Book Review – Unhinge by Calia Read

By 23 Comments

Unhinge: A Novel
*NOTICE!!! Skip this review if you want to read this story “blind”. My review is pure reaction, right to the very end, and while I don’t spoil anything per se, my reactions might give you a preconceived notion that you might not want to have going in…*
Okay… now the review.
Gosh darn it. I’m annoyed. Seriously.

Maryse: Okay so I’m just finishing a book and I have nooooo clue what is happening. I THINK I know… but OMG I have no clue, because right now? It’s just so crazy I can’t imagine I’m right??!!! I hope there’s a wiki that will tell me. Confirm it… oh my. OMG… am I reading this right???????
Maryse: Wait. Waaaaaaiiiiiiit. Wait. I don’t understand what I’m reading. Amy. AMY!!!! Anyone that has read Unhinged… please. I’m at the end. I don’t understand. *still reading and in sorta shock but not enough shock for all I expected*
Maryse: *hrmph* Yeah, no. I don’t get it. I’ll have to backtrack and do a search for a few names to find out how they factor into this story, so importantly in the end, ’cause I have no clue who they are and why they matter. And I pretty much read this one non-stop.
Gosh darn it! neutral
bev: It’s an Amy book?
Maryse: It’s an Amy book. ;) But her and I usually see eye-to-eye. Either she or I drank to many martinis with this one. LOL!!!!!!

So there you have it. My straight-forward, real-time reaction of this book. Right to the very end.
I read this one with gusto, devouring every single word, KNOWING that no matter “what” I thought was happening, that I would be shocked and appalled and stricken with OMGness in the end. And yeah… we were almost there. The whole thing was addicting. I was hooked until 90%. And then I was even MORE hooked ’cause I knew NOW was the BIG SHOCKER.
But nope. Yes. There was a “shocker”. One we didn’t see coming. But I wasn’t shocked ’cause there was NO way I could have seen it coming. None at all. So I’m bummed, instead.
Okay so yeah, That happened… sorta. But grrrrrrr!!!! How and “who” it happened with had no meaning to me. GOSH. DARN. IT!!!!!!!
This could have been so good. It kind of was. It was intense, and scary, and ANYTHING could have been the answer, but the answer revealed… did NOTHING for me. I even did a search in the Kindle book, after I was done, just to see if I missed some crazy clue or obvious (but not obvious) foreshadowing earlier on. I did not. From what I can understand (unless I missed something critical) the end was a brand new part of the story and didn’t have much to do with everything I had just read, other than… SURPRISE!! BET YOU DIDN’T SEE THIS COMING!!!! GOTCHA!
confused emoticon
But yeah… I didn’t see this coming ’cause it had NO place at all ANYWHERE in the story before the reveal. So… I dunno. No cleverness in that, I guess. *sigh*
I’m annoyed. I already said that, haven’t I?
So what’s it about?
I dunno. I mean I do. For the majority of the book, the heroine is in a mental hospital trying to figure out exactly WHY she’s there. She’s visited by her husband whom she loves more than anything. And other visitors that show up, that she doesn’t remember at all. This whole book is a look-back into her story… her falling in love and marrying the love of her life… and how she ended up in this hospital with no memories at all.
That’s all I’m gonna say.
There’re so many obvious moments, typical (and yet thrilling) of this kind of psych thriller, and yet… with all of its potential, it’s a cheap thrill overall ’cause the author solves the problem (or the psych-thrill) in a completely remote way.
My reaction? —> Wait. Whaaaaat? *backtracks* *finds nothing* Oh. Well. Okay then.
Anyway. I’m annoyed.
3.5 stars.
Almost 5 stars for the whole amazing story, psychological aspect and great writing. Excellent. But the ending? Nope. So there you go. *hrmph*
Maybe I just didn’t get it? Did I miss something? I did a backtrack and a search. From what I gather I missed nothing. The end was introduced just to solve the.. “issue”. But… wait. The whole ending/reveal was so out of left field that it evades me.
Annoyed.

Author & Book News Roundup – January 28th 2018

By

HAPPY ALMOST SUPERBOWL SUNDAY!!! That will be a happy day for many… a “meh” day for many more. 😉 But that’s okay. ‘Cause we have books. LOTS AND LOTS OF BOOKS!
In fact… first and foremost!!! Biggest news of the day is THREE BRAND NEW EARLYBIRD releases from three of our very own favorite authors!!! 😀 They’d normally be listed in tomorrow’s earlybird post, but these are tooooo goooooood-sounding to wait. 😉

“…When she finds herself in Sunnyville, she refuses to let her new roommate burn her too.
Still . . . a rebound has never looked so good.
That’s her first thought when she sees firefighter Grady Malone.
Sexy. Charismatic. Unapologetic. He’s a man who carries his own scars—the ones on his back, the survivor’s guilt on his soul, and the fear in his heart…”

  • Look the Part by Jewel E. Ann <— JEWEL E. ANN’S LATEST IS LIVE!!!!!!!! The single dad and the therapist…

“…She’s annoyingly happy with a constant need to touch him—adjust his tie, button his shirt, invade his space, and mess with his mind.

Still … She must go…”

  • Hostage (Criminals & Captives) by Skye Warren & Annika Martin <— SKYE WARREN & ANNIKA MARTIN’S LATEST DARK READ JUST WENT LIVE!!! OMG THAT COVER IS FANTASTIC!!! It’s set in the same world as Prisoner (but is a standalone and can be read separately). He’s a criminal murderer that spares her life but he gets in her car, and comes back for her again and again…

“…Drive,” he tells me, and I have no choice. He’s a criminal with burning green eyes, invading my life and my dreams.
The police say he’s dangerously obsessed with me, but I’m the one who can’t stop thinking about him. Maybe it’s wrong to let him touch me. Maybe it’s wrong to touch him back. Maybe these twisted dates need to stop. Except he feels like the only real thing in my world of designer labels and mansions.
So I drive us under threat, until it’s hard to remember I don’t want to be there.
Until it’s too late to turn back.”

And now… the news! 😀
Colleen Hoover was featured in USA TODAY for her upcoming release, All Your Perfects: A Novel!!!! You guys. She’s freaking out. 😉

“I think it just hit me that US WEEKLY did the cover reveal for my upcoming book.
Yeah, Ima try to act all cool over on my author page like that’s normal, but over here on my personal page, let’s just give me a moment to FREAK THE FREAK OUT!”

P.S. Normally I don’t “share” personal page info, but she posted this as public 😉 so it’s free game, right?? LOL!!!
Tarryn Fisher is a HUGE TEASE!!!!!! A. HUGE. TEASE. She just posted this (her upcoming release called “Daddiopath”????) and all I can scream is MINNNNNNNNNEEE!!!!!

Trust no man, my daddy said.
I didn’t mean to, but…
#Daddiopath#memoir#comingsoon

Mariana Zapata is a tease TOOOOO!!!!!! About her upcoming release:

“Just a couple of things.
1) I finished From Lukov with Love about a week ago, and it’s going through its final edit right now. It’s 150k words, it’s a story about frenemies, and I love it to pieces. There’s a lot of cursing (don’t act surprised), it’s *almost* a rom-com but still more of a contemporary, and the hero and heroine are two that will stay with me forever. This book won’t be for everyone (then again, I don’t think any of mine are), but it was a joy for me once I figured out what I was doing. 😀 It should be out in a little over week, I hope. I’m still sorting the audio book situation out. I’ll keep y’all posted.
AND BEFORE WE GO ANY FURTHER, HERE’S THE BLURB FOR FROM LUKOV WITH LOVE:
If someone were to ask Jasmine Santos to describe the last few years of her life with a single word, it would definitely be a four-letter one.
After seventeen years—and countless broken bones and broken promises—she knows her window to compete in figure skating is coming to a close.
But when the offer of a lifetime comes in from an arrogant idiot she’s spent the last decade dreaming about pushing in the way of a moving bus, Jasmine might have to reconsider everything.
Including Ivan Lukov.”

HUGE CONGRATULATIONS to these authors that made the NEW YORK TIMES BESTSELLER LIST!!!! Author Penelope Ward says:

“Huge huge huge congratulations to my BFF Vi Keeland for making the New York Times bestseller list at #8 this week for Sex, Not Love!!! I am so happy and proud of you. If books are like birthing children, this one gave you a long and hard labor! But you did it! Congratulations as well to Heidi McLaughlin who hit at #12 for Forever My Girl!! An amazing week for indies!

Jane Harvey-Berrick <— SWEEEEEET photo (and interview) of on their latest release,Undefeated (written together!!) and she says:

Check out this in-depth interview with me and Stuart Reardon !
Some great questions about UNDEFEATED and our writing partnership

Lauren Blakely <— COVER REVEAL and blurb of her upcoming release, Come As You Are! They meet at a masquerade… 😉

“…There’s no need for names or business cards. And that’s why I’m eager to get to know her more, since my mystery woman seems to like me for me, rather than for my huge…bank account.
Everything’s coming up aces. Until the next day when things get a little complicated. (Newsflash — a lot complicated.)”

Nora Roberts has posted a plea to her readers. She asks that readers be patient, and most of all polite in regards to requests for upcoming books, and in regards to their disappointments for books written, or planned, that do not follow their timeline expectations (for her, and all authors). A snippet:

“…I never have, never will, and simply can’t write to any segment of reader demands. I do try to consider reader expectations, but I have to write the story that calls to me. Whatever story that is won’t ring the bell for every reader. I accept that.
I’m sorry that the stories that have pulled me in the last few years have taken me in a direction that disappoints a reader. But if I didn’t follow the pull, whatever I wrote likely wouldn’t satisfy any reader, much less myself…”

K.A. Tucker posted a “behind the scenes” update to her latest release Keep Her Safe: A Novel (<— that I AM SOOOOO EXCITED TO READ!!!) saying:

“…It’s a book I honestly didn’t think I’d ever finish and there were a few times where I didn’t want to finish it. But it’s also the book I’m most proud of writing and if I never write another one again, I’ll know I wrote this one.
So dramatic.
This one is different from all my others (I think I always tell you guys that) but I write every book with the same simple goals, no matter what genre:
1) To entertain you
2) To make you feel.
So, to die-hard romance readers and anti-romance readers, and everyone in between, I feel like all of you will get something from this story, and I hope you’ll give it a chance…”

P.S. DO NOT FORGET!!! Tonight is the LAST NIGHT that you can enter to win a print copy!! ➔ K.A. Tucker’s latest book “Keep Her Safe” is LIVE & we’re having a two book giveaway!
Alessandra Torre just tweeted something VERY interesting, and I feel like I must agree with her…

Alessandra Torre: I’m sick of articles that say #ebook sales are declining and only make up 30% of sales. These numbers typically come from publishers. In THEIR market, where they charge $12.99 for an ebook, that’s true. But nationwide, it’s an unreliable stat.

Laura Thalassa just posted a cover reveal and blurb for her upcoming release in March! It. Is. GORGEOUSSSSSSS!!!!!

“Cover reveal and description for Pestilence (The Four Horsemen #1), the first book in my NA post apocalyptic series!”

Emma Scott teases us with her upcoming release, In Harmony, too! The good girl and the boy from the wrong side of the tracks are in a play together…

“…No one can play Hamlet but Isaac, and when the director pairs him with Willow in acting class, they clash again and again—neither willing to open their hearts to anyone.
But clashing leads to breaking, breaking leads to the spilling of terrible secrets, and soon Isaac and Willow find Shakespeare’s words mirroring their lives. When they are cruelly torn apart, neither know how this play will end…”

UPCOMING RELEASES just added to the main “New Releases” page:

  • Bigger Rock by Lauren Blakely – January 29th 2018 <— This whole book bundle is going LIVE in just a couple of days!!

“You’ll find friends-to-lovers, best-friend’s-little-sister, boss-assistant, and roomies-to-lovers romances.
Come meet the irreverent bachelor Spencer Holiday in BIG ROCK, the hot nerd Nick Hammer in MISTER O, his twin brother Wyatt, the sarcastic and sweet carpenter, in WELL HUNG, and the charming and brilliant doctor with the heart of gold, Chase Summers, in the #1 NewYork Times bestselling smash hit FULL PACKAGE.
Get ready for a hot & hilarious ride!”

  • The Dark Side series by Kirsty Cummings (aka C.M Owens) <— OH. EM. GEEEEEE!!!!!!! Kelly recommends these!

Kelly: I just needed to message you about 2 books I devoured in a day (who needs sleep!) There part of the dark side series by Kirsty Cunnings (this is her new pen name for this series but usually goes by C.M Owens) you recently reviewed a book she co wrote called worth it.All I can say is you need to read Four Psychos (The Dark Side Book 1) and Three Trials (The Dark Side Book 2). The books are absolutely amazing written and you fall in love with the characters with in pages. The lead character is a whitty, smart mouthed spirit with an ability to put her foot in it often and the 4 male leads are to die for.
All so different and I love every one of them. The books had me laughing, excited, annoyed and completely steamed up. I feel a lost now I’ve finished them but t her third book of her 4 part series is already wrote and will be released soon! Please give these books ago as there is no way you won’t love them!

Reader Question – Still seeking: The book about the exclusive club where wives could learn to be sexy…

By 7 Comments

Calling all book lovers!!! This was a question from a few months back that hasn’t been solved yet (at least not as far as I know as there is only one guess, and it was mine! LOL!!), and now Nicolle wants to know it too!

She asks:

Hi Maryse,

You posted a readers question on 27th July (The book about the exclusive club where wives could learn to be sexy) and after reading what you wrote I have been intrigued into finding this book for months but have had no luck.

I was just wondering if you would be able to repost the question to see if anyone could help with find the book?

Thanks,
Nicolle
X

P.S. Here’s the original post ➔ Reader Question – The book about the exclusive club where wives could learn to be sexy…

Anyone?

GBeck: Taint by S.L. Jennings maybe?

Steph: I think I read that book. The authors name was a guy name, perhaps actually a guy. :) I think I read it on Kindle Unlimited as well.

Joy: Definitely Taint: A Sexual Education Novel by S. L. Jennings. It’s a good read!

Cheryl: It sounds like a book from Emily Tiltons The Institute series

Robyn: Yep! I think it’s Taint also.

Susan M: Definitely Taint.

Kare: It might be a trilogy called The Contract (Nightlong Series Book 1), The Fix (Nightlong Series Book 2), and The Risk (Nightlong Series Book 3) by Sarah Michelle Lynch.
