Author & Book News Roundup – April 16th 2017

By 28 Comments

Happy Easter everyone!!! I have a feeling it’s been a busy weekend for everyone (what with the tax weekend, and the easter eggs hunts) but the news still abounds! In fact, I made us a little list of the extra-good stuff! 😀

Like…

Simon & Schuster reminds us about this show TONIGHT ON STARZ!!!!! P.S. Based on THIS BOOK: The White Princess (The Plantagenet and Tudor Novels Book 5). OMG I LOVE THIS COVER and if I can remember right, I read that it’s the “Game of Thrones” for women. Oooooooooh I LOVE the sound of that.

“Don’t miss it! #TheWhitePrincess premieres on @SuperChannel tonight at 9:00PM EST! https://ow.ly/E5DR30aPTUU“

Colleen Hoover has just announced that she had to cancel her upcoming play for her book It Ends with Us: A Novel (P.S. I LOVED this book!! In case you missed it, here’s my review). She says:

“It is with great regret and sadness that I must announce IT ENDS WITH US the play has been cancelled.
Believe me when I say this decision did not come easily and is out of our control… (you can read more here)”

Max Monroe has a new book coming out and Grey found it for us saying: “So, Max Monroe is releasing a new book on the 25th, Dr OB. I’m excited. I love them… LOL!” eek Eeeeeep!!! I just looked it up and I found it!! Not on preorder yet, but we can play with the details. 😉 They say:

Dr. OB will be a LIVE release on April 25, 2017.
This book is a standalone romantic comedy that is part of the St. Luke’s Docuseries Novels. And believe us, you’re going to love these guys. Especially, Will.

**Dr. OB blurb**
It’s just a docuseries about your career as an OB/GYN, they said. It won’t interrupt your life during or after filming, they said. It is a great opportunity for the hospital and your practice, they said.

Well, they—the television executives who seem intent on ruining my career and personal life with a fair number of creative liberties—lied.

Now I’m stuck dealing with the consequences of believing them. What devotion I’d hoped to earn in respect, I’ve instead received in patients flashing me seductive smiles and flirtatious winks during their exams. How’s a guy supposed to convince the most perfect woman he’s ever met that he’s not as much of an idiot in real life as he appears to be on camera?

With all of the show’s side effects taking root like parasites, it’s going to take a lot to persuade Melody Marco to be anything more than my new nurse. But I can’t get her out of my head. I want her.

Good thing I’ve never been one to back away from a challenge…
Get ready, Melody.
The doctor is in.

Tillie Cole has TWO BIG SURPRISES for us, and both are coming soon!!! In just a few days, her book “Damnable Grace” will be released (April 23rd) and is a part of her Hades Hangmen series (not up for preorder yet) AND AND AND!!!!! I Do, Babe: A Novella (Hades Hangmen) will ALSO be released April 23rd (and is already up for preorder!!). She says:

*I Do, Babe: A Novella (Hades Hangmen #5.5) is to be read AFTER Damnable Grace (Hades Hangmen #5)*

Hope you love it!!!

Kristen Ashley also announces more books in her MAGDALENE SERIES, and D.G. found us the news saying: “OMG!!! OMG!!! Sqweeeeee!!! Just saw where Kristin Ashley has a third Magdalene book coming out!!! LOVE ❤️ LOVED the first two! I CAN’T WAIT!!!!” So I researched… and here’s the author’s very own sneak peek of “The Time in Between”. 😉 She says:

Kristen Ashley: “Hmm…I might have sent this in final to be formatted.”

Jan: Oooh goody. I liked the Magdelene books too. Slow, drawn out, but beautiful love stories. *excitedly goes to check out latest KA news*

Dot Hutchison has a new psych-thriller release!!!! Kim found me THIS awesome news about a book #2 sequel of a book many of us buddy-read together (remember this one??!!!! The Butterfly Garden (The Collector Trilogy Book 1) <— How could we forget?!) She said: “I know Butterflies in the Garden wasn’t your absolute favorite. I gave it a solid 4. BUT, the author has a second book releasing soon.” And here it is!!!! The Roses of May (The Collector Trilogy Book 2) <— DON’T READ THE BLURB unless you’ve read book #1. 😉 P.S. Here’s my review of book #1: “The Butterfly Garden”. *shudders*

Kylie Scott released her latest cover for her upcoming novel, Chaser (Dive Bar) (she says it’s her favorite cover so far!!). He’s a bad boy player and she’s a single pregnant-about-to-be-mom…

Starting over in a small town, Jean is determined to turn her wild lifestyle around and be the kind of mother she always wished she’d had. Since local bar owner and all round hottie, Eric Collins, is now determined to steer clear of her pregnant self, it should be easy. When she goes into labour during a snow storm and her car slides on some ice, it’s Eric who comes to the rescue…

Amy Harmon has a sequel too!!!! The Queen and the Cure (The Bird and the Sword Chronicles Book 2) will be coming out in just a few weeks, and she’s released the cover and blurb!! P.S. Here’s my review of book #1 (The Bird and the Sword)

There will be a battle, and you will need to protect your heart.

Colleen Hoover released an extended scene for her “Confess” TV show…

“I’ll Love You Forever Extended | Confess Show We all needed more time with Adam and Auburn and now thanks to all of you. we have it! Check out this extended #ConfessShow scene and watch the full series on go90: go90.show/confess.”

Mia Asher is tempting us!!!! She has a new book coming out called “Love Me in the Dark” (not up for preorder yet, but here’s the HOLY MOLY HOTNESS cover & blurb!!) and it’s coming out April 23rd! She teases us with…”I look at you and dare to hope.” And then THIS (OMG!!!!!):

When he touched me, my body sang–
my soul came alive.

But I belonged to another man,
and he didn’t want to let me go.

Kim Holden‘s Bright Side is super-bargain priced right now. And I must insist!!!!!!!!! In case you haven’t read it yet and haven’t discovered what all the fuss is about, this INCREDIBLE tear-jerker is one I think you should read it now!! (P.S. Here’s my review)

Book Review – The Widow by Fiona Barton

By 4 Comments

The Widow
BLURB JOLT alert and I got it on super-sale. I one clicked it SO hard considering some of the reviews and recommendations and I was dying to get to it!

bev: Maryse?? Have you heard of The Widow? Just saw a A review for it. Guess it is a psych/thriller/mystery type like Gone Girl and Girl on the Train. A bit tempted.

Leah: Just finished The Widow by Fiona Barton, a good one if you want psychological suspense. Her husband has died, but was suspected of *spoiler*. You start to wonder did he really do it? And then: did she have anything to with it.

Amy: I actually JUST clicked The Widow over on Amazon and then came here to share how great it sounds, but apparently bev beat me to it. Great minds think alike, right? ;) It DOES sound like it’s going to be a fabulously interesting one.

Maryse: I’m reading “The Widow” and I have no idea what’s going to happen, and am enjoying it for the most part, except for all the detective’s parts. I’m always interested in the bad guy and the victim, but never the police-procedural stuff…

bev: I hope in the end The Widow works out for you, Maryse.

Maryse: Me too bev… I’m in “court” now (a court case… but I know this story is going to twist into so much more than this mystery).

Jen C: Oooh I’m reading The Widow at the moment too. Only a few chapters in and really liking it.  I’m kind of excited to hear there are detective bits and court bits to look forward to?! Kind of work coming to life lol.

Yep! Some of us love that extra detective stuff in it (and with good reason) but I tend to want to stick to the two main characters involved, when I read. So for that, this one was a little slow for me (even though it kept me guessing the whole way through), but definitely a cautionary tale worth reading, especially in our day and age. HOLY MOLY this is why we have to be careful, especially when we’re online, my friends!!!

I won’t say too much about where this goes (reveals or even the underlying HUGE issue at hand), other than the subject matter IS disturbing, but thank goodness, NOT detailed. Either way, it will make you uncomfortable. Strangely enough, this book isn’t SO much about that, as it is about uncovering a mystery (solving a crime) and the wife (now a widow) dealing with the aftermath, and “aftermath” deal thing with mystery of it all…

I’m a passenger, not the driver, I wanted to tell him. Anyway, the pills should let me carry on being Jeanie when I need to be.

…And us, the reader wondering WHO is the guilty party, and how it all played out.

It all comes out, but oh boy does it take its time. In fact it is delivered via multiple POVs (from the wife, to the husband, to the detective, to the reporter, to other victims and suspects involved) and anything and anyone is a suspect at first. That was a bit juggle-worthy in itself as I was trying to situate myself in the story, but then the back and forth (from past to present in multiple POVs) made this one somewhat drawn out, and tedious. I liked it. I had to know WHERE it was going. I was SURE there was a twist somewhere in this whole psycho-drama, an while I will admit to be a little delighted in a certain twist (YES!!!!), it was overall… underwhelming despite the overwhelmingly deplorable topic.

So what’s it about?

Jean was both grieving and relieving from the recent death of her husband. He’d been hit by a bus and killed instantly, in the street.

Everyone was very kind and trying to stop me from seeing his body, but I couldn’t tell them I was glad he was gone. No more of his nonsense.

That said, he’d also been the recent subject of police and public scrutiny for a crime he was suspected of committing. So much *suspect* activity surrounded her husband… and yet, some others, also.

Did she know more than she let on when or even before it happened, or is she a victim of a predator, too?

He didn’t welcome my company when he was on the computer. When I used to take him a cup of coffee, I had to knock before going in. He said I made him jump if I suddenly came into the room. So I’d knock, and he’d turn off the screen and take the cup off me.

This is the main theme of this story as we come in and out of her POV (and that of many others), reliving, and LIVING their lives, with and without him in it.

I didn’t want to think about it anymore. It was too hard to keep everything apart in my head. My Glen and this other man the police talked about. I needed to keep things straight.

I wanted to believe him. I loved Glen. He was my world. I was his, he said.

Good. I contemplated DNF’ing it only because it wasn’t as crazy as that blurb lead me to believe (oh I had the ultimate blurb-jolt on that one) and I had a hard time connecting to her (the one I TRULY thought would have me addicted to this book)… let alone the other multiple POVs that the author wanted us to explore.

It’s a strange feeling, owning a secret.

But I had to know. And now I do. 🙂

3.5 stars <— Interesting, and well written, but convoluted, slow, and not as twist-worthy as I expected it to be.

Guest Review (my sister!!) – Foreigner by C.J. Cherryh

By 2 Comments

Foreigner: 10th Anniversary Edition (Foreigner series) by C.J. Cherryh

Review by Johanne Pearl Couturier

4.5 stars

Science fiction at its best! Imagine humans lost in space. A LOT of humans. The planet they are close to is already inhabited by a race of humanoids that seem to have developed technology in a way that looks like humans when they were using steam trains. Some humans decide to colonize and others will just go on in their supersized spaceship to find a better place.

They land and establish the laboratory in an area where they think there are no people living close by, but they are wrong and first contact… well, it rapidly leads to war, both parties not understanding each other… written many many years ago, this is so realistic!

Two hundred years later, humans are still constricted to their island and only one human, who is chosen between a bunch of others going through a special training, can live in the “Atevi” community. He is the link between the two worlds, serving as ambassador and a scholar to collect information so that the humans get to understand this world better. Bren Cameron, one of those “paidhi”, is doing his best, thinks he’s doing a good job, but there is so much more about the Atevi that he does not get at all!

How would you feel being alone in a world of giants with expressionless faces, hardened features and raven colored skin, where there is no word to translate “friend” but more than 10 for “betrayal”? Where it is OK to hire assassins from a specialized guild to kill someone? Where associations shift like the wind? Where you have no clue if signs of friendship are really that? But Bren Cameron loves those people even if they don’t get them.

This novel is full of surprises, action, diplomatic intricacies and more!!! One thing I LOVED are the macheiti, beasts that Atevi use as horses but also as soldiers because those beasts can attack with their tusks, their hoofs, and their teeth, making a mush of their enemies. They hunt too! I want one soooo bad! All black and so huge because they can carry an Ateva, whom look at Bren Cameron and think he is the size an Atevi kid.

When you live with humanoids who do not show their emotions… who seem to have NO emotion, how can you get a love story going… well you don’t for now… but I believe something is going to happen soon!!! Oh, in this book, you meet Ilisidi, the strangest granny I’ve ever met, but, damn it, I love her!!!

If you take your time learning all the new strange words and names, somewhat close to Japanese culture, then you’ll have a ball reading this book.

C.J. Cherryh wrote more than 60 books and she knows how to build a world, a culture and play with diplomacy and emotions in a way that makes us suspended to know more. Can’t wait to follow Bren Cameron’s adventures in the next book! Damn I’d love a macheiti! 😉

Friday Finds & Reader Recommendations – April 14th 2017

AND my book-buddies!!! 😀 *snuggles all of you*

  • Lady Louisa’s Christmas Knight (Windham Book 6) by Grace Burrowes <— *HAPPY SIGH* INDUCER ALERT!! HISTORICAL ROMANCE and Jan recommends it!
Jan: Terrible title for the book, but it’s another nice book in this series. I’m trapped in another HR craze at the moment (it happens now and then ;) ) For some reason the titles of the books about the girls in the Windham series are all pretty corny titles. But enjoyable books all the same. (And it’s not even Christmas LOL). I like series about siblings. Joseph in this book is a wounded vet of the Napoleonic War. He is also a widower with two sweet little girls. Louisa has some shady secret, but I know all will be well in the end :) Happy sigh…….
  • Power Play (A Blades Hockey Novella Book 1) by Maria Luis <— NHL HOCKEY STAR ALERT!! “…Charlie Denton has been handed the most impossible assignment from her stick-in-the-mud boss: get an exclusive interview with the NHL’s golden boy, Duke Harrison. The catch? She crashes her car, and he helps her, but… “…After wrecking her car by colliding with the town moose, she meets the most handsome hero she’s ever seen. Unfortunately, her savior, Will Abbott, is also the son of her client–and he wants nothing to do with the new website or the city girl creating it…“
  • Silent Child by Sarah A. Denzil <— PSYCH-THRILLER ALERT!!!! HER YOUNG SON VANISHES WITHOUT A TRACE… and comes back years later, a broken teenager. “Ten years later, Emma has finally rediscovered the joy in life. She’s married, pregnant, and in control again… … until Aiden returns. Too traumatized to speak, he raises endless questions and answers none. Only his body tells the story of his decade-long disappearance. The historic broken bones and injuries cast a mere glimpse into the horrors Aiden has experienced…” TONS of great reviews and it’s super-bargain priced today!!!
  • Turning Back (The Turning Series Book 2) by J.A. HUSS <— LIVE!!! J.A. HUSS ALERT! AND IT’S FORBIDDENY SOUNDING… *blush* “…I lived in the dark for three years. My whole world revolved around the whims and happiness of three men. It was just a trip into the forbidden. A way out of a bad situation and forward into nothingness…”
  • Where Good Girls Go to Die (The Good Girls Series Book 1) by Holly Renee <— HER BROTHER’S BEST FRIEND ALERT! “…He watched me fall, spiraling out of control, and as I reached for him, he wasn’t there to catch me. So I ran. Four years later, I never expected to see him again. He was still my brother’s best friend, and he was more unavailable than ever...”
  • Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum <— “What if the person you need the most is someone you’ve never met?” Ohhhhh yes it sounds SO good (I remember this one being recommended before) and now Jacki recommends it!
Jackie: I just read a really good young adult book called Tell Me Three Things by Julie Buxbaum. I picked it up a couple months ago when it was bargained price, it no longer is. But just suggesting to keep this on your radar in case the price drops again. I would highly recommend this one.
  • Etched in Bone (A Novel of the Others) by Anne Bishop <— HUGE-HIT SERIES CONCLUSION!! Recent release and Tessa FIVE-STAR LOVED it! Here’s the series reading order (must be read in order!) and I LOVED book #1 (and need to continue). P.S. The author confirmed 2018 will have more “The Others WORLD” type books. 😉 YAY FOR SPINOFFS!

Tessa: I finished Etched in Bone. New exploding fluffballs, Skippy doing that thing that just made me have happy tears, the poor little girl, the bad guy, the two observers, penpals, Sam, the bike scene, Simon and Meg…

Five star, yes, but I’m seriously going to miss the courtyard.

AUDIOBOOK L:DVERS

  • AND! Here’s the fun-tool again! —> Find out which of YOUR Kindle books are available as audiobooks at a BARGAIN-PRICE! <— This thing is so cool (Amazon calls it “Matchmaker“)! It’s an Amazon feature, that scans all of your Kindle books and will list all of the ones you have that are also available as an audiobook at a discounted price (not normal audiobook prices). This way, you can switch back and forth, seamlessly between your ebooks and your audiobooks. VERY COOL!
  • Dirty Red by Tarryn Fisher <— ONE OF OUR FAVORITE ANGSTY-CRAZY SERIES and Stacey recommends it in audiobook format!
“Tarryn Fisher’s Love Me With Lies series (Opportunist, Dirty Red and Theif) is so good. Each book is told from a different POV, and is not just a re-hashing of the same events. This series is excellent on Audible (especially the “other woman’s” story, Dirty Red).”
bev: Maryse I finished my audio book of Aristotle and Dante Discover the Secrets of the Universe. And it was marvelous. …The narration is so good.

Reader Question – Bethany is looking for some “the other woman” book suggestions…

By 29 Comments

UPDATED!!! This is now officially a “reader recommendations” list of this genre!! 😀

Bethany has some extra reading time on her hands and she has a craving. It’s taboo, forbidden AND controversial (and sometimes even creepy!!) but maybe you can help?

She asks:

Hey Maryse!

I have a week off and need desperately to fall into a book black hole and was hoping to get some suggestions 🙂

I’m looking for books that have an ‘other woman’ aspect to them. Either stalkery female or just straight in your face “I want your man” I loved the other woman aspects from Kade – Chantal Fernando and Kristen Ashley’s mountain man series (the first two)

Any suggestions would be great, please and thank you

Has anyone read a good one?? List ’em below, and I’ll turn this into a forbiddeny recommendations list, too! 😀

Maryse: I’m going right off the bat with Tarryn Fisher’s “Bad Mommy“. That one was just plain awesome and definitely had the Other Woman aspect to it. Three different POV’s but ALL of ’em excellent and intense.

Tessa: The Opportunist (Love Me With Lies Book 1) by Tarryn Fisher

Lisa: Tarryn Fishers Opportunist series. Oh and F*ck Love.

Nay: Yes! The Opportunist series is a must for this!!!

Stacey: Agree! Taryn Fisher’s Love Me With Lies series (Opportunist, Dirty Red and Thief) is so good. Each book is told from a different POV, and is not just a re-hashing of the same events. This series is excellent on Audible (especially the “other woman’s” story, Dirty Red (Love Me With Lies Book 2).

Maryse: Stacey, that is one of my all time favorite series.

Theresa S: Tiffany Snow writes love triangles. Good author. Andrea Smith writes some goodies you might like

Lauren:

Jen C: Amore: Part 1 & Amore – Part 2 (2 parts) by Bella Jewel had the other women aspect to it with a bit of a twist.

Ashley: These aren’t so much ‘in your face’ ‘I’m taking your man.’ But they do have an ‘other woman’ aspect to them….

Lisa: Yes!! Maybe Someday.

Stacey: Oh, Avoiding Commitment by K.A. Linde! So ANGSTY. He actually asks her to convince the other woman to marry him!!!

Kooloo: Oh oh I just finished, “Something So Right” by Natasha Madison definitely had the OW… and I definitely had a wanna slap a b*tch moment!!! Teehee

Sarah: A Modern Love Story by Jolyn Palliata. One of my favs!

Jeannie S: Something Borrowed: A Novel by Emily Griffin – definitely the “other woman” book, and yet I could sympathize.
