24 Friday Finds & Reader Recommendations – April 21st 2017

Happy Friday everyone! We found some book-goodies, but first, I wanna tell about a good one (at least… so far).  I’m halfway through a K. Larsen thriller that’s not out YET (“The Tutor”), but I’m certainly in!! Dark psych-thriller and she’s been held captive (although at first, she doesn’t realize it). Ohhhh it’s going to get sinister. OR!! It’s going to hurt my heart (good ol’ Stockholm Syndrome).

But one thing’s for sure, I have NO clue where it’s going to take me, and I’m hoping this author’s penchant for twisty shocking reveals will reveal another jaw-dropper! I’ll keep you posted (but of course, spoiler-free, that is). 😉

Maryse: I want to announce that I’m reading a K. Larsen book that isn’t out yet called The Tutor and it’s DARK. YAY ME!!!!!! In bed already, reading, with a lemon drop martini. This is the life!

Nay: Oooh, just put The Tutor on my tbr! No release date yet, darn it! But I love the trigger warning: “Trigger warning: all of them. This will not elicit warm fuzzy feelings”

If this tiny teaser doesn’t titillate you, I don’t know what will. 😉 I one-clicked it. That’s EXACTLY what I want to read. P.S. It’s bargain priced (to sweeten the pot). And Jessica is as excited as I am about it!

Jessica: I just one-clicked Alessandra’s TROPHY WIFE. I love the taboo trope, and anything with a so-wrong-it’s-right contract in it is my catnip these days. I already stayed up way too late plowing through half of it last night, and now I’m *almost* looking forward to going to the gym today because I get to keep reading it on the elliptical. Thanks for the great blog post!

  • Red Water by Kristen Mae <— LIVE!!! PSYCH-THRILLER/HORROR ALERT!!!! Ooooh this one just went LIVE and looks interesting (and has some AMAZING sounding reviews)… listed as “thriller/horror” (sounds like a psych-thriller to me!!) She just started college and considers her tiny dorm an upgrade from where she was living… “…when her new love interest begins to reveal his more unsavory appetites, Malory finds herself a hapless participant in sick games that force her to confront her nasty inner demons. As the game intensifies, so do the whispers in Malory’s head…“
  • Partly Pumping by Victoria Devino <— HE TOOK HALF HER HEART & THIS IS HER LOVE STORY… “…yes, you will read about him, and I will talk about him a lot. And you will picture him in your mind. You will try to put together characteristics of him. But, they will never be accurate. Because, I cant even do that. Time makes you forget all of the most important details. I am going to try and remember it all...” and Allie recommends it!
Allie: You should review Partly Pumping, by Victoria Devino! Its on Amazon and I am obsessed. Such steamy scenes, but it is so empowering with a strong female voice. This reminded me of it a little…awesome.

  • Six of Crows by Leigh Bardugo <— FANTASY ROMANCE THRILLER ALERT! One of our favorite authors LOVED this one, and now bev is reading it and seems to be loving it too (mind you, it’s been hit-or-miss amongst our crew for a few that can’t get into it, but maybe it’s a mood thing? I’m dying to know ’cause it looks so good.

Suzanne: Six of Crows is still echoing in my head. Smart. Exciting. Suspenseful. A hint of swoon. Everything that could go wrong, went wrong. You thought you had it figured out and then—WRONG! It gave me a total panic attack. Loved it.

bev: I’m also reading Six of Crows. It’s delightful. So much fun.

Can You Keep a Secret? by Sophie Kinsella <— SO FUNNY ALERT!! Cait can’t stop laughing and she’s driving everyone around her crazy! 😉

Jean: Hey guys, a book I’ve been waiting to go on sale finally did! Can You Keep a Secret by Sophie Kinsella. I know I heard of this book on here somewhere a long time ago! Another of hers, Remember Me?, is also on sale!

Cait: On Jean’s comment about the Sophie Kinsella book sale I bought can you keep a secret and honestly haven’t stopped laughing! My family are ready to throw something at me! Thanks Jean

Laura: Isabel Jordan’s “Semi-Broken” (Harper Hall Investigations Book 4) was released today. This is literally the only book that could coax me out of my book hangover after reading “Never Sweeter: A Dark Obsession Novel” by Charlotte Stein.
  • Accidentally on Purpose: A Heartbreaker Bay Novel by Jill Shalvis <— JILL SHALVIS SUPER-BARGAIN ALERT! Tee hee! This one looks like fun!! I love it when “friends” sabotage potential dates. 😉 “As far as Archer’s concerned, nobody is good enough for Elle. But when he sets out to prove it by sabotaging her dates, she gets mad—and things get hot as hell. Now Archer has a new mission: prove to Elle that her perfect man has been here all along…“
  • Commitment by Nia Forrester <— SOUNDS FORBIDDENY!!!! HE’S A FAMOUS RAPPER & THEY CAN’T STAY AWAY FROM EACH OTHER… “…what’s worse, while he’s never committed to any woman before, she’s committed to someone else. Still, they can’t stay away from each other…” Jan tells us WE MUST READ THIS SERIES!!!

Jan: I started reading this back in March but took a break cos I was nervous about the angst coming :-/ Now I’ve started again from the start. I’m determined I’m going to get through it this time. I LOVE the rest of this series. And I LOVE the h and H of this one, Riley and Shawn. Just, Shawn, don’t do it!!! Noooooo!!!!!! Don’t break her heart! (and my heart). (But I already know from the other books that all will eventually end well. It’s just the pain and angst of the journey!)*shouts out* Everyone should read this series!!

  • Sempre by J.M. Darhower <— OLDIE BUT GOODIE MAFIA ROMANCE ALERT!! And Kathy FINALLY just read it!
Kathy: I just finished Sempre by J.M. Darhower. I am so embarrassed to say that I bought it in 2013 and FINALLY read it!! It was so good. I couldn’t sleep last night as I stopped with 80% read and wanted to see how it ended. I can’t wait to start Sempre Redemption. It makes me wonder how many treasures are just sitting on my Kindle waiting to be read!!
  • The Hot Shot by Kristen Callahan <— KRISTEN CALLIHAN’S LATEST SPORTS STAR RELEASE… SHE’S A PRICKLY PHOTOGRAPHER & BECOMES HIS ROOMMATE ALERT!!! And Kandace LOVES IT!!

Kandace: I’m reading The Hot Shot and it’s giving me beautiful butterflies. I think it’s going to be one of my favs of the year.

Jean: The Hot Shot (just read The Game Plan (Game On Series Book 3) so really looking forward to Finn’s story!)

  • The Last Girl (The Dominion Trilogy Book 1) by Joe Hart <— DYSTOPIAN THRILLER ALERT!!!! Fabi is reading this one, that I can’t wait to start. It’s a complete trilogy, and I have the first two books!!! YAY ME!!!!
Fabi: Maryse, I can’t put it down. I stayed up late reading. I got up early to read. Then I took a two hour lunch reading (oops). It’s dystopian with a bit of apocalypse and a dollop of thriller. It’s kept me on the edge of my seat so definitely working up to a 5 star for me.
  • The Brave Line by Kate Stewart <— I LOVE THIS AUTHOR & I totally one-clicked her latest release (it’s super-bargain priced!!). MINE MINE MINE!!! A dispatcher starting over… and a COP!!! YAY ME!!!! “…Fueled by a new career as a dispatcher, she’s determined not to let her scars weigh her down. She apologizes for nothing, especially her insatiable need for a certain police officer...”
  • Tyler (Riding Hard Book 4) by Jennifer Ashley <— LIVE!!! SEXY WESTERN BY JENNIFER ASHLEY ALERT!!!
  • White Hot Kiss (The Dark Elements Book 1) by Jennifer L. Armentrout <— JENNIFER L. ARMENTROUT LOVE TRIANGLE ALERT THAT MIGHT MAKE YOU FALL FOR BOTH OF THEM!!! Amy found us this one on super-sale!
Amy: White Hot Kiss by Jennifer Armentrout (first book in the Dark Elements trilogy)… right now! Total feels from all the YA PNR/UF books of a few years ago. I still can’t believe how she made me fall equally for both Zayne and Roth. I was thrilled with who she chose but oh, my heart…seeing the other guy have to walk away HURT.
  • Fix You (Second Chances Book 1) by Mari Carr <— LIVE!!! HER BEST FRIEND IS A ROCK STAR & SHE’S IN LOVE WITH HIM ALERT!! “...This New Year’s Eve heralds the year she’s going to tell Rob the truth. Even if he is on the road, reaching for musical stardom with his band. Her plan is derailed when she discovers a lump in her breast—and it’s not “nothing to worry about”…“
  • Red Queen by Victoria Aveyard <— HUGE HIT FANTASY ROMANCE/THRILLER ALERT! MichelleS: I decided what the heck, I’ll download sample of Red Queen. Totally hooked. Finally some good writing!!!

Robyn: Michelle S….the Red Queen was such a good book. I’ve read the whole series and am waiting for the next book to come out. You won’t be disappointed! I also bought all the books in hardback from Costco a couple months ago. I scored,the lottery on that one!

Reader Question – The book with the ex-wife that uses their kids to manipulate him into coming over…

YES!!!! I think I’ve read this one! Lauren read one of our recent reader questions, and it reminded her of a book SHE’S looking for. Her description of it makes me think of a Kristen Ashley book (Motorcycle Man & Sweet Dreams comes to mind for me). But maybe that’s not it?

She asks:

This got me searching my library for a book I read a while back…..the h’s ex-wife is constantly calling him to come over, saying the kids are sick or crying for him, that she needs groceries, that something needs fixing in the house, or the kids are begging for a bedtime story from him, etc.

He always goes because he’s a good father but the ex won’t let him bring the heroine so the h & h fight about it constantly….he sees that he’s being manipulated but won’t “rock the boat” because he’s afraid she’ll take his visitation away.

The ex-wife comes & goes in & out of the h & h’s house all of the time.

I can’t remember the book!!! I’m still looking but it’s driving me crazy.

Anyone know this one?

Reader Confessions – Lisa one-clicks books that she’s too afraid to read…

Book temptation is hard on us! We can’t help it!!

Tee hee!!! Lisa’s confession makes me laugh, ’cause I’m kind of the same way (although my book-hoarding kicks in hard, just like Lisa’s 😉 but mine is for fantasy books – I’ll explain later). But for some of you that might not know the terms she’s referring to, they’re made-up terms by our crew here to distinguish between certain genres.

So here’s a little hint to help you understand what she means for when you read her confession:

“Death Club books” are the books that some of us (so MANY of us) love even though an important character might… die. Okay, or, I’ll just come right out and say it. Dies. Most definitely (although we try to avoid saying that, since we don’t like to spoil books). But once it becomes known (or some INSIST on the spoiler), it becomes a part of the unofficial “death club” list. Obviously, I haven’t made that list (not officially) since that would be… wayyyyyyy tooooo spoilerish. 😉

Marmy books are those that have a crazy twist, or jaw-dropping ending, or a throw-your-kindle across the room type of moment that you’ll never forget, and might actually tear your heart out, and that MIGHT turn off some readers that are looking for a more… light-hearted or promised “HEA type” of book. BUT BUT BUT!!! They could VERY WELL have an HEA. Just that the journey there is a train-wreck of “Marmyness” (P.S. Marmy comes from mixing the names Maryse & Amy (Marmy) because we both tend to lose our minds and our hearts, over the same CRAZY stories).

And Lisa has an issue with those. She says:

Lisa: Book confessions. I love it.

My most ridiculous book habit (I have a few) would be buying the the crazy Marmy’s and death books I know damn well Im too chicken-sh!t to read and then filing them in my Pandora Box file on my kindle.

Never to open them. Its fear of missing out. And a waste of funds.

Oh. And I sniff books.

HAPPY NEW RELEASE DAY!! Can I tempt you with some of these heavy-hitters? Oh I don’t even have to try… there are some SERIOUS favorite authors on this list!!! Tara Brown, Denise Grover-Swank, Tijan, Kristen Callahan, K. Bromberg, K. Webster, Emma Hart, Kendall Ryan, Tillie Cole…. the list goes on and on and on (and ON… because I found some new-to-mes that have me just as excited). You bet I highlighted them! 😀

BREAKING NEWS UPDATE!!!! ALESSANDRA TORRE’S LATEST IS LIVE TOO! Trophy Wife (it’s a re-release of sorts but way updated!) —->

What gave me a blurb jolt from this list? EASY! Lost in La La Land (Tara Brown’s latest with a machine that can allow you into your fantasy of becoming a part of your favorite book. But there’s a problem… Eeeeeeeep!!! I have a feeling this one will be awesome!), The Hot Shot (she’s his new roommate and she’s not his type and yet…), What’s Become of Her (psych-thriller!!! The new love of her life might not be all that he seems… or MORE than he seems 😉 Or is she paranoid?), One Kiss (her one night stand ends up being the absent father of the student she’s tutoring!!), Mixed Up (she needs a chef and hires a Michelin starred chef/her brother’s best friend and she HATES him!! Tee hee!!!!), The House Mate (overworked single father and his new nanny that lives with him), The Player (super famous, injured baseball player, and SHE has to help him), Damnable Grace (the bad-ass biker and the sheltered captive from the cult), The Shatterproof Heart (she’s a killer and HE just kidnapped her… and she’s thrilled!). Ruh roh. 😉 Lots of fun reading here, and I even skipped over a few new releases that I want to read, because I have to catch up on the series first.

  • Fallen Crest Home (Fallen Crest Series Book 6) by Tijan <— LIVE YESTERDAY!!!! TIJAN ALERT (in case you missed it)!! She’s a HUGE FAVORITE here! Okay so… she was going back home to see her mother… “I avoided her for a year and a half, but I couldn’t hide anymore. Mason had an internship in Fallen Crest, so we headed back for the summer. And when we got there—no one was prepared for what happened.” P.S. Here’s the series reading order.

Nay: Wow! Is the Fallen Crest series *that* good?? I haven’t read any of them, but have them all, I think, except for today’s release.

Amy: Yep Nay, for us Fallen Crest is THAT good. I read the first (Fallen Crest High) years ago when it was the only one out and had the original cover and LOVED it, then I came here and found out others loved it just as much, and I was thrilled. It’s one of the very few I have followed and kept up with over the years, and I love, love, LOVE Sam, Mason, and Logan. LOVE THEM. The writing improved as the series went on (even from the first book to the second book), and it has been great to see the growth in that area for Tijan.

  • An Exaltation of Larks by Suanna Laqueur <— WE 5-STAR LOVED IT and now MichelleS finally read it and LOVED it like we did!

MichelleS: I finally read Exaltation of Larks. OMG!!! You guys were so right. It was awesome. % stars. Loved it. Can’t wait for the new follow up book. It was my “Pick for Me” book, but I guess it could also count as my April Challenge (read a book everyone has read except for you) book? Can I count it as both? LOL. Now I need to reconsider Fish Tales, because it’s the same author!!! Certainly it must be equally as amazing? Why did I not go pat the sample from Kindle?? Huh huh? Someone tell me it’s as good as Larks.

R: It’s better MichelleS! Just totally and completely different. I have it in my car on audio a (*read* it first though) and whenever I go anywhere, it’s on. I JUST came home from the store and didn’t want to get out of the car because I couldn’t stop listening to it.

Michele: I have never posted on here before (so you’re pulling me out of lurking status) and I have not read Exaltation of Larks yet – – it’s sitting in my TBR- – but I have to tell you Fish Tales was amazing!

Nay: Read Fish Tales, MichelleS!!! SOOO good!!

Fabi: MichelleS, I agree with the others, Fish tales is even better than Larks. TBH Michelle, I only read the first one. You know I prefer male POV and the 2nd book is the story in “her” pov.

R: Hold up!!! MichelleS, you **really** should read book 2 to get the FULL effect. It’s a freaking awesome book by itself, and no, there isn’t a CH, BUT, book two is what takes it from being an awesome book to a masterpiece. It fills in all the blanks, even the ones you didn’t know were there.

Joy: I just finished reading An Exaltation of Larks! Best Book Ever!!! It took me on such an emotional rollercoaster. I feel so empty inside, now that I’ve completed the book. The writing is phenomenal. I literally felt like I was a character in this book, experiencing every part of it as if I were talking to Jav, Alex, Val, Trelawney, Roger, Deane or Ari. I want more. …This book has left me with such a book hangover, that I can’t get into a new book because I’m so hungover. Thank you for recommending this book.

Jodie: It has fantasy, action, romance, Greek Gods, awesome characters and a fantastic storyline.

MichelleS: She is a great heroine. Strong. Super snarky. A total bad @$$. It is Golden Dynasty meets Percy Jackson meets Throne of Glass. Seriously.

Fabi: I’m rereading Red Rising before starting Golden Son too. It was a 5 star for me the first time and amazingly it’s even better the second time. There are so many quotes I want to save from this book. Pierce Brown is a genius. He became an auto buy for me with his very first book.

Michelle: Hey yeah Fabi Red Rising is fantastic! I tore through half of it last night and cannot wait to get home like I literally have to talk myself out of sneak reading it today!

  • Undeniable: Dom & Gigi (Beg For It Book 5) by Callie Harper <— SECOND CHANCE ROMANCE ALERT!! “They haven’t seen each other for four years. He’s been serving in the Special Forces. She’s finished college. They’ve had time to move on. Neither one has…” (and it’s super-bargain priced!)
