.

Maryse totally spoiled on how that show ends. So much about its season ending. But have only heard good things about it.

Okay, this show will definitely NOT be for everyone (especially those who don’t like cheating books/shows) but a good show is The Affair on Showtime. Season 2 starts up soon, and season 1 blew my freaking mind. Holy moly…talk about slow burn and angst, and in a show no less!!!

What makes it different is that each episode gives the same scenes from his POV and from her POV, along with scenes from each of their own respective personal lives, and sometimes the scenes between them are similarly recounted while other times they are so completely different in how each of them perceived those events. The most mind messing part is that it is never clarified which POV is the “correct” one. It also does NOT shy away from showing the devastation and fallout from their selfish decisions. Then there is the added element of the “now” (the affair is in the past) and a crime that is being investigated related to all of them.

It is soooooo addictive, ladies! Like I said, slow burn and them BAM! And freaking hot, too. 😉

Amy, have you seen Gilmore Girls? They make some choices i hated yet love them and the show.
Besides my thriller I’m going to try the first couple eps of the Knick.

Okay, Tom Hardy is 37 so he would need to be like 15 years younger to be Travis. But at least I don’t feel like a cougar now that I know how old he is. *snicker*

It really is crazy good Fabi. I could actually binge watch that whole first season all over again. Yeah, it’s that good.

Bev…you know, I have *never* watched that show even though I have heard of it for years. How many seasons are there?

Amy, the way he played that character. I know he was so messed up & really shouldn’t but you just want to take him home and care for him, lol.
There are seven seasons. A lot, i know. And the last one, to most of us fans as far as I can tell, was not all we could hope for. It lacked Amy Sherman Palladino’s touch. But if you like strong, very intelligent, witty women this has them. Great family dynamics for good and not so good. Great setting, seriously want to live there. Vibrant secondary characters. Slow burn romances. Angst. And hurt. And some wonderful dialogue. Love the dialogue.
I gush when I talk of it.

I don’t watch much TV either. I still have to catch up on Once Upon a Time. The Cruella episode bored me so much I never finished it. :/ I have to, though, because the next season sounds insanely good.

I’m going to be honest. If Maryse is looking for thrills, I don’t really want her to try to read something that isn’t thrilling, even if it’s FCH. You have to cater to your wants, or you are just not going to get as much enjoyment as possible from the book. NOW! When she’s wanting angst… FCH!

Ok, I keep jumping from book to book. Just a chapter and then move on and read a chapter or so of new one. For no reason, they are good books. I have 3 that I’m going to choose one from and that one(!) Is to be my read until done.
They are out side my usual genre, palate cleanse.
Anyone want to help me decide? I’ll list them.

Bird Box by Josh Malerman. Horror—definitely outside my norm.
An Untamed Heart by Roxane Gay. One of those that got all the buzz. Thriller type, I believe.
Code Name Verity by Elizabeth Wein. YA WWII. Supposedly rips your heart out (gulp) but lots love it.

Bev, Code Name Verity is the one that grabs my attention. Have you started it yet?

Nope. It’s been sitting in my library stack. Supposedly good with a great heroine. And what I mentioned above all I know. Tried to stay away from spoilers.

That does look good Fabi. Luckily it is usually a book fog from a good read that disturbs my next, but yes the bad ones too.

And for all the Sweet Dreams hold out…. it was my very first KA book. I loved it so much that I went on to read a dozen or more of hers back-to-back after that. Then I read ALL her stuff. Maybe because it was the first KA. I don’t know, but it really stuck with me. I love Tate and Bubbah’s. I’ve reread it 3x. It’s a 5 star read for me.

It took all I had to rent Magic Mike. And then didn’t even really like it. The dancing was cool but when they started stripping…*shakes head* lose all appeal.

Bev – you’ve heard mixed reviews? oh boo! That was supposed to be my sure-fire read this week. I LOVED the Burg series. But that was also when every book by KA gave me “the feels”. I pre-ordered it, so there is no reason to hold off. It’s sitting there. Waiting.

I just saw your comment…you want to know the story? Okay then…and I swear on my polish collection and makeup this all really happened…

I started seeing these glowing, shapeless blobs moving around every now and then, sometimes flipping end over end like a Slinky, other times just kind of hovering and then moving upward, and they were always in our bedroom against the wall or in a corner. Creepy as sh!t and would make me hide under my blanket, but I just tried to ignore them for the most part.

After that had been going on for a couple of months, I was outside talking with my neighbor one night when the light flipped on in the bathroom at the exact second that the porch light flipped on. The light switches were no where near each other, and no one was inside as my hubby was working a swing shift. When I went inside, both switches were indeed in the “on” position.

THEN, not long after that I was in the bathroom in the middle of the night with the light off so I wouldn’t wake up my hubby, and I felt this burst of air against my ear as if someone had just puffed a breath on me. What did I do? Screamed and tried to jump off the toilet but ended up doing a face plant ’cause my pajama pants were down around my knees.

The final straw was when I was heading into the bathroom in the middle of the night (again) with the light off (again) and something seemed to hit the blinds over the window, like if you were to throw a ball at it from the INSIDE. Seriously, the blinds moved and it made a lound bang against the glass. TMI but I p!ssed my pajama pants and ran back to our room to jump under the covers with my sleeping hubby, wet pants and all. Welcome to married life, babe. We moved right after that.

Good lord, I have goosebumps right now just remembering all of that! *shudder*

Amy I swear the last house we lived in was haunted. The microwave would turn itself on at random times…like the middle of the night! It would totally freak me out when I was home alone. And lights in the main bedroom would flicker and dim at times. My husband would hear loud footsteps along the timber hallway, thinking it was me, only to have no one there when he’d look. We found out the previous owners wife had died there. Too spooky.

Er, I guess I could also just Google the EIT sites because, ya know, that would be a bit easier. 😛
