Book Review – Low by Mary Elizabeth

By 20 Comments

Low

*claps claps and claps some more!!!!!!!!* 😀 😀 😀 BRAVO Mary Elizabeth. BRAVO!!!!!!!!!!!!  It’s no wonder you’re so popular!! You are an exciting author!! This was the first book I have read by you, and you have taken me on the most exhilarating thrill-rides that I have been on in… shooooooooot…. I dunno. Months? A year? Years?

This was one of most captivating, engrossing, thrilling, unputdownable reads that I’ve read in a LONG time! I found myself rocking back and forth (<— seriously… I should have recorded it, but that would have been hard… I need a tripod). I had so much energy that needed a release so all I could do was rock back and forth as the whole thing culminated into that fantastic ending. I was cheering, tears welling up in my eyes, and loving every single moment of LOVING THE BAD GUYS!!!!!!

But… are they really bad guys? Maybe. Maybe not. Absolutely YES. And maybe… not so much. 😉 I guess it depends on which side of the law (or of this sweet, crazy love story) you’re on.

Circumstantial bad guys, but with hearts of gold. With some serious bad luck at times (sad 🙁 ), but great luck too. Moments in life with no way out, no way up, and too far gone. The whole…  “I have nothing left to lose so let’s go balls to the wall!” This was THAT RIDE.

Maryse: I’m in K-N-O-T-S!!!! I’m reading an ARC of Low. *whooo* I wanted something thrilling, and I got it. Hooked me right from the start. YAY ME!!
Okay so… they’re practically starving & trying to make a go at life together but his prison record makes it hard to get a job, and she’s trying to keep up her college course and HER jobs… so what they end up doing has my stomach in KNOTS right now. KNOTS.

Dani Hart I read it last week —-> In love! But Mary Elizabeth never disappoints! Oh, and just wait for the last scene. #chills

Maryse: I LOVE chills!!!

E.k. Blair: Maryse LOW is amazing! OMG! Loved it!  I couldn’t stop! It was a wild ride! So happy you’re reading and enjoying!

Maryse: I AM SO INTO THIS!!! 🙂

Sadie: I preordered this! Dusty was a wild ride too.

Maryse: This is the first book I’ve read by this author… she’s good. DAMN GOOD.

Maryse: 97 %… other than stopping to eat and bathroom breaks, I have been reading non-stop. SO GOOD. I’m scared!!!!! LOL!!! I’m seriously rocking back and forth

Maryse: *claps*!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! YES YES YES!!!!!!! PERFECT! 5 STARS!!!! *sigh* Sooooooo happy. 😀 It’s funny the things that make me happy… 😉

Dani Hart: There was Bonnie & Clyde. And then Low & Poesy

Maryse: Better than Bonnie & Clyde. I LOVED these guys. I didn’t like Bonnie & Clyde so much.

Dani Hart: Ok scrap Bonnie & Clyde . The last scene though…seriously #MakeThatSh$tFly

Maryse: I’m in tears, I’m smiling, I’m exhilarated, I’ve been through hell and back again and this one ROCKED. MY. WORLD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I love it so much, I have SO much energy over this, that I need to expel it in a review IMMEDIATELY.

So what’s it about?

Low and Poe (tee hee!!! I just realized that… really he’s Lowen and she’s Poesy) have been dating for a long time. “New adults” in love. Sweet sweetness. She’s from a fairly well-to-do family that basically ignores yet controls her, and he’s from a very poor family (his mother and sister, with his father in prison for life), and Low has been in and out of trouble…

My crimes have never been victimless, but as a kid from the hood, when welfare wasn’t enough, I did what I had to do to help my family get by.

but Low and Poe simply can’t live without the other. Unconditional love.

And when he’s caught stealing bread and peanut butter from a store (he and his family are basically starving),

“I called the cops,” he interrupts, shaking out the rest of me. The loaf of bread I want so badly joins the peanut butter at my feet.

“You don’t have to do that,” I say, jerking back and forth as the brazen store clerk pats me down. “I’m sorry. I was hungry, but I’ll pay you double when I get some cash.”

“No,” he says loudly. He shows me the grimy phone. “The police are on their way.”

…he hits the store owner to get away, does some serious damage in the process and ends up with a prison sentence. Once released on good behavior, his sweet good girl Poe has waited for him, having built a tiny nest egg as she went to college and worked to earn enough money so they can truly start their lives together.

But of course, Low realizes that his face tattoo, and criminal record make getting decent work a difficulty. He tries. Oh how he tries. And as the nest egg dwindles, and he re-discovers the feeling of starving all over gain (this time, with the love of his life), he decided to do something drastic. AND I MEAN DRASTIC!!!! AND SO BAD.

She deserves more than a mattress on the floor and roaches in the cabinets.

I tried to live the right way, but with a record like mine, I’m fated to live a life of crime and poverty.

Once a felon, always a felon.

From that moment on, their life changes. But what I loved? Is that it changed SLOWLY at first. We get to know them throughout their metamorphosis.

I’m generally not much of a “Bonnie and Clyde” lover, you see. I’ve never been all that interested in reading the “bad girl” in a story (or in a movie) or in real life. The bad guy yes… with a GOOD girl. I dunno. It’s just my thing. I was intrigued by the “bad guy” prison boyfriend aspect. I find the social-study of love between a bad guy and a good girl stimulating. The dynamic and attempt at a secure life, amongst insecure footing, makes for a thought provoking and engrossing love story. But this was on a whole other level.

Us vs. Them. Right vs. Wrong. Good vs. Evil.

And I am definitely the devil.

And this story allowed us PLENTY of that. A slow build into quite the transition and race for their lives that had my heart racing along with them!

Sure, I will admit at a few certain moments on this thrill-ride, I scoffed at the mistakes they made. I scoffed at *some* of the crazy things they got away with. Lipgloss Poe? Really? REAAAAALLLLY? Eh… what did it matter anyway, you didn’t even do as you were told, now did you?

My partner in crime isn’t as cautious.

But I get ya! Well… for some things. 😉

In fact, she shocked me. A good girl, but when she throws caution to the wind, she’s hardcore, kind of flighty, with a wild streak of troublemaker.

And then everything went to hell, but OH MY GOD I loved the crazy journey.

At times, I just had to “go with it”, but trust me, even if you scoff here and there, the book as a whole will have you forgetting any of those complaints.

Such good kids (good people, in essence) and yet, such menaces! GREAT, impelling, addictive, HOT MESS of characters. The gradual change of their “characters” (but not necessarily their hearts!!) was fascinating. A new way of life, one of crime, on the run, with no concrete plans, but just trying to keep going day by day to their eventual dream, I could barely tear myself away.

“You stupid girl,” I say, wishing I could hide her inside me. If there was a way I could split myself in half and veil Poe behind my heart, caged by rib bones and meat, I’d do it without question. Even if it meant death.

Dead and together would be mercy compared to alive and jailed apart.

GAH!!!!!! THEY ARE SO INTENSE!!!!!

Rooting for the bad guys (the villains?) and their love story, is just so much fun. 😀

5 STARS!!!!!

P.S. Thank you to the author for sending me this review copy. When I said I needed a thrill for my next read, this one sure delivered!

Book Review – The Baller by Vi Keeland

By 2 Comments

The Baller: A Down and Dirty Football Novel
Another fun read by author Vi Keeland, and I just realized I’m starting to rack up a nice little review repertoire of her books. I’m noticing that she’s one of my favorites and it’s so easy to see why. In fact, this book was #1 in ALL of Kindle books on Amazon, and made the NYT Best Seller’s list and the USA TODAY Best Sellers list. That’s not for nothing. 😉

Great writing, absorbing personal (and relatable) stories and characters.  Best of all, the smooth flow of her stories, that have that authentic feel. Nothing rushed, nothing too eye-rolling, and yet still that *oomph* that keeps the reader both comfortable and on the edge of her emotional seat! Believable, realistic (and often hilarious) dialogue, and she’s got her “bad boys” down to a T.

Doesn’t matter if they’re sports stars or rock stars, they are genuinely sweet, endearing and cocky. A little selfish and a lot selfless. Gorgeous and self assured, yet, when it comes to that special someone… a little bit of insecurity and jealousy can’t help but show it’s face. But no matter what, her heroes are so easy to get attached to, and Brody was no exception.

Fabi:  I haven’t stopped laughing for a single minute. I’m talking about can’t help myself embarrassing laugh out out while everyone is sleeping laughs.

Michelle:  I’m totally enjoying The Baller – HOT and fun, just what I needed right now :D

He had me blushing and grinning with glee at some of the stuff that came out of his mouth (and other things) *snort*. Mind you… a few of in our crew wanted extra… connection (or should I say hotter steam) *grins* and some found it plenty warm in there. 😉

Kristina: Baller literally had me hot…my face turned red and i kept thinking it’s just hot in here! Nope the writing really made you feel. You ladies are always right! Now I just keep looking for some athletes! Lol.

Sharon: I am a reading The Baller and like it. Did you see the cover? Ok . . . Stop what you are doing and look at the cover. Closely. Do you see what I see? Yep, I see a lot of Brody. But you know what? It’s just not living up to the cover. It’s not nearly descriptive enough for me. Its just not wowing me like I want it to. I mean, I want to know how they feel when they are intimate. It just doesn’t do it. I will finish it and I am sure I would recommend it. But something is missing. I blame those darn hockey players. And you cannot start a book with dropping a towel, later to describe subway and not confirm. Dirty rant over.

eekeekeek Oh. I didn’t… notice… that. lol Tee hee!!!!

Anne: I agree about The Baller. The intimate times between the H/h needed more description not because I like smut but because I needed to see their connection during those times. But I still loved this book and Brody.

So I thought I’d include a bit from both perspectives… might help you gauge the “sexy-time” levels. Some of us found it super-hot… and some of us wanted more.

BUT!!!!!

His reactions. He may have just been my favorite of her men, yet. *swooooooon* and *snort* 😛

So what’s it about?

Sports reporter Delilah is obliged to enter the locker rooms after big games and of course… interview the towel-clad sports stars. This will be her first time… and while she’s nervous, she’s determined to her own amongst the male-dominated industry.

Even though I’d worked eighty hours a week the last few years to get where I was, the men who worked thirty were the first ones to blame my success on my magical vagina. Screw them.

Of course, having to interview the cockiest of all cockies <— (tee hee! Oh yes… I went there 😛 ), and knowing that he’s had his skirmishes with female reporters in the past, she’s not entirely surprised when he drops his towel mid interview with a smirk.

Well… oh she’s *surprised* ’cause OMG what the heck is THAT?!! And… she kind of loses it, live on air (and yes… it phases her), to his delight,

“It’s your first trip into the locker room, isn’t it? Do you like what you see so far?” His lips curled up into a full-blown wicked smile.

Before I could catch myself, my eyes dropped to his naked lower half. Sh*t. He was dangling in the wind. I totally got distracted by just how low the thing dangled. Subway. The nickname was damn well suited. It was probably a full minute before I responded to his question. A full minute of dead air time. Great.

…but there’s something about their interaction that has him wanting to know more. And while he unabashedly pursues this new reporter, and she insists on not going there, especially with a guy like him… it’s hard to resist his charm.

“You have a funny way of showing that you like me. Every time I see you, you try to sabotage my interview.”

“Every time I see you, I expose myself to you.” He flashed me his trademark smile. “That’s how we show girls we like them where I’m from.”

“Where are you from, the jungle?”

“Brooklyn.”

LOL!!!!!!

No seriously… yes you’ve read this kind of cocky character before, but trust me, there is SO much more to him then his public persona, and as we go with him behind the sport star scene to the things that matter most to him, you will adore him.

“So this is it? This is my courtship? A dinner, which you basically made me come to in order to get an interview for my job, and now I’m supposed to have sex with you?”

“By the tone of your voice, I guess I shouldn’t answer yes to that question?”

The waitress returned before I could respond. “Would you like dessert?”

Brody pointed to the menu. “Bring us one of everything, please.”

She justifiably looked confused. “You want one of every dessert?”

He looked at me. “That’s right. She needs more courtship. Bring us one of everything.”

I couldn’t help but laugh.

“See,” he said when Siselee had gone. “I’m entertaining, too. I’m making you laugh. And you think I’m hot. This is a great courtship. I don’t know what you’re talking about.”

And she ends up adoring him, too.

I was totally falling for him. There was no way to stop it at this point. I just had to hope that when this fall was over, Brody was there to catch me.

And just like I love in my romance books, this one brings it. There is that touch of angst (just enough to have you heart breaking and racing, simultaneously). Definitely an OH OH moment or three (yep!)…

Michelle: 50% in The Baller and uh oh, didn’t expect that ‘addition’ to the story

…that will have you biting your lip for them.

Fabi: Fabi: Baller, 77%, end of Chapter 32. *minor/major freakout* What is wrong with you people? I am bawling my eyes out. I have a 3pm meeting and no makeup left on my face, a bright Rudolph nose, and an ache in my chest. I may have to come after every one of who said there was no angst in this book. *freakout done* I still love y’all. You’re just a whole lot tougher than I am.

Lisa: You are getting to the twisty bit *waggles eyebrows*. And I want to know what you think.

Fabi: I just finished Baller. Vi Keeland wrote the perfect book boyfriend.  :-) …I thought both characters were pretty perfect too. It wasn’t a light read for me, but had just enough emotional upheaval for a CR to make my tummy twist and turn.

Michelle: The Baller was fun, sweet and sexy but yeah not much angst just some emotional parts. I really enjoyed it – Brody was perfect! I enjoyed The Baller Fabi but yeah my angst meter is getting pretty high. I barely teared up *shrugs*

Lisa: enjoyed the book and finished it quickly but it doesn’t replace Beat or Throb for me.

Of course, I can take my angst, angstier (much angstier, in fact) but this one gave me a good jolt, nonetheless, and quite a few in our crew felt it, BIG TIME!!

Jacee: My favorites were The Score and Baller. There’s something about confident, hot alpha males.

Stacy P: I started this week reading The Baller and I can’t recommend it enough. It’s was amazing

Cheryl: overall I loved it and the “feels” I got from reading it.

Over all, an easy, lighthearted, fun, and super-steamy read, that had enough emotional depth, and a few powerful moments to keep me entrenched… and entertained.

4 stars!

P.S. Thank you to the author for sending me a review copy!!

But she will soon learn to be careful what to wish for when she’s taken against her will and thrust into the twisted world of a powerful man who doesn’t care if she lives or dies.”
  10. Black by T.L Smith <— HE HAS A BLACK HEART ALERT! “She was broken and I was glad she was broken. She wouldn’t think less of me and my damaged ways.”
  11. Pointe Of Darkness (LA Dark Series Book 1) by Paris Andren <— A BALLERINA CAUGHT IN A NIGHTMARE & A DETECTIVE INVESTIGATING A DANGEROUS SEX CLUB ALERT! “Her future in ballet looks bright–until a night out celebrating irrevocably changes her. FIVE-STAR READER RECOMMENDATIONS (and bargain finds!) :D (NOTE: bargain priced when I added them, but prices can change on Amazon, so make sure to check before you finalize your order).

  1. Jezebel by K. Larsen <— FIVE STAR GUT-TWISTER!!! It made my best of 2015 list, and it’s super-bargain priced right now!!! READ IT. It blew my mind!! Jezebel by K. Larsen ➜ My review AND!!! This book is a standalone but has TWO “extras” for those that desperately need more, so here’s the series reading order.
  2. THERAPY by Kathryn Perez<— Freebie of the week!!! And one of my BFF’s absolute favorite books!
  3. Clear by Jessica Park <— ONE OF MY FAVORITE AUTHORS ALERT! and one of her books is on super-sale today!! Seriously… it’s a standalone and sounds INTENSE! College student starting over and reconnecting with someone from her past: “Stella is determined to heal them both. Healing, however, is a challenge when the walls of her everyday existence collapse. And when Sam’s best friend is his worst enemy. When the line between life and death blurs.” ON SUPERSALE today (it’s a Kindle Daily Countdown deal).
  4. Heated Ride: Hellions Motorcycle Club (The Hellions Ride Series Book 7) by Chelsea Camaron <— BIKER BOOK ALERT! Vicki loved this one! “I don’t know if you are interested in a book that I recently read that I really loved. But will throw it out there in case. I just read Heated Ride by Chelsea Camaron and loved it. It is a story of a married couple who lose their passion. Although Ms. Camaron usually writes MC romances, this one has MC characters, but it is really more about a marriage and coming to their HEA in their marriage.”
  5. Night Owl (The Night Owl Trilogy Book 1) by M. Pierce <— ANOTHER ONE OF MY ALL-TIME FAVORITES is on sale today! And this is where “Manny the stuffed manatee” comes from (the one our reading crew virtually “shares” when we need to cry while reading a book – he’s been snuffled on a few too many times. His nap needs a good brushing). LOL!!!! Anyway… it’s about a moody, brooding author, and the “anonymous” woman he’s writing a book with. SO SO SOOOOOOOO GOOD!!! READ THIS!
  6. Commodity by Shay Savage <— SHAY SAVAGE ALERT – WOMEN ARE NOW A FORM OF CURRENCY!! *GASP*! Nancy found this one on super-sale today (Kindle Countdown deal!!) She says: “…this was one of my favorites of 2015.” Yep… sounds like my kind of read! “The beginning of a new form of currency. Women are now the highest COMMODITY.”
  7. Fighting Silence (On The Ropes Book 1) by Aly Martinez <— DEAF MMA FIGHTER ALERT! Nancy also found out these are on sale ’cause book #3 will be out in just a few days!! 😀 She says: “I love Aly Martinez’s books, and the first 2 books in her On the Ropes series are both on sale… and the third is coming out Tuesday. these are a series of interconnected stanalones.“
  8. Fighting Shadows (On The Ropes Book 2) by Aly Martinez <— and this one, too!
  9. Preschooled by Anna Lefler <— ADULTS WITH CHILDREN IN THE SAME CLASS... and their issues! On super-sale today and sounds like so much fun!! “Behind the toddler-proof gate of Santa Monica’s exclusive Garden of Happiness, it’s the grown-ups who are getting schooled…”
  10. Beautifully Toxic (Toxic Love Series Book 1) by L.M. Roberts <— Lauren enjoyed this recent release! “Beautifully Toxic (Toxic Love Series Book 1) was unexpectedly hilarious.”
  11. For those of you that missed it ➜ Maryse’s 2015 Top Ten Favorite Books List!! AND!! 2015 Reader Favorites (<— new ones added weekly!!)
  12. And for AUDIOBOOK L:PVERS
    1. For those going on a road trip soon, or maybe you’ve got some projects that require both hands this weekend but still allows you to “listen”… check out the free audible trial + 2 free ebooks deal —>
    2. AND! Here’s the fun-tool again! —>Find out which of YOUR Kindle books are available as AUDIOBOOKS AT AN AH-MAZING PRICE!<—Audiobooks for ebook super-sale prices. I’m thrilled with that, and what’s fun is you can flip flop from reading it, to listening to it without losing your spot… This thing is so cool (Amazon calls it “Matchmaker“)! It’s an Amazon feature, that scans your Kindle books and will list all of the ones you have that are also available as an audiobook at a discounted price (not normal audiobook prices). This way, you can switch back and forth, seamlessly between your ebooks and your audiobooks. VERY COOL! (This is the “Whispersync” thingie).
    3. Naked in Death: In Death, Book 1 by J.D. Robb <— CHUCK has a few recommendations for us audio-book listeners! He says: “Just want to chime in with a male perspective. I love this series and have collected audio versions (CD) thru “Concealed in Death: In Death Series, Book 38” and will soon be adding the rest. I got hooked listening to one mid series (Fantasy in Death: In Death, Book 30) and started purchasing the whole series to be able to work from #1 (Naked in Death) thru… whatever. Have listened to the first 45 once and working through a second time (it takes a while). If you are just getting started at collecting, do remember that most sources list them in a “Romance” category rather than “Crime/Detective Fiction. For those of us preferring or needing audio book, Susan Ericksen is a fantastic reader – actually, performer – who brings the character alive, right down to the most minor or incidental ones.“”
