Nyx in the House of Night: Mythology, Folklore and Religion in the PC and Kristin Cast Vampyre Series
Edited by P.C. Cast? Yup. This isn’t another actual book in the series, but a companion of sorts. This one was sent to me by the publisher, (actually, TWO, one for me, and one for a lucky commenter), and I quickly realized it is a compilation of “works” (essays) by other authors, and professors. Analyzations and comparisons of past related folklore and mythology. Greek, vampyre, witches, the history of some Oklahoma landmarks that inspired the places in the story, Cherokee customs and beliefs, even… the history of cats (poor things, worshipped as gods and then despised as demons, and then… well we cuddle ’em now 😉 )

Book Review – Awakened by P.C. Cast and Kristin Cast
Awakened (House of Night)
Well, this concludes my House of Night marathon, and it’s been quite the journey. From early “meh” moments, to absolute elation. From heart pounding situations that had me staying up all night indulging, to crestfallen disappointment. I developed an almost unhealthy preoccupation with Erik’s tenuous situation and became bitter towards the author’s mid-series change of heart. And then, a bit of an upturn when the author distracted me with a new and intriguing focus. One thing I can say for sure. This series made me feel and overall, that’s a good thing. Unfortunately, the last few made me feel more drained and aggravated than hungry for more.

Burned (House of Night, Book 7)
Zoey’s soul has shattered ’cause Kalona broke her heart, (but not in the way I expected). She is now in Nyx’s realm, as a damaged and fading spirit. Zoey’s body is slowly dying on earth, while her essence in the “Otherworld” is being a total basket case. The pieces that make up, well… “her“, are scattered everywhere and she can’t get a hold of herself long enough to gather them back.
“If you don’t put yourself back together, you won’t ever leave here because your gonna die, Zoe. I can feel that.”

Tempted (House of Night, Book 6)
Kalona (and Neferet) are gone but not necessarily for good. With the power of the “super-best-friends” circle, Zoey and the “nerd-herd” were able to banish them (and Kalona’s evil Raven Mockers) into oblivion. Or in this case, Italy.
“I knew deep in my heart, in my soul, that what had happened tonight had not been an ending or even a victory. It had been a terrible, horrible beginning.”
As the kids regroup, and plan to get their school back in order, Stevie Rae privately has a bout of good deed-ism and saves a dying being. Except that it’s a creature the group intended on being dead. Forever dead. Yup, she found one of Kalona’s badly injured but not-yet-dead Raven Mockers (a half human/half bird creature of death), and instead of putting it out of it’s misery, Stevie Rae hides it and begins nursing it back to health. To make matters worse, it was Kalona’s best (and most evil) son, Rephaim.

Hunted (House of Night, Book 5)
SPOILER WARNING! I don’t give it all away, but if you’re new to the series, there are some issues discussed here, that you shouldn’t know about yet.
I was mowing through these books as if they were candy! I LOVE candy! But the series went from chocolate covered cherries to Sour Heads. Mind you…I kinda like Sour Heads too, I just don’t devour them as fast, and “squinch” my face every time they get to be too much. And this book, yes, at times, was just too much.
