Top 5 Fun Facts about Kill Code

  1. The ending of the book came to me first so I had to work backwards creating a story line and characters that would support it before I could start at the beginning.
  2. It was originally planned as a menage with both Jack and Logan as Jessa’s love interests but as I began to write it, they didn’t fit and a new idea for Logan set in.
  3. The book was not going to be a trilogy in the beginning but as the story unfolded I realized this story was part of a larger one that would unfold in three parts.
  4. It took me a month to write the darkest chapter. I cried. It depressed me and even then, I had to skip parts of it and come back to finish it on the first round of edits.
  5. As with every book I’ve ever written, I came up with the title during the last chapter. I have a plethora of Story 1, Story 2, Story 3’s saved in my working drafts.

Inspiration for Kill Code
The idea for Kill Code first came to me when I was about 90% done writing my first novel, Controlling Interests. I think I get to the point where I am creatively ready to work on something else and it began to float in. It took a lot of concentration to set this story aside and wrap up my previous novel. I think this is the reason I enjoy writing this as a trilogy. Because I’m still focused on the same story and everything feeds into the next thing so it keeps me focused.

Celebs as Characters
This is the hardest question for me to answer because I don’t. I like to keep my mind open and I love hearing my reader’s ideas. I have a picture in my head when I write my stories but it is rare I attach a celebrity to a character.

A Sneak Peek Behind the Book
Hmmm, what to share. Originally, this book was going to be a stand alone but as I wrote it, I realized that Jessa and Jack’s part of the story was only a piece. The complete story will unravel and new characters are coming that I can’t wait for. Book one has the darkest parts of the trilogy. Book two will include some humour and more pieces to the puzzle and so far, I see book three involving characters across the previous books and will be more action-oriented.

Ready for TWO excerpts of Kill Code?

Excerpt 1
“We know you’re in there. The place is surrounded and you aren’t leaving the property. Why don’t you ladies open the front door and we’ll have a little chat. Tell you how this is going to go.” He looks back to me and nods, cocky smile on his face. Logan loves taunting his targets so no one gets any funny ideas.
The delayed response from inside suddenly makes me apprehensive about the situation as I look around the yard for any signs of the manpower behind those front doors. There doesn’t seem to be many people here.
I take the break to step behind Logan to hide myself from the person who is going to answer. It’s a tactical maneuver to give our opponent a false sense of security. Once in place I shift to examine the house in front of me.
If you weren’t in our business, the front door wouldn’t draw too much attention, but I can tell this house is locked down like Fort Knox. The glass door on the front is reinforced and there is an intercom to the side of the door. Odd set up for a quaint farmhouse in the middle of nowhere.
Just as I am about to call in a head check, I hear the lock on the front door click and the door swings back, revealing a woman in her late twenties. Crouching further, I peak over Logan’s shoulder. The medium length of his hair hides my face and gives me an advantage.
She looks way more confident than we do at this moment which sets me off even more.
“Good morning, ma’am. This your place?” Logan drops his voice to a polite tone and waits for her answer.
She takes a half step back and I see a little more of her. Her dark blonde hair is pulled back into a ponytail and her frame is small next to the burliness of my team members. A familiarity hits me and I shift further behind Logan as I try to remember if I know her from somewhere, but nothing registers.
My adult life has been a long string of jobs, one after another, most of them undercover. With the amount of people I’ve crossed paths with, remembering her is going to be next to impossible and I hope that, until we have our hands on everyone inside, she can’t place me either.
“No, I’m just staying here for a few days. It belongs to a friend.” Her answer is careful and I can see her eyes from my spot and they are locked on Logan.
She’s lying.
She’s not looking around.
She’s not one bit curious about who is here with him.
The people inside already know.
I hear Logan exhale an annoyed breath in front of me. “What’s your name, sweetie?” he asks condescendingly.
She stands tall and defiantly crosses her arms over her chest. “Well, I can tell you it isn’t sweetie.” She bites out her last word.
I can’t help but roll my eyes.
I know her defiance is amusing Logan as he leans in to taunt her further. Punctuating each word and speaking as though English isn’t her first language he narrows his eyes on her. “Then why don’t you tell me what it is, so we don’t have any more… awkward first impressions…sweet tits.” He impatiently counters and her expression drops momentarily before twisting into a defiant sneer.
“It’s Dee,” she answers through gritted teeth and I roll my eyes again.
We’re already off to a great start.

Excerpt 2
Shit.
My skin instantly prickles at the sound of my property alarm going off on my phone. Someone is within our perimeter.
How did they find us so quickly?
This was supposed to be our vacation. I worked for months to set up a solid trail that would lead anyone trying to find us far away from here on a wild goose chase so we could have a few weeks of down time. Not the two days we’re at now.
Judging by the distance of the dust kicking up from the road, I’d say we only have a couple of minutes to get out of here and Dana is upstairs. Too far away for me to yell for her without being heard.
Looking out the window, I see movement out front, just past our cars. If it was remotely possible to make it to them, our backup supplies would hold us over for a few days while we disappear again.
That’s been our life for as long as I can remember. Jumping around, covering our tracks, and working under everyone’s radar.
I just wanted to give Dana a break. Time to hang out away from our work with Zane. A chance to watch movies and eat all the junk food I stocked the place with.
I even bought us a little boat to take out on the lake behind the property.
The boat. That’s it.
Maybe we can make it to the boat. It’s through the trees out back. Maybe they aren’t aware of it.
“What’s going on?” Dana’s voice snaps me out of planning our escape as she appears from upstairs.
“Ssshh,” I hush and she instantly freezes. “No time to explain. Perimeter is breached. We only have minutes before they’re here. I’ve alerted Zane.” I move to the side window and count three men crossing the field toward the back and sides of the house. “Dammit. I’m going to try to take one out. That might open up an escape.”
“Who are they?” Dana asks as she moves away from the windows, panic appearing to set in.
“Don’t know. But there’s no reason for anyone to be here. So it’s not good. Just see what they want. Maybe it’s local law enforcement, then you can ask them to leave the property. If it isn’t, you’ll need to get out of here. If you can get away, head straight out back and run through the trees. I have a boat on the lake. It was going to be a surprise. Just get in and go. Keys are in a holder beside the wheel.” I grab a metal statue of an elephant and weigh it in my hands. This’ll do.
“But what about you?” Her eyes are wide now. She’s never come this close to being captured before and I know she’s worried.
“You know if I can make it, I’ll be there before you. If I’m not, just go. You know what to do when you get in cell range.” She nods at my words and I turn to jog across the living room towards the steps. “Just stay cool. Buy some time. I’ll be right back.”

Reader Favorites – Pia’s Best Books of 2018 List

Pia snuck in just one day after my “last call” LOL!!! But that’s okay, I’m THRILLED to have another list to post, and it’s so fun to know more about one of our book-friends all the way from Denmark!! 😀

In fact, let’s check out a few highlights from Pia’s year (via her own comments) 😉 :

Pia (from back in March 2018): In Denmark the snow is finally melting and I hope that spring and warmer temperature is around the corner.

Pia: Finally Friday and weekend around the corner :-) I have been sick most of the week – and the only good thing about it is, that I could read a lot – not much else to do.

Pia: …it is not always icy here in Denmark. This year we have one of the hottest summers for many years.

Pia: Halfway through Friday and struggling with the heat. I would like a light breeze and a cold Pepsi Max…

And now, Pia’s Best Books of 2018 List:

A few weeks into 2019 I have finally made my ”Best of 2018” list.
In no particular order they are:

The Goal (Off-Campus Book 4) by Elle Kennedy <— I had been hesitant to read this for a long time. I loved the first three books in the series, but I am not a big fan of babies and pregnancies in books. I don’t really know why as I love them in real life. But I loved this book from the start, and looking back I might think it was the best of the four books.

Pia: I just finished The Goal by Elle Kennedy yesterday. I read the other 3 in the series last year, but somehow couldn’t start The Goal. I knew it was about Sabrina and her getting pregnant, and I know it sounds weird, but usually I don’t like books, where the heroine gets pregnant or have small children. I don’t get it, because I have 3 children myself and love them more than anything. But not so much in books.

But anyway The Goal really took me by surprise. It might be the best in the series. It was so much fun and easily a 5 star read for me. I would really love to see a series of the next Briar team – Fitzy, Hunter and Hollis and maybe even Brody :-)

Furious Rush by S.C. Stephens <— Thinking back to when I was reading this book my heart starts to beat a bit faster. All that angst nearly gave me a heartattack. I wasn’t sure if my heart would be able to survive the second book, and it nearly didn’t. All these feelings I had reading this book (and the second book Dangerous Rush) shows me that S.C. Stephens really is a master. I felt the exact same when reading Thoughtless, and it is rare for me to have these intense feelings when reading a book.

Pia: I just finished Furious Rush by S C Stephens and loved everything about that book. Just a little bit of angst, the slow burn between Hayden and Kenzie, and everything is just heading for the HEA. Until the last page and now my heart beats faster just thinking about starting book 2 Dangerous Rush. I have a very strong feeling where book 2 will take us, and I’m not sure I can handle that. I’m really nervous but sure I have to start it. I loved Thoughtless and it had a lot of angst too, so hopefully I will survive Dangerous Rush :-)

A Little Bit Like Love and A Little Bit Like Desire by Brooke Blaine <— Best m/m read of the year.  I’m really looking forward to the third book from South Heaven.

Path of Destruction by Cara Dee <— Cara Dee is a new-to-me author in 2018. I have read several of her books – some I love and some not so much. But Path of Destruction was so full of angst and from the first page I couldn’t put it down. Being about a famous rock star – the good and the bad. This is about sex, drugs and rock’n roll but also about forgivness and second chance love.

The Opposite of You (The Opposites Attract Series Book 1) by Rachel Higginson <— This one had been on my tbr for a long time. So many of you had it on your Best of list last year (or was it the year before?)  I still feel like I know that food truck from the inside and out.

Getaway Girl and Runaway Girl by Tessa Bailey <— Another new-to-me author. I have read another 3 books by her this year, and they could easily be on this list as well. I had a bit of a dislike towards Naomi in the first book, but reading The Runaway Girl made me understand all her actions. They were brilliant.

Cry Baby by Ginger Scott <— I wasn’t hooked from the start, because basketball is a major part of this book. I’m not opposed to sports books, but they were playing basketball and teaching basketball all the time. But I’m not one to give up a book once I have started it, and I’m so glad that I didn’t stop.  Basketball is a huge part of this book, but it is really about a gang member and the new girl on his street, who connect through basketball. I felt his struggle to find – and be – himself.

Pia: I finished Cry Baby by Ginger Scott a couple of days ago. I went in blind and it was one of the best reads in a long time. The story is about a gang member and the new girl in the neighborhood. Not your typical HEA but the perfect ending in my opinion. I can’t seem to let this one go. I have startet a new book but I still keep thinking about Cry Baby and wishing I could stay in their world a little longer. I highly recommend this one

Excess and Predator & Prey: The Phoenix and The Fire by Kate Stewart <— I love Kate Stewart and have read almost all her books. Heartbreak Warfare is on my tbr for 2019.  Excess and Predator & Prey have interconnecting characters and I would recommend reading Excess first. All three books are pretty dark and HOT – the kind of hot and steamy that leaves you breathless. This is really my kind of book.

Blind Kiss: A Novel by Renee Carlino <— I rarely cry when reading af book, but somehow I always end there when reading a book by Renee Carlino. This one was so sweet and heartbreaking at the same time.

The Studying Hours: How to Date a Douchebag 1+2 by Sara Ney <— I don’t know why I haven’t read these years ago. They were so much fun.

2.) I made a delicious crock pot italian sausage meatballs and Publix brand jarred marinara (which has become my absolute favorite brand of remade sauces). I added mushrooms, garlic, and onions, so it’s hearty!!
3.) Today I will make Swedish meatballs!!! 😀

 <— You GUYS!! It’s FRIDAY!! We have some new releases and some bargain-priced books that I loved, and of course, reader recommendations with one taking our readers by storm! When Ashes Fall <— OH. EM. GEE!! You can’t miss it below. You’ll see the reactions and I just HAVE to read it too (but I’m scared!!). LOL! P.S. I’ll be adding more throughout the day as we find them 😀
Okay first:

TAKE A LOOK AT WHAT WE FOUND FOR THE WEEKEND :D !!

  • The Hail Mary (The Waiting Series Book 3) by Ginger Scott <— GINGER SCOTT ALERT!! MUST BE READ IN ORDER!!! FOOTBALL STAR!! P.S. Here’s the reading order (and a few in our book crew LOVE it!! “…He became a man under Friday night game lights and in college stadium tunnels, and without the grit and the glory that’s earned ten yards at a time, he’s afraid of what kind of man he’ll be. But there’s more than a game at stake now. Reed’s wife, Nolan, is afraid too. She’s seen what can happen when the love of her life pushes himself too hard, and she can’t escape the nightmares she relives after almost losing her entire world to one single play on the field…”

Amy: I loved Waiting on the Sidelines and the sequel!! Yes, it was teenage angst but it was ANGST! And we love angst in just about any form, don’t we? ;)
Cheryl: …ended up reading another Ginger Scott series, Waiting on the Sidelines. I usually don’t like high school H/h story’s but this was an exception. Book 2 they were college age and had a fair amount of angst.

Katie: I loved this one!

  • Everything, Everything by Nicola Yoon <— WE LOVED THIS BOOK!! And it’s super-bargain priced right now! Also, it’s a movie now. 🙂 P.S. Here’s my 4.5 STAR review.
  • When Ashes Fall by Marni Mann <— RECENT RELEASE & THE BIGGEST HIT OF THE WEEK!!! OMG LOOK AT THESE REACTIONS!!

Lisa: I have so much love for When Ashes Fall right now. That book owned me. I opened it intending to just get started, since I was at work, and the next thing I know it’s 7 hours later and I’m making enough unladylike crying noises at my desk that my co-worker had to come check on me!!! It’s a gut-wrenching, yet beautiful story. It will break your heart, but also mend it. It is not safe for those averse to Marmies…but it is also NOT about cheating. I had such a visceral reaction to the storyline when it all came together for me.
Michele G: I have to second everything Lisa just said about When Ashes Fall. We buddy read it…well Lisa inhaled it…then I inhaled it…now we are waiting for Jenn…then Renee…and so on… On a serious note, GO IN BLIND! Do avoid it if you don’t like heartbreakers….because I could have buzzed through a case of tissues (no lie). Don’t avoid it for any other reason…there’s really no cheating or anything else that folks might be worried about. It’s a beautiful and unique story. It is written in multiple POV’s (and time periods) which I know Renee is not digging and I confess that I had to get used to it myself at first too …but it really does lend itself to the story. Get in there ladies and read it!!
Jenn: You will all have to forgive me as I am totally in a book that just GUTTED me so what is the book…I was sucked in right from the beginning with the first (4) lines of the book.
Marni Mann is a new to ME author but I am seriously in love with this book even though I am hiccuping/sobbing and feel like I am going to throw up…I love having these reactions goes to tell you how invested I am. This book is owning me!

  • Allegedly by Tiffany D. Jackson <— PSYCH-THRLLER SUPER-BARGAIN ALERT!! This one made my Best of 2018 list and I just found out that it’s on super-sale right now!! It’s a psych-thriller and took me for quite a ride. And of course, and AMAZING ending!! P.S. Here’s my review.
