Giveaway + a super-sale! Tijan is giving away either a signed copy of her latest book, Kian, or a $15 gift card (winner’s choice)!

October 29, 2015 By Maryse 90 Comments

<— *squeeeeee!!!* Tijan’s latest release (Kian) is already a hit, ranking almost immediately (and still) in the top Amazon Kindle 100 books, and right now, it’s on super-sale!! *happy wiggle* Plus, our very own fellow readers right here are LOVING it!

Fabi: I’m reading Because Of Kian right now. (Love that name). It’s good so far. Anyone else reading it? I love these bargains. I get to indulge without the guilt.

Allison: I’m at 56% in Kian and feeling all the feels. I love when a good book makes my chest tighten up. I’m like Walter in the movie The Money Pit when he gets trapped in the carpet in the hole in the floor. “My chest is constricted!”

Tessa: Finished Kian and it was so good. It’s a standalone, too. I only wish the end was longer, even though it was satisfying. It wasn’t cut short, I just wanted more

Allison: finished up Kian by Tijan. Awww I loved it! Kian was so good, so selfless. I love him. I enjoyed it – I thought the story was original. Definitely recommend it!

And Tijan has a fun fact about it!

“Something fun about it– I wrote Kian because I was inspired by a show on MTV and the characters wouldn’t leave me alone, even when I was trying to write Fallen Crest University.”

Hrmmm… I wonder what MTV show that was? 😀

P.S. In case you ever wondered how to say Tijan’s name, I saw her at the latest RT convention and there’s a video (in case you missed it)! 😀

Now for the giveaway!!

How to enter for a chance to win? Just leave a comment below and by 10pm EST, Sunday November 1st 2015, I will randomly select one winner to choose between the $15 Amazon gift card or the signed copy of Kian!

The winner will be contacted and will have 48hrs to respond with a mailing address, so if you are picked, do not delay or you will lose your chance. This book or gift card will be sent to the winner directly by the author.

Giveaway open to international!!

Reader Question – The book where she’s a hunter for hire, a local alpha hires her to find the werewolf girls who’ve been kidnapped…

October 29, 2015 By Maryse 3 Comments

It’s reader question day and today, Abbey’s question is first! She sent this to me last week, but she’s still looking and so I think someone here just might know. Considering how we were all shifter-fanatics not that long ago…

Abbey asks:

“I was wondering if you could help me? I’m looking for a book, but I don’t remember the author or the title, a friend said you might be able to help. This is what I remember..

Around 3/4 years ago I read a book on kindle, I can’t remember the authors name or the books name.

All I remember is the first chapter is the girl at a young age coming back from cinema with her dad, they are in the parking lot when he tells her to hide under a car and to not come out.. He’s killed by were coyotes or werewolves.. I can’t remember, She goes home to her mum and tells her what happened, they bury her dad and torch the apartment then move,

A few years later she comes home to their new apartment, the whole place is bloody and her mum has been killed just how her dad was, she rings her mums male friend, I think he’s an ex that they still talk to.. He comes and get her, he torches the apartment with her and trains her how to hunt the supernatural. They both go after the were animals that killed her parents, whilst fighting them the man dies.

A few years later she’s a hunter for hire, a local alpha hires her to find the werewolf girls who’ve been kidnapped, I know they are teenagers,

At one point she is in a diner with the alpha when a shoot occurs..

I remember she finds the girls, I know she falls in love with the alpha..

That’s all I can remember…”

Does anyone know this one?

Robert Galbraith – Cormoran Strike Series Reading Order

October 29, 2015 By Maryse 2 Comments

SEPTEMBER 7th 2025 BREAKING NEWS UPDATE! THE LATEST RELEASE JUST WENT LIVE & IT’S #5 on ALL of AMAZON KINDLE right now!!!

Remember that new book that J.K. Rowling put out a couple of years ago but under another pen name? Well it’s a series now, and she’s THREE BOOKS deep already!

Plus… one of our fellow readers that’s been with us for a long time now and I’ve always found that has the same book tastes as me is LOVING this series! And because it’s a totally different genre than I’m used to reading, I don’t think I would have paid this one much attention, ut since she loves it, and I trust her book tastes BIG TIME i think I’m in!!!

Claudia: It’s just me that are addicted to Cormoran Strike? I’m reading book 3 of Cormoran Strike book#3 by the one and only (J.K. Rowling) by Robert Galbraith. Loving it!

bev: I can’t say how many stars because I really do not rate them, these are just the books I enjoyed the most. I did not squirrel and when I had to put them down could not wait to pick them back up again…. Cuckoo’s Calling & The Silkworm by Robert Galbraith. (listed in her book list!)

Hanneliane:I loved these!!! Book 1 was great, book 2 was good and I adored book 3. Such page turners! It’s kind of cool that somebody dusts off the good, old private detective character. And Galbraith / Rowling does it so well. If you enjoyed ‘The Girl On The Train’ and ‘The DaVinci Code’, you’ll like these too. The main characters are very well developed and with flaws but you end up really caring about them!

Book Review – November 9: A Novel by Colleen Hoover

October 28, 2015 By Maryse 130 Comments

November 9: A Novel
I read it (*squeeee*!!) and I’m here to tell you, you’re in for a treat!! It’s a totally unique way to tell a sweet love story. In true Colleen Hoover fashion, this one has all of her infamous feels (whether you’re giggling with glee at how clever her characters are, or wanting to throw your book in fury ’cause they can be so darn thick-headed sometimes!! 😉 ). The dialogue, the fantastic character introspection, POV’s from both characters (and yet you have no clue what’s gonna happen even though you know what they’re both thinking), everything that’s signature to this author is here.

And best of all? Not one, but TWO gasp-worthy surprise reveals.

Oh yes!! I was quite delighted. In fact the first twist was the one I thought was gonna be the big *thing* (my eyes bugged out of my head in sheer agony-tinged delight), ’cause I knew *this* was gonna throw a monkey wrench in the whole thing. And you know me, I love the book drama, but by the time twist #2 came about (P.S. I didn’t see it coming either), the whole story… pretty much comes full circle.

So what’s it about?

Eighteen year old Fallon is an ex-teen actress who’s career came to a screeching halt after a home fire scarred her face (and body) badly. She has an estranged relationship with her famous, emotionally distant, career oriented father, but is extremely close to her down-to-earth, wise and very loving mother. Her mother gives her an incredibly insightful bit of advice.

“You’ll never be able to find yourself if you’re lost in someone else.”

My mother isn’t famous. She doesn’t have an incredible career. She isn’t even married to the love of her life. But there’s one things she’s always been…

Right.

And Fallon is determined to live by it. So when her world suddenly changes for just a bit, when a gorgeous (but kind of train-wreck) of a guy looks at her,

I don’t usually notice people, considering they do everything in their power to avoid eye contact with me. However this guy’s eyes are intense, curious and staring straight at me.

TRULY looks at her, past her scars, and cleverly integrates himself into her life (I’d let you read that part on your own, but I can’t resist quoting this genius “rescue-attempt” scene):

I stiffen beneath the guy’s arm when I feel his lips press against the side of my head. “Damn L.A. traffic,” he mutters.

Random Dude just put his lips in my hair.

What.

Is going.

On.

The guy reaches across the table for my father’s hand. “I’m Ben,” he says. “Benton James Kessler. Your daughter’s boyfriend.”

Your daughter’s… what?

My father returns the handshake. I’m pretty sure my mouth is hanging open, so I immediately camp it shut. I don’t want my father to know I have no idea who the guy is. I also don’t want this Benton guy to think my jaw is touching the floor because I like his attention. I’m only looking at him like this because… well… because he’s obviously a lunatic.

He releases my father’s hand and settles against the booth. He gives me a quick wink and leans toward me, bringing his mouth close enough to my ear to warrant being punched.

“Just go with it,” he whispers.

He pulls back smiling.

Just go with it?

What is this, his improv assignment?

Tee hee! Oh I was already crushing hard in him!!

So friendship between them is sparked, and you’d be amazed at how much it progresses in just one day. My heart was beaming as I smiled through their goofiness, and their “getting to know you” stage. P.S. He’s a writer, and she’s a total book-addict, and us readers will certainly recognize ourselves in her, as she explains our book love (and book boyfriends) to him. 😛 Like when he asked her what he least favorite thing in a book was:

He makes a face. “Insta-love?”

I nod. “When two characters meet and supposedly have this great connection right off the bat.”

He raises an eyebrow. “Fallon, I think we might already be in trouble if that’s one of you least favorite things.”

*snort* 😛 Right?!! CUTE!!!

“Sigh.”

“Did you just say sigh? Out loud? Instead of actually sighing?”

“Eye roll.”

LOL!!!!!!

And Fallon has nothing to lose, going about her whole day with this stranger-now-friend, because she’s leaving L.A. to move to N.Y. THAT night. Of all the dumb luck. Or bad luck. But because they only have THAT day, they pretty much… bond. And you know what? Totally believable. Even their wishful thinking “deal” that he proposes (or as it she?) where they can meet again, once a year on that exact date for the next 5 years (you’ll find out why),

“What if we meet up again next year on the same day? And the year after that? We’ll do it for five years. Same date, same time, same place. We’ll pick up where we left off tonight, but only for the day. I’ll make sure you’re following through with your auditions, and I can write a book about the days we’re together.”

In that exact restaurant, is whimsical, sure, but why not, right? This could work! Plus, he’s gonna write their story!! *sigh*

And so this is the tale of a girl’s life, and a boy’s life as they go from “young adult” to “new adult” on one day, once a year. But while the story is mostly always progressing on November 9th (for us, the reader) it’s never just “that day”, of course. But it’s that day that we learn about the course of that year.

“I think the fact that we’ll continue living our lives is what makes this idea so great. We’ll both get to experience life like we’re supposed to at this age, but we get to be with each other once a year. It’s the best of both worlds.”

Quite ingenious, if you ask me. How can that possibly work? And yet I was I was intrigued. I was imagining all sorts of stuff.

Mind you, I did struggle with the first half/middle of book, as the “how” of it develops. Oh I found it pretty brilliant for sure, at least for the first meeting and then meeting #2 a year later. I was SO in. But as the story progresses, my “just go with it” mode crumbled, and I was, at times, incensed at the rules of their friendship. I just stopped believing it. There was some eye-rolling and huffing and puffing on my part. Grumbling and maybe a little cursing… and some name-calling from me (erm… I won’t share my notes with you. *blush*) What?!! I was exasperated!!! I was dubious.

I mean, maybe there are people out there that are so genuinely tenacious and unconventional that they could actually sustain this kind of quirky friendship, despite all odds. Because lemme tell you in real life? I have a hard time believing this wouldn’t have totally fallen apart by meeting #3. Just sayin’ 😉 And probably sooner.

But this is book fiction, right? It’s certainly not out of the realm of possibility that something like this CAN happen, and even if it’s highly unlikely, it sure is a fun escape!

And anyway, the minute surprise reveal #1 hit my screen, and my jaw dropped, and my heart sped up, I was thrilled (my notes here: “I accept this twist.”) <— LOL!! I suppose the adrenaline of that moment flooded my skeptical book-heart, and my “just go with it” kicked right back in and mostly held on, the rest of the way.

And by reveal #2, the depth of emotion and “reason” of it all, that I have grown accustomed to with this author’s brand of story-telling, radiated through.

Although I still have a few skeptical moments here and there (and a few questions unanswered) but that’s just my reality-side kicking in, and for a sweet story like this, my recommendation to you is… just go with it. It’s darn good!

4 stars!

BARGAINS & READER RECOMMENDATIONS (NOTE: bargain priced when I added them, but prices can change on Amazon, so make sure to check before you finalize your order).

Since it’s Halloween Week, I’m throwing in a bunch of SCARY read recommendations, along with our awesome romances. Jean asked:

Jean: Isn’t there a book out there that’s so scary you can’t sleep, need to leave the lights on, and jump at every sound in the house? Anyone?

Gerald’s Game (Signet) by Stephen King <— SCARIEST BOOK ALLISON EVER READ ALERT! Not bargain priced, but it sounds like the perfect read for this week and Allison recommends it BIG time!! “The scariest book I ever read was Gerald’s Game by Stephen King. For real, I read it when I was 19 and still lived at home. I ended up throwing it across the room and running INTO MY MOM’S ROOM AND SLEEPING ON HER FLOOR. That scary.”
Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill <— STEPHEN KING’S SON ALERT!! That is of course, until she read this one. 😉 “Until I read Heart-Shaped Box by Joe Hill. It scared the bee-jeezus out of me. I read it when it first came out and I am still afraid of it.” and Megan agrees, BIG TIME! “Ok- so I’ve been reading your blog for about a year and have never commented on anything so I’m nervous about giving up my lurker status but I saw in your review someone asked what was a stay up late scaredy cat book to read and I read only one or two scary books a year and Heart Shaped Box by Joe Hill is one that all this time later I still get creeped out about. Let me know if anyone tries it.“
Lisey’s Story: A Novel by Stephen King <— STEPHEN KING LOVE STORY ALERT??!! And this one sounds totally different for Stephen King, but Allison is absolutely head-over-heels for it!! A LOVE STORY? “Also, if Lisey’s Story by Stephen King is ever on sale, drop everything AND BUY IT. One of the most hauntingly beautiful love stories ever told. It was the book that, for me, made me realize that every marriage (or enduring couplehood) has its own language. I read it so many years ago, and to this day I still find myself quietly smiling when I notice my husband and I say something to each other that only we would understand. It makes me think of that book. And really, that book gave me that gift. <3” and Kat is happy to hear about it! “Allison, thanks for the recommendation. I own Lisey’s Story, physical copy, haven’t read it yet but definitely moving it up my TBR list.”
The Beginning of the End (Apocalypse Z) by Manel Loureiro <— Megan also recommends this one!! “I thought of one more to share with your group: I read Manel Laurio’s Apocalypse Z trilogy and it was really good. He’s Spanish and I had to wait for each book to be translated on Kindle before reading. I was so desperate for the third one I downloaded it in Spanish thinking it would all come back to me from college… I read the first four pages and only got out of it something about air, wind or heavy breathing? Basically my Spanish sucks. Bottom line: all three are in English and are worth it. A lawyer and his cat trying to survive zombie apocalypse!“
Mary: The Summoning (Bloody Mary) by Hillary Monahan <— CREEPY GAME ALERT!! Remember this one? It’s on sale and has lots of great reviews. I wonder if it’ll scare me good!
Good Time Bad Boy by Sonya Clark <— bev found us this one! “Good Time Bad Boy by Sonya Clark. It was a pretty good read.” and it sure does sound like something we’d enjoy! “College classes will be her ticket out of poverty and instability. She doesn’t mind waiting tables for the time being, but she could do without the rowdy rednecks who sometimes get handsy. When one of them crosses the line, she snaps and gives him and his stupid ten gallon hat the telling off he deserves, but causing a scene gets her fired…“
Off the Edge (Undercover Associates Book 2) by Carolyn Crane <— and bev found us this one, too! “Off the Edge by Carolyn Crane. Read & enjoyed one of hers.”
The Ground Rules: Rewritten by Roya Carmen <— I think Jean liked it!!! LOL! “Just finished The Ground Rules Rewritten! Holy Hannah! I hate to ask, but when is the third book coming out? Any way you can find this out for us Maryse? I’m dying here!”
Solitude of a Birdcage (Forget Me Not Book 1) <— SECRET LOVE TRIANGLE BETWEEN TWO BEST FRIENDS & ONE’S BOYFRIEND ALERT! Ohhhhh this one sounds romantically angsty!! I only heard about it ’cause book 32 just came out today, and so I was very intrigued… “When Isaac, Savannah’s boyfriend, falls victim to an act of violence that leaves him with no recollection of the prior eighteen months, both women tend to his recovery. For Savannah, it’s simply an attempt to care for the man she loves. For Maxie, it’s a chance at redemption. She tells Isaac nothing of the passionate secrets they’d been keeping from Savannah, nor of the unyielding feelings that nearly consumed them both.“
Black Lies by Alessandra Torre <— OMG I LOVED THIS ONE!!! Jackie found us this one!! “Just in case you haven’t already seen it Alessandra Torre’s Black Lies is on sale for 99 cents.” (my review)
Beg Tease Submit – Books 1-3: Submission Series Bundle #1 (The Submission Box Set) by C.D. Reiss <— BUNDLE!!!
Seven Day Fiancé: A Love and Games Novel by Rachel Harris <— SHE WINS THE BAD BOY AT AN AUCTION & MAKES HIM HER FAKE FIANCE FOR CHRISTMAS!!!! SOUNDS SO SWEET and it’s on super-sale today!! “Her family is expecting her to come home with a fiancé–a fiancé who doesn’t exist. Well, he exists, but he definitely has no idea Angelle told her mama they were engaged. Tattooed, muscled, and hotter than sin, Cane can reduce Angelle to a hot mess with one look–and leave her heart a mess if she falls for him. But when she ends up winning him at a charity bachelor auction, she knows just how to solve her fiancé problem…“

It wasn’t the best idea she’s ever had, but she was desperate—she’s not about to leave her seven-year-old son to be raised by her rigid, overbearing in-laws.” AND!!! “…Libby must deal with her father-in-law’s attempts to declare her an unfit mother, her growing feelings for Wade—a tattooed redneck single dad she met while hiding in a closet at Back to School Night—and the return of her sire, who hasn’t stopped thinking about brave, snarky Libby since he turned her.“
