<— I. CAN’T. WAIT!!!! Oooooh what an intriguing, eerie cover. YES PLEASE! You know I’ll be devouring Without Merit, especially with this tumultuous-sounding blurb!

Eeeeeep! But, for now, I’m in full-on power-reading mode (I’m chipping away at a darn good book, at least so far called The Fireman: A Novel), but I’m taking a quick break to bring you some book-world news! P.S. The “chipping away” of my book is ’cause,

Maryse: I’m trying to power read the Fireman today so I can have review and start a new book… but I just realized. I’m only at 40% because… it’s 771 pages!!! Oh. confused emoticon LOL!!!!!! Thank goodness our buddy read (for this one: The Unrequited) is only mid-week. P.S. The Fireman is good. Not at all scary (at least not to me… but then again… I’m only at 40%). *snort* :P”
Lee: I love the “Oh” … that happened to me a few days ago.. I read and read and went “OMG! I am not moving then realized it had 590 pages” LMAOOOOOO
Sue: The longer the better!!!

And now… THE NEWS!
First!!! PRIME DAY is this Tuesday, and that is the day that I lose my mind, finding (and buying) some serious sales. Over the last two years, I’ve purchased so many awesome things for my house, and for my cooking love, and of course… BOOKS, and can’t believe how lucky I am to have gotten them at such a discount. So not only will Tuesday be another awesome new book release day, but PRIME DAY squee-worthy goodies will be added as I find ’em. 🙂
John Green has a new book releasing in October called Turtles All the Way Down, and and was featured here on EW. Here’s a snippet of the article ➔ “Turtles All the Way Down is the story of 16-year-old Aza Holmes, a young woman who grapples with mental illness while investigating the disappearance of a fugitive billionaire”. And also a snippet of the interview where the author says:

“I’ve been working on Turtles All the Way Down for years, and I’m so excited to share it with readers this October,” Green said in a statement. “This is my first attempt to write directly about the kind of mental illness that has affected my life since childhood, so while the story is fictional, it is also quite personal.”

Kristen Ashley‘s “The Time in Between (The Magdalene Series Book 3)” (series finale!!!) is up for pre-order and has it’s gorgeous cover up!!! Second chance romance and it sounds so heartwarmingly angsty!!! Here’s just a snippet of the blurb (whole blurb on Amazon):

I’m so bothered by this–that there are people out there trying to capitalize on the fact that others still want these covers–that I’ve decided to pick a date to put all the old covers back up for sale (at regular prices) for a TBD period of time.
If you’re looking for old covers, stay tuned for more info.”

Alessandra Torre has posted the movie trailer for her upcoming book-to-film sensation, “Hollywood Dirt“. Check it out here!
Colleen Hoover is having a HUGE book signing!!! And it was featured in the Huffington Post (the article written by author Mara White)! Here’s just a snippet:

“Book Bonanza is the name of the extravaganza created by Colleen Hoover, her charity The Bookworm Box, and Indie Solutions that will descend on Denver, Colorado the weekend of July 20th 2018. All proceeds from the impressive event will be donated to SafeHouse Denver, an organization that provides emergency shelter, counseling and advocacy for victims of domestic violence and their children.”

J.A. Redmerski <— BLAST FROM THE PAST OMG!!!! She’s releasing a new post-apocalyptic book called “Everything Under the Sun” (but releasing it under the name “Jessica Redmerski”) It’s not up for preorder yet, but the cover and blurb are ready. WHAT A GORGEOUS COVER!! She posted the cover and blurb here and blogs about it here.
Karen Marie Moning FANS!!! Did you guys know the next Fever book is up for preorder? High Voltage: A Fever Novel is next!

Jennifer: Can’t wait!!! I need my Dublin fix lol. My friends have been in Ireland the past week and posting pictures. Made me want me to read the whole series….. again

Katherine Allred has a mini update on the re-release of “The Sweet Gum Tree“. She says:

“Thought i’d share the Slovenia cover for The Sweet Gum Tree. They did a great job. I’m hoping to have my version out next week.”
and goes on to comment:
“…I really wish I could use it on the US version. That’s how much I love it.”
Back in May, she described the cover for us:
“It’s almost done, ya’ll. I just saw the first draft of the new Sweet Gum Tree cover. It’s a single tree. On the bottom the cover is black. Behind the trunk is a golden sunset. Behind and above the leaves is a deep blue sky. It’s really gorgeous. Can’t wait until I can show it to you.”

Rosheen: Great advice. As an avid reader (very poor writer) reading an author’s creative work without it being honestly alpha read and properly edited can throw me out of a story. In particular continuity and time lines, character traits and written chapters all matching once you are engaged in a story.
R: Love this. Thanks so much for posting, Maryse. I actually have a couple amazing alpha readers I didn’t even know were alpha readers! I just call them my gluttons who must really, really love me.
bev: Maryse, not a rmwriter but the editing post was interesting. I know some of the ladies on here are beta readers but are some of you alpha readers too?
Fabi: Maryse, I agree with bev. That editing post and the information on her website is interesting. She seems like a sweet and talented young lady. bev, I’ve done a little alpha reading. Creative people amaze me. I love to watch their work in progress.
bev: Fabi it seems like it would be hard. To assess the book as a reader with all the opinions that come with that vs the writers vision. Plus what another reader would think…their opinion and taste.

A fellow reader-turned-editor (she went to school for this stuff – she has a B.A. in English!!) wrote us a cool, quick reference guide for those who are writing a book, and need some guidance. I thought it would be perfect to post here, since I know a few in our crew are actually authors too (some still writing for fun, and some about to release something!!). 😉 *squeeee*

How-to Get Your Book Ready for the Editor

As an editor, it is my passion to help authors publish the best possible version of their book. That is why the tagline of my editing business, Wrapped Up Writing, is, “Putting the finishing touches on your creative gift.” I don’t create the story, the world, or the characters, but I use my skills and abilities to make sure that the story is grammatically and stylistically correct, the world is believable and appropriately built to fit the plot, and the characters are fully developed. While editing is one of the most important steps that your book should go through prior to publication, there are some steps you can take beforehand to make your life, and your editor’s job, a little easier.
1) Finish your book: While some developmental editors will work with you as you write your book, such a feat is usually best reserved for writing coaches. Most editors do their best work with the entire book laid out in front of them. This way, they are better equipped to find spelling inconsistencies, redundancies, plot holes, and other structural issues. Hiring an editor after your book is complete is also beneficial for you, because it prevents you from spending additional money later on when the remainder of your book would need to be edited.
2) Read your manuscript: You’ve been hard at work on your story for months, maybe even years, and you have finally finished it. Be proud of yourself! Step away for a little while and celebrate your success. However, before sending your manuscript to an editor, read over it from start to finish. Even if you don’t believe you are good at proofreading your own work, the 3 a.m. writing mistakes or scenes written with one too many glasses of wine will stand out to you as you read over your work. Read it out loud to find awkward phrasing, use spell check for glaringly obvious mistakes, and use your inner-reader’s perspective for insight into your character development and world building. Once you’ve taken some time to really proofread your work, you will be able to submit it to your editor with more confidence and peace of mind. In fact, you might even save yourself some money, because some editors charge extra for work that has obviously not been proofread by the author. In other cases, editors will give authors discounts when they know that an author is diligent during their pre-editing proofreading process.
3) Use alpha readers: An alpha reader is a person that looks at your manuscript before it is edited and gives you honest, constructive advice to improve your story. An alpha reader can be a critique partner, another author, a trusted family member or friend, or a reader. Whoever you decide to use, they should know enough about your work and the genre it is categorized under to give you detailed feedback about a variety of issues, from character development to sentence structure. While their role may sound similar to that of an editor, they are distinctly different. Alpha readers help you see your work from a reader’s point of view. They read it the same way they would read a book from the library, and then give you feedback about what they liked, what they hated, what seemed strong, and what needed to be worked on. An editor’s job is much more thorough, in-depth, and meticulous to ensure that your work is as polished as possible. Using an alpha reader prior to an editor is extremely beneficial for both parties. It helps you as an author resolve any major story or plot issues, thus reducing the chance of numerous rounds of edits later on. Furthermore, it helps the editor see the full scope of your story and the direction you intend for it to take. This will ultimately help the editor best meet your needs.
If you try your best to accomplish these steps prior to submitting your manuscript to an editor, then the editing process will be much smoother and more pleasant for all parties involved. Laura: Tailspin by Jaime Roberts is a recent release that might be of interest to you. Based on the reviews, it’s a book that is either a one star or a five star read with no middle ground. It was my first one star review of 2017.

  • All the Lies We Tell (Quarry Book 1) by Megan Hart <— MEGAN HART ALERT!!! Recent release and Sharon gave it 4 stars!!!
Sharon: Finished All The Lies We Tell by Megan Hart. Excellent beach reading – even though it wasn’t a beach book. There was a nice amount of angst (probably a 3 out of 5) and it was a really good story. This is a series, but book 1 didn’t leave you hanging for Allie and Niko. I am looking forward to book 2. Contrary to the Amazon reviews, it wasn’t overly laden with sex either – in fact, it was a slow burn. Ooooh – I would give All The Lies We Tell 4 stars!

  • Torn (Devils Wolves Book 1) and Tied (Devils Wolves Book 2) by Carian Cole <— CARIAN COLE IS ROCKING WORLDS RIGHT NOW!!! UNCONVENTIONAL LOVE STORIES ALERT!!

Vicki: OMG Both books were awesome. Never read this author before so wasn’t sure what to expect. Torn was such a good taboo read and Tied hit me with all kinds of feels. Haven’t had a book hangover like that in soooo long!!
Tammy: Read both of these last week and they were amazing! Torn made my tummy flip like crazy (many many butterflies) and Tied was just as awesome but in a different way. 🙂
Kathy: I have read all of her books. I loved her Ashes and Embers Series. Just finished Tied and what the two main characters had to go through was just so heartbreaking. It definitely gave you the heart pulls.
Northernstar: I just finished Tied and it was full of feels! A touching story of two scarred souls coming together in a emotional and gripping read. Now, I need to read Torn. I’m keeping my eye on this author…

Melinda: I am reading Dear Aaron, I’ve had it for ages. I CANNOT put it down. It is sooo good. Best book this year. Our plane got delayed from Niagara Falls and I couldn’t care less as I was reading.

Can: OMG!!! I just finished reading a book by a new author and it was a 4.5- 5 star read for me. I could not put it down. It’s been a really long time since a book captivated me like this one. It’s called The idea of you by Robinne Lee.. Forbidden romance. Older woman, younger man/boy. This is the author’s debut novel and she hit it out of the ball park. You have to read it. You will not be disappointed. I want a second book. Not sure I am happy with the way it ended because I want more!!!

  • Until It Fades: A Novel by K.A. Tucker <— K.A. TUCKER ALERT!! She saves a famous hockey star (and it’s back on the list ’cause another fellow reader recommends it!!
Angela: Hey Maryse, I just finished reading until it fades by K.A Tucker. I loved it. It’s not her usual stuff but it was still awesome. I was sucked in right from the start. I only wish it would have lasted a bit longer. Towards the end it seemed to be concluded in 1 chapter. 4 stars.
