J.R. Ward – The Black Dagger Brotherhood Series Reading Order:

by Maryse on April 6, 2009 · 162 comments

in J.R. Ward, My Book Reviews, Reading Order Guide:

This is – hands down – one of my absolute favorite series EVER!! Addictive from the start, and I’m still obsessing over the “Brothers”.

In the shadows of the night in Caldwell, New York, there’s a deadly turf war going on between vampires and their slayers. There exists a secret band of brothers like no other-six vampire warriors, defenders of their race.

Amber C February 9, 2011 at 6:59 PM

Thank you so much for recommending the BDB series aside from Lora Leigh’s Breed series this is my favorite vamp series!!!

Maryse February 9, 2011 at 7:15 PM

It tops my favorites list! LOVE these guys. When I read each new installment, I strangely feel like I’m home… hehe

Amber C February 10, 2011 at 2:21 PM

You have fantastic taste in books!!! I’m reading the Midnight Breed series and the Dark Hunter series as well as BDB. I’m interested in the Fever series since you’ve talked so highly about it. Keep the recommendations coming and I’ll keep my iPad stocked full of book downloads. Thanks again!

Maryse February 11, 2011 at 9:32 AM

All three of those will keep you highly entertained! Promise!

Donna D March 27, 2011 at 1:48 PM

I have just devoured the BDB page by page and each and everyone one of them were delicious I can`t have a favourite I love them all,2 days until Lover Unleashed, oh yes!! Your blog is amazing, I am thinking about reading The Midnight Breed books next though it kind of feels like I would be cheating on the BDB !!Thanks

LaycieHart April 1, 2011 at 8:51 AM

1. I have to agree with your comment Maryse, that you feel at home whenever you read a book from this series. I just finished Lover Unleashed and felt like I’d come home!

2. If Quinn and Blay do not end up together I am going to be seriously pee’d off! But I guess we’ll just have to wait for that :(

3. When is the next book coming? I miss it already = sad times!

Maryse April 4, 2011 at 5:11 PM

Hi Laycie…I get the impression that Qhuinn and Blay will be official soon enough (she mentionned in a past chat that they would have a happily ever after), and will be getting a novella… YAY!

Eileen April 9, 2011 at 9:16 PM

I’m so happy that I found your website! I had no idea how many different authors and series there were or where to even begin. I have finished BDB series and fallen angels series, as well as lords of the underworld series..I try to make the books “last” but I can’t seem to help myself from finishing them in a very short time. I wait so long for a book release and then it’s over so quickly :( lol. My absolute favorite book was zhadist’s book! So while I wait for ward or showalter’s next release, any recommendations?

Maryse April 13, 2011 at 8:32 AM

Hi Eileen! Well, since you really loved BDB, I remember getting a bit of “that feeling” when reading Lara Adrian’s “Midnight Breed” series. Have you read it yet? It’s similar in style with the warriors in a compound type place, resistant to love, and proctecting the Elite vampires and humans etc…

Angie April 18, 2011 at 11:03 AM

I am so totally loving this series. I cannot get enough. I do not know if I have a fave brother or not. I seriously love them all! I do love Z and John, and Rehv too. hehe

Hmm I just saw a mention about the Fever series. My stepmom just told me about that one. I’ll have to look n see what you have to say before I give it a try. I’m going to start the Dark Hunter series tonight.

Maryse April 22, 2011 at 7:50 AM

Angie. The Fever series is one of my favorite of them all (and the Dark-Hunters, too). My mom is just getting into the last “Fever” book, and she is addicted. Won;y even start the latest J.R. Ward BDB, until she has that one finished. That’s how good it is.

Jackie D June 9, 2011 at 8:15 AM

I just finished the first book. HOOKED. Bliss is starting a new. Author with a big ‘ol series! Gotta go buy another book!

Diana July 10, 2011 at 9:12 PM

I absolutely love the BDB series. I could not put the books down. I’m so excited for the next book.

Lanre August 25, 2011 at 7:18 AM

i love the BDB series, i can’t wait for Blay and Qhuinn story, and also Layla

Maryse August 26, 2011 at 5:20 PM

Me too!! I think they will be getting their own novella…

Maite September 6, 2011 at 12:17 PM

After being a fan of Sherrilyn Kenyon’s Dark Hunter for so long, I had to admit that I’m hook with the “brotherhood”, it’s like they were the hunters first cousins…luv it!

Amanda Conner October 11, 2011 at 10:14 AM

Love your site! Ive read a few series from your list, such as the hunger games, fever series (loved) and fifty shades of grey and fifty shades darker (really, really loved) and now on the bdb series. I can’t put these books down to save my life ! I’m now on book 5, and I must say I’m in love with V. Loved him from the beggining! I’m sure after I’m done with this series ill find something else from your list…any recommendations?

Angie November 22, 2011 at 10:19 AM

I think your site is quite neat. The recommendations are great. always love to hear about a good series and that others like it before i start reading. gives me incentive. Has anyone read the Night huntress series. Totally head over heals over Bones! Short novels but very good. Love the BDB, favorite brother is Rhvenge and Zadist. Dying for Quin and Blay to be official. I think Manny is EXTREMLY hot and I cant wait for his completion. (trying not to give away stuff) love sookie stackhouse although the last book kinda left me a little unhappy. (just being honest, i expected sorta more ;P) i just purchased my nook color february of this year and the only books i have are vampire affiliated one way or another. currently in school so it makes it hard to read my required reading to obtain my associates degree when all i can think of is, ‘what is that vampire gonna do now!?!” i am sure I am not the only one that suffers this way, just maybe more intense then some may admit. LOL anyhow. glad i found your site. sorry for the short novel.

Maryse November 23, 2011 at 7:18 PM

LOL Angie!!! Loved the comment, and yes. I suffer from that very same affliction. My favorite Brothers would be Z, V, and *sigh* I suppose I’ll say Phury even though his book was disappointing. Oh Rehv was amazing. My mom’s favorite though, so I bowed out of claiming him. Also LOVED Wrath’s book. SO I’d almost say he’s a favorite. V and Wrath are both #2 for me. Nobody beats Z though.

Angie November 28, 2011 at 9:42 AM

I know what you mean, i have a place in my heart for Z and yeah phury’s book kinda pissed me off. Still love him. I started reading the love at stake series you recommend on your page. I love it so far. I had to laugh cuz i noticed that of course we are all human, funny how some authors think men with hairy chest are sexy and others dont . These are things that stand out to me. LOLOLOL insane in the membrane syndrome. LOLOL anyhow i am currently on book three and I am so hooked that I have to leave my NOOK at home because I dont trust myself to not read it while i am at work. I need help. do you know any good vampire theapist? LOLOL

Maryse November 28, 2011 at 10:12 PM

LOL!! Vampire therapist… wait. Can he be a vampire, too? Tee hee! *blush*

Angie November 29, 2011 at 8:25 AM

Oh my goodness i am almost done with book three of love at stake series. I am gonna need a therapist soon, vampires preferred. i want me some hot scottish dude!!!! really. O.M.G. I wanna say best one of the three so far. Loved the other 2, dont get me wrong, but this one has got my heart hopping around like a frog on a hot grittle! LOLOLOLOL

BIanca December 7, 2011 at 2:25 PM

im in love with blackdagger brotherhood!!!! i finished all the books so i was wondering if yours have and good books i can start reading??????

Anika January 4, 2012 at 5:01 PM

I just started reading this series before Christmas and I am in love. Already on Book #3 and I can’t put it down. I am a lover of Vampire books starting off with Twilight then the True Blood Sookie Stackhouse Series. Thanks for the reviews! Love your web site!

angie January 4, 2012 at 11:30 PM

Oh Anika, your gonna love them all. Hurry cuz a new book will be out soon.

Anika January 5, 2012 at 9:10 AM

Thanks Angie! I saw that was coming out soon! I know I will be done with the other books by then because its just too good to put down!

Angie January 5, 2012 at 12:19 PM

speaking for myself personally but i know many here feel the same, we need help. none of us can put the books down, we are under covers with flash lights, staying up until 2 hours before having to get up to go to work, ignoring husbands, leaving homework for later, laundry pileing up to read one more chapter. just one more chapter. As myself, i am in a lot of trouble. LOLOLOL in a good way of course. LOLOL

Maryse January 5, 2012 at 1:33 PM

LOL! I know how you feel. That sounds about right ;)

Anika January 5, 2012 at 1:54 PM

O my goodness! That is so me! I just finished 4 chapters while sneaking at work because I just had to know what was coming next. I can’t remember what I was doing before I discovered reading, but I am loving every minute!

bianca January 10, 2012 at 2:31 PM

I have finish all the black dagger brotherhood boOks and I’m dying without it I’m sO excited to read the latest one that coming out in march does anyone have any goOd suggestions for boOks I can read till J.R ward comes with new books? Hs anyone read fallen angels by J.R ward?

Anika January 10, 2012 at 4:41 PM

Hi Bianca!

Have you read the True Blood Books? Those are really good!

Faren Tooze January 31, 2012 at 6:08 PM

OMG!!!!! I read these books back in 2010 and have been waiting to read #9 and on are they as good as the rest

Leah February 18, 2012 at 1:39 PM

I did a search for a reading order for another series and you were the top link! Thank goodness you were because I found the Black Dagger Brotherhood here and picked up the first book based on your review. I am HOOKED! Loving this series! I know where to look for my next series when I catch up with this author.

Thanks Again

nikaila March 1, 2012 at 2:41 PM

BDB is my absolute favorite series, true?! I started reading them again!

Maryse March 4, 2012 at 4:48 PM

nikaila. I feel you. LOL! Best series!

Anika March 9, 2012 at 12:25 PM

I am almost done with Lover Unleashed! What am I going to do until March 27? That’s when book 10 comes out…..crying! Help!!! #BDB

Anika March 9, 2012 at 12:27 PM

And…how do you change the face on here from the little cartoon to a picture of myself? I have tried and I can’t figure it out. I am a little slow, I know! LOL!

Maryse March 9, 2012 at 3:00 PM

Anika. I think it’s done here: http://en.gravatar.com/ (you set up an account, upload your picture) and it’ll show up on all of the websites that use it, when you comment.

Maryse March 9, 2012 at 3:00 PM

Not too much longer of a wait ;) I’ve been waiting a year!!

Anika March 9, 2012 at 11:14 PM

Garsh! I forgot I am the last to read these books! Thanks for the gravatar info!!!

Anika March 9, 2012 at 11:18 PM

Yayyy! It worked! Now I have a picture. That’s me and my Sister! I am on the left. Okay, back to reading. I have been reading so slow trying to make it last as long as possible. I suppose I could just start reading them all over again. **Sigh**

Brandy R March 26, 2012 at 3:35 PM

okay i am just wondering where the story of son fits into the BDB series.. i was thinkinb maybe it has something to do with Mhurder.. maybe it doesnt fit in at all i dont know but i just wanted to know what everyone else thinks

Maryse March 26, 2012 at 5:03 PM

Hi Brandy! I’ve looked it up and it appears that “The Story of Son” isn’t really considered a part of her BDB series. But I’ve been reading that it’s an amazing story, so I’m going to see if I can get it and I’ll be able to give a better answer on that. :)

Brandy R March 27, 2012 at 12:22 PM

I have read t and it is such a sweet story and it does stand on its own…. it doesnt talk about the brothers but maybe it is just wishfull thinking.. haha but I dont know many people who have read it.. so I dont have people to talk about it with hahaha.. cant wait to hear your take on it!!! once you have the time to get around to it.. :)

sara May 20, 2012 at 12:11 PM

I love you site….anytime i need help finding books and what series they belong to and the order I come straight here cuz I to have an osession with things that go bump in the night…thank you!

Samantha June 14, 2012 at 11:13 PM

HOLY COW I just stumbled on your blog after googling “JR Ward reading order” and saw the news that Blay/Quinn is going to be the next book, and full length. You made my day/month/year! I am so, so excited for this. Thank you for updating your post!!!

Jenn June 30, 2012 at 6:39 PM

Hi, I just wanted to say thank you so much for being good at keeping up with your site. I read.. all the time, it’s my life line as a mother of four.. You also seem to read ALOT, and I can not tell you how great it is to have your site to check before starting a new series, for the correct reading order, comments and so on, because I know that based on your comments, I can trust that you understand what makes a book a “Great Read” or.. just worth it.. Nowhere else can I go to find reviews, order lists’, and so on in reliable detail.. Please keep up the good work, and Thank You So Much!!! :-)

Candace July 6, 2012 at 6:00 AM

I just have one question…. did anyone else yell out loud at some of the BDB i just now started reading them and am on Lover Awakened….. I love these books and glad that i still have more to read… but sometimes these books take alot out of me emotionally.. maybe i get to into the book. lol. i could actually feel the heart break in some of the scenes…. but i do love these books wish i had heard of them sooner….
Maryse keep up the good work i love your blog. Thank you for all the great suggestions….

Maryse July 6, 2012 at 4:44 PM

Glad to help Candace!! The BDB books sure addicted me. I read every one that was out in a row without any other books in between. Z is my fav!!

Tracy July 12, 2012 at 11:04 PM

Hi! Thanks for all the

Debbie July 21, 2012 at 5:18 AM

Wow…just finished Dark Lover in three days
Couldn’t put it down! About too start the second
book….hmmm think I’ve fallen in love with Wrath!!
If he haven’t read this series I highly recommend it!!

lynn August 3, 2012 at 3:03 PM

Oh wow love them to death! on book 7 I am finishing them way to quickly :(

Claudia August 7, 2012 at 4:56 PM

I had just finished reading 50, which I loved, I was at a 50 Shades of Gray passion party, and sad that I had finished all three books in record time! lol Thank goodness there was this lady there who told me about the BDB series because I love all four books so far. It’s weird, but I feel like they are a part of me or like I know them or something. That’s how much I’m into this series!!!! Love love love, glad to see/read that it’s not just me! :-) I’ve also been reading them in a row without any other books in between. I just dont want to read anything else!!! lol

Maryse August 7, 2012 at 5:45 PM

Oh I totally get it. I have become one with the BDB. LOVE them!

Heather August 14, 2012 at 4:41 PM

I’m SUPER intimidated to start this series because there are so many books!

Tracy August 14, 2012 at 5:36 PM

Don’t be intimidated at all. Once you start reading this series, you r going to fall in love with all the men in these books. You will be upset that you didn’t read them sooner. They r very fast reads b/c they r so good and juicy. Lol. Start them and enjoy!

Heather August 14, 2012 at 7:10 PM

Oh really? haha. I have the first two on my bookshelf…maybe i will!

Brandy Rocha August 14, 2012 at 8:39 PM

Yes it seems like a lot but once you get started you will get hooked and before you know it you will be don’t and wishing the next one was out already! They are my FAVORITE vamp series.

Tracy August 14, 2012 at 9:09 PM

I agree Brandy. I read the Dark Hunter series and even though they were good books they were no where near as hot as the Brothers. I can’t wait for Lover At Last.

Alicia August 15, 2012 at 4:02 PM

Why is the Lover Reborn book so much more expensive then the other 9? :) I have read them all. I loved the last one, Lover Unleashed

Brandy R August 15, 2012 at 10:05 PM

The only reason I can think of is because it is still new I know in 6 months usually the paperback will come out.

Claudia August 15, 2012 at 10:51 PM

Do not be intimidated by the amount of books in the BDB series. Trust me that you will be thankful that there are so many books because you just want to keep reading one after the other. Like Tracy said they are very quick, but very good reads. You will be back here commenting on how much you love the series and wondering why you were ever intimidated! :-)

Tracy August 15, 2012 at 10:57 PM

You are absolutely right!!! They are so good I’ve considered reading them again

Claudia August 16, 2012 at 12:21 AM

Well I’m only on the 5th book so far, but I’m sure I’ll feel the same way since I already love them so much!!

Heather August 16, 2012 at 8:21 PM

Goodness.. i think you guys may be right. I am almost finished with the first one!

Tracy August 16, 2012 at 8:25 PM

Wow. I knew you would love it! Happy reading

Claudia August 16, 2012 at 8:58 PM

I’m so glad you gave yourself the chance!! Enjoy & trust me you will… :-)

Crissy September 10, 2012 at 7:04 PM

It’s so funny, because first I remember thinking “Pffft, Please! Nothing can top the Immortals After Dark series.” But after reading these, I dunno…it just all felt more..personal and close knit. I feel much more invested in these characters. I don’t want to skip around series to series, but as soon as I read the newest BDB, I may have to follow your advice and go to the Breed and Dark Hunter series.

Jan October 18, 2012 at 9:49 AM

Can someone please tell me, in Enshrined – it starts of speaking of “the Wizard” – I am lost – who is the Wizard?

Brandy Rocha October 18, 2012 at 1:09 PM

man it has been so long it feels like since i have read that one and to be honest it wasnt my favorite one… I just pushed myself through it to just finish it. I cant remember completely but I think it is just the voice in his head. that is telling him what to do or something when he feels confused .. I think..

Brandy Rocha October 18, 2012 at 1:10 PM

and if i remember correctly he smokes so he wont hear it. the more he smokes the less he hears it..

Jan October 19, 2012 at 2:50 PM

thank you – I “sorta” thought that was it, but wasn’t sure if I had missed something

Debbie October 19, 2012 at 4:42 PM

Love this series! I’m totally hooked!!! My favorite brother is V but I am reading Tohr’s book now and it is my favorite – not finished yet but can’t put it down!!!

Claudia October 19, 2012 at 8:38 PM

I LOVE your lil side saying and it’s very true, u are never alone w/a good book!!! :-)

Terri F. November 13, 2012 at 6:54 PM

Maryse, I agree with your mom- Rehvenge’s book was my favorite of the whole series. I love him! There was something about him that touched me and he sacrificed so much to keep his sympath side hidden to protect the people he loved. He’s just awesome.

Maryse November 13, 2012 at 7:01 PM

Terri… I adore him too. One of my favorite brothers (I think my #2 or #3)… ;) *heart*

Debbie November 14, 2012 at 2:21 PM

So we have to wait until March for Lover at Last :( How long do we have to wait until the next book in the series????? I need more!

Danielle November 19, 2012 at 8:39 PM

So, loving these books, after reading Sookie, Magverse and all of Game of Thrones…was sad, and needed a new series, your rec’s are right on target with what I adore reading! Right now “Z” is my favorite, but apparently this is because I haven’t gotten to Rhev’s yet, Lol. Oh, and what did Charlaine Harris say…Something about a book being the cheapest vacation ever? I agree!

Casey-leigh December 5, 2012 at 12:48 AM

I love love these books so totally hooked on the brotherhood I love V his my favorite gosh I can read them over and over again

Takisha December 24, 2012 at 5:32 PM

Hey Maryse! I just started this series the other day and I’m in love….the reading order you provide is it up to date (being that I’m a million years behind…lol)? And do you suggest reading the Insider’s Guide as well?

Jewels December 28, 2012 at 11:12 PM

Finally started this series 3 days ago…and just finished book #4…and probably wont rest until i am done with them all…no rest this weekend! Z is by far my favorite…

Melody January 14, 2013 at 1:18 PM

Thank you for the list in order. I was on her Website and the books listed there were confusing and I though I had missed something. For example when you click on “Lover Awakened” is takes about Thohrment, not Z. On a Different note, I am reading Lover Reborn and really looking forward to Lover at Last!!!!

Claudia January 14, 2013 at 5:45 PM

I started reading this series full steam ahead, but unfortunately life, who knew, gets in my reading way!! lol I’m reading Lover Unleashed right now. At first I thought I didn’t like Payne, but now I’m just rooting for her and Manny. Can’t wait to see how they end up together because they just have to be together!!! I am loving this book at the moment, but I think that my fav has been Rhevenge’s story. He was just so touching and so much happened in that book!!!

Takisha January 14, 2013 at 8:49 PM

I just started the series and just finished book 5, V’s book…so far he is my fav vamp!!!! Then Z, then Rhage…hehehe I am so in love with this series.

Kim January 26, 2013 at 3:39 PM

I love this series too! I am just reading them all again for the 2nd time. I was tied with Z and Rehv being my favorites until I read Father Mine the novella in the Insider’s Guide. Father Mine just made Z my favorite brother!

Amanda January 27, 2013 at 9:31 AM

I loved these books so much that I went and bought them in 1st edition hardback. I don’t know which one is my favorite between Z and V. You know they have twitter accounts and you can “talk” to them.

AmberLanae February 8, 2013 at 1:09 AM

Just read Dark Lover and can’t wait to get my hands on the rest!

Rachel February 11, 2013 at 4:46 PM

I too have fallen under the BDB spell! I first read the series a few months ago, having been told by my friend that I “HAD” to read it and I’m glad I did!! Re-read it about a month ago, it’s that good haha! Can’t wait for Lover at last to come out in March. While I wait I’ve just started the Fallen Angels series, but I feel like I’m cheating on the brotherhood haha. My fave brothers are John and V. I loved Z’s book but I got a huge soft spot for John. And I just love V’s one liners! Also the way she describes Rhage kinda makes me melt a little!!

JenJ March 13, 2013 at 1:51 PM

I randomly borrowed the first book from my library. It’s been on wish list. The ebook was available so I borrowed that. I think they sent me the notice on Friday and I was glued to the book! OMG!!! I was going to hit up my library for the rest but I don’t feel like wait. Think I’m going to get them for my Nook and then look into getting the hardcovers! Obsessed after reading only one book! Sheesh :D

Rose March 24, 2013 at 10:46 AM

I just happened on to your website and boy do I ever agree with your comentary on the books you have read. What I am shocked about and want to share with you is another favorite author of mine, Alam Katsu, the Taker Trilogy, great reads. I guess this trilogy would best fit in your paranormal catagory. I highly recommend her books. Check them out, you won’t be sorry!

Rose March 24, 2013 at 11:02 AM

Z is my favorite Brother! He’s hot, dangerous, and his quick one-liners just bowl me over….Next would be V. I just love him. However, after reading Lover Unleashed, I am waiting on the reaveal that Manny is in fact a half-breed. I have just started Lover Reborn today and hope that my question will be answered. One of the best series I have ever read.

Danielle April 8, 2013 at 5:52 PM

I really love all the BDB every time I think I have a favourite brother , I reread a book and change my mind lol
If you can’t tell already I’m slightly obsessed with this series :)

Cheryl April 19, 2013 at 3:22 AM

Just finished reading Lover at Last…loved it! So glad Qhuinn & Blay got their own story…at last, I waited forever for that one, and I love the fact that there are new characters introduced, it makes me look forward to the next one in the series. Can’t wait!!!

Sally May 2, 2013 at 7:36 AM

LOVE ♥♥ me some V, true. Ahhh, waiting to read Quinn’s book!! Thanks soooo much for the monage video!

Sarah June 4, 2013 at 12:36 AM

I’m totally obsessed with all things vampire! I love that you share your readings here for us. Kresley cole has a Scottish lycae in one of her books that I loved! My aunt turned me on to the bdb and I was hooked from book one! I’m so in love…I also really like gena showalter although sometimes I don’t find enough action in her writings. My favorite was always sherrilyn Kenyon and I have a collection of almost all of her books! The dark hunters are oober sexy too :)

Sonia June 18, 2013 at 7:48 PM

The Black Dagger brotherhood is so good! I really enjoyed it! I could not stop reading!!! This should be a movie of a tv series!! I hope there will be more black dagger brotherhood come soon

Amanda August 24, 2013 at 8:53 PM

Hey i am almost done reading The Black Dagger Brotherhood books. What is a great read after all that greatness?? Hope you can help :)

Amanda August 26, 2013 at 10:52 AM

M'Leea Collins August 29, 2013 at 5:32 AM

Have finally drowned myself in this world and now I’m at the end, am in mourning… Sigh. Need to find my new fix. Where to though from here? Just don’t want to let them go yet. Trawling Mayse’s reviews for ideas… ;)

Stephanie October 3, 2013 at 1:15 PM

Thank you so much for recommending BDB series! I read about Zsadist’s book on your “These books made me forget to eat” list and i immediately started on the first book of the series. I literally am DEVOURING THEM! Just started Zsadist’s book :) You’re the best!

Maryse October 3, 2013 at 2:30 PM

Stephanie! You are SOOOOO lucky!!!!! To read these for the first time again… *sigh* Just wait until you get to V’s book.

Stephanie October 4, 2013 at 8:13 AM

Maryse-ah so excited!!!! I try to read them slow but that is literally impossible! i’m worried i will finish them too quickly!

Cheryl October 4, 2013 at 8:32 AM

I have read the entire BDB series twice now and have to say (I read about 3 books per week) that there is no other series that can compete (although Midnight Breed and Fallen Angels are a close second).
I love your website Maryse…it’s my go-to site for book recommendations, please don’t ever stop blogging! :-)

Teri October 30, 2013 at 12:19 PM

Thanks Cheryl for mentioning Midnight Breed & Fallen Angels series. I’m having an inredibly difficult time leaving my BDB world. I’m reading them over because I just can’t seem to leave this world. Everytime I finish one I get a terrible ‘hangover’ and sometimes have to just put them down & breath a little (lol). I can hardly believe that a series of books can make one so emotional! I’ll have to give the MB & FA series a try – take on a new adventure… :-) ))

Cheryl October 30, 2013 at 2:56 PM

Hi Teri I fully understand. ..I absolutely love BDB series but really think you will enjoy Midnight Breed and the Fallen Angels series…they’re so good! Happy reading :-)

Andrea January 12, 2014 at 11:29 PM

I have terrible book depression – just finished reading the series straight through! My favorite brothers are V and Quinn – so much depth! I have these images in my mind of the compound, the warmth of the characters, etc. It’s a great series.

Cheryl January 13, 2014 at 6:03 AM

Andrea – I understand completely, as soon as I’ve finished a BDB book, I miss them already. So looking forward to the next one coming out in April! :)

sadie January 22, 2014 at 8:59 AM

I don’t seem to be able to put the BDB books down every time a new one is due to be released, I read them all again beforehand I love all of brothers but Z is my favouite by far just keep on writing books for the brotherhood please.

Cheryl January 23, 2014 at 6:57 AM

Yes Sadie, I get you. I love them all but Z, Rhev and Qhuinn are my absolute favourites..couldn’t decide between them so all three get top billing :)

Stephanie February 9, 2014 at 4:26 PM

Well I officially finished the series. What an incredible journey! I’ll admit, there were some books I absolutely loved and some I wasn’t too crazy about. Ultimately though, bravo to J.R. Ward for creating such a vast and unique world filled with characters I just loved to love. I especially could not get over Lover At Last. Quinn and Blay’s story absolutely stole my heart and brought me to tears more than once. No idea what to do with myself now that the series is over!! Any suggestions? :)

Veronica February 10, 2014 at 10:03 AM

I had just finished the Dark Hunter series by Sherrilyn Kenyon but what got me into JR Ward was that she was in a book of short stories with SK and her story’ Son of Man ‘ was simple and lovely.(I read it over 6 times!)
I have finished reading the first 4 books and my favourite so far is Zsadist. Such a troubled individual. I also loved the story between Mary and Rhage. My only gripe is the urban slang I have to go to my ipad to find out what they mean! LMFAO!

B April 1, 2014 at 3:41 PM

I’m dying to read The King but I’m wondering if I need to read Lover at Last first before I dive in. I know Wards books are sort of a continuation on the back stories and I wonder if I will miss something important to the story. Thoughts?

I’m not a reader of M/M romance because for some reason when I read I tend picture myself in it but when I read about m/m blurbs I tend to picture by brother and his partner…HA! LOL! For F/F I tend to picture my co-worker. It’s like catching your parents doing it. I know I’m weird. LOL!

Shelby April 13, 2014 at 8:34 PM

I absolutely love this series! My mother got me into it. Rhage is my absolute favorite. I want a book for iAm to come out so bad!

Cheryl April 16, 2014 at 9:23 AM

I think you should read Lover at Last, because you will miss out quite a lot with new character developments and what not…plus Qhuinn and Blay’s story is so beautiful :)

Cheryl April 16, 2014 at 9:24 AM

…and Shelby

Iam and Trez’s story is next! :)

Lynn April 29, 2014 at 11:59 AM

I have about 100 pages left on the King and I’m bumming because I don’t know when the next book is coming out! I’m addicted to this series. Do you know how long I’ll have to wait for a new book? What else do you recommend to me for reading that are similar to these stories?

Veronica April 29, 2014 at 2:24 PM

Have you heard of Christine Feehan? Her books are similar to JR Ward. Sexy vampires , strong women, enemies to fight………

fdzai April 30, 2014 at 4:13 AM

she should honestly consider a series, I bet it will be way better that vampire diaries and twilight. am so addicted to this series.

Shontel May 25, 2014 at 12:45 AM

Another series you might like is Tina Folsom – Scanguard Series. It fall in line with the BDB but it’s a little shorter. I love this series as well. I read them in between BDB and it really ties me over til the next one. But my next problem is am dying till the next Scanguard. Happy Reading Everyone!!

MizVal1955 May 28, 2014 at 7:48 PM

Late to the party but I’m here . I could a series of books I can fall in love with. What I can not understand why has this not made it to the silver screen or at least mini series on HBO. I’d be pinned to the screen every night it was or at best first in line opening night at the movie. If she needs JD Ward needs casting suggestions I have a few . BTW had JD Ward ever done any book signings or interviews ?

Fran Wright June 13, 2014 at 4:41 PM

BDB are by far my favorite series. After King I was ready to read the next one, but of course it’s not out yet. They are an addiction. When the next one comes out I will read them all again. Definitely a fun bunch.

Kim July 22, 2014 at 3:28 PM

Will there be another book in the BDB series??

gabi August 28, 2014 at 3:47 PM

So you have to read the books exactly in the order you have posted up?

cheryl August 29, 2014 at 7:15 PM

Yes kim there is another coming out in April 3015, “The Shadows”

cheryl August 29, 2014 at 7:17 PM

Sorry that was a typo. I meant April 2015*

paula September 25, 2014 at 10:51 PM

I really hope we here more of the King and his family. ? Looking forward to the shadows. After reading the King I can see a few avenues that are left open – hope you write about them.

Josipa November 2, 2014 at 2:31 PM

I really want to know something about Rhage and Mary. I really want them to have a baby and can’t wait for a new book..

Sherry November 28, 2014 at 12:41 PM

Thank you for all the wonderful comments about the series, I love them so much. I love that you all share other titles and authors. I wasn’t sure what books that I could read and now I have a few more authors to find. I have read the serious by PC Cast and her daughter called House of Night, but I do want more books more like BDBH. HON is good for fun reading not as intense more for a younger crowd but nice to just relax too.

kelly lingard January 23, 2015 at 3:58 AM

wow I’ve had this series in my read pile for years, I can’t believe i’ve waited so long to read them. I’ve read all 12 book( to date ) in 4 weeks now I’m addicteed and eagerly awaiting the next installment.
I highly recommend them and have bought the 3 for my best friend

Glowie June 20, 2015 at 11:17 PM

Sherry June 22, 2015 at 11:12 AM

Holy Man! I need to read the rest of these books! I have read Dark Lover and now need to read the rest. I am in serious need of my BDB Fix. My husband won’t see me for a few days he put all the available books onto my kindle.

I love the Dark Hunter Series and also the Belador Series.

Cathleen August 17, 2015 at 11:51 PM

Thank you for creating suck a great world! BDB is my escape from reality. I don’t know what I would do with out it! Thank you for sharing your wonderful talent with the world! You Rock!!!

Teresa Burns December 5, 2015 at 12:05 PM

Yvonne Belland February 16, 2016 at 4:27 AM

We loved this series of the Black Brotherhood

Lover Mine
lover Unleased
Lover Unleashed
Lover Reborn
Lover at Last
The King
The Shadows
Blood Kiss released Dec 2015
The Beast is scheduled for release April 2016
i loved these stories and have turned on other readers. Its been about 9 year’s so since I read all six, so I am giing to read them again then go from there to the newer ones. Appreciated your readers sharing other book series to also read . Keep writing, was wondering where your idea came from for the series?

Cheryl February 16, 2016 at 10:18 AM

The last 7 books you mentioned are all full length stories…and we’re a fantastic read! :-)

Kelly March 7, 2016 at 10:38 PM

Which book actually had the birth of Wrath’s son? I remember her finding out she was pregnant but not the pregnancy or birth. Did I skip one?

Cheryl March 8, 2016 at 3:42 AM

It’s in The King. You probably don’t remember because it all felt a bit rushed. The birth was just kind of an add on. And not much detail on the actual birth

Marilyn Snow April 18, 2016 at 9:16 PM

I love these books! I can not express how much I enjoy reading this series! Thank you J.R. Ward!!

Tracie April 10, 2017 at 1:00 PM

I am reading the black dagger brotherhood series. I also see that J R ward has other series that kind of go along with the brotherhood. In what order would you read all the books from all the series that she has. I feel like I am missing so things that I should know. Hope my question makes sense.

Maryse April 14, 2017 at 10:15 AM

Hi Tracie!!!

This list has them all, exactly in the order they should be read (and have been released). I hope that helps!

Brenda June 2, 2017 at 8:36 PM

The best books I’ve read in a very long time. My friend told me about the Black Dagger Brotherhood books by J.R.Ward and said ” Just read the first one and you’ll be hooked!” And I did. And I can’t stop reading them. Fantastic Books!

~Ruby~ August 23, 2017 at 3:30 AM

Glad tidings to all!
I just joined Maryse’s site and look forward to posting something useful in the near future.
At this time, my interest lay in obtaining “Blood Vow”, “Blood Kiss” and “The Chosen”, all of which are simply part of THE BEST vamp series EVER written, The Black Dagger Brotherhood! I have been obsessed with these guys (AND their women!) since the very first book and as long as JR keeps it going, I will continue reading them!
Her descriptions of the men are nothing short of divine and somehow, I fall in love with each of them.
Since no other vamp series compares, I don’t bother buying them but if anyone is interested in creating a “book swap”, I have lots of other books some of you may find interesting.
Oh, and I read the first installment of The Bourbon Kings and I quite liked it although, I must admit it was a hard start. Once all the players sat down to the table, I am looking forward to the next installment.
Anyhoo, that’s all I’ve got for now but hope to speak to some of you soon!
Ciao for now,

Maryse August 23, 2017 at 8:05 AM

Welcome, Ruby!!! So glad to share our BDB addiction with you. ;)

gshewgill March 11, 2018 at 4:46 PM

I heard there is a BDB novella or short story coming out March 13th called Dearest Ivie. And we have to wait an extra week for The Thief until April 10th. However JR has Chapter One on her newsletter as an appetizer.

Maryse March 12, 2018 at 11:46 AM

Dearest Ivie sounds awesome!!!!

Brenda Grimbeek March 24, 2018 at 9:40 AM

I absolutely Love All books by J. R. Ward. She is an amazing story teller. The characters and that actually stories are great. Once I start one of her books it’s soooo difficult to put it down. Thanks Maryse for your wonderful insightful help in regards to the books we all love.

Maryse March 24, 2018 at 4:04 PM

Thank YOU Brenda, for letting us know you love this series and also for your awesome comment. You’ve made my day!! :D

JB LIPP March 27, 2018 at 12:32 PM

Though not about Vampires, the 3 different series by Shelly Laurenston are fantastic. Dragons, shapeshifters and Norse Gods living in modern day America. Hot, hilarious and riveting characters.

JB LIPP March 27, 2018 at 12:33 PM

Jessica Yoder-Jones April 9, 2018 at 7:13 PM

When should we read Dearest Ivie? Thanks for this list!!!

Angie F April 20, 2018 at 9:41 PM

I have been waiting for what seems like FOREVER , to finally read Sola and Assails story!! I just finished the “Thief”, and am once again in awe of the Wardens story telling! There is so much happening here, yet is so easy to follow.
V and Jane, and their OMG going on, almost had my heart stopped! Oh and HOLY SMOKES, is there a traitor in their midst? Sola and Assail are so perfect together, and her Vovo may be old, but she is one little ball of fire, that you can’t help but love as your own grandmother! I love this book, and I’m in love with every single book in this series, and love every single brother, and their big giant family!
If you haven’t read this series, you are missing a reading relationship worth having.

Sonica October 30, 2018 at 2:10 AM

I love love love the BDB books! I just discovered it this year and I am totally hooked!! Wish she could make a tv series on them, it would be awesome and better than any of the vampire movies kr series out there!!

Teri October 30, 2018 at 10:58 AM

Oh, Sonica- YAH! I remember when I stumbled upon BDB books… I power read every single one. Then started over! Wouldn’t a TV series be awesome! I’d watch :-)

Donna Brown December 28, 2018 at 11:34 AM

This is one my favorites series! I’ve already preordered “The Savior” and I’ve come across another new book set in the BDB world, called “Prisonor of Night” that’s due out January but isn’t showing up on JR Ward’s webpage which is odd….have you heard of it yet? I found it listed on Amazon.

Maryse December 28, 2018 at 2:50 PM

Hi Donna!!

I just found it and included it in the reading order guide above (all linked up so you can order it).

I hope this helps!!

Donna Brown December 28, 2018 at 3:34 PM

Thanks! I’ve preordered….it comes out January 7, 2019…..

Janet January 2, 2019 at 9:22 PM

My best friend had been telling me about the BDB books for a long time and told me I should read them and that they were better than the Midnight Breed Series that we had started reading several years ago. I finally ordered the first BDB book on Oct. 18, 2018 and started reading it and I was totally hooked! I am now on The Thief Book 16 and have just preordered Prisoner of Night. My best friend is still on Book 4 as of last week so she has alot of catching up to do! I hope that the series continues on after The Savior. Not ready for it to end yet!

Angie F. January 2, 2019 at 10:38 PM

Janet, so glad you joined the dark side with us! The BDB Series is my absolute favorite series! I have read, and reread them all!
When you finish this series, other favorite series is the, and has a BDB feel, alfa males, and strong women, is the “Dark Series” by Christine Feehan. I’ve read and reread every book on this series as well! Must MUST read!

Maryse January 3, 2019 at 10:09 AM

Oh to re-experience the BDB for the first time… what an amazing marathon-read that was for me. I NEVER wanted to leave their world. :D
