Reader Favorites – Fabi’s Favorite Audiobook List

Fabi is our resident audiobook lover. While I think she reads more than listens, I know she’s started listening to audiobooks regularly on her daily commutes and she’s hooked!

And here are a few “Fabi” details about her love of audiobooks:

➜  I like audio books too. I always have one going anytime I’m driving. … Since I only get an hour or two of listening time/day Mon-Fri, it forces me to savor the book instead of fly through it like I normally would. Well, not as fast as some of you do…but still.

➜ the least expensive Audibles I find are the ones that have Whispersync for the books I already have on my Kindle library. Since the tbr is so big, there’s always something there I haven’t gotten to read yet. Sometimes I picked up a free Kindle book and can add Audible to it for $1.99. I use that tool that Maryse posts above to help me find Audible versions of books I already own with. You just have to sample the narrator first to make sure it’s a good one.

➜ …right off the top of my head, Lover at Last: Black Dagger Brotherhood, Book 11 was a huge favorite of mine. But, you have to have followed the series to get the full impact, even though it’s a stand alone novel inside the series.

➜ for my new audible listen, I’m going to start Jan30′s recommendation, Seven Years. It sounds like it’s a complete series now and the books may read as stand alones anyway. I didn’t even check on the narrator before buying this one. lol I think I’m a little giddy with wanting to start new books this weekend. …. I’m loving it. Nicole Poole is a fantastic narrator.

➜ Audio books – depending on the narrator can either add to a book or detract from it. Right now I’m listening to Donna Grant’s Dark King narrated by Antony Ferguson. He has a Scottish accent that adds unbelievable authenticity to the story… Of course, I don’t know if it was a real Scottish accent or not. But it seemed he had a harder time with the American accent of the only American character than he did with the Scottish ones. Of course it was PNR with dragons and such.  :-)

➜ Tom Hiddleston is the BEST voice I’ve EVER heard from a narrator. Too bad he did so few of them before he became a hot shot actor. You should listen to a sample. *swoon*

➜ the Audible subscription is cost-effective only if you use it enough to make it so. I’ve discontinued it and restarted it a couple of times based on how much I use audio books at the time. Some audio books cost well into the $20′s, so the credit that you pay $14 for is cost-effective as long as you “buy” at least one of those per month. Mostly, it’s 1 credit = 1 book. Never use your credit on a $1.99 book because that would be throwing money away. Credits will roll over for a few months if there isn’t a good expensive book you want in a particular month. …The last one I used a credit on was Marked in Flesh. The price is $24.50 so by using a credit I saved about $10 on it. The next one I want to use a credit on is $17.14 (30% reduced because of the subscription and still $3 more than the monthly subscription costs). I used to go through a couple of audio books a week so I had a higher credit subscription back then as well as taking advantage of their sales and bonus credit buys.

➜ Now I don’t spend as much time driving and read more on my Kindle so I take advantage of the Whispersync bargains we get when we already own the Kindle version of the book. That was long…hope it made sense.

➜ I also subscribe to Audible but I save those credits for expensive books. …You definitely got the hang of those Audible credits. I use mine on the expensive books and fill in during the month with the $1.99 whispersync ones on my Kindle tbr. If I remember correctly, I think they’ll offer you one more reduced rate period after the initial one. I’m not 100% sure because when I did it some years ago I had the highest monthly subscription book number because I was commuting such long distances. It was way better than listening my constantly off key singing. Ha!

AND!!! She’s prepared a favorite audiobooks list just for us!!!

“This was harder than I thought it would be. First because I couldn’t sort by rating on Audible.com but second and most importantly, a lot of my 5*s were part of a series. I tried not to include any more of those. Then…I ran into the fact that you’ve probably already read all my 5* romance books, so I threw in some that were outside the romance genre for you to look at.

Caine’s Reckoning: Hell’s Eight Series, Book 1 by Sarah McCarty – 4* story, 5* narration “…the Hell’s Eight series is hot hot hot!”

The Second Ship: The Rho Agenda, Book 1 by Richard Phillips – 5* story, 5* narration (not sure it has any romance :-/)

Dangerous Highlander: Dark Sword, Book 1 by Donna Grant – 5* story, 5* narration

Soulless: An Alexia Tarabotti Novel by Gail Carriger – 5* story, 5* narration (good, funny and cute)

Desired by Nicola Cornick – 5* story, 5* narration (historical romance NOT a debutante)

The Warded Man by Peter V. Brett – 5* story, 5* narration (holy crap this fantasy series is good, but only a slight nod to romance in this first book)

WWW: Wake by by Robert J. Sawyer – 5* story, 5* narration (amazeballs, no romance, but favorite author with a wild ride of a story)

Halfway to the Grave: Night Huntress, Book 1 by Jeaniene Frost – 5* story, 5* narration (Bones…)

Daemon by Daniel Suarez – 5* story, 5* narration (possibly the best technothriller I’ve ever read)

Terminal Freeze by Lincoln Child – 5* story, 5* narration (horror, thriller)

Hominids: The Neanderthal Parallax, Book 1 By Robert J. Sawyer – 5* story, 5* narration (the strangest, most unique romance I’ve ever read, all-time favorites list)

Finally, for whatever it’s worth, my top 3 wish list items on audible are:

  1. The Beast: A Novel of the Black Dagger Brotherhood by J.R. Ward (getting this one on the 18th because I have to listen to this narrater – he’s simple the voice of the BDB for me)
  2. Seveneves: A Novel by Neal Stephenson (because I can’t believe I’ve waiting this long to read this one)
  3. Blood Destiny: Blood Curse Series book 1 by Tessa Dawn

Book Review – Cocky Bastard by Penelope Ward & Vi Keeland

Cocky Bastard
Okay so this is definitely one of my new favorite super funny, slightly angsty, but full on “new-adult feel” reads. Just a well rounded, fantastically written story, that flowed so well, I can’t even tell when one author stopped writing, and the other author kicked in.

A great pairing, both in authorship AND in main characters, and WE LOVE IT!!

Tee hee!! My reactions while reading “Cocky Bastard” (and yes… the goofiness continues). 😛

Maryse: Okay I’m already chuckling with glee reading Cocky Bastard, and I’m only in the first few pages. Tee hee!!!

Jackie: Your going to absolutely love it!!!!!

bev: Maryse after my current read I was thinking of starting Cocky Bastard too. I didn’t realize until yesterday it was a road trip book. Love those.

Cristina: I’m ready Cocky Bastard right now and yes Maryse it’s HILARIOUS!! Definitely lots of laugh out loud moments! I’m crushing on Chance BIG TIME! I’m taking a break right now to get some actual work done (BOO!), but I’ll be starting part two tonight! I already read the first page and I’m like, “Say what?!”

Johanne: I guess I’ll have to add it to my “to read” list. The cover model really looks like a cocky bastard… (<— My sister!! :D)

Maryse: It’s actually the cover that had me hesitating. It was a bit… er… “much” for me (I thought it might be too cliché in the bad-boy aspect) but the story came through big time! And now I actually understand the cover. It has it’s own little story. 😉

There’s no doubt why “Cocky” (aka “Chance”) made so many of us fall head-over-heels. He’s… everything. EV-ER-Y-THING!!!!! He’s an ex sports star, hot as heck, sexy and silly, and a real guy, despite his seeming perfection. And best of all? He’s a true hero, but not that glorious, super-hero type. Chance makes mistakes. Big ones, even. But OMG when he tries to redeem himself, and when we find out the whys of who he is… I’m just TOTALLY JEALOUS of Aubrey.

Why does Aubrey get to have all the awesomeness?! Grrrrr. 😉

But no… I’m so thrilled for Aubrey, and even better yet? I’m thrilled I got to “be” Aubrey for the first half of the book. I haven’t laughed that hard, reading, in weeks. Maybe months!! OMG if it wasn’t the hilarious dialogue (and mess-ups!!) between these two that could barely stand each other at first, to their amazing interactions, to the darn GOAT they picked up along their road trip,

“Let me get this straight,” Chance said with a skeptical tone.

“We didn’t hit the goat, but he faints when he’s scared and he’s blind.”

“That’s right.”

Chance erupted in laughter.

LOL!!! My friends. The goat. OMG THE GOAT!!!!!!!!! 😛 “Mutton”

The perfect “binder” to these two, and I loved that silly, fainting, smelly baaaaaa‘ing ball of goofiness.

I screamed at the top of my lungs.

We heard a thump against the window coming from the car parked just behind us. Chance hopped up to check on things. “Ah, crap. You scared the sh*t out of Mutton. He just dropped down.”

“Oh no.”

Tee heeeeee!!!!!

But what I loved the most? The intense attraction that had me glued, and my heart beating double-time!!!

Again… yes, I’m jealous. Imagine that… their “meet cute”, and what forced them to stick together for a bit, and then the true mini-adventure they found themselves on… getting attached every step of the way.

But OH NO my friends… this isn’t pure happy-sweetness. ‘Cause OMG the romance-angst kicked me in the gut and flipped me the bird. “Ha Ha!” it taunted. You thought we’d be road-tripping all through the book, didn’t ya? It all sure seemed promising… didn’t it? I even was SO SURE about one part of it, and thought it might be a twist. But I was wrong.

‘Cause then the story switches up, and I was left mouth agape!

  1. Because of the surprise… umm… thingie that happened. <— Tee hee! 😛
  2. Because of the why. <— WOW!

So what’s it about?

Aubrey is at a rest-stop, playing with a bobble head when “Cocky” (aka “Chance” standing behind her) makes a joke at her expense, and she drops the bobble (and breaks him). Flustered and annoyed, she calls him a few choice words, and heads back to her car, giggling as she sees said hot “Cocky” (<— OMG!!! Hahahah!!) having issues with his motorcycle.

When he sees her smirking, he smirks back…

I rolled my eyes and muttered, “You again.”

He snickered. “Did you end up buying a sense of humor?”

“I used the change to buy you some couth instead.”

’cause it appears she, too, will not be going too far with her vehicle (flat-tire alert!!). That is, not without his help. And since they are both headed to California, he offers an exchange of services.

“If I change your tire, you let me ride with you.”

“Ride with me?”

“Ride me, yes.”

“What did you just say?”

“You’re hearing things.”

Ugh. She’s stuck with this hot, cocky, mess of cuteness!!! Poooooooor Aubrey. Grrrrr (yes… that’s my jealousy).

“What’s C.B. stand for anyway?”

“Those are my initials.”

“Let me guess… Cocky Bastard?”

“See… I would have told you my name, but since you’re so clever, I think I’ll just let you guess.”

“Whatever, Cocky.”

hahahahahahahahahahah!!!!!!! *snort* :P!!!!

But the fun is just beginning and you will be laughing your head off, I can promise you that!

And I’m going to stop there, ’cause the fun is in the road trip… and the angst is in the “getting attached” when both have their own lives that they need to tend to. You’ll see. 😉

“Seriously, though, Aubrey. After we part ways, what are you going to do with him? You can’t keep him.”

My heart suddenly dropped.

After we part ways.

Yep. OUCH.

What did I love? All of it. Plain and simple, it’s a car-load (and romance book-load) of fun, and feels.

What didn’t I love? Well… this is just nitpicking, for the sake of nitpicking, but I wish we had stayed in her POV for the entire book. First half was hers, and second half was his, and while I sure as heck appreciated his POV (and still chuckled and swooned), experiencing this friendship and possible romance (and the angsty parts??) from only HER POV? Gave me much more thrills and chills, (and *oomphs*) than from his. Had we continued through her eyes only, we would have still gotten his story, but we would have gotten all of her angst. My angst. Which is how I love to feel it.

Still… SO worth the read, and I must insist on this one!

DG: Jana Aston is batting a 2-0 in my book! A hot alpha *sighs deeply*, a goofy h, a little love, a little drama, a little stubbornness and a whole lot of lovin. A great and easy feel good read!

Lisa: DG I’m with you. I loved Right….and Wrong. Great unputdownable perfect fluff for me.

  • The Bad Ones by Stylo Fantome <— SUPER-DARK AND BLOWING MINDS ALERT! So it’s back on the list. 😉

Jean: I’m still reading Bad Ones. It seriously is like a train wreck that you can’t look away from and I need to get to the end for that shell shocker!

Ela: The Bad Ones *full body shiver*….eeeep I still can’t get some of those images out of my mind!!!!!

DG: I was in book shock over the Bad Ones… Tessa and Ela – glad it wasn’t just me. Not sure what category to list it in….

Cristina: I finished the Bad Ones Last night. I can see this categorized as a psych/horror book. Definitely dark… like abyss dark. If you want to know what happens when two sociopaths find one another, this is your story.

Michelle: Omigod I’m laughing so hard that I’m crying! Laura recommended My Commander by Alanea Alder and it’s freakin hilarious! I wish it had audio so I could listen on my drive. On the tampon scene…five paranormal alpha males trying to figure out what a period is and what tampons to get *giggling*
Lisa: The Passage is the most amazing book. It will be made into a movie (Im pretty sure I read that movie rights had been purchased). Fabi you must read it….you wont forget it. Its like the vampy version of The Walking Dead. Huge and awesome!! … The Passage might fall into a horror category in some respects (as Jan130 mentioned its not Stephen King style horror at all) but I would describe as an apocalyptic world building epic. The vampires are NOT Twilight or BDB hotties but a new species of predator. But it has elements we love….like an awesome kicking asses and taking no prisoners heroine in Alicia. And characters so well developed you’ll miss them. Its a tale of survival. I loved it.Jan130: BTW if you haven’t read The Passage, it’s fabulous. A bit sci-fi, a bit vampirey, a bit dystopia end-of-the-world Stephen King’s The Stand style. Fantastic book. …Yeh, The Passage is epic. It’s a huge read, so be warned!. Starts off pretty conventional sci-fi thriller but you’ve gotta stick with it. It just takes off and carries you along with it. Loved this book. *Something is coming* (said in a whisper….. Oh yeh!

What to Read After Paper Princess

Welp. Looks like I wasn’t the only one to fall hard for this poor girl enters rich-people life with bad-ass brothers/bullies (aka not HER brothers… but sort of 😉 ). It was pretty much every “guilty pleasure” that we love in new adult angst and drama! In fact, here’s my review. You’ll see, I BIG-TIME devoured it!!

The thing is… book #2 comes out in July (here’s the series reading order), and my reader friends and I are wanting more “like that” to hold us over until we get there.

Meagan: Hello! So strange request for you, but after your review I read.. No I DEVOURED Paper Princess! It was freaking amazing! It’s been so long since I read a book that was that incredible and I can’t stop thinking about it. I was so excited to read the second one, then I realized I have to wait till July Do you have any amazing recs that can fill my void till then? The more the better. And thank you for introducing me to this gem! So soo in love

Cristina: I finished Paper Princess! Very reminiscent of Fallen Crest, which means of course I loved it! Warning: The CH is a doozie!! The next book is a continuation of the story. One thing about these types of series is that usually the second book is twice as good as the first! I won’t give any details as to not spoil anything for anyone. I almost didn’t want to include the CH detail, but for those of you out there who are worried I wanted to forewarn you. It is a pretty awesome story though! Even though I hate CH’s, I’m really glad I read this one, it’s just what I needed right now. It makes me want to re-read Fallen Crest! However, July seems like forever away. What other series are similar to these?  ;-)

Angela: I hadn’t read this one but I bought it as soon as I saw your post, I agree very reminiscent of fallen crest series which is one of my favorites. I’m already 30% in and have a feeling I’m not quitting any time soon.

We’ve certainly been reminded of some other favorites as we read Paper Princess, bits and pieces, or just the “feel” in general remisncent of some already super popular die-hards.

WHAT TO READ AFTER “PAPER PRINCESS” RECOMMENDATIONS:

Fallen Crest by Tijan <— Tessa: Paper Princess was soooo good. Pure happy good. Reed was just perfect, Ella was sassy, and I adored Easton and Valerie. *grins* SO much love for it right now. It’s very Fallen Crest like. That’s probably one of the reasons I loved it. That CH though, that made me grin big time. Yeah, a weird reaction but that should take a lot to get through.

Jaded Series by Tijan <— Robyn: Tijan also has the Broken and Screwed series and Jaded Series. They deal with the same age group and genre as FCH. Loved both series!

Broken and Screwed by Tijan <— Susan: Hey guys if you love the fallen crest series then you should definitely read Tijan’s Broken and Screwed series, ooh and the Jaded series – seriously just as amazing as this one x

Make Me (Make or Break Book 1) by Amanda Heath <— DG: Maryse, this vaguely reminds me of something….and I can’t for the life of me remember the name of the book! YA/NA where girl goes to live with maybe father/stepmom or godmother and transfers to a prep school like Jr./Sr. year. Starts out like a bully book…..its details are teasing the outer edges of my brain!!! Again, similar but not Fallen Crest. From what I remember the grandmother comes to “save” her when something happens to her parent(s). The grandmother is rich where as the girl was not. She is set up in the pool house maybe instead of the big house to give her privacy and to adjust? And she is then enrolled in a rich kid prep school where she is bullied…..this WILL drive me crazy until I figure it out! OH! OH! I found it! Thank you Goodreads! It was Make Me by Amanda Heath. And thanks Fabi and Tessa for reminding me it was similar to Fallen Crest (which was what I searched …books similar to Fallen Crest).

Complicate Me: The Good Ol’ Boys by by M. Robinson <— Robyn also recommends these! “The Good Ol Boys series by M Robinson is also along these lines. Very good.”

Eagle Elite Series by Rachel Van Dyken <— Maryse: I hear Rachel Van Dyken’s Eagle Elite Series is in the same feel. I haven’t read it, but it’s pretty popular (high school, with a girl that is picked on and a group of brothers (or guys?) that rule the school).

Tessa: Eagle Elite? Yes, read it now! I absolutely loved it. Just pure love. … Eagle Elite series… *swoon* If you can suspend belief, Elite becomes an awesome book. The rest don’t need the suspended belief thing, but are really good.

Bev A: Elite by Rachel Van Dyken is a good bully book. Love the whole Eagle Elite series by her.

Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire <— Maryse: It also definitely had a delightful tinge of Beautiful Disaster by Jamie McGuire for me. Considering the five brothers, the set of twins in the brothers, and the reasoning behind their own personal angst in the grand scheme of their lives. Also, that the main bad-boy brother was a fighter and considered hard to get (nobody made him settle) and he pretty much ruled the school. Mind you, once you get past that, everything changes, story-wise, and since I’m always looking for my original “rush” I could certainly appreciate the fun (and my own big crush) in this one!! (my review)

Tasha J: Paper Princess for me was like a mix between Tijan’s Fallen series and that book by Jamie McGuire we all know and love ;)

Corrupt by Penelope Douglas <— Marina: Paper Princess…. wow. Could not put it down and focus on anything else. Cristina, I agree it did remind me of Fallen Crest High. I only read the first but definitely. Also of Corrupt in a way. Without the raw and creepy factor. Maybe it’s the brothers or posse thing. I think I need a discussion link! Maryse, can’t wait to hear what you thought! I truly dislike cliffhangers and avoid books with them, but for me it was worth the read. (sidenote from Maryse: YES!! It did have that touch to an extent. my review)

Kelly: Less than a 1/4 way through (Paper Princess) and am really liking it. So far it has a bit of a Corrupt feel with ruling the school…… So finished and not like Corrupt at all. Loved it!

Rosemary Beach series by Abbi Glines <— Meagan: The other one that I think is super close is abbi glines Rosemary beach series 🙂 ( which I LOVED) (sidenote from Maryse: YES!!! That is a perfect recommendation. Rush was such an ass at first and I LOVED that! (my review of Fallen Too Far)

MichelleS: OH – Fallen too Far …I really liked the Rosemary beach series. But I was in the mood for that teenagey-young-adultish kind of thing at the time. It’s been a while but I remember a bunch of scenes and an interesting twist on the back story that unfolds. It’s worth a look if nothing else is doing it for you.

Tessa: I could go on and on about bully type books. That’s why for a little while I was reading stepbrother books, because the stepbrother was usually a bully. Best of those is still Fallen Too Far by Abbi Glines. *swoons*

Jackie: More recently I would say Fallen Too Far definitely is a all time favourite though definitely on the lighter side of the taboo scale!

Sempre by J.M. Darhower <— Jaime: Maybe Sempre… She goes to live with brothers. I loved that book too! (sidenote from Maryse: Jaime, YES!!!! That is a perfect recommendation. Thank you! I’m adding it. 😀 my review).

Kyong: Hi, Maryse! I discovered Sempre here on your site a few days ago and I just finished reading the second book about 10 minutes ago :) I enjoyed it so much that I had to leave a comment here! Both Sempre books are fantastic heartwarming, and heart racing! Definitely 5 stars!

Kim:  it is a Mafia book…and it is VERY intense, BUT worth Reading!!! Sempre was one of MARYSE’s “top” choices…and I definitely agree it is GREAT and different from ANY other story I have EVER read!!!

The Keatyn Chronicles by Jillian Dodd <— Leslie: I’d add Keatyn Chronicals by Jillian Dodd too!

Tessa: Keatyn Chronicles were really good. It’s YA, but the story really had me on the edge of my seat. It makes you think sweet, then smack reminds you of the danger.

Samantha: The Keatyn Chronicles: Stalk me, Kiss me, Date me, Love me. I dont know what to say. They are all fantastic. Jillian Dodd is brilliant and the books take twists and turns you dont expect.

Leslie: The Keatyn Chronicles are my favorite obsession. I can not do anything but analyze every single word that Jillian Dodd writes. Forget work, sleep, food, family…..it’s all about Keatyn and figuring out the mystery of who “the one” is amongst her many boys!!!!

Another “Guess the Book” question for today, and this one sounds kind of scary!! Like a psych-thriller and now I must know it!

Book question….cannot remember the name is the book…it goes something like this…

a girl is trying to escape from her ex who is a cop. She leaves him and he files a missing person report but she comes back. She does this a few times so that when she finally leaves him, he will not be able to report her missing because he will look bad at his precinct.
