Undecided I absolutely LOVED this fun book! It’s freaking fantastic and for all of the reasons that we once fell head-over-heels in love with “New Adult” books. It’s got the “new adult” college insecurities, but with the engaging, smart and witty, yet VERY human characters. The mistakes made in search of having a good time, the consequences dictating their current outlook, their pasts that they are trying to overcome (but in this case… nothing TOO dark – just… “stuff” ya know? Stuff that we have ALL contended with). But best of all, it’s the awesome connection between all of the characters (old friends and new…). Lots of merging going on, but in a very organic, realistic way.
It’s a recent release that was recommended by a few of our fellow readers here, and OMG were they ever right!
The new cover!
bev: …I do want to read Undecided by Julianna Keyes. Lots of positive reviews. NA.
MichelleS: Bev – do you mean Undecided, by Keyes? I read the first amazon review and that reviewer said it was her favorite NA book ever – better than Beautiful Disaster and The Deal…. them’s some powerful words right there, I tell ya’…… I may just take you up on that offer. Okay. When are we going in? Who else is with us?
bev: Finished. I really liked it, loved Crosbie.
Grace: Freaking loving Undecided! It’s got such delicious buildup! Which seems to only continue building. 54% in and enjoying every second of it.
Nadia: Loved this one !!
This is right up our alley my friends, and the minute I started reading it, I knew… this is on par with our favorites. To me? If you love Elle Kennedy’s “The Deal” and subsequent books in that series, you will love this one, too. It has that “feel” and that calibre of writing.
Maryse: Okay I just one-clicked Undecided. You guys have absolutely decided for me.
Amy: I’m going to squirrel to either Evil or Undecided. I’m undecided right now. *snort* Yeah, yeah, I know. That was bad.
Maryse: Undecided Amy!!!!! Let’s be Undecided together!!!
bev: Undecided was a really good, I read it in like a day.
Amy: …Maryse, we’ll be Undecided together! I’m starting it tonight. Michelle…you know, you could always join us. And MichelleS is reading it as well right now. Come on, ya know ya wanna! We have yummy martinis in our Undecided tent. *peeks around for Maryse* Unless she flew the coop again… *snort*
MichelleS: I’m still reading Undecided & loving it. It is s really good NA book, I think that was the comparison, Bev, just the genre, not so much the plot. And sex scenes don’t do it for me so much anymore, but I didn’t skim this one… And I LOVE a slow build.
Cheryl: Finished Undecided- which I LOVED …. it had all the “feels” from the start, although I wanted MORE at the end
Maryse: I’m reading Undecided right now and I’m already loving it. Great writing style, and I hope we stay in Nora’s head the whole way through. OH PLEASE OH PLEASE let it be so!!!!
Cheryl: Maryse, it is all from Nora’s pov.
Maryse: *phew* Okay I can read in ease. I get to be one person the whole way through and stress and feel like she does. MY FAVORITE!!!
Fabi: Help. I don’t usually have this much trouble picking my next read. I seem to be on a nice romance roll so I should probably stay on that track for now.
Maryse: Fabi! Undecided – just the title alone should decide for you. And if you ask me, I’d say it has an “Elle Kennedy” feel to it (you know like… “The Deal”). The witty, easy-flow writing, and the inner dialogue. You’ll love her! VERY GOOD so far… let’s buddy read. Come on!!! Please??!
Amy: I am really, really, REALLY enjoying it. The banter, the h’s narration “voice” and her thoughts, Crosbie and Kellan’s interactions…it’s all FUN!! Even though I was a bit jarred by the name Kellan…there’s only one “Kellan” in my mind. But the big “secret” from that could cause a big problem…*squeals and bites fist* Just say something already and get it over with!! (if it is what I think it is) Then again, if she DID say it then the story would be over that much quicker. Boo. OR it’s a totally different secret and YAY DRAMA!!!!
Fabi: I LOVE you ladies. Maryse! I’m only a few pages in but I swear I haven’t loved a book like this since The Deal. “…telling people I live with Kellan McVey is like telling them I live in a candy store or a bank vault…” I love her! Her internal dialogue is perfect. And his “foot in mouth” problem is hilarious . and…“…it’s a cardigan, not a chastity belt…” rotfl
Maryse: YAY!!!! I KNEW it, the minute I started… this was one of “those”. Thank you to everyone that pointed it out to me (us). This was exactly what I was in the mood for.
Fabi: Yes, it has that BD, The Deal, etc. feel. Loving the snot out of it.
Amy: Fabi, right?? Her inner commentary is hilarious. This one for whatever reason made me snort out loud last night…“Paired with her bleached hair and signature red lipstick, she looks like a cross between a fifties movie star and a naughty schoolgirl who hates me.” The last three words of that line were so unexpected and it just hit me as funny.
Amy: Okay, it’s official…I’m absolutely loving Undecided. LOVING it. The feels…holy moly the feels. …This book, I swear…SO fun.
Amy: Oh sh!t…oh sh!t…oh SH!T!!!!! I just hopped off the couch and my iPad fell on the ground. Not kidding. True story and all that crap. I knew it was coming and I figured I wouldn’t react because I just KNEW it would happen, but…but…but…I’m attached to them now and just NOOOOOOOOO! I don’t want it to happen!! *falls on tummy and screams into pillow* Alright, I’m okay. I’m okay. Deep breath. Here goes. *picks up iPad and goes back to Undecided*
Michelle: You guys are always right really enjoying Undecided. Didn’t get too far since kept getting distracted yesterday but hope to finish today.
Rebecca: Read it today and LOVED it!!!
Amy: *sighs and cradles iPad to chest* THAT was perfect. So, so perfect. Honestly? No complaints from me about this one. Like, at all. And as far as the ending/epilogue goes, I personally don’t need a long, drawn-out ending or epilogue. Truth be told, I actually end up skimming those lovey-dovey, ewey-gooey epilogues, so this one? Yeah, it was perfect for me. It’s been a long time since I’ve had a book put me in a book-love fog like this. Gah, I’ve missed it.
Maryse: Right there with you Amy. This is what I’m looking for, when I’m not looking to “tear my heart out”. 😉 THIS.
So what’s it about?
Nora is in her second year of college, and while she was Miss “Studious-Don’t-Notice-Me-Please” in high school (and received a scholarship for her amazing focus), she lost her way in college. Meeting a sort of “bad-girl” best friend, the two partied hard (promiscuous behavior and all!), and got in some trouble (leading to an arrest!! Tee hee <— that story ends up being kind of cute!). But on the spot? Nora finds herself on a failing slope (losing half of her scholarship).
Year two of college equals buckling up. No more parties, dropping her best-friend (and roommate) Marcela from her roster, therefore having to find a new studious roommate, to tame down and study-study-study!
And she does. A new roommate she chats with for some time (all he wants is to be far from the college-party ways) because he too, is looking to buckle down (and demands NO distractions in the residence). No parties, no “hook-ups”, no temptations. A tranquil, studious environment is what they’re both looking for.
But when she finally meets him (not realizing exactly “who” she was talking to), not only does she realize he’s the most popular guy (and player) in college, but she’s hooked up with her potential “new roommate” herself!!! *gasp*
I recognize the voice of Kellan McVey, Crosbie’s best friend, campus stud, and my one-time drunken closet hookup. Oh f*ckity f*ck.
Yikes! And he doesn’t even recognizer her. DOUBLE YIKES!!
…his expression remains wholly pleasant, not a trace of recognition dawning on his handsome features. He has no idea who I am. Sure, I was wearing a shiny red corset and a leather mini-skirt during our… interlude at the Alpha Sigma Phi frat party last spring, but I’m wearing a cardigan now, not a mask.
He just doesn’t remember me.
However, the “roommate arrangements” are too good to refuse, (even though his best friend, Crosbie, is also a known college superstar-player, and always around) but she figures as long as she keeps her head down, and her nose in the books, the rest doesn’t matter.
I should leave. He lied to me, he has a stupid friend, and he doesn’t remember that we had sex. If I’d been having any doubts about the wisdom of that hookup, they were cemented forty-five minutes later when I spotted him getting a very public bl** job from a very willing blonde.
The mortification of that moment should be enough to send me running. And I swear I would, if only I hadn’t met with four other potential roommates yesterday and failed to click with any of them. And if only I didn’t need to move out of my cramped room in summer residence by the end of the week.
And he’s pretty thrilled that she’d be perfect as his roommate, ’cause… you know. She’s all “nerdy” and stuff:
He laughs a little then, and I realize it’s the idea of me partying that he finds amusing.
Ha ha, Kellan, it’s a freaking cardigan, not a chastity belt.
“Sorry,” he says, reading the irritation on my face. “I, uh… I just thought it would make things easier for me and my roommate if there was no… temptation. Like, you know. To complicate things.”
I try not to let my jaw drop. Did he just call me ugly? Or at the very least, un-tempting?
But you know… close proximity and all that. People become friends. And stuff. 😛
OH EM GEE YOU GUYS!!! It’s SO much fun!! PLEASE PLEASE if you like these kinds of stories, THIS IS FOR YOU!
The writing, the whole “college-figuring-myself-out” sweet story telling, the super-steaminess, the slow build-up. Absolute perfection (to me). This is not insta-love, and the author does a GREAT job delightfully confusing us on the potential love-interest angle. It’s the whole “new adult” shebang, and I mean WHOLE ’cause the awesome story-flow, the writing, the funny moments,
His eyes are wide with shock and then they crinkle at the corners as he starts to laugh. I worm my way out of his grasp and flop onto the floor and start to laugh too.
Sh!t,” he gasps. “Nora, I’m so sorry.”
“This is what happens when people have fun!” I say, sticking a stern finger in the air. “Never again.”
the OH NO moments, the angsty stuff. It’s all there, and best of all? The realistic dialogue (amongst the characters – HILARIOUS!!! SO REAL as if I’m watching an awesome sitcom about friends, and soon-to-be friends), and especially the internal dialogue.
A soft tap on my bedroom door has my head whipping around like the girl in The Exorcist, and even though I planned to ignore him, I still call out, “What?”
“I ordered pizza.” His voice is muffled by the door, but he doesn’t turn the knob.
My stomach jumps joyfully at the news. Food! Sustenance! And then it sinks, because Crosbie and Kellan order in their fair share of pizza, and they load it up with ground beef, anchovies and olives, all of which I find revolting.
“I don’t want your disgusting pizza,” I mutter. “Thanks anyway.”
“It’s only half disgusting,” he replies. “The other half is boring.”
My stomach perks up again. We’ve had this discussion before: I like pepperoni and extra cheese, which Crosbie and Kellan unanimously declared the dullest pizza on earth.
I get up and pull open the door, making Crosbie jump back like he’s been zapped. I look around suspiciously. “Is there really pizza?”
“Yeah.” He points at the coffee table where a closed box awaits.
“Are you lying about the boring half?”
“I wish.”
Awwwwwww!!! I love friends. LOL!!!! So sweeeeeeet and funny and endearing, and goofy. GAH I LOVED THIS BOOK!
We GET to be her the entire way through, so you get to worry, and pine along with her, without having a clue what anyone else is thinking. Fun private realizations, panic attacks, secrets, and drama-causing assumptions abound, and I empathized and thrilled, throughout.
…the quiet words bring me to a halt. There’s no vehemence there, no anger, only sadness. Exhaustion. As though being angry has left him wrung out and raw. I know the feeling.
*sniff sniff*
It’s SO GOOD you guys. I promise! Nothing too crazy, nothing too angsty, nothing really… eye-rolling, but everything in just enough quantities to make it SO good! Everything… and everybody.
5 stars of pure “new adult” satisfaction in every way!
Just a few book finds that are seem worth mentioning. And I know that one to the left is not romance, but it hit so MANY of our reading crew in a BIG way. For a lot of us, it was our first book!
Kathryn: I STILL can’t read this book without crying.
Lauren: My mom gives The Giving Tree & Are You My Mother to each grandchild the day they are born. She writes a sweet, somewhat meaningful message on the inside, along with the date & child’s full name.
Megan: The first book i remember reading is “the giving tree” i still love that book and now so do all my nieces and nephews
Pengwen: The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein. I loved it as a kid. Such a beautiful story about life and the transition between childhood to adulthood.
Madisyn: That book slays me!!! I can hardly read it without tearing up. That and “love you forever” – ay-yai-yai!!! LOL
The Giving Tree by Shel Silverstein <— BELOVED BOOK & super-bargain priced!!!
Into the Darkest Corner by Elizabeth Haynes <— PSYCH-THRILLER ALERT! OMG I LOVE when this happens. This book is on super-sale right now, and it sounds right up my scary-ex stalker psych-thriller alley, so I TOTALLY one clicked it… and then it said that I already purchased it back in 2014!!!!! Tee hee! YAY ME! Guess what I’ll be reading soon?! SO MANY awesome reviews!
Killian: A West Bend Saints Romance by Sabrina Paige <— UNTAMED, GRUFF & SOLITARY ALERT! He’s completely the wrong guy for her… (and it’s super-bargain priced today) “Killian Saint is wild and untamed, gruff and solitary, an arrogant loner from a family that people in West Bend say is no good. I should know better. A man like Killian should have no part of my life, not with a kid to raise and a bakery to run.”
Yes Please <— also not romance but I do love autobiographies, and this lady makes me laugh! SUPER-SALE!!
Angel of Redemption by J.A. Little <— McJERKFACE ALERT! & It’s SUPER-BARGAIN priced. A social worker that is helping foster 2 boys… “When a case unexpectedly brings Kayla to his door in the middle of the night, sparks fly. With a piercing gaze and heavily inked skin, Dean looks like a walking wet dream. Until he turns out to be an a$$hole.”
Confessions of a Bad Boy by J.D. Hawkins <— HE BAILS HIS BEST FRIEND’S LITTLE SISTER OUT OF JAIL ALERT! also super-bargain priced today! “…when I need a fake girlfriend to help me out of a jam at work, she’s the only one who can help. Now I’m stuck sharing a hotel room with her for the weekend…”
This is a different kind of “recommendations” list. Or… maybe a TBR list? Of books we are dying to read, but too scared to (for whatever reason, taboo, too scary, too sad… you get the picture).
I posted this on Facebook late last night and already have a ton of awesome book suggestions that have some of us too antsy to jump in, and yet those of us that HAVE read ’em are here to help! LOL!
I’ll start! Mine would be “Tampa” (it sounds too crazy and taboo and disturbing and so many er… “loved’ it, or enjoyed being psyched-out by it, but I’m scared). Also “The Empty Jar” ’cause I hear it’s ugly-crying from start to finish. My poor heart.
Jacqueline: Me Before You: A Novel, I just don’t think my heart can take the sadness. It stares at me from my kindle home screen, lol!
Also, I was scared to start Mud Vein but I recently finished it. That was lovely, and terrible, and moving
Maryse’s Book Blog: Both books that I absolutely LOVED!!!! 😀 (my review of Me Before You and my review of Mud Vein)
Niki: You MUST read Me Before You! I held off on it for awhile because I don’t do sad books or sad movies, but this one is totally, totally, undeniably worth the ugly-crying!!!
Lauren: I agree, I’m afraid to read Me Before You even though it’s been on my TBR list for a while…
Jill: It was worth evry single tear
Suanne: Me Before You. It’s so hyped up right now, I’ll hold off. I’m always a decade behind the times anyway. I didn’t read Harry Potter until this year and I just started Game of Thrones.
Tracey: After You: A Novel the sequel to Me before You I haven’t the guts to read it …I’d like to but nope my finger hovers over the purchase button but the pure terrified chicken in me hauls back the finger …maybe on next week /year
Kelley: It is good! Don’t be scared. All the characters end up getting nice closure.
Kim: LOL!!! I’m only 30% in The Empty Jar and I’ve been crying since the get go
Jo: The empty jar- 12% and gut wrenching already. But I shall be brave
Maryse’s Book Blog: EXACTLY!!!! But I hear it is SOOOOO GOOOOOOD!
Kim: It really is beautiful!!
Lauren: It got a 4.69 on Goodreads. I’ve just purchased it and added it to my TBR list! This is why I love Maryse’s Book Blog – I learn about great books that I would never have known about.
Krystal: I’m soo worried ! Lol but excited. I know I have prepare my self !!
Meagan: Forbidden! I’ve owned it awhile now, but haven’t read it yet! I don’t even know why, possibly cause I know it will break my heart
Maryse’s Book Blog: I also loved this one but, I too, was scared to read it. (my review)
Lauren: Forbidden was one of those books that I couldn’t put down, it wrapped you up, chewed you up and spit you out. It’s worth the read but I hated the ending. Don’t be afraid of it because it’s a taboo subject because it really is beautiful and readers always root for love to win.
Kat: Arsen. A broken love story & The Ground Rules reading about cheating twist all my vital organs. And so many books that are ‘hyped’ up and loved loved. Like Making Faces I desperately want to read it but am worried I’ll be disappointed. Like Me Before You, yes it was enjoyable, no I didn’t cry, but I knew where is was going from the first chapter. To me it just wasn’t as amazing as everyone is saying.
Lauren: Arsen was amazing, absolutely you should read it. Ground rules was good, not great and ends kind of with a cliff hanger but it didn’t make me want to read the second book right away. Still sitting in my TBR list. I’ll get around to it. But definitely read Arsen. You won’t regret it.
Kat: Thanks Lauren! When I get to it I’ll let you know what I think. I’m even taking a screen shot so I don’t forget
Tanya: You have to read Making Faces! Beautiful story! 5 star read for me. Loved it!!
Rebecca: I don’t remember the name but it is a new one you posted this week and said you wouldn’t be able to read it. So, when I read the synopsis my heart cracked and I got choked up and thought ummmmm NOPE! That sounds like my worst nightmare! (Husband dies and then dog does too- NO. THANK. YOU) I would have to be medicated to read it.
Maryse: Ahhhhh yes that was Odin’s Swan Song by Jaime Loughran. GAH!! No i won’t be able to. I just can’t.
Angie: Yours Always by Rhonda R. Dennis. I just know this book is going to break my heart!
Cassie: Tampa was very out of my comfort zone, but it’s good.
Shantell: Which author?
Cassie: Alissa Nutting. The book cover was super graphic, they had to make it all black.
Lauren: I read Tampa and it was terrible. The taboo part of the story wasn’t what made it bad it was the writing and the protagonist is annoying. The best thing about the book is the cover art – well played. But I say don’t waste your time.
Sadie: So many of these books listed are favorites of mine – me before you, fault in our stars, forbidden, mud vein, how to kill a rock star, bronze horseman… Not sure what that says about me. I also liked Tampa!
Maryse: LOL Sadie!! I was just thinking, I have a review for almost all of these and I LOVED them all. 😉 You ‘n me… birds of a feather. ‘Cept I’m a-scared of Tampa!
Sharon: Waiting for Wyatt because I’m worried the animal abuse will get too graphic.
Lisa: I think you would be ok. If memory serves, no actual abuse was talked about in detail. It was more the aftermath…like what the dogs have become after trauma. Like one dog hides in the back of his kennel. It’s been awhile but I don’t remember anything graphic that upset me.
Sharon: Thank you.
Katarzyna: The Life of Anna series by Marissa Honeycutt! This is what I’m curious about but definitely too scared to read. I found out about that series on your blog( of course!), I’ve got it on my Kindle but still, I’m too afraid to go there…
Maryse: OMG YES!!!! That one is on my scaredy-cat list, too. The reviews seem amazing, but the things I’ve been hearing, and the shocking scenes, and some of my fellow reader’s reactions… well. All of it. I don’t think I can.
Jan: Me too I’m not 100 percent sure what it’s about and everyone is saying its a tear jerker so I’m scared someone is going to die, and I can’t read them!!!
Stacy: I know, I can’t do sad endings, they stay with me too long!!!
Lisa: The Bronze Horseman. I know it will be epic and powerful but I hesitate for some reason. I bought it on sale and it’s been sitting on my Kindle waiting.
Jeannie: Thoughtless, How to Kill a Rock Star (I started it and couldn’t finish it, I was too scared lol) and Forbidden. I just can’t bring myself to read any of them.
Amber: I wish I had never read Unseen Messages. I wish someone had warned me. I was depressed for days 🙁 I’ve never seen the movie titanic-I know how it ends
Barbara: I finished reading the The Black Lotus Series I don’t think I can read more of this subject, and some point it was too graphic, too much I had to Take some breaks the whole series is !!!! The writing Was good !!!
Carina: Unlit Star Trust me. Cried for days after. Such a beautiful book.
Undecided by Julianna Keyes <— WHAT I’M CURRENTLY READING ALERT!! Okay, so… I was undecided on what to read next, until a few of my book-buddies proclaimed BIG love for this one (you’ll see the quotes below and in the comments). 😀 And coincidentally enough, it’s called “Undecided”. And you guys… it is SO good. I’m still only in the 1st quarter but I’m loving it. Who wants to buddy-read with me? And if you ask me, I’d say it has an “Elle Kennedy” feel to it (you know like… “The Deal”). The witty, easy-flow writing, and the inner dialogue. You’ll love her! Let’s buddy read. Come on!!! Please??!
Misery by Stephen King <— STEPHEN KING PSYCHO-FAN ALERT! Look what’s on super-bargain sale!!! ‘Member that one? About the author’s rabid-fan that wanted him to write a book in a series the way SHE wanted it.
Sass by Laramie Briscoe <— UNREQUITED LOVE/FAKE RELATIONSHIP SUPER-BARGAIN! She’s been in love with him forever, and he’s pining over his ex and… “I told him that a pretend relationship between us would work. It would help him move on. I didn’t count on my heart or his getting in the way. And I sure as hell didn’t count on not being able to tell when pretend turned to reality. When it all implodes, the only thing left is the truth.“
<— AND Well LOOKIE HERE it’s Evil!!!!! HAPPY FRIDAY THE 13th to us! A new TIJAN surprise just for us (already #17 on ALL of Amazon Kindle), and it sounds right up our alley. BULLY ALERT??!!! Sure sounds like it! They are the untouchable in-crowd… even HIGHER than the in-crowd but…
“Kellan was in his own league. He was our leader and he was the one no one messed with. No one dared. He was ruthless, powerful, and no one could match him… Except for me. I was about to find out just how different I was from my family.”
And we’ve got some fellow readers jumping right in!!
bev: Who gets a little freaked when it is a Friday the 13th?
Grace: It is Friday the 13th – thanks for pointing that out! I’m too big a baby to read the death book no matter how much Ela or any death clubbers loved the sobbing…. So I’m reading Evil by Tijan instead. Released today. Perfect!
Amy: Oooooh, guys! I just was told that Evil by Tijan is paranormal…I might just squirrel!!!!
Maryse: Friday the 13th excites me! It’s an excuse to watch or read horror!!! YAY!!
bev: Maryse, what are you reading?
Maryse: I dunno yet. Well I’m back in taste-test mode as I have a few that I want to sample. I’ve kind of started a er… forbidden, possibly shocking darkish satire-black er… I dunno? Comedy read? Dark psych-thriller, love story spiral descent? No. I dunno. I’ve heard it’s fairly forbidden and it’s written by a man, and it’s got all sorts of weird feedback but I’m taste-testing it, ’cause you know I’m attracted to the psych-mind-benders. It’s called: Undone: A Novel by John Colapinto
And there’s more…

Undecided by Julianna Keyes <— GRACE IS FREAKING LOVING IT!

Maryse: Okay I just one-clicked Undecided. You guys have absolutely decided for me.
A Kind of Truth by Lane Hayes <— M/M ROCK STAR ROMANCE THAT FABI LOVED!!!
“For lovers of mm romance and music or rock star themes, this one is top notch. The book and the audio version are both excellent. I was not able to pull myself away from this for even a few minutes. I had to read it from front to back without pause.…I’ve been reading all day.”

This is why Slade ‘Slaughter’ Clark doesn’t have a chance in hell. I’ve avoided falling for the arrogant jock up until now, and there’s no way I’ll let him in. My business professor may have thought he was doing us both a favor when he forced Slade and me to partner up for a major project…“
The Bird and the Sword
You just can’t go wrong with a beautifully written tale, penned by such an eloquent author! Amy Harmon is MUCH-loved in our indie book world, and this book is yet another example of her effortless ability to capture our hearts with her words. An author renowned for her captivating prose culminating into stunning stories, delivers, yet again.
I’d recommend this book to anyone, young and old. Such a battle to overcome (in various ways). So much hurt, shame and fear, and yet SO much love and acceptance. What a beautiful message!
I definitely went out of my reading comfort zone (or should I say… my discomfort zone, considering how much I love my painful uber-angst love stories, and super-scary thrillers). But so many in our reading group LOVE fantasy books and have been tempting me dearly.
It was time.
Considering the fact that I could NOT get over the gorgeous cover, that enticing title, and the rave reviews that this book was getting (and of course, by a tried-and-true author) I was SO in! Especially after that “start”. WOW!!!!!! I was ready. So I stepped out out of my usual, and escaped into an exquisitely written, sweet, heart-warming (and yet still scary-thrilling) fable that had a bit of everything that we love to experience in our “epic” love stories. It was the ultimate fairytale.
This saga is laden in magic, defining many of our main characters, and the fear of magic causing so much strife in their lives. There’s a fight for a Kingdom (with heirs, and of course, avaricious opposition). Our main character is an emotionally mistreated “princess” of sorts, with image issues. She’s been raised believing she’s “broken”
Every living thing has a word, and I hear them all. But I can’t make them.
and trying to overcoming and hide what she considers a curse and kept as a “prisoner” by her very own father (Lord Corvyn)…
“Hide her words, Corvyn. Because if she dies . . . if she is even harmed, you will share the very same fate.”
for his own selfish reasons.
He was next in line for the throne. He wanted to be king, and I just wanted to be free of him. My mother told my father I wouldn’t speak again, and she told him if I died, he would die too. He had not doubted her, and I had spent the last fifteen years caged and cornered. My father watched me anxiously for signs of health and hated me because his fate was tied to mine.
And to my delight, of course there’s a beauteous and powerful warrior King. One that she fears and tries to run from. Yet he kidnaps her anyway, using her as a pawn against her father (who’s next in line for the throne). Prisoner at home, prisoner in a castle, but never her own.
“You are afraid,” he murmured. I nodded, not opening my eyes.
“Are you afraid of me?”
I nodded again.
Never fear (at least not for who she is, and for her own personal strength)! She’s strong and she’s feisty (and while she lacks some of our basic abilities that we take for granted) the King quickly realizes he’s got his work cut out for him (what delight!!!!). Especially when he gets a hint of that power she is so adamantly trying to hide.
I couldn’t explain how it felt to converse with another human being. To actually converse. I had been reduced to sharing nothing of my innermost thoughts for most of my life. Reduced to throwing things when I was angry. Reduced to tears when I was sad. Reduced to the simplicity of nods and bows, of having people look away from me or become frustrated when they didn’t know what I was trying to communicate.
I had been alone for so long with thousands of words I couldn’t express. Now this man, this infuriating, beautiful, man—son of a murderous king—could suddenly hear me as if I spoke. A woman instead of a caged bird. A human being instead of a silent presence in the shadows.
And the sweet story truly begins,
I wondered briefly if his power to compel wasn’t a great deal stronger than mine. I always seemed to obey him.
but not without a rousing clash of wills, and resistance coming at them from all angles.
I’m going to stop there, because there is SO much of the story you’re going to want to unravel for yourself. There is a war waging, and a people being unfairly condemned. There is greed, and selfishness, liars amongst the closest to them. There are those you think you can trust… that you should not. And those you suspect are treacherous… that become surprising allies.
A beautiful story that I just know my fellow fantasy-readers will love. It’s all encompassing and has that fulfilling feel, ya know? And while my love of rip-your-heart-out and/or mind-twisting reads continue to be my current favorite, fantasy is certainly fun to escape to every once in awhile. 😉
Hey! That’s me!! 😀
4 stars <— overall for me. Again… possibly just because I’m not a huge fantasy devourer, and so I was able to put it down (I didn’t quite get that devour-in-one-sitting urge). But OMG 5 stars for that writing!!!!!!
P.S. Thank you SO much to the author for the review copy. GAH I just love the cover, and my name is on it. Er… sorta. 😉 What I would do to have a signed print copy like that. *sigh* Tee hee! 😛
