Cara McKenna – Desert Dogs Series Reading Order

By 3 Comments

BIKER SERIES ALERT and by one of our very favorite authors. I even dedicated an entire “book-list” to her alone, she’s just so darn awesome!! I’m a total McKenna-addict! And! This series has a release coming out in just a few days. :D!!!

Virginia: I just finished LAY IT DOWN (Desert Dogs #1) by Cara McKenna yesterday and am still sparking on Vince Grossier.

Georgia: Cara Mckenna – is flawless. I’m excited to read the 2nd book in her biker series. Duncan seemed quite interesting in Book 1.

MichelleS: Cara McKenna’s new one? wha wha wha what? I LOVE her writing – now I have to go and see what that’s all about!

MichelleF:  I’m reading Cara McKenna’s new one, Lay It Down, and loving it so far at almost 50% in.

About book #1:

That’s a life well lived, according to the Desert Dogs—four friends who call Fortuity, Nevada, their badlands home.

Vince Grossier is the self-crowned outlaw king around here. But when Fortuity’s slick new mayor invites a shady casino development to town, the invaders’ cutthroat takeover tactics quickly turn deadly. With police turning a suspiciously blind eye, it’s up to the locals to fight back, and Vince is on the front line. The pretty photographer hired by the developers might be the key to infiltrating the enemy. And a temptation too good to pass up.

Finally free of a controlling ex, Kim Paget’s not looking to be taken for a ride—not on the back of some tattooed roughneck’s bike and definitely not in his bed. But when she finds evidence that her bosses are rattlesnake-dangerous, Kim must entrust her safety to the man who threatens danger of a whole different kind.

Book Review – Center Mass by Lani Lynn Vale

By 3 Comments

Center Mass (Code 11- KPD SWAT)
I was SO in the mood for a cop-in-uniform book but I didn’t want to “be the cop” you know? I didn’t feel like reading a book where we followed the detective around and tried to solve a crime (not that those aren’t great reads in their own right) but I wanted romance and I wanted to be the girl.

I just wanted to be the girl crushing on the cop. And I wanted him to be a cop in uniform. Regular police uniform, or full SWAT regalia. That was fine with me, as long as I got to be “her” for a bit, crushing on the bigger-than-life (oh and this one totally is!!) hero.

And I’d been hearing how awesome Lani’s books are (even hearing along the lines of a KA feel), but had never sampled her heroes yet. 😉 Heroes, but with a side of sexy bad-boy, nonetheless. Like this one. Hulking in massive size and persona, leader of his crew (just under the chief-of-police), and much-feared and revered. And yet a total teddy-bear to his tiny daughter. Oh did I forget to mention he’s a single father? 😉

A typical male in all respects. Leaves his stuff lying everywhere, has too many socks ’cause he doesn’t like washing them, and no-nonsense in every respect. Even his poor (albeit much-loved) adorable daughter didn’t have a frill or bow, or sugary-treat to her name.

I know that it’s not healthy, but come on, a child has to live!

“I’m not saying that she’s never been exposed to it. I’m saying that she’s never eaten it. She doesn’t know what she’s missing,” he clarified.

I snorted. The man was a cop for god’s sake! He couldn’t be that naïve.

‘Cause you know. Men. neutral They don’t get it.

And Reese is a nurse, has her own young daughter and is having to deal with her miserable ex that left her hanging to deal with their child on her own. And how do sexy-cop Luke and Reese meet? When she ends up having to treat his daughter in school. He comes roaring in, steals his tiny daughter away to make sure she’s okay, but can’t get sexy nurse Reese (and her speeding away in HOT-ROD car in FRONT OF A COP) off his mind. 😉

“She’s breaking about eighteen laws right now,” I said to Downy, tucking the card back into my pocket.

“Yeah, but she’s f**king hot doing it. I’d let her off with a warning,” Downy grinned before walking to his cruiser and pulling out of the parking lot.

“Me too,” I murmured to no one.

Sexy cop… sexy nurse. Lotsa fun! LOL!

Except as in all cop stories, there are some bad guys. So while we DO get to fawn over the sexy cop (and giggle over some of his calls),

I’d been at the stoplight in my SUV cruiser at Stone Road and 259 when I’d looked down at the car next to me. What I’d gotten was an eyeful of ball sack.

Pinching the bridge of my nose, I waited for the light to turn green, then immediately pulled him over.

The man had been pleasant at first, but I figured the man had to have some sort of short term memory loss, because the next thing I knew, he was running down the street naked.

Which had caught the attention of Downy in a police cruiser of his own.

Now, I knew exactly what was going to happen the moment I realized who it was that was pulling up. Did he help? No. Did he watch and laugh? Yes, his ass off.

But!!! There is someone out to hurt Reese, and Luke finds himself in the middle of it. In all respects, considering he’s a cop, and he really likes her.

Good stuff!

Was I able to put it down? Well… yes. I enjoyed it overall (even though I found its “start” to be a slightly bumpy ride, reading/writing wise. I liked… but I wondered if I could connect? But eventually I got used to the writing style, or maybe it found its own rhythm and I was in! There was some angst (his gorgeous ex is still mooning over him and kept showing up.. in fact there was an “OH NO HE DIDN’T!!” evil moment that I just loved to hate).

“I just wanted you to know that I would love to have you there, but it’d be better if you weren’t,” he said slowly.

And of course there are some questions in regards to Reese’s ex. And his new girl. And well… I’ll let y’all uncover the rest. It does get crazy… a little far-fetched even (once everything is revealed I was all… whaaaaaa?? confused Cool… but whaaaaaaaa? For REALS?), but whatever. It’s a cop book. There has to be crazies! And it has to get crazy, right?

LOL!!!

But what did it for me is I got to be her, I didn’t have to solve crimes, and I got to stare at a hottie cop in his bad-assedness. Good enough for me! Did it have the KA feel? Why yes… not as intense, mind you. But I saw it. Felt it. It did. Not my 5-star KA love, but if you’re looking for more like that, I’d definitely say this for a fun afternoon read. 😀 Will I read more? You bet!

3.75 stars!

P.S. I LOVED THE EPILOGUE!!!!!! Amazing and SO real and sooooooooo sweet and weird and perfect. The letters. *sigh* and *grrrrrrrrrr!!!*

P.P.S. I have to admire the cover, somewhat, because… come on, right? *waggles eyebrows* But then again, do cops really go around pulling up their shirt halfway like that looking all moody-like? *snort* TEE HEEEEEE!! Oh come on. It’s funny!!!! 😛 And to be honest? There’s no way bad-ass cop Luke would DARE be er… *blink blink* enough to do this. Yet… I stare.

Jasinda Wilder – Alpha Series Reading Order

By 1 Comment

This series sounds SO AWESOME. I mean… she gets anonymous checks in the mail with one-word notes, but she’s broke, she needs the money and so she cashes them. And then… “It turns out $120,000 doesn’t come free.” <— *gasp*!!!!! And these fellow readers *gasped* too! Oh and guess what!?? Book #3 is NOW up for pre-order (I posted it below)!

Marit: Oh my GOD! I’m reading Alpha by Jasinda Wilder now;) Hot and mysterious alphamale with a big secret. The book is HOT 🙂

Lauren: Alpha by Jasinda Wilder is on sale right now. It’s the one where the girl gets $10,000 checks in the mail every month with YOU written in the notes line. Then, after a year, a guy shows up in a limo & say, “it’s time to pay your debt”.

Yashira: I just finished Alpha by jasinda wilder… Maryse just be prepared to jump in to a cold shower because the scenes in alpha were HOT!!

About book #1:

The first time it happened, it seemed like an impossible miracle. Bills were piling up, adding up to more money than I could ever make. Mom’s hospital bills. My baby brother’s tuition. My tuition. Rent. Electricity. All of it on my shoulders. And I had just lost my job. There was no hope, no money in my account, no work to be found. And then, just when I thought all hope was lost, I found an envelope in the mail. No return address. My name on the front, my address. Inside was a check, made out to me, in the amount of ten thousand dollars. Enough to pay the bills and leave me some left over to live on until I found a job. Enough to let me focus on classes. There was no name on the check, just “VRI Inc.,” and a post office box address for somewhere in the city. No hint of identity or reason for the check or anything. No mention of repayment, interest, nothing…except a single word, on the notes line: “You.” Just those three letters.

If you receive a mysterious check, for enough money to erase all your worries, would you cash it?

I did.

The next month, I received another check, again from VRI Incorporated. It too contained a single word: “belong.”

A third check, the next month. This time, two words. Four letters. “To me.”

The checks kept coming. The notes stopped. Ten thousand dollars, every month. A girl gets used to that, real quick. It let me pay the bills without going into debt. Let me keep my baby brother in school and Mom’s hospice care paid for. How do you turn down what seems like free money, when you’re desperate? You don’t. I didn’t.

And then, after a year, there was a knock on my door. A sleek black limousine sat on the curb in front of my house. A driver stood in front of me, and he spoke six words: “It’s time to pay your debt.”

Would you have gotten in?

I did.

It turns out $120,000 doesn’t come free.

“You’ll Never Believe…” with Mary Weber

By Leave a Comment

Welcome to the thirty ninth installment of “You’ll Never Believe…”

For those that don’t know what these new featurettes will be about, here is the scoop! “You’ll Never Believe…” will feature the weirdest questions or encounters that authors have been asked/had. Might be about their books or random things, like meetings in a bathroom where someone asked what brand of toilet paper they normally use. Fun stuff and inside scoops that an author would not normally share.

Today’s “You’ll Never Believe…” celebrates the release of Mary Weber’s latest book “Siren’s Fury (The Storm Siren Trilogy Book 2)”.  In this one, the author tells us about how her husband was recognized… Tee hee!!!! :D

“You’ll Never Believe . . .” with Mary Weber

I absolutely adore my job as a writer. But let’s face it – writers’ lives are not the most glamorous. We write and rewrite and edit for plot and structure and grammar.

Basically, we live in a perpetual state of high school English class. Except in our pjs. With coffee close by. And a fridge full of food to drown our insecurity in when we’ve no idea what a particular character is supposed to be edited into doing.

THIS is why when, every once in a while, someone actually recognizes us writer-types, or at least recognizes our name as “that person who wrote that book,” we go all shy and dorky and flash a creeptastic smile. Because we are so not used to this kind of attention. On the inside we’re going, “They know I’m a genius!” while on the outside we simply look like a headlight-startled pajama-wearing weirdo.

So that was me, as a newbie to the biz, standing beside my husband (who is an uber sexy god-like quiet man) one day as an 8-year-old approached us, wide-eyed and awestruck. “Are you . . . are you . . .?” she stuttered.

“Yes, I am,” I tried to answer the lovely girl. Except the proud, creepastic smile on my face wouldn’t let the words through. So I tripped and waited. Until finally . . .

“Are you HIM?” she asked.

Wait. What? I peered closer at this small person.

Author Mary Weber’s husband (aka Wolverine). 😛

Only to discover she was staring at my husband.

“From the movie?” the girl continued.

To which sexy god-like quiet husband looked over at me and smirked.

SMIRKED!

And THAT is the way it goes these days. Due to the fact that I am a shy, dorky writer and my sexy husband looks exactly like X-Men’s “Wolverine.”

LOL!!! I love it! 😀

About the Author:

Author Mary Weber

Mary Weber is a ridiculously uncoordinated girl plotting to take over make-believe worlds through books, handstands, and imaginary throwing knives. In her spare time, she feeds unicorns, sings 80’s hairband songs to her three muggle children, and ogles her husband who looks strikingly like Wolverine. They live in California, which is perfect for stalking L.A. bands, Joss Whedon, and the ocean. Her debut YA fantasy novel, STORM SIREN, is available now in bookstores and online, and SIREN’S FURY (book 2 in the trilogy) will be out June, 2015 from TN HarperCollins.

She says: “Scrolling down Maryse’s pre-orders list & I’ve gotta say, Jamie McGuire’s June 28th pre-order has me intrigued. A girl who’s mother is a direct descendant of Christ & father is a half human son of a fallen angel…….and a boy that is the half human son of Lucifer. Now THAT is a taboo love story….makes the thousands of stepbrother books seem tame in comparison.“
